  1. There was three memorable games for me, since I live 4 hours north of Toronto I don't get to see that many games in Philly:

    1) Mar.2/93 - the night Mario Lemieux returned from treatments and the Philly fans gave him a 5 minute standing ovation at the old Spectrum and the Flyers won 5-4. I met my boyhood idol, Bernie Parent, which was awesome.

    2) January 2006 - another game against the Penguins, I got to go into the Flyers dressing room after the game because of Brian Savage was playing on the team. Got to take a photo with Brian and couple of my buddies at centre ice.

    3) June 2010 - game 4 of the 2010 Stanley Cup finals, the atmosphere was awesome and the Flyers won the game to tie up the series. Like it was posted earlier, the national anthem was great and the fans were nuts during the game.

  2. I know this was discussed the over the weekend, didn't see where anyone had posted this...

Flyers chairman Ed Snider told reporters, "If a guy's good enough for the Hall of Fame, he's good enough to have his number retired."

That means Howe's No. 2 soon will be hanging from the Wells Fargo Center rafters

Well it's about time, Howe was great for the Flyers when he played here and deserves to have his number retired. It should have been done earlier.

  3. Strategy in exposing this crap.

The problem is there will be at least 10 mediocre teams that will trap like Tampa Bay just to win some games. Lavi should have had a game plan to counter the trap but he didn't. It looks bad on the league overall, the last thing the league wants is to see the game go back to the way it was played in the mid 90's with the Devils. It's too bad the Flyers didn't win in regulation to make Boucher look like a fool for playing this system when he has players on his team like Stamkos, St.Louis and Lecavalier and he's basically handcuffed them from being creative by playing the trap. I don't mind a 2-1 game as long as both teams are getting lots of chances and the goalies are playing well.

TAMPA BAY, Fla. -- The Flyers will have Brayden Coburn back on the blue line for another four years.

The 26-year-old defenseman has agreed to 4-year, $18 million contract extension, a league source told CSNPhilly.com.

His cap hit is $4.5 million – a very nice bump from his current two-year contract extension that was paying him $3.2 million.

Coburn has been a virtual constant on the back end with partner Kimmo Timonen since the second half of the 2007-08 season.

Once a player who had pretty good offensive numbers, Coburn’s role has changed in recent year’s to that of a shutdown defenseman. Viewed from that perspective, he likely would have gotten similar money as an unrestricted free agent next July had he waited.

    (More coming...)

Overpay buy 500k imo. 1.3 mil raise? He's done nothing to warrant that much, should've been 4 mil/year. Oh well hope it comes without a NTC/NMC.

Timonen will come off the books either next year if traded or after next year when his contract is up. I agree it would have been nice at $4 million but unfortunately that seems to be the going rate for defensemen nowadays. Now it will be interesting to see what Holmgren does with Carle.

  5. I think all Flyers fans knew Leino wasn't worth what Buffalo gave him, he's a $2 million - $2.5 million per year player not $4 million plus. As for Carter, he wasn't your typical playmaking centre like a Brad Richards which is what Rick Nash needs. Mike Richards will fit in well in LA unless he ends up enjoying the nightlife more than hockey. Getting the players and picks for those players will end up helping the Flyers in the long run.

  6. If he could play like Ron Francis then the Flyers have a very good player on their hands. Looking a few years down the road the Flyers will have Giroux, Couturier and Schenn down the middle, not bad. He's very mature as a 18 year old playing in the NHL, he's playing well on the penalty kill and chipping in with a few goals, hopefully he plays consistently all year.

  7. Like others have posted, the Avs don't win the cups without Patrick Roy. The Flyers gave a lot to get Lindros and still might have won a cup with him if Clarke would have gone out and got a goalie. Hextall was never the same goalie after his rookie year, he put up good numbers in the regular season but always seem to faulter in the playoffs by letting in bad goals at the wrong time. When Vanbriesbrouck and Curtis Joseph were free agents, Clarke decided to go the cheap route and sign Beezer who played for him in Florida. I believe Joseph would have been better for Lindros and the Flyers at that time because they could have played a more free style of play and counted on the goalie to make the big save when needed. But I guess we'll never know. As for the Lindros trade, most of the players the Flyers traded away didn't go on to have great careers but having to give up Chris Simon and another 1st rounder did hurt. Simon would have looked awesome in a Philly uniform.
