Clipped this from a Meltzer article.

    Quick Hits: June 20, 2019

    3) In terms of short-term salary cap considerations (i.e., specific to planning for 2019-20), here is how the Flyers' current offseason cap picture compares to last year's at the end of the preseason:

    * The combined $7.05 million in cap space that went last year to Jori Lehterä ($4.7 million) and Dale Weise ($2.35 million) have essentially be reallocated to Hayes, plus an additional $90K on his $7.14 million cap hit. While this does not take into account the long-term cap planning aspect of having signed Hayes to a seven-year deal, it's unquestionably a much better immediate-term use of similar amounts of cap space from last season to next.

    * The two-thirds salary cap relief the Flyers received for 2019-20 via the buyout of the final season of Andrew MacDonald's contract cancels out the added cap obligations for next season that came about via the Radko Gudas-for-Matt Niskanen trade; both in terms of the salary differential between Niskanen and Gudas as well as the roughly one-third of Gudas' 2019-20 salary. Essentially, the Flyers neither gained or lost any significant cap space for next season. For 2020-21, when the Gudas retention is off the books, the cap penalty for the MacDonald buyout will be largely but not completely offset.

    * The Flyers took on a $3.8 million cap obligation for 2019-20 via the acquisition of veteran defenseman Justin Braun (a potential unrestricted free agent next summer). However, goaltender Michal Neuvirth's $2.5 million cap hit will come off the books this summer and the Flyers also have impending UFA goaltenders Brian Elliott ($2.75 million) and Cam Talbot ($4.17 million). A portion of the goalies' 2018-19 salaries will be replaced on the Flyers' cap by a trade acquisition or free agent signing. A $3.8 million portion of the combined $9.42 cap hits (prorated, in Talbot's case) for the three goaltenders will offset the cap cost of the Braun acquisition. The remainder, whatever it will be, is available for other purposes. The Flyers also have a $2.1 million obligation to veteran defenseman David Schlemko (acquired in the Weise trade with Montreal) for next season; of which, roughly half can be buried in the AHL if he clears waivers and is assigned to the Phantoms.

    * Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher said over the weekend -- and reiterated on Wednesday -- that much of the team's still-open cap space would be used in resigning the team's five primary restricted free agents (Ivan Provorov, Travis Sanheim, Travis Konecny, Scott Laughton and Ryan Hartman). The GM said that he plans to meet with the respective players' agents in Vancouver over Draft weekend to get the ball rolling on negotiations but that nothing is imminent with any of the players

i know many are panicking, but I get good vibes from this management

He makes some loose use of those numbers. For example, while he mentions Schlemko later on, he neglects to bring up that the Weise money is already essentially eaten up by Schlemko, so his calculation there is off. And the long term cap planning aspect is what is worrying thise of us that have concerns.

Bill is also directly employed by the Flyers, so he will tend to paint everything in the most favorable light. I take him with a grain of salt anymore.

I'm not panicking, but I am also not a big fan of all three of these moves together. Two would probably be ok.

Sorry but i would be very disappointed with that.

No reason with the depth the Flyers have and a 30 goal scorer on one wing and a 80 point player on his other wing to not be able to expect a 65-75 point season....no reason....anything less and i will be pissed...just calling it like i see it. You don't have to agree but i think many here would expect that.

If anyone else here disagrees with me then please feel free to let me know. Thanks.

it will be hard for him to crack 60 points if he doesn't get first power play time. If he does, that means that they've managed to fix the second power play unit and he was a factor in it.

We'll have to agree to disagree and 2nd line center and a 1st round pick would have saved them 50 mill this upcoming season.

By that logic, you could have just rolled with Patrick and Frost and then you still haven't traded Ghost.

Poehling has way much more potential than a 3rd line RW...he will be a 2nd line center for sure.

And the draft picks could be a 1st rounder, 2nd or more it's just a guesstimate...it's more hypothetical at this point.

But Poehling is going to be a very good top 6 forward. Besides Ek has Ghost maybe to the Jets for Ehlers...

A potential 2rw is not a good starting point for a puck moving defenseman who has shown that he can be one of the elite power play quarterbacks in the league. This is exactly what I mean by losing a Ghost trade badly.

