  1. September 23, 2023: NORWESTERS BEAT BISONS LAKEHEAD THUNDERWOLVES 5 MANITOBA BISONS 3 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofM: Schedule & Results ➤ LU: Lakehead kicks of preseason in Manitoba Quick Summary Lake: Massie (01:47 1st) , Mack (11:08 1st) , Mack (05:43 2nd) , Van Unen (10:14 3rd) , Pouliot (14:08 3rd) Man: H. Ostir (02:04 2nd) , J. Paulhus (12:38 2nd) , N. Basarab (06:18 3rd) Goal: Lake: Wright (35 shots, 32 saves); Man: Harkness (28 shots, 23 saves) This was a bit of a strange game where a lot of Bison talent was left in the stands. Nevertheless, it did answer some questions about this Bison squad. First, here’s how they lined up: Manitoba Goal 1 Harkness (30 Thornton) Defence 16 Hartje - 24 Wareham 25 Calder - 4 Malchuk 5 Casey - 9 Thiessen Forwards 11 Ostir - 19 Arpin - 20 Apetagon 10 Paulhus - 29 King - 26 Boucher 14 Zimmerman - 28 Behun - 21 Basarab 23 Fawkes - 12 Trimble - 13 Sutter Scratches G 34 Hawryluk - 35 Murphy D 6 Fry - 8 Toth - 27 Gottfried F 17 Veloso - 18 Hooker Lakehead Goal 31 Wright (30 Aiken) Defence 18 Jette - 3 Whittaker 23 Massie - 5 Turpin 2 Borbely - 28 McNeill - 8 Van Den Hurk Forwards 14 Van Unen - 27 Mack - 15 Ho 11 DeGrazia - 17 Gerrie - 21 Pouliot 16 Blackwell - 29 Edwards - 25 Massie 19 Stiles - 9 Smith - 24 Miles Scratches G 1 Cicigoi D 4 Wojciechowski - 22 Williams F 10 Badalamenti - 13 Fox The apparent Bison top line was dismantled for this game. Dylan Thiessen was moved to defence, and Colton Veloso and Jonny Hooker never suited up. Thiessen had an eventful night on the blueline. One must give him credit for going back there. Less than two minutes into the game, he had the puck on the RW side of his own goal and went to throw it around the boards. But oops. He picked the short side as Simon Harkness was en route to cover the LW post. Mid-way through the period he surrendered a break-away on a turnover and it was 2-0 for the Thundermutts. D’oh. Thiessen turned things around in the 2nd period when he made a silky-smooth PP pass to Hayden Ostir to make it a 2-1 game. The Bisons did manage to dominate the 2nd and 3rd periods, outshooting Lakehead 26-17 over that span. However, with the game tied 3-3 mid-way through the 3rd period, Harkness whiffed on a shot from Josh Van Unen to restore the Lakehead lead. Then LU added a PP goal for insurance. While one could not blame Harkness on the first two goals, this was the kind of comeback win that a good goaltender can achieve for his team. The Mutts did dress 21 players (seven defencemen). That helped when two players were assessed 10 minute misconducts on separate occasions. I also found out that the Mystery Man in #5 is defenceman Brandon Casey. He was paired with Thiessen and covered effectively for the most part. Blueline returnees Parker Malchuk and Chase Hartje were good at carrying the puck, but it seems that defence-first is this year’s motto. No end-to-end rushes from Hartje in this one. Newcomers Owen Wareham and Kian Calder looked okay to me. The Herd is now 1-2-0 and this was Lakehead’s first game. The Lakehead Norwesters (as they were known in the GPAC days) won this event last year. They then had a pretty good season, losing the OUA bronze medal playoff for the final berth in the University Cup. They were 18-6-3, and first in the OUA West. They lost to Windsor two games to one in the division final, and 4-0 to Concordia in the winner-take-all bronze playoff. Lakehead does not at present have any non-conference games on their scheduled. Not even the upcoming Christmas tour by the Bisons. So these may be their only pre-season games before they open the regular season on October 6th. Regina has had mixed results thus far. Without uploaded stats and rosters for any of their games thus far, it is hard to draw conclusions. Or even inferences. But a split with Sask followed by a loss to Minot State is peculiar. Unless Sask’s crop of WHL grads is not all it’s cracked up to be, or the Beavers are better than ACHA teams have been. The Bisons still have four goaltenders (one too many), seven defencemen (two to few), and 15 forwards (a decent number). The Mystery Man wearing #5 last weekend on defence looks to have been Lucas Fry, who had been listed as #6. My impression of last weekend’s games was that the Bisons need some offensive finish to capitalize on their significant edge in territory and possession, and hopefully new recruit Kolby Thornton will be good enough to seize the starting goaltender slot. GoBisons.ca also uploaded a story on Devon Skoleski signing in the ECHL. This was on Elite Prospects a week ago. He becomes the third player from last year’s squad to sign a pro contract, following Zach Patrick and Brett Davis. 