hf101
The Jets locked in their captain to a five-year extension on Tuesday that comes with an $8.25-million cap hit. Blake Wheeler will be 37 years old at the end of the deal and is coming off a career-best 91-point season. Wheeler’s signing keeps a central piece in place for the future, but the contract will kick in at a time when the salary cap will be more of a factor for the Jets as early as next summer when there will be 10 players to sign with $27M in cap space. Those players include Patrick Laine who probably is looking for $9-10M, Jacob Trouba $6-7M, Josh Morrissey $5-6M, Tyler Meyers $5-6M, and Kyle Connor $6-7M. This group easily can exceed that $27M. While the Jets will be all in this year for a Stanley Cup run it will be interesting to see what moves Cheveldayoff makes in the future as who he keeps and who goes. hf101
Josh Morrissey didn't get the money he was hoping for in a long term contract thus opted for a bridge 2 year deal worth $6.30M, $3.15M annually. Morrissey will again be a RFA in 2020 where he likely won't accept another bargain price.

The games I've seen from Wheeler the past year he's played hard and skated well to both ends. Not a selfish cherry picker than some *cough Vanek, Laine, cough*. IMO this was a very good signing at a reasonable price and term for the Jets. Sure Laine is a great young prospect but when you look at his game closely you'll see it being miles away from Wheeler's team-first-attitude-game. All he has is his shooting/scoring ability especially on the PP. Due to his age he'll probably get a better contract than Wheeler though. Yes, very interesting to see how Cheveldayoff manages this situation.
