Gallagher to have phone hearing for actions in Canadiens game

Forward facing discipline for illegal check to head against Islanders defenseman Pelech

ByNHL.com

Brendan Gallagher will have a phone hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Friday.

The Montreal Canadiens forward is facing discipline for an illegal check to the head against New York Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech on Thursday.

The incident occurred at 11:52 of the third period of the Canadiens' 4-3 win at Bell Centre in Montreal. Gallagher’s elbow made contact with Pelech's head moments after the latter made a pass in the neutral zone.

Gallagher was assessed a five-minute match penalty. Pelech left the game and did not return.

The penalty was upheld upon an official's video review.

The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: illegal check to the head. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review.

Open ice late hit, upward motion, elbow used to hit Pelech, head as the first contact point. This one was checks almost every checkbox. To put a bit of context, this hit occured after Clutterbuck made a huge but legal hit on Harvey-Pinard shortly before. This is exactly what the League is """""trying""""" to get rid of.

Should be four games at least but we know it won't be more than five because Gallagher won't have a personal hearing.

Edit: He got five games. Seems legit.

NHL suspends Canadiens' Gallagher 5 games for illegal check

NEW YORK -- Montreal Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher has been suspended five games for an illegal check to the head of New York Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech.

The NHL announced the suspension Friday after a disciplinary phone hearing with Gallagher, who was given a match penalty and ejected for hitting Pelech in the head with his right elbow midway through the third period of the teams' game Thursday night. Pelech did not return.

In videos produced in English and French announcing the suspension, the league's department of player safety said Gallagher delivered direct and forceful contact to Pelech's head when he could have avoided doing so.

Gallagher, 34, and now in his 12th season, had been fined once before in his career and not suspended before.

Not considered a repeat offender under the collective bargaining agreement, he'll forfeit $169,271 in salary and miss games at Pittsburgh and Washington and against Dallas, St. Louis and Anaheim sandwiched around the All-Star break. Gallagher is eligible to return Feb. 15 at the New York Rangers.
