  1. I like the signing. Now on to a winger for Malkin.

We have one! He LUVS playing wing too. Its an easier skate than his regular position. He just needs to skate from the red line into the o blue line and back again (unlike his normal blue line to blue line forays).

Welcome Pittsburgh to your new winger extraordinaire Mr. VLC!!!!!

  2. $4M.  Interesting signing by Erhoff.  I would have thought he'd get more money and a longer contract.
    Good signing by the Penguins.

There were two ways to slice it (as @jammer2 pointed out): 1) go for the cup, or 2) go for an even bigger money grab.

The guy just won the lottery with the total payout of Buffalo of 30m over the term of the contract.

Erhoff chose option 1. Have to give him props for that.

  3. I'm fine with this as a desperate measure safety net.
we're screwed cap wise this year even if Hextall can pull of a VLC miracle.

Signing Brodeur to be backup wasn't gonna happen.

To @jammer2 point, both Griese and Chad signed 1m a year. Same cap hit.

  4. Congrats all around, guys!!  Added a "power forward" myself (9.5 lbs 22 inches) on 6/12 to the mix.  With my twin boys playing center and wing, the forwards are complete.

God have mercy. My wife just read that and said no more sex for me!!!! (our daughter was 5.2 lbs 16"). That a pea compared to a basketball.

  5. I just don't see it as being a big deal. Honestly, a good numbers guy and attention to detail minimizes the impact so much it's a non-factor in my eyes. Is extra work created? Sure. But that's why the GM's and their advisors make the big money.

It really is not rocket science. While the corporations, er', franchises are multi-million dollar corporations, there is not a complex algorithm to this. At the end of the day, we are talking a corporation that maybe has 300 employees (i am leaving out the peripheral stuff like parking, concessions, etc). At the core, lets call it 300. Thats in totality. The is the entire operation. Focus on just the hockey players and financial part really can not be that hard.

I mean if I am a gm, I have one business law lawyer on my retainer (or full time if he wants), one actuarial type and one business / hockey analyst that can help tie the languages together (think that movie about the Oakland a's).  The sole purpose would be for when I say "player x / amount / years proposal", they give me an immediate response on the repercussions, not just for today, or tomorrow, but beyond.

  6. I completely get all of that.  Good post.  I actually believe the comment that it came across differently on TV.  Honestly, though, on TV it did really come across embarrassing.

And the commentors kept commenting on it (I was watching TSN announcers).

Here is my take, during the heat of a game / battle- have at it. That what philly is renowned for. The spectrum was one of the most intimidating barns to play in. I have zero qualms with that.

But this was draft day. The whole week was spent promoting the kids (as it should be). Then we get to the draft and its like a Flyers -Pitss / Flyers-Rangers playoff game atmosphere. Everyone is all kujo'd up. The only ones that were spared were the kids. Really, for a draft? I can see having some fun, but it just seemed WAYYYYY over the top to me. Really, act that way for a draft?

  7. Especially when they're almost all thanking the city and the organization for being such nice hosts.

I am not sure if it was a time thing or what (because they did run over), but I noticed about halfway through, the gms stopped thanking the Flyers, philly, etc. and just made their pick.

  8. yeah, i mean, flexibility is good.  the real thing is the 10% let's you wing it a little, and figure out the details later.  make the deal you can't afford, but so long as it isn't more than 10%, you've got two months to figure it out.  less overage equals more need to make it work right now, gain salary-lose salary, no layaways.  which, maybe isn't such a bad mode for the flyers to be in right now.

Thats what my thoughts were. Don't operate on pretend credit, operate within what is known.

I get the flexibility part, but also see how when used by a less than astute gm, could get you into trouble.

  9. the only issue it causes is it eats a large percentage of the offseason overage allowance, as you point out.

Which to me is a bit like smoke and mirrors. I get how it can be used, but its not THAT big of a deal.

  10. I thought once I looked up the stats for both. think it was 33 pts to 25 with both missing time due to injury.

I looked at the same thing. Also, PA was getting 16 min a night while Briere was getting 12. Take that for whats its worth.

I think its a stop gap / greener pastures type of thing. Next summer, Colorado will have 4m more in cap availability and not have to deal with whatever the problem was with PA in colorado. Also, Briere is clutch in the playoffs. Something colorado could have used in the last 2-3 games when Minny shut down colorados top line.

  11. So, if they lose Statsny--which is probable--the Avs get a down lineup center who can move to wing when needed and bring some veteran leadership.

Parenteau is a good fit for Montreal, I think, so probably no explanation needed.

Two guys who really needed a change of teams

Agree with everything. I would also add that Briere has only one year left on his contract and the money between him and PA cap wise is a wash. PA has two years left.

  12. Gleason stinks. Upshall stinks. The picks would be great, but I think Dallas may not be on his list of destinations.
Wonder how high picks would be though?

who cares- just getting the cap relief and the person moved would be great.

  13. The league year starts on July 1 every year.

If thats the case, then in reading the verbiage from capgeek that you listed, it would seem that he had to have waived his NTC which was in effect 2013-2014 in order to move the Flyers. If that is so, then wouldn't that nullify the modified NTC for the 2014-2015 year?

  14. An NTC does not travel with a player if a) the player waives a full NTC or b) the player is traded within the terms of a limited or modified NTC. In addition, if the player is traded before his NTC takes effect, it vaporizes unless — in rare circumstances — the acquiring club agrees in writing to be bound by it.

I see your point now. What distinguishes the 2013-2014 season v. the 2014-2015 season? is it the conclusion of the Stanley Cup?

  15. NTC (2012-13 and 2013-14); modified NTC (2014-15 through 2016-17); subsequent trade may have voided clause"

As I learned today, the modified means he can list the teams he is willing to be traded to. Cap geek is still showing him with the lock sign meaning he can not be traded without a say.

  16.  Erhoff is going to want a contract to send him off to the green pastures. Do you really want to do that yet again? If we could get him on a 3 year deal

Well, he just hit the lottery. As someone (Maybe @jammer2) pointed out, you will see everything you need to know about the player in his next contract. I would like to think he would want to win after playing on a wretched Buffalo squad and considering his recent windfall, give a considerable discount to a team he things he can accomplish that with. 3 years is more than plenty.

Yet, the way people are talking, it does not sound like he is a solution for us anyway. I do like yandle, but that is not going to come without kissing some assets goodbye. I don't think it will be hefty though because he is a UFA after next season (2016-2017).

  17. Flyers really need a prospect or just picks so they can get the cap space.

I was really kind of joking, but it would not be as hard as you think. If the rumors of Dallas taking vinny for picks are true, then there is 4.5. Figure out a home for Grossman. There is 3.5. Thats 8. Keith's cap his it 5.25m. He is under contract until end of next year. I don't think it would take a kings ransom to get him because of that. (prospect / picks).

  18. I can see the purpose of this trade being a salary dump.

A salary dump that will not be realized until 4 years from now. On the other hand, Umberger does not have a NTC / NMC so, can always be moved at some point (ie. trade deadline).
