Report: Marian Gaborik out 6 months

New York Rangers sniper Marian Gaborik will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder, the team said in a news release Friday.

A newspaper in Slovakia reported the surgery would sideline Gaborik for up to six months and was for a torn rotator cuff, which serves as the shoulder's connective tissue, while the labrum is cartilage.

But a torn labrum doesn't mean he doesn't also have a rotator cuff injury. Often the force of that injury causes a labral tear.

Gaborik will have the procedure at the NYU Langone Medical Center's Hospital for Joint Diseases in Manhattan, the Rangers said. It will be performed by Dr. Andrew Feldman and Dr. Anthony Maddalo.

The 30-year-old forward was criticized for his inconsistent production throughout the playoffs.

He was limited to one goal in the team's conference final series against the New Jersey Devils after recording 41 goals and 35 assists during the regular season.

When asked during the team's break-up day whether he'd require any medical procedures during the offseason, Gaborik declined to discuss the matter.

"I don't want to talk about it," he said.
