NEW YORK -- — The New York Rangers needed a top-flight performance from their starting goalie and Igor Shesterkin gave them one from start to finish against the Calgary Flames.

Shesterkin stopped 30 shots for his first shutout of the season and the Rangers beat the Flames 2-0 on Monday night for their fifth straight win.

Will Cuylle and Jimmy Vesey scored for the first-place Rangers, who are 6-1-1 in their last eight games. Shesterkin recorded his 12th career shutout and second straight win to improve to 21-12-1 on the season.

“I just want to have fun and stop the puck,″ Shesterkin said. ”It was an important night for me. I felt great.”

Jacob Markstrom finished with 29 saves as the Flames snapped a four-game win streak.

After a scoreless first period and several dazzling saves by Markstrom, Cuylle finally broke through with 7:29 remaining in the second as he slid a loose puck past the goalie in the crease for his ninth goal.

“I was just trying to get to the net,″ Cuylle said of the play which led to his goal. “Shesty played amazing and it was an all-around great effort for our team. Obviously, it felt great to get the winner.”

Vesey had an empty-netter with 19 seconds remaining in the third for his 12th to seal the win.

“We've been stressing our defense coming out of the break," Vesey said. ”Hot team and a lot of firepower up front. Good effort for us. It was a gritty win."

Shesterkin's best late-game save was swatting away a high shot by Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson three minutes into the third period.

The 28-year-old Russian goalie has struggled at times this season and recently gave way to backup Jonathan Quick, who started and won three straight games. Shesterkin returned for last Friday’s 4-3 overtime win at Chicago before his shutout performance against the Flames.

“Everyone knew he would get back to the way he plays. Everyone goes through slumps, it’s just more noticeable when it’s a goalie and everyone’s eyes see it more,” Rangers captain Jacob Trouba said. “The confidence you see in him, that’s who he is when he’s feeling it,″

The Rangers went 0 for 3 on the power play to extend their slump to 0 for 17 over the last seven games.

Markstrom denied Rangers forwards Vincent Trocheck and Blake Wheeler from in close late in the first, then stopped Wheeler again five minutes into the second.

“It wasn't our best game but it was tight until the end," Flames captain Mikael Backlund said. ”Both goalies played really well tonight."

“We had a really slow start and Jacob kept us in the game during the first period for sure,″ Flames coach Ryan Huska said. ”Their goaltender played well too. He made some key saves at key times."

Zadina has 2 goals and 2 assists for career-high 4 points in Sharks' 6-3 victory over Flames

Updated: Feb 16, 2024, 01:45 am

CALGARY, Alberta -- — Filip Zadina had two goals and two assists for a career-high four points in the San Jose Sharks' 6-3 victory over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night.

“It felt pretty good, obviously,” said Zadina, who just a goal and two assists in his previous 18 games. “We haven’t scored as a line in a little bit but we got rewarded for the work we’ve done recently.”

Luke Kunin also scored twice, Justin Bailey had a goal and two assists for his first career multi-point game and Mikael Granlund added a goal. MacKenzie Blackwood made 31 saves to help San Jose improve to 15-33-5.

Nazem Kadri, Mikael Backlund and Andrei Kuzmenko for Calgary and rookie Dustin Wolf stopped 25 shots. The Flames have dropped two straight to fall to 25-24-5 — and have lost five of their last six at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

“These are games and days that you look back on and they suck, but at the same time, it’s a great opportunity to evaluate yourself as a player and a person and come back stronger,” Wolf said

After setting up the tying and go-ahead goals in the second period, Zadina put it away with goals 37 seconds apart early in the third to make it 5-2.

Zadina deflected Marco Sturm’s shot high into the air with it toppling over the head of an unsuspecting Wolf and landing in the net.

Zadina’s second goal came on a shot from the left wing that got a piece of Rasmus Andersson’s stick on the way in.

“I think for Z, he’s obviously a very, very skilled player that can put the puck in the net,” linemate Justin Bailey said. “He’s a high pick and a skill player for a reason and you saw that showcased tonight.”

Reimer stops 38 shots to lead Red Wings to 5-0 win over Flames

Updated: Feb 17, 2024, 08:15 pm

CALGARY, Alberta -- — James Reimer stopped 38 shots to lead the Detroit Red Wings past the Calgary Flames 5-0 on Saturday.

Patrick Kane and Lucas Raymond had a goal and an assist each for the Red Wings, who snapped a two-game losing streak. David Perron, J.T. Compher and Dylan Larkin also scored.

“It’s nice when you contribute to the team,” said Reimer, who recorded the 30th shutout of his 14-year NHL career and second with Detroit this season. “That’s all you want to do. You want to be part of the team and you want to help get to our goal. You just try to be ready whenever your number’s called."