3. September 16, 2023: BISONS END TRIP WITH LOSS After falling asleep waiting for eastern scores, here's the Saturday report. MANITOBA BISONS 2 REGINA COUGARS 4 Links: ➤ UofM: Schedule & Results ➤ UofR: Schedule & Results ➤ UofR: YouTube The Banjo-Cats live-streamed the game on YouTube, but I only found out about it early in the 3rd period via a YouTube notice. USports teams need to announce these sorts of things in advance. The good thing about a YouTube stream is that I could watch the game afterwards. The players did not have names on their jerseys. So I just covered the Bison roster. Here’s how they lined up: Goal 34 Hawryluk - 35 Murphy Defence 16 Hartje - 24 Wareham 4 Malchuk - 25 Calder 5 ?????????? Forwards 18 Hooker - 9 Thiessen - 17 Veloso 11 Ostir - 19 Arpin - 20 Apetagon 14 Zimmerman - 28 Behun - 26 Boucher - 10 Paulhus 23 Fawkes - 12 Trimble - 13 Sutter Scratches G 1 Harkness - 30 Thornton D 6 Fry - 8 Toth - 27 Gottfried F 21 Basarab - 29 King The scoring was kinda like this (SOG and time of goals was not announced): 1st UofM - Behun - 1st shot of game before stream started UofR - McCabe - PP 2nd UofR - Culling - a long shot where Hawryluk whiffed on it UofR - Runke - PP UofM - Ostir - PP 3rd UofR - empty-netter - not sure if it counted because time expired Ethan Anders went the distance in the Regina goal. There is no #5 on the Bison roster and the announcers never said his name. Of the scratched players, it could be #27 Gottfried in a different jersey but I never got a good look at him. I infer that some injuries happened on the blueline, otherwise it makes no sense to dress just 5 d-men and 13 forwards. With 5 d-men they all played a lot. Malchuk and Hartje never paired up, and neither did Calder and Wareham. #5 played with everybody. I believe I saw Boucher back on the blueline a couple of times. In any event, IMO a team cannot play a season with just 7 d-men. Last year the injuries were up front, but playing a d-man up front is no problem in my view. Four goaltenders is also too many, obviously. I am hoping the new guy Thornton pans out. He looked solid against Briercrest. But that’s a far cry from the upper echelons of the CW. Overall, the Bisons had the majority of possession and territory. They had a lack of finish and the goaltending was okay, but for that one whiff. I suppose I’ll find out more next weekend when Lakehead and Regina come to town. The Bisons are 1-1-0, Regina is 2-2-0, and Lakehead has not yet played. Briercrest is a lot better than they were in the past, but the Bisons still controlled play at most times. The Clippers were 13-9-2 last year and lost out to NAIT in a 3-game series where every game was decided by one goal. The announcers claimed that the shots were 48-42 in favour of the Bisons, but that seems a little “generous” on both accounts. I’m hoping to see some sort of summary before Saturday morning. I presume this game ends their tour. They were outscored 4-18. The Towerstars have a pretty good website with a good game story. They have one USports grad, namely Matt Alfaro (Calgary Dinos) who has a CW scoring title to his credit. It's his first year in Europe after three seasons in the ECHL and AHL. They also have a good website, where they posted the linked stories, one of which was a preview of Concordia and the other was a game report (which included an audio clip for those who speak German). In Europe, stats pages aren't what they are in North America. The team is informally nicknamed the "Rotjacken", or Red Jackets. Their preview of the Stinkers exceeds what is on the CU website. Here's a quote: The Stingers had seven new signings this summer, including three goalkeepers. With the exception of the third goalie, all signings came from either one of Canada's three major junior leagues (OHL, QMJHL, WHL) or the US collegiate league NCAA. The team 's top scorer from last season, winger Isiah Campbell , is also on the team . Marc-André Élément is sportingly responsible for the Stingers , the head coach is only 38 years old but has been working for the organization for many years: