Sam Reinhart was traded to the Florida Panthers by the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday for goalie prospect Devon Levi and a first-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

The 25-year-old forward can become a restricted free agent July 28. He led the Sabres in goals (25) and points (40) in 54 games this season.

"Sam has established himself as one of the best playmaking scorers in the league, and we are thrilled to be able to add him to our Panthers lineup," Florida general manager Bill Zito said. "His competitiveness and hunger to succeed will fit seamlessly with the culture we are building here in South Florida."

Selected by Buffalo with the No. 2 pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, Reinhart has scored 295 points (134 goals, 161 assists) in 454 NHL games. The Sabres failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of his six full NHL seasons.

The trade gives the Panthers three of the top four picks from the 2014 NHL Draft: defenseman Aaron Ekblad (No. 1), Reinhart and Sam Bennett (No. 4, Calgary Flames).

Three other players were chosen by Florida in the top 10: forwards Aleksander Barkov (No. 2, 2013), Jonathan Huberdeau (No. 3, 2011) and Owen Tippett (No. 10, 2017). Panthers goalie Spencer Knight was the No. 13 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.

Levi, chosen by Florida in the seventh round (No. 212) of the 2020 NHL Draft, was voted the best goalie at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship. During the tournament, the 19-year-old led goalies with a 0.75 goals-against average and .964 save percentage in seven games to help Canada finish second.

Levi is entering his sophomore year at Northeastern University. He did not play any games for the school as a freshman after fracturing a rib during the WJC.

Panthers continue to add pieces to make them more formidable and competitive within the Atlantic Division.

Eichel, Skinner, and Hall got all the press on the forward ranks in Buffalo (both good and bad), but Sam Reinhart here is a legit, solid, and ready to break out NHL player who may see career production highs with the Florida Panthers.

On the one hand, I hate that the new TB rival Panthers got better here, on the other hand, this makes the rivalry spicier and much more interesting, now that Florida seems to be making moves like this that get them ever closer to being a real Stanley Cup contender.

Faaak...was hoping Reinhart would land in Calgary somehow...

Totally agree with you that Florida is getting significantly better with each move they make, this is a prime example - and like @Brewin Flamessaid above, they already have so many of the top draft picks of recent years, including our Sam Bennett☹️.

Yeah I totally believe they a Cup contender now👍

There's LOTS of players I wish would land on the Lightning, including Reinhart, however, our current cap crunch doesn't allow for anything except trying to retain our own players for now!

In the meantime, teams like Florida with moves like this, definitely close the gap between themselves and the Champs.

Once they get their blue line in order, preferably with a healthy Aaron Ekblad, and figure out who is the goalie to lead them to a Cup, look out....these guys will be legit dangerous.