Not sure but i don't they happen straight up....it wouldn't make sense for them to make a hole at center going after Ghost.

Unless they plan on throwing a lot of money at Duchene....and then were would the Flyers put Kotkaniemi???

Pull off another trade??? When does it end. But then again ya neva know they traded for Weber...

    I was asking re: Poehling.

  6.

I hope he's right that they'd rather keep him, and of course, they should listen. I just worry that Fletcher not just loses a Ghost trade, but loses it badly. Not to mention he still has two RFA defencemen not locked up when teams could be lining up to throw around offer sheets (in general, not just at Philly). He could suddenly find himself short all of his puck moving LD (not likely, but possible).

On top of that, moving Ghost means that you have one pair that's fairly inexperienced again, with Hagg-Myers or Morin-Myers. I guess you could do Provorov-Myers, but that's a lot to put on Myers right away.

Popping the cork a bit, are ya?  Lol

    Just kidding.

This is not the time for science experiments. Ghost is either one of your top D-men, or you move him for a very profitable return. Outside of our little forum here, he is regarded as a rare commodity with little focus on his "down year". If he is traded, the Flyers will regret that move. I dont think he is going anywhere

I've actually suggested ghost at F for a couple of years so that you can use a F spot on him in expansion. Of course, mostly tongue in cheek...

That isn't quite the way offer sheets work.  How much were you willing to spend for Kapanen?

Why would you trade a young good defenseman for a third line player?

He said trade Haag. Haag was quite possibly the worst defenseman in the league.

He's also not likely to be a guy Dubas would want. He's an analytics guy.

Did you see Makar's debut in the playoffs? Kid is electric. I'd trade Patrick for Makar any day of the week...and I do think Patrick has untapped potential ....but we will never see Patrick and electric in the same sentence.

Yes, but will he score 60 goals? :ph34r:

    Good to see you back!

    I think it's Patrick.

I'd do Ghost, Patrick and 11th, I think.   I know I just reopened the 3C slot, but damn, I do it anyway.

that won't really work with the Flyer's cap situation. Marner's getting 11 million, so 6.5 more than Ghost, down to ~16.5 million. Still need Provorov, Konecny and Sanheim signed, and even if you dump Laughton and Hartman, you need to fill those slots PLUS 3C now, plus two more forwards. Patrick doesn't have enough cap to make it work. I really don't think a single trade works here. The Flyers would need to move out cap in order to sign Marner, so either Toronto has to clear space to accept a contract like Voracek, or the Flyers need to move out something expensive elsewhere for a whole lot of not much.

Can you imagine if the Flyers are really in on Marner? How would that even work? I shudder to think at what would go the other way.

Ghost, for sure. The 11th. Frost or Farabee.

Crap. Maybe that's why Fletch isn't worried about blocking Frost. He's going to trade him for Marner.

How would you guys feel about that deal?

who is reporting that they're in on Marner? I would think that if they're going after him that you would see ghost and Konecny going the other way. There's really no other way that works. I guess Vorachek, but I'm not sure that the Leafs would be after someone older like him.

    Why, what happened?

Cap is projecting low, 82 or less. Fliyers have 22 million in space with Provorov, Sanheim, Konecny, Laughton, and Hartman to sign. Plus they need two wings and a backup goalie. They gain a couple million when they demote Schlemko and Lyon, but Myers will take up most of Lyon's savings. If they move Hagg, that's up to 24 million, but it's still pretty tight, especially if you want a cushion for bonuses.

  13. 11 minutes ago, ruxpin said:

Yeah, they have room to sign their RFAs,  but taking on salary in a trade or via FA will be pushing.

You COULD possibly fit in another $6-$7M winger with trading Ghost, but it's getting really tight I would think.

And then you're almost praying neither Lindblom, Patrick, or Myers breaks out this season, because you only have 8 million plus the cap increase to pay them with.

  14. The Flyers really aren't in a position to pick up salary without salary going back anymore. That also means that they are all but definitely losing any probable trade that includes Ghost. It's also why I still think he may be on his way out. I'm petrified of the next move that isn't re-signing the RFAs.
