  1. Per the Calgary Herald

    http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/hockey/calgary-flames/First+round+pick+Sean+Monahan+earns+right/8978476/story.html

From the moment he was drafted, Sean Monahan planned to make the Calgary Flames.

So far, so good, for the young man.

Monahan — who turns 19 on Oct. 12 — is part of the team’s 23-man roster heading into its season-opening bid Thursday in Washington.

“Sean has earned the right to be with us,” general manager Jay Feaster said Monday afternoon at the Scotiabank Saddledome. “We will continue to monitor Sean’s progress on a daily basis. We’ll see how he stacks up, how the games come to him, what kind of ice time he gets. Then we’ll make a decision that we believe to be in the best interests of both Sean Monahan’s continued development and also in the best interests of the Calgary Flames organization.”

The Flames have nine games — nine games, that is, in which he appears — to make up their minds. If he’s found wanting, back to the Ontario Hockey League he’ll scamper.

Should the six-foot-two centreman skate in a 10th National Hockey League date, he is here for the duration.

“I don’t think he has to play a lot or play a big role or play every game right away,” said Feaster, who nabbed Monahan sixth overall at the draft. “One of the nice parts about the nine-game audition is we decide when those nine games will take place. They don’t have to be the first nine. They could be spread over the course of three months if we decided we wanted to do it (that way).”

Good for Monahan for making it difficult for the Flames... If (and it's a big if) they keep him I can see him getting plenty of ice time.

  2. That is pretty pathetic...

Domi didn't like being checked by McGinn and just decides to deliver a flying elbow to the head. There is no way that this can be spun as anything other than an attempt to injure, you can't say that this is a hockey play gone wrong. Perhaps Branch has an opportunity for a move to the NHL player safety dept... seems he would fit right in...

IMO the correct response for Domi there would be if he doesn't like the hit then throw some punches. That is the kind of fight everyone wants to see, born out of emotion and frustration, not staged crap.

Ten games for O'Connor for that hit? Seriously??? I don't know what the aftermath of the hit was, IE player injured on the play but either way a BS call IMO. When hard clean hits result in suspensions it makes you wonder what the game is coming to...

  3. If management's approach is to draft BPA (which is what the Flyers generally claim to do) then the coach has to adjust his system to fit the players, or he has to ask for different players (trades, free agency).

This sums it up in a nutshell to me... Ultimately a coach cannot rely on just one style of play. They have to be able to adapt their pattern dependent on A) the players available to them and B) the nature of the opponent. All very well playing run and gun hockey with the Pens, not so much against NJ or NYR. If the coach is unable to adapt his style then IMO he will not be successful in the long term...

  4. Good article by Bill Meltzer today on Hockeybuzz...

Does the talent level on the Flyers' blueline match the amount of money being spent on it? Probably not, although I have much greater concern about whether the mix of players is right than I about whether any are individually competent enough to deserve starting spots in the NHL.

On a one-by-one basis, the Flyers do not lack for decent NHL defensemen, but is there collectively the right mix of mobility and muscle, puck movement and strength down low in the defensive zone, and of positional savvy and physicality? Based on what was displayed in the preseason, I'd have to say the answer is still no.

In particular, I still question whether this is the right group to manage and move the puck in Peter Laviolette's system, especially in light of the average-at-best defensive traits of much of the top half of the team's forward corps. There is still questionable cohesion between the forwards and defensemen, and the addition of Streit and the start of a new regular season aren't going to be magical elixirs on their own.

    Couldn't agree with him more.

  5. I firmly believe that Dan Bylsma is in a hotter seat. The Pens have been placed with a "Cup or bust" label and since 2012 when they got embarrassed by the Flyers and again last year by Boston, I think he's gotta get a Division and another Deep playoff 6-7 run.

The point with Bylsma is that he essentially is not under threat until the Pen's season ends. Short of them struggling to make the playoffs (and as much as I dislike them I don't see that happening) then he is safe until the playoffs are over. Should they again meet with an early or disappointing (think Boston-like) end to the playoffs then I could totally see him getting canned.

IMO the article is talking about coaches who are likely to get fired if their teams don't perform early on.

  6. @Howie58

3rd in the Metro IS achievable IMO, however there are a lot of variables.

