  1. Here is something that has been on my mind for a little bit and wanted to hear everyone's opinion on the subject. Are the Flyers no longer a desirable destination for UFA's? Take a look at what has happened over the past couple of years with the large contracts handed out to Richards/Carter/(I guess you can throw in JVR as well) and then Homer trades them away. Right wrong or indifferent, these trades have to leave a lasting impression among other players that their future would be uncertain, no matter what contract they signed, in Philly. To me, it seems this could be one of the problems in landing high profile FA's. We could go the route of buying out of goalie and Danny boy, but that money will go towards overpaying a player to come play for us rather than some player WANTING to play for the O & B. If I was a player and saw what org was doing with Snider pulling the strings in the background, I would think twice about even considering to play for the Flyers. Anyway, that's just what I see and am concerned that the only way to really make our team better is through a trade or the draft and not through free agency.

  2. @pags569

Not trying to be smart or anything, but I thought that saying was the opposite. A good defense makes a good offense. I could be wrong though.

It goes both ways, TIm. I have had coaches say it one way and had others say it the other. Personally I think they say it whichever way their positioned in for success. Again, I don't agree 100% with it and like OC pointed out, when you play a trap system it can really frustrate an offense

  3. Now I'm not saying I agree with this saying one bit, but could this be Homer's thinking going into next season now that we have failed to address our main concerns with our defense? Maybe Homer will try and stack the offense in hopes we can outscore opponents this season, but this philosophy has major risks. Sure, we could bolster the O by adding Ryan somehow or even Doan (too rich for my blood), but it now seems we're in a position to strengthen our strengths and not address our weakness. If he can add to an already potent offense without subtracting does he do it or roll with what we have and hope Bryz recovers from last year?

Do you guys think this could work? Is this Homer's only option at this point for next season?

  4. charter plane has arrived back in philadelphia(via Nashville) this morning. muhahahahaaa.

Spoke to soon. Just received the email from my friend. Now it's getting interesting. Not only was Philly vp's there but also vp's from another team. My friends source couldn't identify the other team. Apparently everything is very tight lipped about all of this. From him "there will be a trade between the flyers and Nashville however the rumors in the office indicate the third team Philly brought in to get their other need on the team". Now from me..... I'm so utterly lost. Is it possible? I guess? But c'mon this would be out there on twitter and everything else by now.

    Ducks and Bobby Ryan? :)

    A guy can hope....

  5. See thats not how I look at it at all. We had no Pronger last year so we are adding Weber that's an upgrade. We also lost Mez for a long period of time and during the playoff's so adding a young talented Luke Schenn makes sense going forward. We still have Timmo, Couburn, etc.

I agree that Weber is an upgrade for Pronger, but I think Schenn is more of a replacement/upgrade to Carle being lost than Mez. If Mez is part of that trade one of the young guys will need to fill that last spot on D as I don't trust Lilja. Either way though, I think we'll be just fine in the backend.

  6. Pags, the Flyers are allowed to exceed the cap by 10% during the summer, for an offseason cap of 77.22 Million. Should the Weber deal go through, the Flyers would be at 70,268,373 With the following signed:

    Hartnell/Giroux/Schenn

    Simmonds/Briere/Read

    Talbot/Couturier/Rinaldo

    Wellwood/Fedotenko/Shelley

    Pronger/Timonen

    Weber/Coburn

    Meszaros/Schenn

    Grosmann/Lilja

    Gervais

Now, you also have to include all players with one-way contracts at their full cap hit, and all players with two way contracts at a proration of the hit based on the number of games played for the big club the previous year:

    Walker: 1.7 million

    Gustafsson: 329,268

    Manning:43,902

    Homstrom: 45,731

So as it stands, the Flyers are at 72.4 Million or so. That leaves a bit more than 4.82 million in available off-season cap space. That should be enough to get Jake and Bourdon under contract, with a bit to spare. And since that about equals Pronger's cap hit, there should be little ramification when the regular season rolls around and he goes on LTIR.

Thanks AJ! If what you're saying is true, why would the Flyers need to do anything other than resign Voracek and Bourdon along with send Nashville our draft picks?

  7. I am absolutely loving this but will not allow myself to get too excited until we have a done deal next week. Seems like all signs are pointing in favor of Weber becoming a Flyer and I hope it stays that way. I do have a questions about contracts and moving players around. You guys are pretty knowledgeable when it comes to that stuff so I'll defer to the board.

When does Prongers contract get moved to the LTI list? As I understand it, and I could be wrong, the Flyers have 12 + million in cap space but that includes Pronger going on the LTI list at the start of the season. If that is the case it has been stated that we may not have the room to resign Voracek NOW, but could fit his salary in after the start of the season. Aren't teams allowed to exceed the cap by 10% in the offseason and must be cap compliant when the puck drops in October? Could the Flyers sign Voracek and go over the cap amount this summer and just put Pronger on the LTIL the start of the season? I have heard other suggestions that we could just hide a big contract in the AHL....who would the options be?

  8. I love to see this kind of scoring depth and this kind of play from the younger guys because it can help draw attention away from Hartnell and Giroux.

You hit the nail on the head right there. Lets not forget about Briere giving the Flyers another scoring threat (typical postseason....not so much for the first 82 games of the year) that may have the Pens thinking twice about certain matchups which, in turn, could free up G a little

  9. I like how aggressive bryz has been tending the nets. He looks more focused and is being proactive to the shot rather than reactive. Did Reese alter his style (think I read that he was working on changing some things with his style) or is he just finally playing some confidence? Whatever it is, I like it and hope he keeps it up. I think a lot of it has to do with the Flyers playing sound defense and taking care of business in their own zone. We still have a few issues actually getting the puck out during critical moments, but overall they have been a lot better closing down lanes and keeping the attack to the outside.

  10. Now is the perfect time to bring up Schenn. With all the injuiries, the lines are pretty much F'ed anyway so this could work out pretty well for the team. There should not be any disruption to chemistry or whatever since Lavi is scrambling anyway to find healthy bodies.

  11. What I'm seeing are all things that can be worked out. Our team defense has been terrible. The defensemen have been okay with the exception of clearing out the front of the net on occasion. The forwards need to do a better job of picking up the loose man in the slot or back door. Maybe Bryz is expecting them to be covered and not ready for the shot. I'm not defending him for letting those goals in but that could be the case. If March comes around and those softies are still going in, then I'll gladly admit I was wrong. I hope this all works out with time playing together.

  12. I say leave the current icing rule alone, but I often thought about changing it for a team that is short-handed. If you're short-handed normal icing rules would apply....after all, you took a penalty so why should you get to ice the puck?
