Free Agent Player Bidding System

Okay I know I mentioned this briefly in the other thread, but what would be so wrong with having a bidding system for players? Do players really have much choice in where they play anyway?

Think of it this way: You don't control who drafts you. Your career starts SOMEWHERE, and chances are it's not New York, LA, or Miami. You would never play for a team like the Rangers unless they were INTERESTED in having you. You either need to get traded there or sign a free agent contract to go there. If your team trades you somewhere else, what then? Do you quit playing hockey because you got traded to the Canucks instead of the Rangers like you wanted? (I don't get it.)

I think the league needs to ban no-movement and restricted movement clauses in contracts. No more "list of teams" that a player is willing to go to. The NHL needs to be more like the military. When you get drafted, THEY tell you where to go. You get DEPLOYED to a particular city and that's where you play. No questions asked. The fans are your customers and they're paying your salary. If you don't like it, you can find another job. The world needs plenty of home care workers! Go wipe bums for a living if it hurts so much to play hockey in Winnipeg or Columbus for millions of dollars. (I mean seriously.)  Somebody needs to reign in the players and remind them who's in charge. (ie: The FANS.)

A player bidding system would work as follows:

  • Highest bid wins. Period.

So if player X's contract is expiring, interested teams (with available cap space) will start bidding on that player by making contract offers. The highest valued contract wins. If the Jets offer $9 mil per season for 2 years and the Rangers offer $8.5 mil per season for 2 years, congrats..... you're off to Winnipeg!

The only question is how to handle contracts of varying lengths.....  🤔
