So if it isn't Shaw then who do you want as the next coach?

Brad Shaw is acknowledged around the league as a talented coach. Tortorella gives him credit for Zamula's development and York's - and that's saying a lot.

But why do the Flyers need to change coach? If Tortorella wants out that's one thing but I hope nobody is thinking of changing coaches until Tortorella's had enough of the Flyers ... or the Flyers have had enough of him.

Putting out defensive players in OT is not playing to win, that’s playing not to lose.

yep. And it’s out of character for Tortorella he’s been preaching “safe is death” or something like that all year.

the Rags are 8-1 in OT this year for obvious reasons but keeping your goal scorers on the bench is like handing it to them. You’ll never stop their best with the Flyers’ best defensive forwards, not with that much open ice. The only  chance is to win the draw and then attack the net.

And Sandstrom with his most effective play of the game…..leaving the ice…..🙄

Haha so true! Soon as he's off the ice they score...

sure why not Reinhardt gets his 50th...

I hate to blame the goalie when you only score 1 goal but if Sandstrom makes that first save...feels like this was a winnable game with better goaltending.

  4. Verhaeghe scores the backbreaker- and it's another one "Sandstrom would like to have back" ... 2 soft goals out of 3 ...

Meanwhile the Flyers keep missing the net every other shot... if they hit the cage Stolarz comes up with a big save.  Frustrating game...

edit: PP goal 6-on-4 ... nice to get one but it feels like Sandstrom will give up another softie before it's over. OMG Poehling wide open net ... unbelievable . That was the story of the Flyers' night in one play right there.

  5. What a surprise...Sandstrom "would like to have that one back" ... hopefully that's the only softie today but I wouldn't bet on it.

Great to see Foerster go right at Tkachuk for that cheapshot trip after the horn.

edit: Oh jeez they can't be serious - a Cats' PP after Tkachuk started the whole thing? That's is some shabby officiating. And Tarasenko scores .... love the Power Kill but sometimes ... burned them on that one...

  6. and they do! Tyson Foerster with the GWer what a laser Ulmark didn't stand a chance on that one.

2 goals for TK...one on the PP ...

Helluva win for the Flyers - good they hung on in regulation Flyers been looking shaky in OT lately.

Finally ended the 0-7 against the Bruins. Great win.

edit: rookie goal-scorers this year Bedard leading with 21 - Foerster has 18.

It would have been different, for sure. They weren't winning Game 7, in Boston Garden.

You know...who knows and all that... the betting money would certainly have been with the Bs but that Flyers' squad had goal-scorers, had Bernie plus every one of them were scrappers and fighters. They didn't takeshit from anybody just ask the Red Army a few years later 😁

I wonder where the betting money is today going into the 3rd up 1-0...

If you get the chance @FD19372 ask for another PP goal please!

Gilles Gilbert nearly stole the Cup from Bernie.

Gilbert finished G6 with a .962 ... a .962 (!) - and lost the game and the Cup. We know why: Bernie finished with a 1.000.

I'll never forget that G6  - Orr and Clarke going at it - because my fav player (besides Clarke) was Rick MacLeish. I thought he was the "coolest" player in the whole NHL ...(I was very concerned with what was "cool" back then ... 😎)

How different the Flyers' history might be if Bernie doesn't absolutely lock it down that day...

All along they said it was a rebuild. They said "dont fall in love with" the players. The moves were supposed to be for a rebuild.

Very true but all rebuilds are not the same. Some around here, long time Flyers’ fans, question whether what Briere’s doing is a rebuild at all. And you can’t blame them let’s face it Briere is doing a quasi-rebuild, keeping, re-signing some older players while emphasizing he won’t mortgage the future for the sake of one PO run. It’s a multi-year program but nothing that resembles a full rebuild.

So yeah I think his moves fit his words pretty well. If he was truly “going for it” this year he would’ve made a whole slew of different moves. Instead it was a few tweaks, minor moves that shored up the depleted D while picking up another 1R.

Of course they contradicted everything they said , but only to a small degree,

Contradicting what they said all year would’ve meant an absurd (and irresponsible) change in direction. Because remember the first we heard anyone in mngmt say “we want to make the POs” was just prior to the TD. No one either before or after ever said, “but if we surprise everyone and are sitting in a PO spot at the TD, we’ll trade whoever it takes to make sure we drop out of the race.”

The moves Briere made (and didn’t make) fit with what he’s said all along. I suspect if the team wasn’t in the PO race we would’ve seen more movement but probably not a lot more.

  11. The "book" on Laughton is well-known to the Flyers, not so much by the other GMs. Maybe Briere valued him too highly. I don't think so but it's a reasonable POV. He said he wanted "more than market value" but wasn't offered that. 21's still with the Flyers for now but @RonJeremy is right, trading him on Draft Day could be worthwhile if it allows Briere to acquire a higher pick, don't you think?

This was a great play all the way around IMO, Farabee's pass was great.

It was - and the goal couldn't come at a better time... right after TK and Sanheim fail to control the puck at the 'Canes blue line sends Martinhook in untouched, he rips it past Ersson ... I felt like "oh no another blowout coming?" But 25 secs later... a beautiful play, great finish by #21.

and now ... the Daily Sermon ...

This year the Flyers are establishing a baseline of respect - for the logo, for each other and for the fans (+ pride in their own game). That takes preparation and commitment. It's developing slowly, steadily below the surface, becoming ingrained in the personality of the team. That's why I expect it will survive with or w/out Tortorella.

All the Flyers and in particular the younger guys own that preparation etc. and they'll own it the rest of their careers. Doesn't automatically make them great hockey players but championship teams all share those qualities. When Briere adds talent he'll be looking for guys who share them too.