Reimer was also in net when these two teams last met in Detroit on Oct. 22. He stopped 29 shots in a 6-2 Red Wings victory that game.

Jacob Markstrom started in goal for the Flames. But he was pulled at 6:41 of the second period after allowing four goals on 12 shots.

“It was short,” said Markstrom of his disappointing performance. “I saw all four pucks go in. It’s frustrating. You want to be there for the guys and the fans that paid money to come watch us play.”

Dan Vladar then made eight saves in relief for the Flames, who’ve lost three straight games and six of their last seven at home.

“That’s tough,” said Calgary captain Mikael Backlund of his team’s recent woes on home ice. “That’s not acceptable. We want to play well in front of our fans. We want to win games and if we want to be serious about playoffs we’ve got to win games at home.”

The Flames carried the majority of the early play and had a great chance to open the scoring thanks to the efforts of the line of Jonathan Huberdeau, Yegor Sharangovich and Andrei Kuzmenko.

At 12:34 of the opening period, Reimer made a great glove save on Kuzmenko’s slapshot. It came shortly after he turned aside a wrist shot by Huberdeau.

Kane opened the scoring at 14:56, just three seconds into a power play after Calgary rookie Connor Zary was called for high-sticking. Playing the point, Kane blasted a pass from Moritz Seider into the top corner over Markstrom’s blocker.

The Wings made it 2-0 just 61 seconds later. Compher took a pass from Raymond and fired a quick shot that deflected off the shaft of Calgary defenseman Rasmus Andersson’s stick and past Markstrom.

Larkin tapped in a nice cross-crease pass from Kane for another Detroit power-play goal at 5:12 of the second.

Just 89 seconds later, Detroit went up 4-0 after Perron wired a pass from Andrew Copp past Markstrom, who was promptly relieved of his duties by Calgary coach Ryan Huska.

Raymond rounded out the scoring with 4:20 remaining to play.

Nazem Kadri's 3-point game leads Flames over Jets 6-3

Updated: Feb 19, 2024, 08:59 pm

CALGARY, Alberta -- — Nazem Kadri had two goals and an assist as the Calgary Flames rallied from a two-goal deficit to post a 6-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday.

“I feel like we’ve done that several times this year,” said Kadri. “When things start to snowball and stack against us, we’re able to reset and refocus and pull out a big win against a great team.”

Jonathan Huberdeau and Andrew Mangiapane had a goal and an assist and Oliver Kylington and Blake Coleman also scored for Calgary, which snapped a three-game losing streak. Rasmus Andersson had a pair of assists.

Pulled in his previous outing, it was a solid bounce-back game for Flames’ netminder Jacob Markstrom as he made 28 stops.

Sean Monahan scored all three goals for Winnipeg, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

“We don’t play like that. That’s just not our hockey game. That’s as soft as we’ve played, as loose as we’ve played,” said Jets coach Rick Bowness. “Shifted up the pairings, shifted the lines, it didn’t matter one little bit. We just had nobody going other than Sean and our goalie.”

Connor Hellebuyck had 28 saves for the Jets. Hellebuyck had won his last three outings in which he had only allowed three goals on 90 shots.

Down 3-1 in the first period, Calgary’s comeback started at 14:09 when Coleman scored on a setup from Mangiapane.

The tying goal came 4:58 into the second when Kadri deflected MacKenzie Weegar’s point shot past Hellebuyck on the power play.

The Flames surged in front 4-3 lead at 16:06 of the second when Huberdeau was set up neatly by Andersson, cashing in his ninth goal.

“It hasn’t been easy on us lately, so for us to come back like we did tonight shows a lot of good things about our team,” said Huberdeau.

Calgary got some breathing room at 13:18 of the third when Kadri wove into the Jets zone and set up Mangiapane’s one-timer that made it a two-goal cushion.

Kadri put the game on ice with an empty netter at 18:03.

Monahan scored three goals in a span of 5:58, giving him 17 goals on the season.

“I think I’m just more comfortable making reads,” said Monahan. “We’re getting pucks to the net. When you get a couple on the power play you start getting some confidence and it goes a long way.”

Monahan’s natural hat trick was his second career three-goal game. His first was as a member of the Flames in Philadelphia on Nov. 18, 2017.

In his 200th game with the Flames — one of six in franchise history to reach that plateau — Markstrom became the fifth goaltender to win 100 games.

Kadri pots the winner in overtime, Flames edge Bruins 3-2

Updated: Feb 23, 2024, 02:01 am

CALGARY, Alberta -- — Nazem Kadri scored an unsassisted goal 3:56 into overtime to lead the Calgary Flames to a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night.