from 2006 to 2011 as a player and since 2015 as head coach. However, goaltending coach Jim Corsi has the brightest name on the coaching staff . Not only is the analytics category of the Corsi values named after him, he was also involved in Italian ice hockey for twelve years during his active career and was the national team's first-choice goalkeeper at eight world championship tournaments. Click to expand... There are no further games mentioned on the tour, so presumably CU comes home 0-2-0 and being outscored 6-15. That 7.50 GAA is unimpressive. No Corsi stats can make up for that. KAC has no USports grads that I could tell. However, 34 year-old former Jet and Moose Paul Postma plays on their defence. He had 8 seasons in the NHL, 6 of which he split time in the AHL. Cumulatively, the three OUA teams on our went 1-8-0 on their tours. The Bisons went 9-6-2 in four tours between 2011 and 2018. I also recall that UQTR did much better in prior tours of France against opposition comparable to what they faced this year.

  17. August 26: The Remparts Are Back! The Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean (CMRSJ) (in English, Royal Military College Saint-Jean) is back and is in the RSEQ's new Division 2. It is always good to see a program revived. CMRSJ had operated a Rec League team since the school was revived in 2008. Their team site has nothing newer than 2020-21 player photos, so who knows if they were even in the Rec Leagues last year. The RSEQ site does not show them in last year's college competition, either. Elite Prospects lists them as "not active". The school did play high-level inter-university hockey from 1953-54 to 1961-62 and then again from 1965-66 to 1969-70. They were in the Ottawa-St. Lawrence Conference (OSLC), which competed for the University Cup once it was established. The OSLC was merged with the Quebec-Ontario Athletic Association (QOAA) and the Ontario Intercollegiate Athletic Association (OIAA) when all three conferences were realigned along provincial lines in 1971 into the Quebec Universities Athletic Association (QUAA) and Ontario Universities Athletic Association (OUAA). The QUAA changed names to become the QSSF and then the RSEQ, and the OUAA became the OUA in 1998. It is good to see Quebec and B.C. trying out different methods to promote scholastic hockey in their provinces. 18. August 21: Bisons Make It Official and News From Edmontown The Bisons made it official with respect to three signings previously posted in this thread. The players are Lucas Fry, Brandon Casey, and Cameron Trimble. It appears that nobody has roster pages up yet, except for Elite Prospects where only new recruits are listed. There also seem to be a higher than usual amount of departures conference-wide. The Bisons have lost Zach Patrick (7th defenceman, frequently dressed as 4th line forward) and now Brett Davis (leading scorer and all-star). Also, the Bisons are the only CW team without a pre-season schedule posted. Thus far, they do not have games on Sept 8-9 announced by another team. Links: ➤ GoBisons.ca Men's hockey announce commitment of Lucas Fry, Brandon Casey & Cameron Trimble The Mythical Monsters keep going with recruiting announcements. They have signed Eduard Wruck, a native of North Vancouver who last played for the OCN Blizzard (MJHL). He has also played for Port Alberni (BCHL), Steinbach (MJHL), and Weyburn (SJHL). He's a defenceman who, in 93 games of Junior A, has 7 goals and 32 assists. They tout him as a big body, but he has very few PIMs. Links: ➤ MacEwan: Griffins' goal of getting grittier continues with addition of OCN Blizzard product Wruck ➤ Elite Prospects: Eduard Wruck dm8895 said: I listened to the interview and there were a few highlights, which cast light on the lack of WHL recruiting announcements. - A lot of 2-year AHL deals are being offered to WHL grads. This "tips the scales" for a lot of players who in the past would have been hesitant to forego their scholarship cash. - There was very little on new recruits, and it sounds like irons are in the fire but it is not like it used to be. Even a year ago. There was also discussion about there being more Junior A recruits now and in the future. - They might have a recruit from Mexico! IMO, you could add that remote learning makes it possible to cash your scholarship while playing pro. I wonder how many players might end up doing this.
