  1. Just thought I'd create a thread about this. Everybody probably remembers the good old days where they use to wear Cooper and Jofa helmets and use Northland, Christian, Sher-Wood, and Koho sticks. My question to you guys is what did you wear when you played hockey? What do you miss about the equipment of the past and what do you like about the current equipment players use?

  2. @radoran The reason Canadian teams like Quebec moved in the mid-90's is because the Canadian dollar was weak. Its stronger than ever now. You're telling me the Quebec providence wouldn't welcome back another Quebec-Montreal rivalry?? Seattle failed back in 1920's, you could hardly use that as evidence because teams were much less stable back then, I think Seattle would be a great hockey market and it would create a natural rivalry with neighboring Vancouver. All in all I think we can agree that these ones I have mentioned would probably be better than Atlanta. As you may have noticed the NHL has had 2 failed franchises there and I hope to god they have learned their lesson.

  3. The reason Kharlamov was so good was because he played with Petrov and Mikhailov on the same line. I think Kharalomov's skill was definitely increased by that fact. Still, he is probably the greatest forward to never play in the NHL.

  4. @flyercanuck They weren't paid to play hockey it was just their job they were paid to be in the Soviet military. Its like saying you're paid to be in the Army, you aren't paid to be a Infantryman, an artilleryman, a gunner etc.

Oh and I love the typical Western view you have. Thinking I don't have a point that Canadians and Americans are full of themselves...Americans and Canadians aren't exactly known for having the smartest populace so doesn't surprise me.

I like how you change your mind about him always playing ruskie teams to only playing them 99% of the time. Face it, he was good. With him in net the Soviets held their own against the NHL best whenever they came over to North America to play...

And yes it is egotistical thinking to think you are better at everyone no matter what. You do realize the reason the NHL is so popular is because its been around for so long right? The Soviets didn't get serious about hockey until after WWII.

  5. @flyercanuck Yes, Canada did have an ego problem. They thought they were the best. They made predictions that they would sweep the series in 4 games and that the Soviets would be an awe of them. Then came game 1 and that quickly removed all the confidence they had in that they were the best.

Tretiak played NHL clubs many times and faired pretty well in case you didn't know. You say great sportsmanship like it was within Tretiak's control what team he played for HAHAHA. The Soviet national team was made up of amatuers that were good enough they could play in the NHL. They didn't "pretend" to be amatuers they just maintained their amatuer status. I guess when you come from a country like the United States or Canada it's hard to admit you aren't Number 1 at everything, I should know I was raised in the U.S. and apparently we are the best at everything. I mean god forbid you admit a country as disgusting and vile as...dare I say it? COMMUNIST RUSSIA! Had a legitimate hockey powerhouse for a national team...

  6. Yet, they'll talk expansion...

It's really unfortunate that you have a commisionner who is building the foundation of its league on lies, deception... on sand, really. If he truly worked for the good of the game, he should stop the boys' club he has sitting at the Board of Governors and start making decisions that will make sense. Stop the gimmicks ala "skills competition to end games", thinking it will draw fans, and attack the true problems :

    1. Have a US TV deal that's worth while, not just in the playoffs if/when they feel like it.
    2. Instate a program of marketing in the markets where he shouldn't have expanded to start with, in order to save those franchises.Afterall, it would be cheaper than running franchises like the Coyotes losing millions upon millions each year.
    3. Relocate struggling franchises in traditionnal hockey markets, where hockey matters. Those are solid grounds to build upon. Then look at expansion, but not too much at a time!
    4. Stop with the gimmicks. No more shoutout, no more instigator rule as we know it, be consistent with suspensions, fringe players or star players being punished the same way and get rid of the two referee system on the ice, too many are incompetent.
    5. Any new arena being built should be Olympic size.

    That'd be just a start!

I feel for Dale Tallon who, in my opinion, is doing an excellent job at building this team the right way, through draft and young players, and for his hockey staff.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Bettman has overstayed his welcome and has been doing more harm than good for a while now...

  7. Yes, the thing the NHL needs to realize is just because a large metro population exists doesn't mean it can support an NHL team. I pray to god the NHL has learned its lesson from Atlanta Flames and more recently the Thrashers. Atlanta is no place for hockey. The population there just doesn't care enough to support and attend the team's games. I think more franchises should be placed in Canada. The only issue is where.

  8. @jammer2 Neither side had their very best on the ice within that series. Not just your "perfect" Canadians...And you basically just proved my point with that video when I said they won on dirty play, cheap shots, and taking out enemy players with the intent to injure. I mean god forbid if you are a Flyers player you are actually taught to use skill and trained to perfect your skills but no in the 70's if you were a Flyers player and you met a team that was better conditioned, better prepared, and just could plain out play you then you resort to "dirty hockey".

  9. @hf101 The thing with the North Stars was bad management if you ask me. The fans loved their hockey though. Thats why its nothing short of incredible that the North Stars moved away. You look at Atlanta though. Thats a huge metro area and the NHL has failed in two franshise ventures there to date both lasting under 15 years. Move a city to Portland or Seattle. I'm sure they'd fair better.

  10. @jammer2 The Flyers in the 70's played dirty hockey and dragged the game of hockey through the mud to win the cup twice. The Flyers in my opinion have the worst fans also (Almost all pro sports fans of Philly are loud, ignorant, and obnoxious in my experience). I've just never had anything great that I've experienced seeing that team play. Went a Minnesota game once and all the Philly fans were such hooligans I wanted to punch them in the face. And its easy to win against a team like the Soviets when your team advocates putting out hits on enemy players, throwing cheap shots, and playing downright dirty hockey instead of trying to beat them with skill. Like I said, the Oilers dynasty is an NHL team I admire because they won on pure skill and talent and good hockey. Messier, Gretzky, Coffey, Kurri, and McSorely just to name a few.

  11. @flyercanuck Tretiak is at least top three. If you had read what I said I actually said that had Tretiak been allowed into the NHL goalies like Roy wouldn't be able to be put into the same sentance as him. The fact that Tretiak didn't play however, leaves that one up for debate. Honestly, I'd put Tretiak at number 2 to ever play in front of a net. Number 1 is probably Brodeur because he has like every record a goalie could possibly get and the guy has been playing like forever. Tretiak is like my idol. He played during a time that Canada had a serious ego problem and believed they were the undisputed hockey gods and that they would crush the Soviets. That series was so close nobody could be called a loser if you look at it. They were both on equal playing ground.
