  1. Interesting topic. I think he's a little too expensive but like the idea of him on the same line as G.

Who would you give up for him? For. That matter, if the Ducks stop asking for Coots and Schenn, who would you offer for Ryan?

  2. Who's the other goalie in Adirondack? Is he a potential NHL starter or backup?

I have mixed thoughts about Leighton as a backup.

On one hand, he probably wouldnt suck with 15-20 starts over the course of a season and he'll be a cheap cap hit.

On the other, the 2010 finals are still haunting me.

  3. Yeah, the company wasn't managed too well but they made some great stuff. I used to work for a company called Autometric (back in the '90s) which eventually was bought up by Boeing. We did a lot of 3D satellite imaging and at the time SGIs were the only computers that could really do that kind of stuff well. Now of course, you can do it on your laptop.

Early to mid-90's they were the cats butt! I put a lot of servers in NASA & NOAA, plus some agencies that deny their existence for satellite ingest. Also did a few caves, virtual area networks, and a virtual roller coaster.

You're spot on about management being bad. When it was time to make a business decision, it was almost always a bad one.

    I also remember Autometric.

  4. The the players missing assignments and not back checking.

To me, that's the key reason we lost the 2nd round. Yes, Bryz made some bad plays but how many times was he hung out to dry?

D-zone coverage breakdowns from all positions contributed to losing the series. How many replays of Devils goals was a player alone in front of the net with a Flyer just coming into the camera view as the puck was in the net?

Also, why the coach was unable to calm the players down when it came to breaking out of their zone is a mystery.

  5. @hf101: don't like chunkman? It's an old Internet pic from my former Silicon Graphics colleagues. Also reminds me of how the Flyers exited the playoffs. Probably change it soon....once I decompress from the last couple of months of insanity.

I'd do that trade for J. Johnson. Especially if they give us their #1 pick again.

@Jack Straw: my bad. I thought Toews and JVR were the same draft class. So, would we have won game six if we drafted Kane? :-)

  6. Initially, I wasn't crazy about the elimination of the two line pass violation.

Maybe it had something to do with watching hockey for 35 or so years.

Either I'm used to it or just plain like how it opened up the game more.

Now, I'm not so sure I want to see the red line brought back to the NHL.

I don't know if correlating injuries to the elimination of the red line is accurate or not.

    Sure, injuries increased, especially concussions.

One thing that changed is the awareness of concussions today.

We really don't know how many players went out on the ice in the past that wouldn't be allowed in the lineup today.

With that in mind, I'm not convinced the injury statistics would have changed very much over the last 20 years or more.

How many injuries still occur on icing touch ups?

Most icings are fairly straight forward, meaning there's a lone defenseman casually skating back for the touch up.

I still like a tight game when there's a race for the puck.

I say keep the current icing rules.

Sure, get rid of the trapezoid and let the goalie be a part time 3rd defensemen.

  7. Wingnut: a ten minute overtime is interesting. Should reduce the number of shootouts. Maybe stop at the five minute mark and skate 3 on 3 for the final five minutes? That would show some interesting line combinations...but suck for teams playing 70 minutes at the end of back to back games.

  8. @hf101: Yes a shootout loss ends the streak and the asterisk goes away.

An overtime tie changes it to an unbeaten streak.

The latter, if I'm not mistaken, contributed to the Flyers 35 game unbeaten streak in the '79 -'80 season.

    Re: shootout.

I never liked the idea. What's wrong with a tie?

On the other hand, I remember watching quite a few games before SO and Overtime when teams seemed content to split the point and did nothing offensively the last 5 minutes or so of the 3rd period.

I'd rather see tinkering with OT than rely on the shootout to decide a game.

  9. HF: good sig! I never thought the shoot out was a good idea.

A couple of months ago I posted here supporting Bryz and said he needed more time to acclimate and would come around and be the goalie we paid for...

That doesn't seem to be the case. What goes better with crow: wheat or rye bread?