  19. August 18: Bisons Sign a Newfoundlander BRANDON CASEY - D - Edmundston Blizzard (MJAHL) I found out this signing not from Elite Prospects' list of confirmed transfers, but from their Bison roster page where I noticed a new name popping up. This happened before with Cameron Trimble (they did list him on the USports transfers on August 16th). Born in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland, he has played junior hockey in Rimouski (QMJHL), St. John (QMJHL), Grande Prairie (AJHL), and Edmundston (MJAHL). This follows a stint in high school at Newbridge Academy in Nova Scotia. So once he plays in Manitoba, he will have covered a majority of provinces (6). 20. August 17: CANADAWEST.TV RETURNS AND MACEWAN RECRUITS I bought my CW.TV pass already. The links are up. The All Access pass is $89.99 and a single sport is $34.99. We'll have to see if the touted improvements materialize. Right now the CW.TV site features the on-demand Ukrainian tour from December-January. I doubt that the Bisons will draw close to 8,000 to any game this year. Links: ➤ Canada West: 2023-24 Canada West TV passes now on sale ➤ Canada West: Visaic, Canada West Extend Partnership Through 2026 ➤ Canada West: CanadaWest.tv Recruiting announcements across the CW have hit the skids for several weeks now. MacEwan have, however, announced two transfers and one recruit. They have a goaltender transfering from Concordia (Edmonton), a forward transferring from Carleton of the OUA, and a defenceman from Lloydminster of the AJHL. This gives them about a 50% roster turnover. The goaltender from Concordia, Eric Ward, was 6-10-1, 4.05 GAA, .868 S%. Those numbers aren't good, but in his Junior A days, over three seasons, he was 47-28-11, 2.72 GAA, .908 S%. The forward, Liam Ryan, is from Carleton. He never played last year and the year before had no points in 10 games. In three seasons in the BCHL he had 38 points in 88 games. He also had two cups-of-coffee in the WHL. His top offensive season was 2019-20 in the BCHL, where he had 12-9-21 in 51 games. They tout him as a defensive player, which must be true. The defenceman, Tyson Kowalchuk, comes from the Lloydminster Bobcats of the AJHL. He had 21 points in 56 games and wore an "A" in his final season. 21. July 29: CW RECRUITMENT SUMMARY I have wondered aloud about the lack of WHL recruits by CW teams so far this off-season. (Everywhere except Saskatchewan, that is.) Also, teams like Alberta and Calgary have no recruits at all. Saskatchewan, MacEwan, and Manitoba have a very high turnover already.
