And some more games that have gone final since my last post....

    Hartford 1, New Jersey 0

Whalers-- With their throwback sweaters, they continue to scratch and claw towards the top of the Metro.
Devils-- Still just shy of the playoff line....and these win one, lose one games won't cut it

    Tampa Bay 4, Columbus 2
Lightning-- Bolts continue to feed on the weak....
Blue Jackets-- With the exception of an angry Boone Jenner, looking to stay with the Hawks, Sharks, and Ducks for the lottery pick.

    Ottawa 5, Toronto 3
Senators-- Trying to salvage some respect this season
Maple Leafs-- Still somewhat sleepy out of the break....

    Philadelphia 3, Seattle 2
Flyers-- Determined to insert themselves in the playoff festivities....they don't want to go away.
Kraken-- Determined to insert themselves in the playoff festivities....they DO seem to be going away...

    Winnipeg 2, Pittsburgh 1
Jets--- Oooo, look...a WIN...FINALLY! Can they resume plans for the SC parade in the streets of Winterpeg??
Penguins-- As per @notfondajane... "They just don't care!!"

    Finally someone is hearing what

I'm seeing. The Penguins ARE PISSING ME OFF BIG TIME.

It's hard for me to see that Sid, being a fierce competitor that he is, genuinely doesn't want to make the playoffs.  I find it hard to believe.

I was talking about the core in general. It seems to me that when they get close to jump over a couple of teams to get a Wild card spot they go on a short losing streak

True,.but we are both built for a long playoff run, week at center , not enough scoring and I'm not sold on the defense.

I'm not sure if the core of the Pens want to make the playoffs they are playing hard enough to make it look like they want to! I'm hoping the Pens catch fire at the beginning of March and April to make the post-season. Then make a deep run there.

Wild one of a handful of teams Fleury only had single digit wins against.

Better effort although the Islanders didn't seem to want to be there at all.  Cal Clutterbuck was pretty annoyed after the game at his team's poor effort.

Fleury always had trouble against the Islanders and Flyers. I  always thought he was a fan of those teams. I broke a few glasses and plates over the way he played against those teams. I even had the local police called on me because I was so pissed off at him. (I'm glad I knew the cop well.)

I'm still glad he got to 552 wins.

I just looked through the stats of this game.  Interesting, I have seen today exactly what I wished to see from our team for a long period of time: to produce at least 40 shots per game and to place 5 goals per game. And they did it (our 40 shots vs 21 shots and we placed 5 goals in Islanders net).

Congrats today also to Mats Zuccarello for his 800th game record in NHL career!!!

It seems lots of surprising events happened

Congratulations to Zuccarello for playing 800 games. I hope he plays to at least 1000 games!

Yes they had good support from the fans, but the owner wanted a new stadium plus a large area to incorporate a shopping mall type thing.
It didn’t help his case when a bunch of sexual harassment claims surfaced.
Norm Greene pretty much pissed on his fan base, to the point that the fans frequently chanted Norm sucks.
Fan support may be the downfall of the Wild, as they will always fill at least half the arena no matter how bad they play.

Thanks Tom. I appreciate the response. I like the rivalry between North Stars and Pens.

I hope the Wild stay in Minnesota.

Candidly, I thought this was the year we saw decline in Pitt. The Karlson signing surprised me---Does Dubas really think that core can go on forever?

I'm not sure on that. I think in 2026 draft the Pens have 9 picks as of now. (Hopefully they will keep them.)they should have started that a few years back.

I heard that Guentzel is to go to Vancouver for a 1st rounder, a prospect and a NHL ready player. It's a rumor.

Sincerely, it is sad for me that we won't see Stars this season. As more we will play against this highly experienced team as more we will get a better level of team's experience. Their results against us this season are very impressing. Scores 8:3; 4:0; 7:2 including 4 SHG( total their 19 goals vs ours 5 goals) in 3 games are outstanding.

Do know the reason why the Stars left Minnesota?  I'm curious! I thought they had descent support.

We have a solid team that plays hard every night , and we are in just about every game. Alot of this is the Torts factor, he’s like Keenan where he gets the most out of the players, that other coaches would not be able to do. I do think there are some players that are playing way over their heads and will eventually come back down, Seeler and Walker being prime examples.  These guys are close to thirty and pending UFAs ,and like most players in a contract year , they are having career years. I have seen this many times, once a nice big new contract is signed they return to the mediocrity they always were. I hope we are not fooled by this and re-sign either of them. Keep the rebuild going and trade them at the deadline. I still think we have a long way to go and are weak in several key areas ,especially center , until we have two legit young centers we will not be contenders, I think we could also use a  big two way dman as well.

This maybe true. You are still ahead of a Crosby-Malkin led Penguins team!

    Greetings:

Time flies.  It's hard to imagine I just posted for Game 42.  I plead guilty to senior status--as you age, time really does seem to move faster.  Nonetheless, the fact that we're finished half the regular season is amazing.

So, here's my take.  If you had asked me at the beginning of the season if we'd be seven games over .500 at this juncture, I'd say no.  If I recall an early post, I thought we'd be lucky to finish at .500.  Unless we really drop off, particularly after March 8th, that shouldn't happen.

But...there's the deeper question, and I am torn on it.  Are we getting a Tortorella-driven head fake that leads us to believe a rebuild is taking place?  Or are we building a foundational core of young players who will take us to elite (top 8 to 10) in the league within 2-3 years?  All too often we've felt we're at that point, but discovered we were a year or two away from being a year or two away...blah, blah.  I look at goaltending and say we're set.  D may be taking shape, and the Drysdale acquisition may really help.  But our forward corps is different.  Meanwhile, we don't have a real game changer, and as I've said before, if MM shows up, I will consider it icing on the cake.  When you look at standings in the Metro, it's a reminder that the distance between very good to excellent isn't much.

One thing is clear--this management is candid and playing the long game.  Their handling of the Gauthier gig says a lot about their brains and commitment.

    Thoughts?

Just a note. You guys are ahead of a Crosby-Malkin led Pittsburgh Penguins team. (Who, by the way, don't want to make the playoffs!)

I guess that is what happens when you select a guy that was a die hard Pens fan.

Chucky should have known that; and that he would never suit up for the team he grew up hating.

Glad DB got something in return. Now Drysdale just need to stay healthy.

I remember when the Flyers traded Eddie Van Impe to the Penguins. He didn't want to come to the Penguins. Something was said to him and he eventually reported to the team.

People arent gonna wanna hear this but hockey is a gimmick in Philly.  It gets zero radio time and very little other press as compared to any of Eagles, Sixers, or even Phils.

Part of this has to do w how soft NHL has become and how expensive games are, but part of it - I think - is Philly just aint a good place to settle down.  Its violent and rundown w massive drug problems, major homelessness issues, and awful public schooling.  Obv a pro player isnt sending their kids to public school but most people do and thats part of the reason for the gangs, drug use, and  everything else.

Philly used to be an awesome NHL destination...those days are long gone.

I'm hoping Philadelphia can turn that around. I think that comes from the southern border. I hope Philadelphia and Pennsylvania can turn that around. Basically to get better prospects for both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
