  1. Okay, first of all, I truly believe Giroux so far is about Briere. I'm sorry, but if you put Briere on Gretsky's line in his prime, Gretsky looks like Pat Falloon. Briere has no finishing skills, gets tossed around like yesterday's pop diva, and banged harder than a 12 year old tourist at Penn State.

Briere is worthless at this point. And it's killing Giroux. Just waiting for Hartnell to get back to give him some size on his wing and he'll be fine.

I actually saw a reference in a post on this thread to the fact we need a puck-moving defenseman like Carle. I have to smile when I read this because 1) We had Carle and 2) Nearly everyone--beside me--wanted him run out of town when he was here. The statement was correct, it's just that I found it ironic.

For me, though, it's not so much the defense as the floundering of the forwards. I was concerned about the D on paper going in, but they seem to have stablized a bit. It's the lack of scoring, lack of offensive zone pressure, and lack of backchecking that bothers me. Collectively a bad year? Possibly. I'm not really panicking yet.

Hey! I'm a Penn State student you asshole!!!

  2. @Polaris922 Well, it was quite a while ago, but the general idea of outright cheating to secure Lemieux's sercives was correct as this paragraph from Wikipedia alludes to....man this UGLY, glad it's not my team....IMHO, it takes away the lustre of the Cup wins the Pens won under Mario.....UGLY indeed, I would be ashamed to cheer for a team that would pull this crap..

    "

The team had the league's worst record in both the 1983 and 1984 seasons, and with the team suffering financial problems, it again looked as though the Penguins would fold. Mario Lemieux, one of the most highly touted NHL draft picks in history, was due to be drafted in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. Heading towards the end of the season ahead of the New Jersey Devils, who were placed last, the Penguins made a number of questionable moves that appeared to weaken the team in the short-term. The Penguins posted three six-game winless streaks in the last 21 games of the season and earned the right to draft Lemieux amidst protests from Devils management.[5] Pittsburgh coach Lou Angotti later admitted that a conscious decision was made to finish the season as the team with the worst record, stating in an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that a mid-season lunch prompted the plan, in light of the fact that there was a high chance of the franchise folding if Lemieux was not drafted.[6] In particular, Angotti gave the example of a game the Penguins were winning 3–1, at which point general manager Eddie Johnston asked the coach "what are you doing?" in the first intermission of the game that was eventually lost 6–3. The Penguins were still, despite losing ten of their last twelve games, only two games away from losing Lemieux to the Devils.[6] However, Angotti stated that he did not feel comfortable with the plan, even though it worked and saved the franchise. Other teams offered substantial trade packages for the draft choice, but the Penguins kept the pick and drafted Lemieux first overall."

This is really eye opening. I never knew about that. Pretty sick to do, but there's no changing it now. Just makes you hate the organization that much more that the team (deliberately) sucks in order to get TWO absolute generational talents and then goes on to win the Cup in large part because of those guys, while teams like the Flyers are major contenders (almost) every year and work hard to build a team the "right" way but can't get it done.

Even this year, if the team continues to suck, HELL YEAH I want Seth Jones. I wouldn't want them to deliberately finish last to get there though. It takes away from the teams that are truly horrible and it's ethically (and in some ways legally) wrong and I wouldn't feel right about it.

  3. I remember people on the old Philly forums being kind of high on him. I wouldn't mind taking the chance but wouldn't want him to turn into another Walker and just be unused. I'd love if he turned out to have a good defensive impact, but speed on the blue line is lacking. Plus I hate having to play with such slow defenders in the NHL games.

  4. @jammer2

Anyone who's felt one of those "pads" (and I use the term loosely) up close and personal at the end of an opponents elbow knows the damage they are capable of.

I took an elbow to the throat at center ice once. Of course the ref was blind and didn't see it. But I took the hit making a pass after getting a loose puck and once I got hit I just grabbed my throat and skated to the bench and apparently assisted on a goal off that pass but I didn't see it because I was too busy trying to breathe. Those things suck.

  5. And something that has pissed me off is that Schenn and Couturier are both players with 4 star potential, and Wellwood is a 3 and a half star guy, who started out at 66 overall. I traded Wellwood to either the Devils or Wild and his overall is now 82, while Schenn and Couturier are sitting at 81... What the hell? Landeskog is also broken in the game. He doesn't get any better from his 81 overall but has 4 star potential, and is always listed as a 3rd line scorer.