Kadri took the puck up ice on a 3-on-1 and fired a shot into the far corner past Linus Ullmark just seconds after Jakob Markstrom stopped David Pastrnak at the other end.

“I was exhausted by the end of that one, just an absolute track meet,” Kadri said. “Nice to come out on the proper side of that one. Marky made some great saves for us. Gave us the opportunity to go cash in.”

Oliver Kylington and Martin Pospisil also scored for Calgary. Markstrom made 32 saves for the Flames, who have won two in a row on the heels of a three-game losing skid.

Kadri leads the Flames with 50 points (20 goals, 30 assists), just six shy of his production last year, his first with Calgary.

“He’s one of those guys that hates to lose more than he likes to win,” said Flames coach Ryan Huska. “So that’s why I think you see him elevate his play.”

Charlie Coyle scored both goals for Boston, which extended its road point streak to 11 games (7-0-4).

“We had chances to end the game. That’s hockey. It’s an inch or two there and it’s a different story and we’re feeling great about our game,” Coyle said.

Ullmark stopped 27 shots.

“We didn’t come out the way we wanted to,” he said. “We knew what needed to be done to be successful out there and we showed that in the second and the third and we battled back and stuck with it and got a point out of it.”

The Bruins trailed 2-1 after two periods but took just 2:33 to tie it in the third when Coyle raced past a flat-footed MacKenzie Weegar and swooped in alone on Markstrom to score on a backhand-to-forehand move.

Kylington opened the scoring at 12:55 of the first when he scored for the second straight game, taking a pass from Andrei Kuzmenko and whipping a shot under Ullmark’s arm.

Coyle tied it at 18:41, capitalizing on a blunder by Markstrom. After racing out of his net to clear a puck, he whiffed on it and Coyle fired in his 19th goal of the season.

But 42 seconds later, Calgary retook the lead on Pospisil’s goal. Kadri and Connor Zary combined to get the puck in front, but after Ullmark made the initial stop, Pospisil was there to poke the loose puck in.

Boston carried the play in the second period outshooting Calgary 11-5, but neither team could score with both goaltenders making big stops.

Markstrom’s 211th career win moves him past Tommy Salo into second place for most wins by a Swedish-born goaltender, with Henrik Lundqvist atop the list at 459.

“He’s the backbone,” said Kadri. “That’s what all great teams have, they have a guy in the crease that can make some timely saves and to win a championship, to win playoff games, to win playoff series, you need timely saves and you need timely goals and we saw both those tonight.”

After a stretch of sustained pressure, Kuzmenko got a good look from the top of the faceoff circle, but Ullmark made a glove save.

With defenseman Matt Grzelcyk out with a foot injury, Boston inserted veteran defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk into the lineup and called up Ian Mitchell from the American Hockey League’s Providence Bruins.

Noah Hanifin has 2 goals and an assist in Flames' 6-3 victory over Oilers

Updated: Feb 25, 2024, 02:10 am

EDMONTON, Alberta -- — Noah Hanifin had two goals and an assist and the Calgary Flames beat the Edmonton Oilers 6-3 on Saturday for their third straight victory.

Nazeem Kadri, Martin Pospisil, Dryden Hunt and Blake Coleman also scored and Dan Vladar made 32 saves to help Calgary beat Edmonton for the first time in three games this season.

“It was a great team effort tonight,” Hanifin said. “We needed to get a win against those guys, we’ve had a tough time playing them lately and I thought we had a really good start to the game.

“We played with a lot of emotion and passion, and that’s something you’ve got to do when you play a team with that much skill. I thought it was a really complete game for us.”

Zach Hyman scored twice and Mattias Janmark added a late goal for Edmonton. The Oilers have lost three in a row.

“I mean, it’s an 82-game season. Would you like to play perfect every 10-game stretch? Sure. Are you going to? Probably not,” Hyman said. “At the same time, we’re getting closer to the playoffs and we’re still fighting for a spot. We have to learn that we can’t just flip it on and think we’re going to win every game in the third period. You have to start on time.”

Kadri opened the scoring at 2:02 of the first period on the first shot of the game. He poked the puck past goalie Stuart Skinner for his 21st of the season.

Pospisil and Hanifin scored in the period to make it 3-0. Hyman rallied the Oilers, scoring his 36th of the season on a power play late in the first, then adding his career-high 37th early in the second.

Hunt and Hanifin countered with goals in the second. In the third, Edmonton pulled Skinner for an extra attacker with more than seven minutes left, and Coleman scored his 23rd on a long shot into the empty net.