  22. July 26: Bisons Sign an 8th Junior A Recruit CAMERON TRIMBLE - F - Neepawa Titans (MJHL) Here's another signing discovered from Elite Prospects and not yet announced by the Bisons. Signing number eight makes it four forwards, three defenceman, and a goaltender in the recruiting bin, all from the Junior A ranks. This represents a larger-than-usual turnover. There are still few announcements of WHL players entering the CW. Sask has 8 and TWU has one from a couple years back. Surely there is a flood of unannounced commitments yet to come. Will the Bisons get any? Trimble is from Gladstone, aka "Happy Rock", and was a fan of Neepawa as a kid. He's not the scoring forward the Bisons need, with 26 goals and 31 assts for 57 points in 94 post-Covid games. He did wear an "A" and also had 117 PIMs. He's only 5'11" and 180 lbs, so I don't know how physical he can be. This new announcement is Skylar Cameron, a defenceman from the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL. He's their 4th recruit, and 2nd from Junior A, to go with an Austrian and an ECHL/WHL transfer. Links: ➤ TWU: Men's Hockey New Recruits There seems to be more than the usual number of CW departures this season. Former Steinbach Piston Brad Schoenbaert has keft Bedrock U to join the Kansas City Mavericks of the ECHL. He had four full seasons in the CW, plus the Covid season. He had 53 points in 83 games in those seasons. Links: ➤ UofC: Schoonbaert signs pro deal in Kansas City
  23. July 21: Bisons Get Another Captain LUCAS FRY - D - Flin Flon Bombers (SJHL) This is another signing announced at Elite Prospects, but not yet at GoBisons.ca. Fry looks like a tall (6'2") and thin (209 lbs) defenceman. He's from Winnipeg, but after a season with Steinbach in the MJHL he went north for three seasons in Flin Flon (one being a 1-game Covid season). He was team captain and led his team to the SJHL final, which followed a decent run in the Centennial Cup in 2022. He only scored one goal, but had 108 PIMs in 54 games last year. He also had a severe injury situation where a skate blade cut his arm. Hopefully, that is not habit-forming. This gives the Bisons three new defencemen to go along with three new forwards and one new goaltender. All are from Junior A leagues, in a season where the CW seems to be short on new WHL grads. 24. July 16: News Roiund-Up I thought there would be some news about recruits from the Bisons and/or other CW teams. But no such luck. So here are some stories being saved. Such as the Manitoba Connection with the Vegas Golden Knights, including two Bisons. The 2023 players include: Zach Whitecloud - He's a Dakota Sioux, born in Brandon and started his career with the Virden Oil Capitals in the MJHL. Keegan Kolesar - He's anther Brandon boy, who was drafted to Seattle of the WHL. Nolan Patrick - He's a Winnipeg boy, who played with the Brandon Wheat Kings. He never played a game in 2022-23, which is the 2nd season out of six where he was injured the entire season. Brett Howden - He's from Oakbank, which is where the Ice were supposed to build a WHL-sized arena. He was drafted by Moose Jaw in the WHL. Mark Stone - He's another Winnipegger who went out to play in Brandon. Former Knights' players include: Ryan Reaves - Yet another Winnipegger who got his start with the Wheaties. But no cups for him, as he is off to Toronto. Cody Eakin - He's another Winnipegger, but he started in Swift Current in the WHL. His NHL travels landed him with the Jets for a brief time, but he's now in Switzerland. Cody Glass - Another Winnipegger, drafted by Portland in the WHL, and now in Nashville. Brendan Leipsic - Like Glass, he's a Winnipegger drafted by Portland in the WHL but now in the KHL. He only had a half-season in Vegas. Adam Brooks - Another Winnipegger who was drafted by Regina in the NHL. He only had 7 games with Vegas, and even had 14 games with the Jets in 2021-22. He played for Lehigh Valley in the AHL in 2022-23. Off-ice personnel: Kelly McCrimmon - GM - Though he had the misfortune of being born in Saskatchewan, he escaped to play junior with the Brandon Wheat