  1. fair enough

like Aziz said, if a GM wants what Homer has, he will come to the table. But, to your point, he might be sitting alone for quite some time, especially with what he has to offer

I think Holmgren will be sitting alone for a long time because he does not have what anyone wants and no other GM wants to deal with him. Let's see what happens this week. I don't see much yet.

  2. Don't be such a drama queen. This isn't Days of Our Lives. The fact is that teams want Schenn, Voracek, Couturier, Giroux, Simmonds and Read and Homer isn't willing to part with them yet... or at least teams DID want them before they ended up having such a mediocre year (except for Jake who's really come into his own this year).

Also, because of the shortened season no one is completely out of contention and thus they're not holding fire sales for stars (except Calgary apparently). Everyone is still a buyer. No one's a seller right now. There hasn't been a whole lot of movement league wide as a result. Think about it... the big deal Homer may or may not pull off is Ryan Clowe? Seriously?

Now add in to that equation the fact that Homer doesn't have much in the way of Salary Cap room because of various miscues over recent years -which while it's a GM mistake to be sure, not the sort of thing that other GMs will hold against you.

Also, what's wrong with this team has no quick fixes. We're not a puzzle piece away from a cup. Bringing in a Jagr or a Iginla might help a tad with the scoring, but ultimately, it's not going to make this team a playoff competitor because it's not addressing the serious core issues on defense and I think Homer is smart enough to know that. What he's going to do about it remains to be seen, but at this point, it's certainly keeping him from making a desperate trade for yet another D-Man at the end of his career.

GMs don't not deal with other GMs because of crap like Weber. GM's do what they need to to make their teams better. If Homer went to someone and said, "Hey, I'll give you Giroux for your best defenseman." They wouldn't poo poo the deal out of spite because of something Homer did last summer.

It's a business. What other teams want, we're not selling and what we want they're not selling. It's as simple as that.

Not so hard Knut or you'll blow a nut! ;)

  3. @jackhole

He's pretty small for an NHL defenceman. That scares the heck out of me. Well that, and the fact we have nothing better in our system.

And the fact that we have Holmgren as our GM and there are core competency issues with his player evaluation and development.

  4. I do agree with you on a code GM's have. I was fortunate enough to golf with a former Flyers coach not long ago. He was telling me that when Carolina offered Federov that huge contract way back when it angered a lot of GM's at the time. They pretty much black listed Carolina for a full year. He said at the draft following the offer no would even talk to Rutherford. That was way back in the 97-98 season but I think some GM's still think the same. Although I don't think it's as bad to send an offer sheet now. I think everyone understands the money involved and the pressure to win.

Thanks for the info. Interesting on Rutherford. I do not feel good at all going into this off season because I feel that we have core issues with this GM's competence and that will set us back further. It is compounded by Snider's win at all costs every year mentality.

  5. you dont think this is a sign that maybe it could be the end of the homer era? yes snider said his job is safe but why would he say he's fired if he has no one to replace yet? he would never say anything about what's going to happen.

That is probably the point that I am ultimately leading to and making. Holmgren has alienated the rest of the GM's with his antics of using offer sheets instead of diplomacy, tact, and guile in this "boys club" of a NHL GM club. He is a rogue and just like in business it may make a splash but that's it. You become the ebola. And Holmgren has done this because while he was a good player, he is a lousy GM in my opinion, just like Clarke. And that is the mold and rep of Flyer GM's for the last 10+ years. Snider has authenticated it because Snider offers blind homerism. Until the Flyers ownership goes outside, it is what it is. I would not be surprised if there was both a new GM and the coach becomes a casualty before next October. Holmgren has the deck definately stacked against him trying to turn this team around as the result of what he has done. But, in a snap of a finger it all changes if Ed is not there.

  6. exactly. assets are assets, and if a GM sees something he wants...or if he wants to move something and finds the offered price acceptable, he'll make a trade. these aren't 6 yearolds pouting in the playground, these are businessmen who want to improve their teams, and they'll do what they need to to make that happen.

I mean, Holmgren probably isn't going to get a whole lot of future considerations deals, but, well, actually, he just did. so.

I thing there is some trust involved with these deals between GM's especially blockbuster ones. Harry Z today? This is a telltale sign. i sense we may have a dissappointing July. Let's see what happens then.

