  1. i was thinking about that....did you ever do the thing in highschool where you made a little box out of balsawood or something and then put an egg in it and the egg had to survive a two story drop? or maybe 10foot drop. or whatever. point is, i think you could make a helmet that would help a lot. problem is, the players would have to decide to wear it. does cool 21 yearold super star wear the gigantor uber-safe helmet, or the sleek bauer one? when we think forcing players to wear visors is a bridge too far....

and gretzky's old ringett helmet is popping into my head now.

plus, that wouldn't do anything about blows to the face or chin that can ultimately have the same effect.

    ok, so, you're right. nevermind.

well... i'm sure that if there's anything can be done, someone is looking into it. but, it seems that gone are the days where the guys would just play through it and we'd never be the wiser. i mean... i've probably had a few concussions in my youth, but i don't remember anyone sitting out of high school football with a 'concussion'. i also don't really remember many pro athletes sitting out until lindros. suffice it to say... it just sucks.

  2. I can't believe some fans are not pissed to see the best player out with injury. How can you shrug and say "it's ok", like you don't even care. If we go on a losing streak i'm sure that will all change.

i think it's a matter of not complaining about something that there's nothing anyone could do about. it doesn't help our situation to complain about it. sure... it sucks. big time, but we have to look forward. to who can get it done for us now ... and to when he can come back.

  3. I think the larger question is whether or not the NHL is negligent toward its players by allowing these kinds of injuries in the workplace.

Now, don't get me wrong.. I know hockey is a physical sport, just like football. But with the controversy surrounding football players committing suicide, and then the same thing happening in hockey, and then add how common concussions really are when there's contact to the head, one would think that the NHL has an obligation to its 'employees', just like any regular company does. It's not enough for them to say 'well, it's a hazardous work environment.'

They've been trying to eliminate them by imposing heavier penalties for deliberate hits to the head. But you probably can't take those out of the game. What about better helmets? Smaller shoulder pads? Players keep getting bigger and stronger, and so does the gear.

Not really sure what they should do either way, I'm kinda just spitballin' here. But in the end, I do think the NHL needs to protect its most valuable assets. Guys like Crosby and Giroux are infinitely more valuable to the game than guys like Cooke or Steckl.

the problem is... there's is nothing more they can do. helmet technology won't do anything. it's the brain sliding into the skull. no helmet can stop that from happening after an impact. they're doing what they can, as far as penalizing plays that result in impacts to the head, but beyond that... i just don't see what they can do.

there is inherent risk in impact sports. do we do away with the impacts? i don't think any player, past or present, would advocate that. so it is what it is... until they figure out how to heal the brain from such injuries.

  4. Had to be his best game as a flyer last night. Many of those Pitt chances were quality. While we're on it... Mez had a great game tonight as well. He's been stinking up the joint this year so far. Maybe his best game of the year.

  5. http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?p=40304227

the hit isn't vicious, but he took another big shot to his shoulder, i think he's going to have this shoulder injury the rest of his career , and while i liked him when he was here, the flyers may have dodged a bullet by trading him. i think his days of "playing larger than his frame" are numbered if not over..

I think you are generally right about his style of play... But, this hit had nothing to do with that. It was a good, clean hit. Richards very selfishly, and unsmartly, over retaliated. He should have just taken a number and tried to lay a big hit later... Legally.

Edit: I meant to say that it was a clean hit ON him and not BY him... And that's the point that doesn't jive with OP comment

Sorry to see he's injured, though... He's been doing great.

  6. Holmgren is a graduate of the Bobby Clarke School of Media Relations.

We have no interest in Comrie.

He should have added a "i liked our team before, I still like our team" after that. In fact, he should just add that statement after every injury report he gives.

  7. He's doing a blog in Czech( http://isport.blesk.cz/clanek/blogy-redaktori-jaromir-jagr/113372/ve-philadelphii-jsou-ted-na-me-prisni.html ) , but the real story was the inset pic and how hot his gf ( http://isport.blesk.cz/clanek/svet-hvezd/113146/jaromir-jagr-se-do-svatby-nehrne-je-to-jen-kus-papiru.html )is... Daaaayyuuum.

I mean, it's hardly a surprise that a highly paid athlete has a hot chick, but props must be given when they are do. Nice work jags!

Btw, I expect that one of you will provide us with a perfect translation to his blog...

  8. Holmgren: "Jagr is day to day and may play Friday against the Ducks" translation=Jagr will be out two more weeks.

Holmgren, "I have tremendous confidence in Jim McCrossin and our medical staff", translation=How the %$#@ is this guy still working here.

"Jagr is day to day and may play Friday against Ducks" = Jagr died a few weeks ago in a bizarre zamboni hit-and-run involving Zherdev and Mario Lemieux.

    I know... It's tragic...

  9. I think we need a clarification here: If Nodl outscores Jagr, but he does it while in the AHL, does that fulfill Aziz's prediction????

    YES! i didn't say **where** he'd outscore jagr. ;)

haha... this could make your prediction come true. maybe he gets picked by another team and plays every day.

  10. This shutout is all on bak....and maybe a bit of help from Lundy :P Rangers (like I expected) are an improved squad. The kind of team that is constructed for the playoffs...

sorry man... it was all my fault. i should have known that as soon as i posted this i'd put on the jinx.

  11. i think what's getting lost in this argument of who starts when and how many times is that bob hasn't exactly been stellar this year either. for those who thought he should have been named the starter this year, before we went and got bryz, bob has struggled as much as bryz. of course, there have been games where bob was excellent as there were times bryz was excellent. the one thing i can agree with is that bryz needs to be given the majority of starts. he's being paid to be the #1 and they need to see what he can do as that. that means putting him out there night after night, whether he stinks up the joint or not.

i'm not really sure what lavy is trying to do with the goaltending situation right now, but i think he's playing with fire as far as his job goes. i know he just wants to win games, but instead of taking it one game at a time with the goalies, he needs to look at the big picture.

  12. The latest incarnation of the "We welcome you" thread, We welcome you...

Also Harry Houdini, we welcome you... (I put that because that was the example Bak used when creating this thread on the original board...it is a kind of homage)

Cheers for starting it up again! We welcome you thread... We welcome you.

  13. The talking heads on the radio tell me that due to the Flyers cap problems Schenn likely will not make an appearance during this rash of injuries. Aziz of course can comment on this much better than I.

Like you I am impressed with the scoring and wonder if they can keep this pace up all year. Also the defense needs to tighten it up a bit. I am looking forward to and dreading at th same time the next home game vs the Pens as this should give us an idea as to where we wre realistically. Last time I said that the caps bashed our heads in.

Yeah.. The pens will be our biggest test yet. That should be an interesting game either way it goes... Marking my calendar.

  14. 80 goals... 3 more than 2nd, 6 more than 3rd. Color me impressed. All of us were wondering where they were gonna get the goals to replace the ones they've lost and it seems they've more than replaced them.

It's a total team effort and I'm really liking that. We'll get to see that really tested now with all the injuries. Will we be getting another look at schenn anytime soon?

  15. There is so much speculation as to what the jersey may look like but I think this is close to what we will see. This jersey came courtesy of EBay and even has the winter classic date and info on the inside collar.

I am trying to post this and receiving an error the post is too short.

Since I can't post the photo, here is a link to the photo:

Do not like it... Nope, not one bit. Rags jerseys are much much better.
