  1. I agree that there may be some pieces on the roster now who could be important players on a possible serious contender say in 5 years.  Farabee could be a really good player if surrounded by really good talent.  But they feel like mostly complementary players (the Browns) than the stars who will strike fear into opposing teams (Kopitar).

(I say 5 years because I don't think its realistic that they can contend until Gautier and Michkov are both on the team and that feels like it will be 2-3 years.  I also don't think it's realistic to expect those two in their first year to be the Flyers' best players on a contending team.)

It just feels like they are 1-2 All-Stars short of a Cup winning team at this point, especially on D.  Those guys could be on the roster or in the system now (Bonk), but given what we know about the chances of even first round picks not developing into that kind of player (due to injury or otherwise), I would feel a lot more comfortable if the Flyers cashed in some current assets for some picks or prospects who will be coming into their own on the Michkov timeline, which is when the Flyers' window will open (if it ever does).

I think how the current regime handles some limited success this year will tell us a lot about whether they have learned any patience from previous regimes' terrible impatience.

Define star talent. The only reason I ask is because that term is being thrown around like the term "franchise player" used to be.

Is a star player someone who scores 100 points in a season? Is it someone who scores 50 goals? Is it someone who has a two-way game like Patrice Bergeron had? Is it a defenseman that averages a point per game and plays 25+ minutes a night?

See what I mean. Star player is so generic that with no definition, it could be anything.

I'm not trying to be difficult, but there really needs to be a definition of what a star player is.

    A multiple all star.  Done.

Losing begets more losing. Then the players become losers.

    Citation needed.

In the 00s, LAK drafted in the top 5 three years in a row and had multiple first round picks in one of those years and one of the preceding years.

In the 00s, CHI was terrible for a decade before they won the first Cup.

The TBL drafted in the top 5 three years in a row (1st and 2nd overall in back-to-back years) and had multiple firsts in other years in the 10s.

The losing didn't hurt these teams.

  4. The real trick is management identifying ASAP the ones they think will be future cornerstones and moving the others for picks/prospects before it becomes apparent to others around the league that they aren't going to be impact players.  If you do it at the right time, you can really keep the prospect pool coming - if you wait too long, you're left with players no one wants.

Or you can do what the Flyers have historically done - lock those players in for long term deals because they have one good season and the Flyer's need to compete every year requires those players to be good.  Hopefully the Flyers are done with paying based on what they want the player to be instead of what the player is.

I don't think TK alone brings back a blue-chip top of the lineup defenseman.

Of course not.  He might bring back a prospect or pick that becomes this in 3-5 years.

He's young enough now that in 4 years he'll still be pretty good.

Good enough to be making $7-8M to infinity?  You're going to have to make that decision in less than 4 years.  Personally, I need to see a couple of ppg seasons before I give him that kind of cash and I probably wouldn't even then because his age isn't going to line up very well with the rest of our prospects.

  6. Well, Frost had 5G/11A in 55 games in his age 22 season.  Let's see what Pinto does in his age 23 season.

My main point was that you're not getting a guy who scored 20G in his age 22 season for nothing.  I would probably stick with Frost as well, but something like Frost is what it is going to take.