  7. curious, but what has happened to verify your point? most of us are afraid homer will trade the core of this team and any valuable draft picks for a bunch of semi-retired goons with beer guts, but you think Homer will get snubbed?

I don't see that at all. Homer will get his chances, its all a question of whether or not he is conscious when he pulls the trigger

I don't have anything to substantiate that right now, in all honesty, but I just sense that he may have a problem getting the conversation going in any earnst degree when he really needs to because he stepped over the line last summer. I appreciate the aggressiveness that Holmgren and Snider exhibit, but this is a boys club with the GM's. I suggest we wait until this summer in July to see what Holmgren comes up with. I suggest Holmgren is going to come up short and we are going to go into next year screwed. Again, nothing to prove my point except a hunch. This Harry Z trade today is just nonsense but could be an indication of the kind of fallout we may see in July.

  8. After last summer with the way this stone cold piranah went after players slashing and burning teams like Nashville his goose is cooked. Would you want to trade with or trust this Attilla The Hun kind of guy if you were another GM? This is going to work against the Flyers. Mark my words. There is still a genteman's code and Holmgren went over the line, written rules or no written rules. Let's see what this week then what the summer brings. :P

  9. The real questions are: who are the contenders who have such assets (and are willing to deal them)?

And, who is making that commitment to a player who is signed through 2019? (this is not a "rental")

Hartnell would immediately be the fourth highest-paid player on the Habs next season and I'm not entirely sold on the concept that any of the three have what you describe or are willing to part with it.

Holmgren just needs to find a team that is desperate enough. How about Pittsburgh? Boy, they would love Hartnell there, eh?

  10. Not being an ass here...but where does Hartnell agree to be traded too? I don't have a guess...

No problem. I would say any team that he wants to go to that he thinks he can win a Cup. Maybe Boston, Montreal, even Minnesota in the West.. If I am Holmgren I am looking for a contender that will pay the Flyers back in an under 30 age defenceman...

  11. The Flyers are going to need someone they can put on ice to take up for Talbot. That someone needs to be a defense minded guy and Ian Slater gets my vote. Harry Z will probably be the replacement but I don't see him as a 'defense first" player. I am not worried about my third line center scoring so much as him shutting down the other teams top line. Below is a link to what his current coach(Terry Murray) thinks about him. Anybody that remembers Terry Murray from his time with the Flyers knows he does not give out praise easily.

    Ryan Clowe

  12. I was thinking the same thing..... isn't that Hartnell? And didn"t he just score a bunch of goals last year and sign a new contract?

Why in the hell do you bring in another guy like him?

Hartnell is getting packaged for a multi-player deal involving defensemen. That is one of the only assets the Flyers have left right now. Stay tuned.

  13. Great comeback!!!!

I wonder what Peter Laviolette said to them after they went down 4-2 and Bryz was having a melt down with his water bottle?

Yea, no question Lavy is back next year. No question at all.

Ed was pretty happy to. Nice to see. Checkbook will be ready to go Wednesday.

  14. Thought it would be nice and neat to have our daily draft position updates all combined into one thread....this is *quite* exciting, with all the world class talent available....this could my most exciting Flyer draft ever!!

It is now official, the Panthers have beat the Sabres in a thrilling 4 round shoot out!! That leaves the Flyers tied for 3rd last in the league, behind the Panthers, Aves and tied with the Bolts. Panthers with the win, climbed to 26 pts, a meager 3 pts worse than the Flyers.....WE CAN DO THIS!!!

The Aves can go from 26 pts to 28 pts with a win in Vancouver, it's currently 0-0 with 5 mins left in the first.

Apparently the Fylers did not get the memo tonite.

  15. Not to undermine your post but a pig uses it nose to find truffles. A blind pig could find them all day long, really.

This is what its come to for me.

I haven't watched a game in weeks-just been getting updates via twitter. I hope they dont ruin their downward trajectory and screw up a top 5 pick.

    CHeers and happy easter

    -M

Really? Well I leaned somethin' Thanks! Happy Easter!