“It’s the consistency we’d like to see,” Flames coach Ryan Huska said. “We’ve been fighting it, and if there’s a knock on us it’s been our inability to put streaks together and our inability to stop streaks.”

Flames top Kings 4-2 to stay hot with fourth consecutive victory

Updated: Feb 28, 2024, 02:10 am

CALGARY, Alberta -- — Yegor Sharangovich scored the go-ahead goal at 12:09 of the third period as the Calgary Flames earned their fourth straight win, 4-2, over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night.

Andrew Mangiapane, Blake Coleman and Mikael Backlund, into an empty net, also scored for Calgary, while Chris Tanev chipped in a pair of assists. The Flames remain five points back of Nashville for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

Jacob Markstrom had 21 stops and an assist.

Sharangovich hadn’t scored a goal in 11 games before Tuesday.

“It’s been a long time that I can’t score, but our line always has enough chances to score and finally we find a way,” Sharangovich said.

Phillip Danault and Kevin Fiala provided the offense for Los Angeles, which has dropped the first two of its three-game Western Canada road trip. The Kings are tied in points with Nashville, but hold down the first wild-card spot.

Making his first start in four games, former Flame Cam Talbot had 33 saves for the Kings.

“They came out hard, hungry. They were better than us the first couple of minutes and it carried on to the game,” said Kings right-winger Quinton Byfield. “It’s tough when you start behind like that, but those are just games we’ve got to win.”

On the go-ahead score, Sharangovich took a pass from Dryden Hunt, strode over the Los Angeles blue line and ripped a shot inside the goalpost on Talbot’s glove side.

Sharangovich was shifted from right-wing to center after Elias Lindholm was dealt to the Vancouver Canucks during the NHL All-Star break.

“It’s a little bit different role because you’re really responsible for the D-zone,” said Sharangovich. “It’s taken a little bit of time, but in the offensive zone doesn’t change. We’ve had a lot of chances and finally the puck has gone in.”

Flames head coach Ryan Huska says Sharangovich has adjusted nicely.

“He’s done a really good job for us since we’ve asked him to play in the middle of the ice,” said Huska. “He’s been responsible defensively, and that line is developing a little bit of chemistry, … to see him score tonight the way he did was a big moment for our team, for sure, but I know it will allow him to sleep a little better tonight as well.”

Scoreless through the first half of the game, the Kings opened the scoring at 12:08 of the second period when Danault picked the top corner with a slap shot from 40 feet out.

The lead was short-lived, however, with Calgary responding 48 seconds later.

Noah Hanifin’s long pass found Mangiapane behind the Kings defense and on the breakaway, he fooled Talbot with a backhand-to-forehand deke that left him with an empty net.

Continuing the sudden rapid-fire scoring barrage, 56 seconds after that, the Flames took their first lead with Coleman knocking in a Jonathan Huberdeau rebound at 13:52.

Fiala evened the scored with 1:06 remaining in the middle frame, backhanding in a rebound after Markstrom could not control Anze Kopitar’s initial shot.

With Los Angeles playing its second game in as many nights, Calgary started strong. The Flames outshot the Kings 10-3 in the opening 20 minutes, but the game remained scoreless thanks to a Los Angeles penalty kill that bent, but didn’t break.

With his assist on Mangiapane’s goal, Markstrom has five assists on the season. No other NHL goalie has more than two.

Sharangovich scores twice as Flames rally to beat Penguins 4-3

Updated: Mar 3, 2024, 03:02 am

CALGARY, Alberta -- — Yegor Sharangovich scored twice, including the tiebreaking goal with 50 seconds left, and the Calgary Flames rallied from two goals down in the third period to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 on Saturday night.

“We beat ourselves. In a number of different ways,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. “We had complete control of the game. Played a really good game up until that point and we just made some egregious mistakes and it’s hard to recover.”

Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman also scored for Calgary, which has won a season-high five straight games. Jacob Markstrom stopped 27 shots and the Flames moved five points behind Los Angeles for the second Western Conference wild card.

“We’ve got a bunch of guys in here that refuse to go down (without) swinging and that’s a great mentality to have,” Kadri said. “Everybody understands we’re still in the hunt. We’re giving ourselves every opportunity possible. Even if there’s a sliver of hope, we’ll take that and we’ll run with it.”

Jonathan Gruden got his first NHL goal, and Lars Eller and Jeff Carter also scored for Pittsburgh. Tristan Jarry made 16 saves.

With Tampa Bay's win earlier in the night, the Penguins fell 10 points behind the Lightning for the second Eastern Conference wild card — though Pittsburgh has five games in hand.