With regard to the PP and PK, that is actually one area of the team game that I am comfortable about. My bigger concern is their 5 on 5 play and the offensive struggles they had last year.

I still have major concerns over the puck movement out of the zone, even with Streit signed it doesn't appear that anything has changed, albeit there is only a small sample size (pre-season) to work with.

Stolarz is at least two years away from being NHL ready IMO, if not more. Heeter... well let's just say that based on last season with the Phantoms he doesn't look ready for a back up role yet either. Mind you, you could probably have the reincarnation of Ken Dryden and Patrick Roy in net for the Phantoms and they wouldn't look good either  :P I do hear that Michael Leighton is looking for a contract...

I certainly think G will be a top ten scorer, and quite possibly Jake too. Last year they were 1 and 3 points out of doing just that, the year before G was 3rd overall. Also BSchenn and Simmonds should hopefully see an uptick in their production playing with VLC.

I could see Lavy getting scapegoated early on if we are below .500 after a dozen or so games

I could certainly see Lavi getting canned but I am not sure I would describe it as scapegoating in the traditional sense. Whilst you can argue he has been dealt some bum hands in terms of defensive players, there comes a point when a good coach recognizes that the players he has are not capable of playing the system he wants and amends the system to take account of that, rather than putting square pegs in round holes... I like his offensive instincts but the all out attack, up tempo pressure system does not seem to be working, where is the Plan B???

  7. Jannik Hansen has signed a four-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks, the team announced Sunday.

The contract, which begins next season, will run through the 2017-18 season and is worth $10 million, according to multiple media reports. It is the same length and value as the contract Chris Higgins signed that begins this season. Hansen and Higgins could be the team's top wings on the second line in 2013-14.

The 27-year-old Hansen had 10 goals and 27 points in 47 games for the Canucks. Hansen has 50 goals, 131 points and 131 penalty minutes in 315 career NHL games. He had 16 goals and 39 points in 2011-12, and his role with the team has continued to expand since collecting three goals and nine points during the team's run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011.

    Per NHL.com.

Not a bad price for Hansen but it says a lot that their second line winger is essentially a 40 point guy... Combined with Higgins I would say that there is not a huge amount of offense gonna come from this line IMO. Of course it depends who centres them also...

  8. @EDI-Flyer

Domi was never going to stick in the NHL this year. He's got great hands. He needs to play a lot more aggressively. Last year he spent most of his time playing perimeter hockey. He had the big highlight show-pass to Horvat in the OHL finals against Barrie that the sports channels kept showing over and over.. Nobody mentioned he was pretty much invisible the rest of those 7 games.

I never thought it likely that he would stick, given the feedback from you and others prior to the draft. That said I do think he has an opportunity to be a dominant player in the OHL this season. However true (and I am not disputing what you say!) it is ironic your saying he needs to learn to play more aggressively given who his father is  :P

And yes, I know you don't mean aggressive in the Tie Domi sense of the word...

  9.

    @TSNBobMcKenzie
No Bo Horvat on ice for VAN practice. Expectation is he is being returned to LDN in the OHL.

and I said what? about Torts playing rookies,  ;)

While I understand what you are saying, during his time with the Rangers he was always happy to play good young players... Derek Stepan, and Michael Del Zotto for example, albeit Del Zotto had already played 40 odd games for Renney. It didn't happen so much in Tampa which to my mind is more due to their appalling record in the draft...

  10. Per NHL.com

Apparently the NHL can actually admit it made a mistake... who knew???

NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League announced today that it has reduced Phoenix forwardPaul Bissonnette's suspension from 10 games to three (3) games for his conduct in leaving his team's bench to join an altercation during NHL Preseason Game No. 9 in Phoenix on September 15, 2013.

In the game in question against the Los Angeles Kings, Bissonnette was assessed a game misconduct under Rule 70.6 for leaving the Players' Bench illegally during an altercation or for the purpose of starting an altercation -- an infraction that also calls for an automatic suspension for 10 Regular Season games.

