Realistically, does that 2nd rounder have a chance to help the team in the next 5 years ?

I think this is the math that's being calculated as we speak.

Seeler helps to create culture and can play a little.

I can see the point of those who think a 2nd is beyond fair value based on league history, a 2nd for a 5-7D  is "good value". Is it good value to the Flyers though?

I think ditching either one for less than what Jonesy and Danny think is fair is not worth it. Seeler especially, is cheap, he'll gladly become the 7th if there are better guys for the first 6, and he'll do whatever to help the team. That's his jam, I value it.

Walker has been a set him and forget him 2nd pair guy. He's a smart player . Those guys don't grow on trees, is there a second pair set him and forget him guy in the system? does a 2nd pick grow into a valued piece of the team or a top 4 guy?

I don't know man. I'm glad it's not my job to make these value determinations.

I can see all sides of the argument.

I think if the offer for either isn't what will help the team, then keeping them until later for a sign and trade or just as a few years bridge to let young guys develop isn't the worst thing to happen.

I cannot argue against the team needing more high-end skill.

I see more than a few teams drafting top 5 and never making it count. The team is too depleted of players who've won or have been moderately successful pros and it's a lord of the flies situation.... How is the value determined as to which is more of a priority?

    It's not easy.

I see your point in the second round pick scenario, and Seeler and Walker have been great for us,  but if we add a first and second for Walker and Seeler, that’s two free picks for guys that we basically got for nothing. Now we have three first rounders and two or three seconds in this draft and maybe another first for Laughton. That’s a lot of ammo to trade up in this draft and really jumpstart the rebuild. Attard can fill Steelers physical role and Andrae can eventually provide what Walker gave us. We may take a step back for a bit, but in the end we will be better off.Bonk is putting up huge numbers, but may take another year.

The thing that worries me is this…. If you were in the NHL, 30 years old, having the best year of your career by a mile and you never had a big payday, as much as you love your team and the guys …are you taking a two year deal for a modest increase, or are you going to the team dumb enough to offer you 3 million for four years? I’d be chasing the money,it’s his last chance to set himself up for retirement. If your the Flyers and in a rebuild, do you pay Seeler 3 million for four years? Maybe if Risto was gone, but it seems lots of teams are asking for Seeler and Walker in a package and Briere wants a first and second for both.

    I hope he gets pushed to a #7.  I think there's a difference.

I thought Cam York played pretty well offensively today.  I thought he was pretty good in his zone too. If some of these young guys with upside can break into the lineup because they're better and this version of Seeler becomes your #7... **** I'll take that all day.  I do like what he brings to the table and I do respect his determination.  There are worse things than having that guy in the organization.

like I said in the Pens game thread, this group has made me feel some pride about being a Flyers fan again and I'm good with it. Nick Seeler and his **** all do whatever is asked attitude is part of the reason. He's exhibit A for fighting for every inch of everything.

His grit and determination are definitely reminiscent of old school Flyers hockey, but one reason we haven’t won a cup in 50 years is we've always been the team with grit and determination and too little high end talent. If someone is offering a second round pick, then I’d trade him, if not then keep him for the playoff run.

I just started the thread for #60 and TB.  Our Captain has not had a good stretch of late:

    https://www.crossingbroad.com/2024/02/has-the-flyers-unexpected-success-come-at-the-expense-of-sean-couturiers-game.html

The team is depleted on the D front.  Laughton and Foerster may be coming to life, but our PP is debilitating.  And we don't appear to have a competent backup goalie.  I hope we keep our heads above water.  But I'm fearful this is a squad that's played very well with few degrees of freedom (injuries, offensive talent) that's fraying at the edges.  These last three losses aren't embarrassments.  That said, they expose lack of depth across-the-board.

We knew this was coming, I just expected it alot sooner. On paper we are a bottom ten team. The Torts factor was the biggest reason we are having a good year. We also have two average dmen having career years and some young guys stepping up as well as TK. Now we lost Hart, we have Ersson tiring out, we have Coots hitting a wall , we lost Drysdale and once we trade the two dmen and Laughton we should drop back to where we really belong and get a better pick. I don't care about then playoffs,I'm more concerned about expediting the rebuild. Picking 20th isn't gonna do it.

That may very well happen ....simply put Gauthier no longer wanted to be a part of the Flyers organization.  Would rather cut out a potential cancer now then deal with it 5 years from now.   It is very disappointing this happened.   I get it .... :(

The most disappointing part is, our first big piece of the supposed rebuild decides he doesn't want to play for the team. Now it looks like we won't be picking anywhere near #5 anytime soon. Hopefully Michkov works out but the anxiety of waiting 2 more years is a killer.

I'm sure Danny did his due diligence and shopped Gauthier to every GM in the League. The problem lies in the old boys GM network...these guys all talk, and with each call he exposes his position of weakness.

Thus, opposing GMs smell blood in the water and the offers go down, despite the obvious elite skill of the player being shopped. Throw in how unprofessional Gauthier and his reps looked giving the Flyers the cold shoulder, this could have given other GMs pause for thought also.

In the end, Danny did his best from an obvious position of weakness. He simply had to accept a few warts for a top 10 prospect....in this case, the warts include size and injury concerns.

Yes, I agree. He did the best under the circumstances. I just have a feeling that Gauthier is gonna be game changer and Drysdale is gonna be like Ghost.

I think this weekend should be instrumental toward taking advantage of the available assets.

I shut Drysdale down. Let him heal, start fresh in 2024/25. I trade all the UFA defensemen.

I healthy scratch Cam Atkinson for the rest of the season.

I give extended looks to Ginning, for you @BobbyClarkeFan16 Attard and Andrae.

