Minnesota Wild trade Cam Talbot to Ottawa for Filip Gustavsson

I share my thoughts on the deal.  I will admit, this one I get a bit opinionated.  Not sure how this really helps us to win other than provide $$$ to fill out the last few roster spots.

Sure, there won't be any real goaltender controversy but now you have to wonder if Gustavsson is good enough to start 25-30 games next season?  (sigh)

This move makes as much sense as... um, nothing really. Signing Talbot to a 3-year deal in the first place...

BG has screwed up the goalie department for the Wild in less than 6 months.

    Khudobin as well

Sorry, poor wording on my part. I meant Kuemper is the only one I can think of who really was given a chance.

But yeah, Khudobin was one of those they screwed up.

I don’t know. I like KK but I think this move had to be made. We still have Talbot for another year. This off-season we will sign a low cost backup and there are always plenty available. We will also most likely bring Wallstet over to Iowa next year and perhaps he’s ready the following year.

The list of prospects who have been ready and not had the chance to play as #1 goalie is a pretty short one. Kuemper, anyone else? In 15 years. That's a trend not a coincidence.

I don't know why but the Wild has always had a thing for 30+ goalies, no matter what they performances are.

  4. Fleury still has a lot of game in him but trading Kahkonen is a bonehead move.

Amazing how time passes by and yet the Wild FO is so incompetent or unwilling in keeping their top prospects.

The only clever side of this is that Talbot ends riding the pine where he belongs, too.

Still though, this is showcasing reason #573 why Kahkonen should be getting the lion's share of the starts, and Talbot should be the support guy.
If my team is gonna take their lumps and learn tough lessons, I want the longer term viable guy in there learning as he goes, so when it comes crunch time in the post season, he's seen it all before and isn't shell shocked in any way.

What I've been preaching for, what, 2 months now...

I'd start Kahkonen next game then after the ASG, Tandem both goalies all Feb to keep both active for the stretch.

    That's a good plan.

I'm already looking ahead and thinking next season: a clear-cut #1 goalie would be better.

Cannot see how Kahkonen with these performances would be left playing the second fiddle. I mean he's outplaying the opposing goalie in every game and he's outplayed Talbot this season.

But the story of the game: Parise with a vengeance - 0 SOG. Man! did they buy him out too late or what. I guess kudos to Guerin for pulling the trigger finally.

Kahkonen will be another name in the list of prospects getting hosed by the Wild organization.

LOL. So the team has no #1 goalie and what do they do: overpay a washed-up goalie and hand a two way contract to the best goalie in the AHL last year. LMAO, can you provide a  motivational speech than that.

That was the situation a little over year ago.

So in fairness Talbot has done better than I originally thought but Kahkonen has besides Kaprizov obviously, been the Wild's best player for the last month or so. And IMO in the big picture outplayed Talbot this season.

So back to the original argument: will the continue to hose Kahkonen and stick to the infamous Wild Goaltending Strategy for the past 20 years that the older you are, the better you are?

Throw your best guess: What team do you think will throw insane money to acquire Kahkonen as their #1 goalie for next season? The list of teams with none such is long.

Beyond stupidity to see Kahkonen play at this level as anyone's back-up anymore.

He’s a restricted free agent with arbitration rights. Unless some other team hits the Wild with an offer sheet, the Wild will have him for one more season, maybe two, depending on the arbitrator’s findings. Or they may come to an agreement before arbitration.

Cheers, we'll see. It's going to be interesting though.

The Wild goalie department hasn't find any plateau for the last decade or so. It's about time.

We need to re-sign Kahk, trade Talbott (one year left on deal) and bring kid over from Sweden.  He has enough professional hockey in SEL to play back up.  Would save salary cap money (likely), as I am sure we could sign Kahk for less than Talbotts $3.6MM....coming from $700k

He needs to be re-signed sure, but I have a suspicion some teams are very interested in signing him. He's playing lights out day in, day out. So many teams with an average goalie tandem.

5 good games in a row is big ask for a young goalie and the team might be tempted to take it a bit easier. A little bit less consistency and effort makes a big difference. I hope they prove me wrong, of course.

I don't think the age is such an issue. 42 GP, 27 wins. That's a helluva winning ratio for any goalie.

Besides, he's closer to 30 than 20. Just like I used to be...

Yeah, enough of this charade of recycling over-the-hill goalies as #1 options. Look in the future, Dean & Bill!