  16. Well... he said nothing earth shattering. Kind of disappointing but so is this team....

I was looking at Snider's eyes when Comcast played the interview after the game. The Philadelphia Flyers sports media are basic classless low-life jerks that have cheesesteaks up their xsses, with no respect for a man like Snider. They should be slapped along the side of the head a few times and told to sit down and shutup. T. Pinochio is a perfect example. If you looked in Snider's eyes during the interview, you could see that this was a man not only dissappointed in his team, but very irritated, pissed and who wanted next year to start tomorrow. Watch out. When Ed is pissed changes happen and he spends. I have been a vocal critic of Snider many times myself but this guy even at his age is driven to win like no other owner I have ever seen. All of the other owners not only of Philadelphia teams, but all sports teams would be well served to learn from Snider's determination and passion. Holmgren is safe and I think he will keep Laviolette at least another year because of the lousy deck he was dealt this year with failed trades and injuries and all. Expect Snider to go all out starting this week.

  17. I'd be surprised if Knuble comes back, he's been a healthy scratch for most of March. Gagne, time to move on, although I respect the hell outta the guy, can't let emotional attachment stop us from making the right moves. Rusty,.....gone. I don't see Mez being gone unless he gets dealt at the draft or over the summer, which is possible. Off your list, I'd say Harry.Z comes back, he's filled the energy role nicely when he's called upon (which is not often enough for my liking).....ditto for Gus, we have not really given Gus a fair shake, all these useless scrubs playing in front of him, what a waste. Gus should be playing out the rest of the year to see what we have...same for Oliver.

Probably agree that Gus and Oli Poly play out big minutes through the end of the year to see what we got. Mez too injury prone to build a D with him in it. I see him as a nice fit for say Florida. Harry Z can be trade bate. Iron Mike, maybe not but i sure like his presence in front of the net. Gave Boston fits today. Gagne still has some play making but limited time on a 3rd line at best. Brier is out of here, his choice of location.

  18. Well... he said nothing earth shattering. Kind of disappointing but so is this team....

What he did not say was that he was getting him pen ready to write some checks. Holmgren is salivating to make the D moves.

My bet who is gone - Rusty, Foster, Lilja, Gus, Mez, B Schenn, Gervais, Harry Z.. Surprisingly Gagne, Knuble return.. Briere is bought out...

  19. Kind of interesting how he responds to Homer's job being safe but then completely avoids the question about Lavy. I get that Homer makes the decision but he's got more input on these kind of things than most owners.

Laviolette will have one more year. If not more. He was handed a short stick this year and Holmgren and Snider know it. This is an organization that will not throw a guy like Laviolette under the bus for this year when they, Snider and Holmgren, know they are fully responsible for this mess. And Bryz haters, he will be back too.

  20. He is UFA at the end of this season and only $750K salary, that is obviously pro rated for the rest of the year.

They did call up Oliver Lauridsen. He is in the line up today.

OL 38 looks good today. Can skate, pass, shoot, nice with the stick in Marchant's chest. Foster, Gervais, Lilja, Gus, Mez all will be gone over the summer. This guy from Detroit is just a fillin' for the rest of the season. Kimmo, Colburn, Grossman, and Schenn the only D men guaranteed to come back next year. I want to see every Phantom D man brought up for a couple of games. Let; se Manning.

  21. This all sounds nice and good, by as long as The Old Man is running the team, this is not happening.

Yup, and then nothing happens with this organization, so everybody has choices who to follow for their "home team".

    I vote with my wallet.

  22. @OH1FlyersFan I was checking on Leier's stats the othe day and I noticed he had really good numbers.....and he's not playing on the top line or the top pp (as far as I know, maybe Claude can clear that up, he goes to Winterhawk games)....anyways, a nice solid year from the kid. Gives a lot of promise. I have watched Stolarz quite a few times now. His athleticism is noticed immediatley. He moves great for a big kid. A few of the times I watched him he gave up easy/soft goals, so that was not comforting...but can at least be worked on. At least he has the raw skills to be successful...at least IMHO.

But yeah, giving up Bob...I was pissed from the moment it happened. He's just so quick.....and relitively young for a NHL tender. A blind man coulda seen he has to much potential to give up on him, or make a "classy" move (sickening, really that line of thinking, I hope it's not right) to help the kid out.....outrageous is what is/was....Homer deserves to get fired for that move alone. Esp when you put it in the context that we have not had a legit #1 since Hextall was hacking people up like Jason.

Bob, Bob, and Bob. Fire Holmgren NOW.