If someone wants to get crazy to acquire Scott Laughton, then okay. I know Jonesy in particular loves him and stated it would need to be an overpay because he feels indebted to Scott's leadership the last two years.

Should the Kuch-show come to town and light the boys up then it's time to Sell Mortimer, SELL!

For God Sakes, where in the hell is Beaks!!

The guy who leads the league in shot-blocking - and has all year - is hardly a "dime a dozen" player. Giving him away for a 3R would prove incompetence. Thankfully Jones and Briere aren't incompetent.

The thing that worries me is, it took him until 30 to become this defenseman we see. I’m not sold, I can easily see him returning back from a second pair guy to a #7. I would trade him if we can get a second rounder or good prospect. If they only offer third, then keep him for a playoff run I would only re-sign him for a reasonable deal, but he’s thirty he had a career year and will be looking for that big pay day with long term security.

    1) This game has done nothing to subside my Drysdale is injury prone fears. That was not a dirty or savage it...I fear the shoulder is gonna be a problem.

This game however does feel like a changing of the guard. The old Flyers would have laid down and died at 4-2. Should they win...a nice gutsy comeback....and one that would not have happened without Fonzies leadership and helping them believe in themselves.

Any contender not in on Laughton for a 1st better check out this game tape. He makes the players around him better and is a LOAD on the pk! You NEED elite special teams to win the Cup!!

Drysdale is a lot like some of our current and past young players,  he has missed a lot of games due to injury and he is behind in his development. He has already had two major injuries including a torn labrum, which kept him out a full season. Not sure if it was the same shoulder that was injured tonight. I just hope he isn’t a snake bitten player who’s made of peanut brittle and always gets hurt. We already had  more than our share…Lindros, Bourdon, Morin, Patrick,Allison and O’Brien. I know the Flyers were limited in the teams they could trade with, but considering Patrick and all the rest ,I’d be wary of trading for a guys who’s had two major injuries right off the bat. It seems that guys who get injured early on are always injured down the line.

I know I was just grumpy after Petersen gave up that softy... Of course you're right over 30 is the beginning of the end. But thinking of Konecny specifically I just don't see a decline in the next 3, 4 even 5 years.

Not really. Most NHLers don't have back surgery in their careers let alone 2 back-to-back no pun intended. But if you mean the general decline...sure.

We signed Coots to a big contract and then he started to break down and now he will continue to decline, he played a lot of tough minutes from 18-29..

Washed up at 30? No, of course not...but it in and around the sweet spot where stats begin to decline and a long term deal signed 4 years ago starts to swing towards burden and out of the prime years. Every player is different, some kick butt well into 33-34 ish...and unicorns like Pavalski exist...but on average...30-31 is where things go South.

    Coots is a prime example.

Petersen has made a couple nice saves. The first 2 - a wide-open Crosby and a Rust perfect deflection - weren't soft goals by any stretch of the imagination. The PP goal - right or wrong I always cut goalies slack when their team is down a man.

The 4th goal was ... not good. PP or no PP that goal was Ugly. I would say "deflating" but the Flyers don't seem to deflate this season. But now they need 3 in a row or at least 2.

edit: make that 2 in a row or at least 1 more... Couturier with the clean win and Sanheim kaboom!

oh lord and the very next shift...Sanheim takes a penalty ... kind of a lame call but interference no doubt. Petersen can redeem himself a bit if he can shut the door on this PP...

Wow yes ANOTHER SHORTY!!!! Who else Scott Laughton...holy crap tie game just like that!

    Laughton's value is skyrocketing

Your statement would make sense if the Penguins wanted to make the playoffs.  For some reason they rather play golf after game 82!

You can say that about a lot of NHL teams. There are so many teams with much more talent than the Flyers who are totally underperforming this year. On paper we are a bottom ten team. We have Torts who gets the most out of the least and we have a bunch of other teams underachieving. That’s the only reason we are in a playoff spot. You also have  two defensemen who basically did nothing for their entire careers, that are having breakout seasons in their UFA contract years. Don’t be fooled this team has a long way to go in the rebuild.

They could use a win alright after a tough beat yesterday, though if they'd hit the net more often it might not be so tough.

The Pens have been off for 2 days - Flyers on a back-to-back. More of a "must win" for the Pens I guess. The Flyers generally play well in Pittsburgh - should be a good one...!

I sense a loss coming. You had an emotional 2-1 loss to the Rangers at home, now your on the road ,back to back games against a rested team that needs the win alot more than the Flyers do.

and losing in 6 in the Final - on a shot that gets stopped 99% of the time by 99% of NHL goalies - even after earning a place in history beating Boston - somehow it was fitting. Maybe the worst sting Flyers' fans ever had - right up there with Stickle.

A "wing and a prayer" can take a team far but I guess not all the way. The Kings had Quick - which obviously made all the difference.

The weakest Cup winning goal in NHL history. I was at the game, nobody knew the puck went in but Kane.

The Flyers are in year 48 of trying to build a winner. I think it's about time they tried it without the just make the playoffs and anything can happen formula.

Having a crapload of draft picks give us a better chance of landing a gem after the 1st round.

There is also the Torts factor, this team is nowhere near as talented as their record shows. Eventually they will take a huge step back to their true talent level. I'm hoping right after we unload Laughton and Walker.

    Dear Maine FF:

I am assuming this has something to do with the merger with Warner Brothers-Discovery. This is not the Cinemax we grew up with.  Somehow, they got sports content.

We used to call it Skinemax because of the nudity. Back in the day HBO was great when it had all the comedy specials, boxing, good movies, documentaries.and some good original programming, etc. Now it just shows lame third rate movies over and over. How many times can I watch the Karate Kid. There was also hockey games with no commercials. Cable is total crap,.not one movie channel is worth paying for. I had over 40 movie channels and literally never found anything worth watching.