“We have no choice — we have to keep fighting,” left wing Drew O’Connor said. “It’s a tough way to end that game. We know how important each game is, and we need a lot of them right now. To lose that one when we’re in control hurts a lot, but we have another one tomorrow we have to get ready for.”

Trailing 3-1 midway through the third and being outshot by a considerable margin, Calgary suddenly woke up with two goals 32 seconds apart to tie it.

Kadri picked up the puck inside his own blue line and slipped it through Noel Acciari's skates as he carried up ice, then made a slick move to dangle past Kris Letang before pulling the puck all the way across the crease and burying it on Jarry at 10:09.

“It’s a SportsCenter Top 10 goal and it’s something that electrified the building and the crowd," Coleman said. "That goal just blew the roof off.”

With the crowd still buzzing, Coleman tied it 3-all, one-timing Andrew Mangiapane’s centering pass for his team-leading 25th goal.

The go-ahead goal in the final minute came when Mikael Backlund stripped the puck from Letang along the sideboards and then dropped a pass to Sharangovich, who picked the top corner for his 23rd — one off his career high.

“(Sharangovich) was pressuring the one D and I was hoping he was going to give it to the other D and I just jumped him,” Backlund said. “I didn’t know who I actually passed it to, I just saw two red guys behind me and I dropped it and a very nice finish.”

Gruden got the Penguins on the scoreboard first as he chased down a puck near the corner and flung a shot from a sharp angle that squeaked inside the near post on Markstrom with 3:18 left in the first period. The first NHL goal for the 23-year-old Gruden came in his ninth career game — sixth this season. He was called up from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL on Friday.

Eller had a power-play goal with 34 seconds left in the first to make it 2-0.

Sharangovich got the Flames on the board at 3:37 of the second when he poked a loose puck past a flat-footed Letang and got in alone, whipping a low shot through Jarry’s pads.

Pittsburgh restored its two-goal cushion 2:51 into the third on Carter’s deflection of Ryan Graves’ point shot.

“Everybody’s really happy for Kipper and his family and it’s really cool to see how much support he received tonight and how much he meant to the city," Coleman said. "And to honor him with a win is special.”

McCann leads Kraken to 4-2 win over Flames for third victory in four games

Updated: Mar 5, 2024, 02:54 am

CALGARY, Alberta -- — Jared McCann had a goal and an assist to help the Seattle Kraken beat the Calgary Flames 4-2 on Monday night for their third win in four games.

Yanni Gourde, Oliver Bjorkstrand, and Adam Larsson also scored for Seattle, which is 6-2-1 in its last nine. Philipp Grubauer stopped 35 shots as the Kraken pulled even with the Flames in the Western Conference playoff chase, seven points back of idle Nashville for the second wild card.

It was the 100th win in franchise history for Seattle in 225 games, which ties St. Louis for the third-fastest expansion team to reach that milestone. The only teams that did it faster were Vegas (173 games) and Florida (223 games).

“For our team right now, we’re in the fight here. The most important win is going to become 101,” said McCann. “That’s not to take anything away from that milestone because I hope everybody in the organization that’s worked extremely hard to make that happen feels their contributions and feels a lot of pride in it.”

Andrei Kuzmenko scored twice for Calgary, which snapped a five-game winning streak. Jacob Markstrom finished with 26 saves.

Kuzmenko has 13 goals on the season and five in 10 games since being acquired from Vancouver on Jan. 31 as part of the trade that sent Elias Lindholm to the Canucks.

After going more than two months between starts, missing a bulk of that due to a lower-body injury, Grubauer has been excellent since his return to the crease on Feb. 13, going 5-1-0 with a .943 save percentage.

“Grubby’s been good,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. “Just the calmness that the provides. You can add up the big saves tonight at the right time.”

With Seattle up 3-1 after Larsson’s goal 21 seconds into the third period, Calgary cut the deficit in half on Kuzmenko’s second of the night at 7:46.

The Flames then got consecutive power plays in an attempt to pull even. However, after failing to score on the first, it was the Kraken that scored on the second.

McCann stripped the puck from Calgary's Rasmus Andersson, raced in on Markstrom, and scored short-handed for his team-leading 26th goal with 7:31 remaining.

“I was pretty gassed so I just tried to get the shot off quick,” said McCann. “I like to go low blocker but decided to change it up at the last second. He’s a big goalie, so I was able to find a spot.”

Calgary coach Ryan Huska didn’t blame Andersson, implying the pass back to him by Andrew Mangiapane might have been to blame.

“I thought Raz got put in a tough spot up top,” Huska said. “Now he’s flat-footed with pressure coming out at him.”

Less than a minute later, Calgary rookie Martin Pospisil was given a major and a game misconduct for drilling Seattle defenseman Vince Dunn into the end boards from behind. Visibly shaken up but leaving the ice on his own, Dunn went to the dressing room and didn’t return.