  6. Just posting to see how everyone else's team is doing.

I'm in the 4th year of my GM mode (2015-2016) and my team is looking pretty different now. I won the Cup in my first and third years, but missed the playoffs my second year. I just signed Patrick Kane to an 11.15 million/year contract as a free agent (cap is 78 million, and I have 6 million in space). Traded Bryz to get Ekman-Larsson from Phoenix. My defense kinda sucks but oh well. I scored the first and second overall picks in the 2014 draft and got Sam Reinhart and a goalie prospect named Fedorov who has 4 and a half star potential. Played him in the minors last year and he went up to an 85 overall at age 19. Reinhart is in his first year in the AHL on the first line. Kubina is terribly slow but he's an 85 overall so I need him back there. I'm disappointed in how Schenn and Couturier are progressing with their potential. They should be 84/85 overall, and have both played on the first line to get more points and experience, but something isn't clicking. Couturier had to fall to 3rd line wing because of the Kane signing. Here are my lines:

    Kane (90 ovr) - Giroux (90 ovr) - Voracek (86 ovr)

    Hartnell (84 ovr) - Schenn (81 ovr) - Simmonds (84 ovr)

    Couturier (81 ovr) - Antropov (80 ovr) - Mason Raymond (79 ovr)

    Colin Greening (75 ovr) - Talbot (77 ovr) - Zolnierczyk (73 ovr)

    Coburn (85 ovr) - Ekman-Larsson (85 ovr)

    Kubina (85 ovr) - Meszaros (85 ovr)

    Gustafsson (77 ovr) - Bourdon (77 ovr)

    Fedorov (85 ovr)

    Hovinen (78 ovr)

  7. I just drafted Reinhart (winger) and Fedorov (goalie) with the 1st and 2nd picks. Had to get rid of Luke Schenn for it, and Read, Pronger, and Timonen are all gone. I have a star winger prospect and a star goalie prospect now though. Probably have to do a slow rebuild. Schenn and Couturier are only 80 overall after 2 seasons. That's some crap. "Snider" expects 48 wins and a conference finals appearance out of me after not even making the playoffs last year. What the hell?

  8. So I simmed everything up until the Finals, then I wanted to play (I play on All-Star). Like I said, horrid start to the season. Had about a 33% win percentage a quarter of the way through but finished 41-29-12. Then went 7 games in the first three playoff series, knocking off the Devils, Islanders, and Penguins. Seems like the Atlantic was amazing this season. Swept the Blues in the Finals winning 5-1, 5-1, 2-1 (Couturier with a breakaway goal late in the third and then ZacfrickenRinaldo scored in OT), and then a 3-0 shutout.

Bryz won the Conn Smythe with 16 wins, a .943 save percentage, and a 1.60 GAA. Giroux had the most points with 23, and Brayden Schenn and his brother Luke tied for 4th with 16 points each. Brayden had the most goals in the playoffs with 13. I'm interested in seeing how much each of the young guys progressed this year since I put them on the first and second lines.

  9. So in this trade what happened to Bryz did he go the other way??? Then i like it. The St. Louie trade doesn't make sense though.

Nope, Bryz stayed on the team. It was weird, but Laughton is also pretty bad in the game and only has 2 star potential, which is really low, and Wellwood isn't that great in it either, so I guess they just wanted another top forward, although St. Louis is old.

  10. @habsguy26

The game either undervalues Price or undervalues goalies in general (more likely). If you can't get what you want for him, don't trade him I guess.

But trading isn't about getting what you want; it's about getting what you need. Once you recognize that, deals become easier to make. So trade Price for Doughty straight up :P

The goalies are superhuman in this game. Bryz finished my season with the best S% and GAA. Now that's saying something.

  11. Left the Roster untouched eh? Interesting. The Blues are beastly in my GM mode.

I put Briere, Pronger, and Timonen on the trade block but the Rangers tried like hell to give me 1st and 2nd round picks for any of Schenn, Couturier, Coburn, and Meszaros. Had to decline all of those offers. I was inclined to make some trades after being 8-14-3 but they ended up winning 41 and finished with 94 points. I'm waiting for the old guys to retire or get trade offers at some point. Everyone who wanted Briere didn't have the cap space. I'll start making trades in the off-season. I'll need the space for it.

  12. My apologies... lack of sleep and I was looking at the current "playoff stats" on the Flyers home page... which actually shows the regular season stats head to head now, not playoff stats at all. My mistake. I thought that looked wrong. I deleted mine for erroneously stupid posting.

It's all good. I was just a little confused because I know Giroux had more than just 1 goal and 8 points.
