  1. Craig Button's final list with Sanheim at #8...I know this has been pointed out but nice to actually see.

One interesting thing to see about that is that Fleury is right above him. There numbers are similar and given that fact that Jammer pointed out that Sanheim was given more responsibility halfway into the season and that is when he flourished, there numbers are not that far off. Sanheim has a btter +/- and Fluery better offense. But there is nothing saying that Sanheim could not have put up similar number had he had his expanded role all season.

Interesting too that both play in the WHL, which makes the comparable even more valid.

  2. Bortuzzo hasn't had any injury issues.

Ok, again you would know better than me. I am just looking at the numbers:

    2013/2014- gp 54 (big pens)

    2012/2014- gp 46 (15 big pens, 31 little pens)

    2011/2012- gp 57 (6 big pens, 51 little pens)

    2010/2011- gp 79 (little pens)

    2009/2010- gp 75 (little pens)

    2008/2009- gp 23 (kitchener rangers)

So, in six seaons, he has only played two full seasons. Whats the story there?? Is he riding pine?? if so, I wouldn't think you would want him as part of your solution. He is not a young chicken anymore (25) and has yet to play a complete season at the NHL level.

  3. I'll say even though it don't tell the whole picture that -27 is ugly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In all fairness, Buffalo scored 1.81 goals a game. They allowed 2.96. that is 1+ goal allowed a game. 82 games. Everyone on that team was a minus. In fairness, that squad was mostly and AHL team.

Not saying Ehrnof did not have culpability (don't really know as I don't watch AHL games much), but I can see how a -27 could happen.

  4. Orpik was no longer the #1 P&K guy. I love Brooks but his days here are over unless he takes less than $2 mill to play. He's just not the same player anymore.

You would know better than me. I just use TOI numbers. Orpiks was your PK toi leader, with Skuderi a close second. Oppik was second on TOI overall with Maata closely behind.

Niskanen ran the PP because of Letang's injury. Letang and Martin are plenty able to.

I know they are but BOTH had significant injury time last year. You still need a B unit. I know Maata spent some time there and perhaps can step up, but whose his partner going to be?

At the end of the day, NIskanen and Orpik were your 3/4 guys on toi a game (letang / martin #1 pairing at 24 and niskanen / orpik #2 pairing at 21).  Is Maata ready do step up to the 3/4 role? If so, you are looking at just filling one of your 3/4 spots and then back filling your 5/6 spot. Thats still no chump change as D men are at a premium. You can have grossman if you want. I will drive him to pitts for you.

I guess you will be alright. You would know better than i.

  5. Dude, Kane and Toews just asked for 12 million dollar max length extensions. They may not be crying now, but they are looking at next year in a panic

I totally get that. Next year is next year. A 1-2 millions diff in cap is negligible compared to what they are asking (essentially 35% of the teams cap). Regardless of what the cap, chicago will be crying.

  6. It was pretty cool to see the warm reception for Brindy.

That one thing does not even closely redeem the other antics / shenanigans / disrespect to other teams / people. It was a flat out disgrace.

  7. What great value they got at the #10 pick!   Could you even imagine a future line of Getzlaf, Perry and this absolute beast of a winger Nick Ritchie. Nick is 230 now, but I think he will grow another inch and play at 6'5 and 240. This kid has it all, skating, toughness, wicked shot....I thought the Leafs and a few other teams may have made gigantic screw up by letting Ritchie get by them. Will be interesting to track the career trajectories of Nylander and Ritchie going forward. The Leafs blew it by not drafting Ritchie......LOVED IT!!!  I don't think Nylander will be a bum by any means, but Nick is special.

I really wanted Richie too (to the extent, might have been willing to give a B. Schenn + our 17 to move up). The problem is that I don't think Richie is ready yet, so that would leave a hole in a current roster, but I think we could have filled it from the farm. 2 years from now, Richie would be a monster sitting next to Grioux and Voracek- perhaps the best line in hockey.

  8. The Pens have $14 million to sign 6 guys with... I don't think we're crying about that. Lol.

Actually 7 guys (currently have 14 signed). You have 3 RFA's and the rest are open roster spots. If I was you, I would not get too giddy, because you have to either resign / replace both Orpik and Niskanen. Niskanen is your #1 power play unit qb (not sure you can count on Letang- especially with his injuries last year. Orpik is your #1 pk d man (not sure you can count on martin because of injuries).

So, for all sense in purposes, whether you want to call the 1/2 dmen or 1a / 2a dmen (with Letang and Martin) at the end of the day you have to resign or fill those holes. Those two holes are not going to come cheap. I think you are looking in the neighborhood of 10+ million. That leaves you 4+million to sign your remaining 5 guys (three being rfa's). I guess the question is the 2 open spots (UFA spots) are you going to fill from the farm / draft, or resign or sign a different UFA.

By august, you may start to shed a few tears. Not as many as Boston and Philly, but tears none-the-less.

  9. that might be the EXACT reason they traded for him. especially, if the whole goal was to clear cap space.

as i understand it, if they buy him out, it will only cost 2 mill against the cap.

Yeah, but really, if they were to do that, why not just buy out Hartnell and let him go play where he wants (other than the years thing).

  10. Anyway I didn't boo Tock, always liked him here, hated to see him leave every time he left. I do wish he got a better reception, but Penguin hate overrides pretty much everything

Tocchet actually cracked me up when he cracked a joke to Rutherford and said "See, I told you it wouldn't work". I think Tocchet knew that people were booing the penguins and not him. They choose him to announce the trade because they thought him being an ex-flyer would squelch the boos, but it didn't work. Kind of comical when you think about it.

  11. I didn't notice Shanahan. What I did notice was the disgusting and ridiculous behavior of the Flyers fans. It was utterly embarrassing

I could not agree more. I was embarrassed to be a Flyers fan yesterday. I expect that from Eagles fans, but not from Flyers fans. I felt like I was watching a high school assembly in the gymnasium.

  12. Only Holmgren would offer that deal not knowing the ramifications.  It's not like the NHL changed the rules AFTER the deal.

Well, all things being equal, Lou Lamoreillo is a pretty bright guy, and he trumped what Homer tried to do. Just saying.

  13. i don't think it'd count against the max contracts.  because the contract is gone.

yeah, we need a warm body there. I get that. But we just lost 2m that we thought we had in the pocket. Press on VLC. Personally, I don't get the urgency of moving hartnell now- otther than pressing a youngling harder.

I will eat crow if Umberger scores 20g and 17a.