Kings, where he went on to become GM. In total, he had 32 seasons as player/coach/GM in Wheat City. He also eventually owned the franchise and did not sell until he was two years into his Vegas tenure. Vaughn Karpan - Director of Player Personnel - He played for the Bisons from 1982-83 to 1984-85 with time off to play for Team Canada in the 1984 Olympics. He then played for the national team through the 1988 Olympics. Bob Lowes - Assistant Director of Player Personnel - He came from Prince Albert, so he likely needed remedial education. He played for the Bisons from 1985-86 to 1988-89, and was a player/assistant coach in 1987-88. He also coached the Wheat Kings for 9 years. Broadcasters: Gary Lawless and Shane Hnidy - They worked for TSN in Winnipeg but moved to Vegas when the Knights entered the NHL. Lawless is not from Manitoba, but Hnidy was born in Neepawa and played for the Atlanta Thrashers before they headed north. From Jets to Vegas and Back: Laurent Brossoit - He started in the Vegas net these playoffs before being injured. He played three seasons for the Jets, went to Vegas for two, and is headed back to the `Peg for 2023-24. Connor Blake is a good golfer, and took a shot at qualifying for the U.S. Open. He won the first level, and fell short in the second. Links: ➤ MRU: Cougars’ defenseman Blake takes to the links at US Open qualifiers Holy Trinity has a couple of stories. In prior announcements, other CW players to have signed pro contracts are Zac Patrick (Manitoba to Sweden), Brad Schoonbaert (Calgary to Kansas City - ECHL), Jared Freadrich (Alberta to France), Kade Jensen (MRU to Utah - ECHL), and Dawson Davidson (Alberta to Denmark). 25. June 30: Bisons Get a Goalie & Forward The Bisons announced the recruitments of Kian Calder and Josh Paulhus (both previously disclosed at Elite Prospects, and posted above) and a new goaltender and forward (neither yet disclosed at Elite Prospects, or elsewhere). KOLBY THORNTON - G - Aurora University Spartans (NCAA III) Goaltending was a weakness for the Bisons last season, ranging from poor to mediocre. All three goaltenders had a stint being the “hot” guy. Hopefully, Thornton (a returning Winnipeg boy) is the answer. He has good numbers. He started junior with the Neepawa Natives (MJHL), moved to the Chilliwack Chiefs (BCHL), and then landed with the Lloydminster Bobcats (AJHL). He has collected accolades everywhere he went: 2018-19: MJHL Rookie of the Year with Neepawa Natives; 2019-20: Chilliwack Chiefs' community service award; 2020-21: Only played two games due to Covid lockdowns; 2021-22: AJHL Goalie of the Year and Lloydminster Bobcats’ Team MVP; 2022-23: NCHA All-Conference and All-Second Freshman Team with Aurora University. In his final season of junior, his numbers were 26-13-2, 3.15 GAA, and .913 S%. In university his numbers were a comparable 12-4-1, 3.36 GAA, and .915 S%. For good measure, he also made the Dean's list in 2022 and 2023. So those Mike Ridley Scholarships seem likely. He’s 6'0" and 205 lbs. and comes from Winnipeg, though he played his whole junior career up in OCN. He was a point-per-game player in the MJHL, but that seldom translates into CW scoring prowess. The team still needs a WHL grad who can score. He actually looks bigger than a mere 205 lbs., kind of like Dustin Byfuglien. Hopefully, he can hit! The linked story from GoBisons.ca covers him and Josh Paulhus. Links: ➤ Elite Prospects: Riley Zimmerman Career Stats ➤ GoBisons.ca: Bisons hockey add offensive flair with signing of Niverville MVP Josh Paulhus, OCN captain Riley Zimmerman The Bisons officially announced the commitment of Kian Calder, and that story is linked. He’s another honour roll student! My post from June 14th has his various links. Also, the Herd’s regular season schedule is now posted. No announcements of pre-season games from them. All we have is that game at UND. This week’s announcements give the Bisons one complete unit of three forwards, a defence pairing, and a goaltender. Saskatchewan is the only team with confirmed (albeit by Elite Prospects, not the team) WHL recruits thus far.
