  1. @flyercanuck

I think he is feeling the pressure of playing in a hockey market. The last 2 teams he played for are not based in traditional hockey market cities so the pressure wasn't there. I think the pressure combined with all the other stuff going on (Winter Classic, 24/7 cameras, historic aspect of the Philly, etc.) is affecting him. Hopefully, he will adjust.

Remember 3 yrs ago, Tim Thomas won the Vezina. The next year, he lost his starting job to Rask. Everyone thought Thomas was just a one hit wonder. He came back last year and won the Vezina again. My point is, maybe this is just a down time for Bryz and hopefully he will rebound to play like the world class goalie he has been touted to be.

  2. Any doctors posting here?

I'm not a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!

I skate with a guy that has/had a torn abdominal muscle. This is the second time he's had one. He said the first one took almost a year to heal. This time, he took about 3 months off without skating but he is still affected by it when he plays. There is a 20 yr age difference between him and JVR, so JVR should be able to heal faster.

My gut feeling (no pun intended) is JVR will need surgery to fix his problem.

  3. "The game got off to an ornery start as Vancouver's Kevin Bieksa fought Calgary's Tom Kostopoulos three seconds after the opening face-off. Kostopoulos suffered a cut near his left eye as Bieksa landed his first punch. They renewed their hostilities after fighting each other last January."

Bieksa nailed him with a superman punch at the begining of the fight. He must have had some MMA training. I've seen him use that punch before.

  4. Both teams are very banged up. You know about the injured Avs; the Phillies are in a similar boat, with Claude Giroux, Chris Pronger and Sean Couturier among the names on the injured list. Oh, and that Ian Lapperiere guy. We still miss you, Lappy.

    The Phillies? Wow.

They only partially redeemed themselves by giving props to Lappy.

  5. Maybe you had sarcasm intended, if not than this is the rub. Look at Crosby- out again. That said (and every individual is different) I would like to think that a "seemingly" grazing knee to the head is far less severe than Crosby getting clocked twice in two games or Pronger getting a brutal stick to the orbital bone and then another head first check into the boards.

One thing is for sure: times have changed. The entire management recognizes the greatness of Giroux and will take EVERY precaution to make sure he is 100%.

No sarcasm intended. Claude skated (hard) again today for 90 mins. I agree with you...I don't think his concussion was any where near as severe as Crosby's and I believe they will take every precaution. However, I don't believe they will hold him out just for the sake of holding him out. I also believe he is closer to coming back than what is being reported. He has to pass the ImPACT testing BEFORE he is allowed to skate. He is beyond that. Here are the steps listed on the ImPACT web site:

    • Step-wise return to play

    • No activity - rest until asymptomatic
    • Light aerobic exercise
    • Sport-specific training
    • Non-contact drills
    • Full-contact drills
    • Game play

Giroux is at #4, possibly #5. He may get to play in Dallas on Wednesday but I expect to see him play against the Rangers on Friday.

  6. Go back to soft elbow and shoulder pads. There may be a few more injuries in those areas, but a lot less concussions. I can't for the life of me figure out why they haven't banned those armor-plated things.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the glass. The rinks used to all have the plexiglass and the boards would gived a little when the players hit them. Now they use the tempered glass and the boards don't budge on a hit.

  7. Absolutely unreal. What the hell is their training staff doing, or not doing?

The Flyers' medical stuff is completely incompetent. They have been proving it over and over again.

But the bigger issue is the growing number and frequency of concussions in the NHL. There have to be changes made.

I don't get the connection. Not quite sure why this is a training/medical staff incompetency issue. These guys are getting concussions on the ice, not in the training room.

  8. http://www.philly.co..._adversity.html

he scraps, works hard if not always smart; if he would take 1/3 less penalties (eliminate the stupid ones) we'd have nothing to complain about other than his haircut, which he would probably roll with.

He's still taking some but I don't think he's taking that many stupid penalties. 29 games in and he only has 30 PIMs. I'm guessing that 20 of those PIMs are from fighting.
