idahophilly
... give up your average 2.5 million (roughly league average but obviously could be as high a 7+ million) salary for the young players coming up through the league (college/AHL ect...)?I'm sure different players have different motivations for standing firm on the negotiations. But it got me to thinking, do the young players and prospects realize/care what the older or high salary players are giving up? Now, I know a Giroux situation is allot different than a Timonen situation. Giroux is still very young and hasn't even cashed in on his big payday yet. But Kimmo is some 6 million and possibly losing his last NHL season. Now, please understand. I'm not saying all the players (or even close to a majority) are so noble that they are fighting for the "kids" but in a way they are, whether it's their motivation or not.The Giroux and Voracek's of the world are surely fighting for their future earnings when it comes to the HRR issues. Timo isn't though. Briere probably doesn't have as much skin in the game as a Simmonds does. But besides the HRR, their is the fight over entry level contracts (ELC's) and the escrow/payments to keep teams from folding which is by default about the number of jobs available to the NHLPA.Let's face it, the Sedins, Giroux, Crosby and even the Hartnells of the world don't have to worry about loosing their jobs if there was contraction and they certainly don't have to worry about ELC's. But never the less they are fighting for the Reads, Schenn's, Coots of the world. They are fighting those battles for the Wellwoods and Rinaldos of the world to not lose their jobs because on league contraction, even if it's not apparent to them at first glance.Well, I doubt it's as noble as it might sound but the battle is being waged anyway.I wonder if those prospects get it, much less care? I hope they do because everyone from the owners to the fans and workers are paying a very high price...

sarsippius
This league, the caretakers of my favorite sport at its highest level of annual competition, is a ******* joke. Like an article posted here a couple weeks ago stated, 4 work stoppages in 20 years is a sign of HORRIBLE management in any industry. Who the Hell grows a league and a sport by shutting it down every time the employees don't bow down and accept dictated terms of employment?
