My prediction is Danny Briere flames out in under 5 years and never gets another front office job ever again.

With the Flyers (31-23-7) in third place in the Metropolitan Division and in position to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2020, general manager Daniel Briere said Friday that they could make a depth trade to help bolster the lineup for the postseason push as long it doesn’t interfere with their rebuilding plan.
“Everything’s on the table,” Briere said during the Flyers’ 5-2 loss against the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena. “We're not going to do a rental for high-end assets for the future. We're protecting those. We realize where we're at. It's not just about this year. It's about protecting the future, as well. If it's a hockey trade, that's a possibility.
Danny Briere is an idiot. This is the easiest trade deadline he will ever have to deal with and he's going to screw it up.

The cornerstone of our franchise (Couturier) is making $8M+ per year for a lot more years and is already playing on the fourth line. There is no fifth line.
Like the Leafs with Tavares, you can sort of do that if you also draft a bunch of super-talented offensive players, but the Flyers don't have a Matthews, Nylander, or Marner on the team. Maybe Michkov is a Matthews, that would be amazing, but that's not going to do it by itself without a lot more players around him.
The more I think about it, the more I think signing Konecny and hoping to draft their way to contention with just their current picks is reliving the Hextall years over again.

I'm ECSTATIC to move ahead with TK and Couturier (who we are stuck with).
Moving ahead with TK will mean we are stuck with him at some point as well.

This happens all the time with prospects, especially after the first round, which is why counting on more than 50% of your prospects to contribute is probably a recipe for disaster down the road. More prospects, especially high end ones, give you more shots at actual contributing NHL players.

People thinking long term were thinking “trade Couturier”. We didn’t, now he is no longer a tradable asset and the team hasn’t materially improved since 2021 (yes it feels better because they play hard, but I’m not sure their long term prospects are any better) because they kicked the can down the road.
Now the Flyers have an opportunity to repeat the cycle or break it with Konecny. I think we need to trade him, unfortunately.

I can't really beat anyone up over this.
That kind of hindsight, while devastatingly accurate 4 years and two back surgeries later just wasn't in anyone's awareness at the time.
His last healthy season before this one, he was a Selke winner, even though there are hard miles on him his game is such that he can age gracefully. No one was thinking he was a guy to be moved.

The hard decision is whether you also trade Couturier. I think the answer is yes and he has been my favorite player for years. No one over 25 is going to be good anymore by the time the team could be good again.
I would also institute a rule that if you played for the Flyers you can't ever have any role with the team ever again.

They are a likable team to watch.

The mission is codenamed, "Dead Cat Bounce".

Should have traded Coots when we had the chance.

Here to say I was on the trade Hart bandwagon. Oh well, another wasted asset.
5 hours ago, JR Ewing said:Auston Matthews - there was no chance in hell of getting him. I'm pretty sure it was either Toronto or he goes home to Arizona, and that's completely fine for the Flyers. He's a great goal scorer but a bad fit for where Philly is in their rebuild, which is the beginning stages. By the time the group around him would be ready to compete, he'll be moving into the decline phase of his career.
Since Konecny is a few months older than Matthews, this is why we should be trading Konecny.
People getting duped by the relative success this year are going to look at next year's regression and wonder what happened. Keeping your eye on the prize is trading assets that won't be able to help when you want to be good for assets that will be able to help then.

Sure but it all depends on what we mean by “sell.” Do they need to trade every player over the age of 27 (everyone who can be traded)? Or say they don’t trade Konecny, does that mean they’re not serious about rebuilding?re: same old Flyers…
I don’t know if you just missed every interview or what, but Jones/Briere/Tortorella have specifically said they’ve abandoned the “just make the POs” approach. They’ve reiterated their commitment to doing things differently than the previous managers, again specifically citing they won’t
sacrifice the future or derail long-term goals just to make a PO run. They’ve said they’re trying to build a team that can win the Cup and be a perennial Cup contender, what we generally call an “elite” NHL team.
I don’t how they can make themselves any more clear. I’m satisfied they’re on the right track. At least now they’re finally on one that may produce a Stanley Cup champion.
Talk is cheap. The Flyers are the President's Trophy of talkers.

Define what you mean.
What's the same old because I'm not seeing it yet.
What's different? The team plays hard?
Reasonable minds can differ on trading Konecny. I happen to believe the team is still woefully devoid of Stanley Cup talent and he is their biggest chip to trade.
Not trading Seeler and Walker would be a fireable offense.

I can't wait for the Flyers to put all that valuable experience they gain in a first round loss this year into missing the playoffs next year.

Some players just DGAF about that some just want all the money.
Every player should try to get every cent they can. The owners certainly are.
I mean the owners are the ones that insisted on a salary cap. We lost a season before the players accepted it.
Now you want those same players to also cut the owners a deal and not take what they can get.
Hell of world we are living in.

Can't win the Kentucky Derby with a draft horse.

I am sure the playoffs would go differently.
No need to sell high. We got them right where we want them.

If Konecny continues this production, his next contract is going to be 8 years long and at least $8M per year.
The only question is whether the Flyers or another team give it to him.

Two teams wanted him as long as we picked up some salary.
Sure they did. Keep telling yourself that.

No one was trading for this guy.
We had to listen here for years how Andrew MacDonald was going to be traded and it never happened. This isn’t going to either.

when a woman is a genuine victim of SA and has the courage to come forward and press charges, typically her first thought is for justice and the punishment of the perpetrator..she is not thinking about any financial matters first and foremost. That stuff might come later in a civil settlement but the primary goal is justice, vindication and resolution.
Isn't that exactly what happened here?
She reported it to police, who swept it under the rug. After the criminal justice system let her down, only then did she resort to the civil system.

Seeler and Walker are two non-entities that were largely acquired for free. The return doesn't really matter. All he has to do is trade them and don't do anything dumb like keep them for a "playoff run" (or worse, resign them).