“Garbage,” Hakstol said when asked about the hit. “But not really a whole lot different than the first hit six or seven seconds into the game. You run around like that you probably need to answer when somebody comes to you man to man and that didn’t happen either.”

After a listless first period in which Calgary fell behind 1-0, the Flames were better in the second period, tying it at 7:50 on a crafty effort from Kuzmenko on the power play. The 28-year-old Russian faked going behind the net, prompting Grubauer to look over his other shoulder, only to cut back and jam it inside the near post for his 100th career NHL point.

Seattle reclaimed the lead less than five minutes later when poor defensive coverage by Oliver Kylington left Bjorkstrand open in the slot and he one-timed McCann’s centering pass behind Markstrom. Bjorkstrand’s third goal in the last four games gave him 16 on the season.

Seattle was the better team by a wide margin in the opening 20 minutes, outshooting the home side 11-2 and scoring the only goal.

At 4:04, Dunn’s point shot hit a couple of players in front where it was corralled by Gourde and whipped behind Markstrom for his eighth.

Ok, it's a major and game misconduct for boarding, that's legit, but why the hell is Dunn staying there, three feet from the boards, almost waiting to be dangerously hit. As a Dman in such position, you have to protect yourself and not put yourself into a vulnerable position. That's exactly what Dunn did.

Looked more like a hit to his side not a hit from behind...looked like a hit right at the arms and armpit...I agree with the no call on the play...

Sharky Attack!

Sharangovich scored twice and added two assists in Calgary's 6-3 win in Tampa

ByChris Wahl

The Florida coast is known for having shark-infested waters.

At Amalie Arena Thursday night, Sharky ran rampant, helping the Flames take a bite out of the Lightning.

Yegor Sharangovich recorded the first four-point game of his career, scoring twice and adding two assists as part of a 6-3 victory.

Dryden Hunt, Jakob Pelletier, Blake Coleman and Andrew Mangiapane also scored for the Flames, who picked up their seventh win in their last eight road games.

Calgary opened the scoring just shy of the 12-minute mark, capping off an eventful shift for Dryden Hunt.

In his defensive zone, Hunt had to somersault over top of a sliding teammate, a tumble that drew ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ from the crowd.

Undaunted, Hunt silenced the Tampa faithful moments later at the other end of the ice, when Sharangovich fed him a puck from behind the net to a low slot, enabling Hunt to cash in with his second goal of the season.

Conor Sheary tied things up just over a minute and a half later, nudging a back-door feed past Markstrom’s right pad.

The Flames held a 7-6 edge in shots through period one.

Calgary broke the game open in the second period, scoring three goals in a span of 3:14.

The go-ahead marker came 6:11 into the middle stanza, thanks in part to a bit of individual brilliance from Jonathan Huberdeau.

He gloved a puck first to his feet, then to his stick, then from the corner spun and fired a no-look, behind-the-back pass that zipped through the crease onto the tape of Sharangovich, who coolly deposited it into the roof of the net for his 24th of the campaign.

When asked post-game, Sharangovich admitted he was a bit surprised to see the puck land on his stick.

"When Jonny have puck, you just need (to be) open," he said. "I was surprised to see the puck go through, yeah, but really nice pass by him"

Sharangovich scored again on his next shift, wiring a one-timer into the top corner from the high slot after Matt Coronato did some great work along the wall to strip a Tampa Bay defender of the disc.

Pelletier then celebrated his birthday in style less than a minute later, roofing a puck from just outside the blue paint following an Andrei Kuzmenko net drive from the left corner.

Anthony Cirelli drew the hosts back to within two before the period was through.

Markstrom stopped five shots in the middle frame, his best save coming off a clear-cut opportunity from Nick Perbix - who glided down the right wing unabated, only to have his effort kicked away by the Flames netminder’s left pad.

The third period was controlled by Calgary.

Blake Coleman tipped home his team-leading 26th goal of the season to make the scored 5-2, then Mangiapane added salt with an empty-net marker at the 12:17 mark.

Mikey Eyssimont rounded out the scoring for the hosts with 5:25 to play.

Sharangovich was the star of the night, and as part of his memorable evening, he set a new personal best by counting his 25th goal of the campaign, all while earning the praise of his head coach.

“I thought he was excellent tonight - he and his linemates," Ryan Huska commented post-game. "I thought they had a really good night for us. It took him a little while to feel comfortable in the middle of the ice and I don’t blame him.

"We asked him to do a tough thing at this time of the year but I think he’s handled it really well; I think he’s now in a position where he feels good at both ends of the ice and we’re starting to see the offence come from him.”

Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar each collected two assists for Calgary, while newcomer Joel Hanley picked up a helper in his Flames debut.

Markstrom made 18 saves to secure the victory in goal.

The Lineup:

Tarasenko’s 2 goals, assist spark Panthers past Flames

Newly acquired forward gets 1st 3 points with Florida, which has won 7 of 8

ByGeorge Richards
NHL.com Independent Correspondent

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Vladimir Tarasenko got his first three points with the Florida Panthers, helping them defeat the Calgary Flames 5-1 at Amerant Bank Arena on Saturday.

Playing his second game since being acquired from the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday, the forward had two goals and an assist for Florida (44-17-4), which has won seven of its past eight games and 17 of 20. Anthony Stolarz made 34 saves.

“I am not going to lie. It is nice and kind of a relief,” Tarasenko said of getting on the score sheet after finishing with two shots on goal in his debut Thursday, a 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

“It is to kind of understand your linemates and how the team plays a little bit more. I felt more comfortable as the game went on."

Yegor Sharangovich scored a power-play goal, and Jacob Markstrom made 26 saves for Calgary (31-27-5), which had won six of seven.

The Panthers outscored the Flames 4-1 in the second period.

“That is one of the better teams, if not the best team, right now in the League,” Calgary coach Ryan Huska said of Florida. “We liked our first period, but we gave one up early in the second and that allowed their transition game [to get] going a little more than we would have liked.”

Tarasenko put the Panthers ahead 1-0 just 23 seconds into the second, intercepting a clearing pass from Jonathan Huberdeau deep in the zone and shooting past Markstrom.

Sharangovich tied it 1-1 at 5:51 on the rebound of a Nazem Kadri shot at the right side of the net.

Florida took a 2-1 lead at 6:19 when Aleksander Barkov took a backhand, cross-ice feed from Sam Reinhart in the right circle and scored with a one-timer.

“It was our second period. We spoke in the room and said, ‘We need to play a little harder,’” said Barkov, the Panthers captain. “We got away from playing hard the past couple of games, but we started back in the second period and we got a good win.”

Sam Bennett pushed it to 3-1 at 13:12, deflecting a point shot from Gustav Forsling.

Tarasenko made it 4-1 at 14:55 with the teams at 4-on-4. His wrist shot hit Markstrom in the pad and got through.

“There is almost no risk in their game for highly skilled offensive players,” Maurice said of the line Tarasenko, Barkov and Reinhart. “They were right on both sides of the puck, and that is exciting for us.”

The Panthers extended the lead to 5-1 with a short-handed goal at 4:33 of the third period. After Eetu Luostarinen forced a turnover, Kevin Stenlund finished on the rush with a slick forehand-to-backhand move.

“We turned the puck over too much, and they are a highly skilled team and took over on transition,” Flames forward Mikael Backlund said. “We got away from our game in the second, started giving pucks away.”

Barkov had a goal overturned at 17:06 after Calgary challenged for offside.

The Panthers played much of the game without defenseman Aaron Ekblad, who left in the first period with a lower-body injury after colliding with Tarasenko.

Forward Evan Rodrigues also left the game with a lower-body injury late in the second period after blocking a shot.

Florida coach Paul Maurice said both players would be evaluated on Sunday and that “we will have a really good idea” then.

When pressed about Ekblad, Maurice smiled.

“He’s going to be OK,” Maurice said. “I don’t know when he is coming back, it could be practice Monday or maybe a little longer.”

Aho has 3 points, Hurricanes score 7 in win against Flames

Svechnikov, Teravainen each gets goal, 2 assists for Carolina, which has won 5 of 6

ByKurt Dusterberg
NHL.com Independent Correspondent

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov and Teuvo Teravainen each had a goal and two assists for the Carolina Hurricanes in a 7-2 win against the Calgary Flames at PNC Arena on Sunday.

Jalen Chatfield and Seth Jarvis each had a goal and an assist, and Frederik Andersen made 18 saves for the Hurricanes (39-19-6), who have won three in a row and five of their past six.

“In the first period, [Aho] made a few nice plays,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “That’s the whole key. When you can get out front, the other team has to do things a little differently.

That’s why you see those odd-man rushes. We were able to capitalize on those. That’s where the game was won.”

Dryden Hunt and Yegor Sharangovich scored for the Flames (31-28-5), who have lost three of their past four. Dan Vladar made 33 saves.

“It was one of those games you’re not going to take a lot from,” Calgary coach Ryan Huska said. “That wasn’t good. The skating wasn’t good, game plan wasn’t good. It was everything.”