Because this incident occurred during a preseason game, there was less video evidence than is typically available for these types of reviews, and as a result, the precise timing and circumstances pursuant to which Bissonnette entered the ice surface are not apparent in the video. What is clear in the video is that by the time an altercation ensued, there were six (6) Coyotes skaters on the ice as compared to the normal five (5) skaters for the Kings, and that Bissonnette was the “extra skater” that had entered the ice surface and joined the altercation. Bissonnette was assessed a game misconduct penalty for leaving the Players' Bench illegally under Rule 70.6.

Subsequently, Bissonnette was assessed an automatic 10-game suspension pursuant to Rule 70.10. Bissonnette appealed his automatic 10-game suspension pursuant to Section 18.17 of the CBA. During the appeal process, video evidence not available to the League at the time of the assessment of the suspension was reviewed. Although not conclusive, this new evidence lends support to Bissonnette's contention that, at the time he entered the ice surface, he did so legally, to substitute for Phoenix forward Max Domi. That contention is also supported by various of Bissonnette's teammates and by Phoenix Head Coach Dave Tippett. None of the on-ice officials definitively contradict Bissonnette's contention. Rather, because Domi never exited the ice surface and, in fact, later joined the altercation himself, the officials merely (and properly) determined that a violation of Rules 70.1 and 70.6 had occurred.

Given the totality of these circumstances, including the lack of conclusive video evidence, and Bissonnette's credible assertions regarding the intended legality of his substitution for Domi at the time, the League has decided not to apply the 10-game automatic suspension to Bissonnette under Rule 70.10.

Still, the League has concluded that Bissonnette must bear some responsibility for the situation that occurred on the ice in which six (6) Phoenix Coyotes' Players ended up participating in an altercation, principally involving and targeting Los Angeles forward Jordan Nolan. In this regard, the League is assessing Bissonnette a three-game suspension for his role in the events surrounding the on-ice altercation with Nolan under Rule 28 -- Supplementary Discipline.

It is important to emphasize the uniqueness of the facts in this case, particularly as it relates to the lack of adequate video evidence revealing the precise circumstances and sequence of events that are critical to the application of the automatic suspension.

Typically, in reviews of Rule 70 violations (as was already the case once this pre-season), there is conclusive video evidence that allows for the proper verification of the events on the ice, and the appropriate application of the Rule in question.

As a result of the League's determination to reduce Bissonnette's suspension to three games, Bissonnette and the NHLPA have agreed to withdraw their appeal. The matter is now closed.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Bissonnette will forfeit $11,346.15. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Bissonnette will miss games October 3 vs. New York Rangers, October 5 vs. San Jose and October 8 vs. New York Islanders. He will be eligible to return October 10 against Detroit.

  11. the Leafs will be forced to walk away from an arbitrators decision

    I think it depends on

A)What happens with the cap (IMO it is likely it will get higher...)

B)Whether they resign Phaneuf or let him walk. Even if they resign Phaneuf I cannot see it being at his current $6.5 million

Having said that they also have to find cap space to re-sign "The Slasher"

  12. Good deal indeed for the Rangers. Considering Stepan has a career average 0.66ppg and last season was +25 and near enough a ppg player I would say they got him cheap.

You have to think that they are trying to get something sorted out with Hank and Cally before they hit UFA at season end...

  13. Sent down where players might be looking to prove something against the "future NHLer".

Always a possibility but if it's going to happen it's less likely against a kid of his size and grit than to a high end forward at 5"11" 160lbs...

To me it's still the right thing to do. And I say that as someone who is currently watching Morin play against the Shawinigan Cataractes. Just the best thing for their development IMO.

    EDIT

Sadly it doesn't appear that Morin is playing tonight, good game for the Oceanique though, 2-0 up in the first...

  14. @AlaskaFlyerFan

Cool story AFF, also great that his draft will be in Philly next June.  Makes you wonder if the Flyers will find a way to draft him.

TSN's preliminary ranking has him at 8... a few others I have seen have him around 15 so I guess it depends on what kind of season he has (and the Flyers for that matter) as to whether he is available for us or not. I like his all round game but it is difficult to project just yet as to the player he might become in the NHL.

  15. Absolutely the right move for Flyers management, who had very little to gain in playing him, and a lot to lose

Spot on. This is the right move for the kid's future, no point in trying to rush things. Go back and really dominate this year in the Q and next year at training camp may be a whole different story...