Jordan Martinook gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead at 6:30 of the first period. He skated in on a rush and dropped a pass to Aho, who faked a slap shot before finding Martinook in the slot for a one-timer.

Aho made it 2-0 at 17:43. After Brayden Pachal fumbled the puck in Calgary's zone, Teravainen passed back and forth with Aho twice before Aho scored on a one-timer from the left hash marks.

“You feel bad for [Vladar],” Flames forward Blake Coleman said. "He hasn’t been in the net much lately, and he gets hung out to dry all night long. We just got outplayed, outcompeted, everything. Just an awful effort all around.”

Chatfield scored 17 seconds into the second period to make it 3-0, and Svechnikov finished off a give-and-go with Aho on a 2-on-1 to extend the lead to 4-0 at 1:15.

“We just wanted to keep rolling and playing our game,” Svechnikov said. “We just feel so much confidence. We were just kind of controlling the game.”

Hunt made it 4-1 at 4:11, one-timing a saucer pass from Oliver Kylington on a 2-on-1.

Brent Burns pushed it to 5-1 at 13:55 when he one-timed a short pass from Jaccob Slavin at the left point.

Jarvis made it 6-1 at 19:26 off a pass from Chatfield.

Sharangovich cut it to 6-2 at 4:54 of the third period, shooting into an open net after Andersen fanned on a clearing attempt at the bottom of the right circle.

Teravainen made it 7-2 at 17:14, chipping the puck over Vladar out of midair after a pass from Jesperi Kotkaniemi went off his skate.

Each team was playing the second of a back-to-back. The Hurricanes defeated the New Jersey Devils 4-2 on Saturday, and the Flames lost 5-1 at the Florida Panthers.

“Overall, solid game,” Brind’Amour said. “They had it back-to-back, too. They were a little sluggish, I think, if you ask them.”

Shorthanded Flames fall 6-2 to visiting Avalanche

ByTy Pilson
@typilson CalgaryFlames.com

Undermanned, the Flames battled to the end but fell 6-2 to the visiting Avalanche Tuesday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Starting netminder Jacob Markstrom was ruled out for the tilt earlier Tuesday afternoon, Dustin Wolf called up from the Wranglers and he backed up Dan Vladar to start the tilt.

Prior to puck drop, it was announced Andrew Mangiapane would not play due to illness and following warmup, Andrei Kuzmenko - who took part in the pregame skate - also was sidelined with an upper-body injury.

So, the Flames iced 11 forwards and seven blueliners - including the newly acquired Nikita Okhotiuk, who made his Flames debut - and had a 2-1 lead after the first period but the visitors would score five in the middle stanza en route to their victory.

Vladar made 29 saves on 35 shots in his 40 minutes of play, Wolf coming in to play the third and stopping all three shots he faced.

The Flames had a 8-3 edge in shots in the final frame but couldn't get any more past Colorado starter Justus Annunen, who finished the evening with 25 saves.

Newcomer Daniil Miromanov scored his first as a Flames, and Walker Duehr also tallied for Calgary.

Mikko Rantanen scored just 2:05 into the game with Martin Pospisil in the box for a slash after a post-whistle scrum. Valeri Nichushkin getting a rebound on the doorstep and passing it cross-crease to Rantanen to tap in.

But the Flames answered back 1:19 later when Miromanov stepped into a howitzer by the blueline, his laser fidning twine just under the bar on the blocker side of Annunen.

Calgary made it 2-1 at 6:46 with just their third shot of the game, Jonathan Huberdeau trying to feed Yegor Sharangovich, Sam Girard blocking the attempt but Duehr right there as the puck dropped near him and he put a backhand farside for his second of the season.

The visitors outshot the Flames 19-9 in the first period, but Calgary held the 2-1 lead after 20 minutes thanks to Vladar’s play.

The Avs scored three times in just over three minutes early in the second period, Josh Manson starting the run before Nathan MacKinnon and Nichushkin both tallied.

Casey Mittelstadt would score at 14:10, with Rantanen rounding out the five-goal frame with a tough-angle tally with 46 ticks left in the second.

The Lineup:

The 11 Flames forwards and seven blueliners for the tilt:

Forwards

Jakob Pelletier - Nazem Kadri - Martin Pospisil

Dryden Hunt - Mikael Backlund - Blake Coleman

Walker Duehr - Kevin Rooney - Matthew Coronato

Jonathan Huberdeau - Yegor Sharangovich

Defence

Oliver Kylington - Rasmus Andersson

MacKenzie Weegar - Daniil Miromanov

Joel Hanley - Brayden Pachal

Nikita Okhotiuk

Goaltenders

Dan Vladar - starter

Dustin Wolf
