  1. well, let's look at it...

Suter said he wants to test the market. Nashville says they want to make a run to convince players that they really are committed to winning. They make a commitment to their goalie, make a deal for a depth character/faceoff guy and bring in a Russian star (who averages a point per game in the playoffs and is *still* a distraction) - adding to the signing/trades for the Kostitsyns, the Preds make the playoffs and get to the Conference Semis for the second year with arguably their best team yet..

We don't know what they offered Suter. We don't know if Suter even came to them and said "here's what I'm getting offered."

So Suter goes. To Minnesota. Who hasn't made the playoffs since 2007-2008. Because Nashville "isn't committed to winning."

Does this pass your "smell test" because it stinks like high heaven to me. You know who doesn't seem "committed to winning" to me?

    Suter.

Weber then decrees that Suter abandoning the team shows the team is not committed to winning and he wants to leave.

Really? One guy leaves and that's it - furn out the lights on the franchise's hopes? Who's saying this? Some crazy-ass fan on a message board with some theory about whether Nashville is a viable place for hockey? No. Weber is. The guy who's wearing the C for the organization.

We don't know what Weber was offered. We don't know a lot of what led up to the offer sheet being made.

We do know he decided to run out on the organization on some flimsy excuse that he, in large part, created.

And that - losing TWO players after losing ONE caused the CAPTAIN of the organization to lose faith - may, indeed, kill the franchise fanbase in Nashville.

    We'll see.

It's just not as clear cut as we as Flyer fans might like it to be.

I think it comes down to Nashville being an "unsexy" hockey market. That area is college football all the way. Even the Titans are second imo. Suter goes to Minnesota that is a big time hockey town, and Weber wants to go to Philly which is a hockey crazed city as well. So even though Nashville is on the rise and is doing better, it doesnt have that hockey city glamour to it. So i think more then money, that is why Suter and Weber opted to take their talents elsewhere. And since one of them came here...screw it i am happy. But i see what you mean with the prima donna references lol

  2. Not entirely true. Paul and Poile could have an arrangement to trade back the 4 first round picks in exchange for roster players. If so, most likely it would be for some of our young guns or maybe one of our better d-man. (Coby?Mez?)

I would guess it would be two picks for two players. That way Nashville isnt totally sold short and the Flyers can still have future talent to develop. Radoran is probably right that maybe pursuing Doan is unrelated. But it helps if the Flyers have to give up a few forwards to ensure that Weber ends up here.

  3. to NHL95 there is no sweetening the pot for weber. he will either play in philly or nashville and no trade can be made after an offer sheet is given.

More along the lines of an agreement where Nashville says "Ok, we wont match the offer but lets trade those draft picks for some of your players"

  4. I think that has been the plan all along.

Look for Homer to include Voacek's rights in a trade to Nashville. Maybe Read too.

And then sign Doan AND Weber.

    Take THAT, Minnesota!

    Bring on the Stanley Cup!

I can live with that. Its a win win for everybody...except the Coyoyes ofcourse but so what. lol. Vorachek is a decent player but definitely worth dealing and Doan can still play even at 36.

  5. The hot rumour is that the Flyers have Shane Doan in town for a visit. Do any of you agree that they are pursuing him just incase they have to trade one of their Forwards to Nashville and sweeten the pot for Weber to get here?

  6. It's not "Giroux's Team" - it's an actual team. I don't understand the "need" to name a new captain. I don't understand the continued need to anoint someone with a letter "for a purpose" when that theory has blown up in the face time and time again.

He is an important part, and undoubtedly one of the best players in the game, but this team is having success because of the play from top to bottom.

For example - the Pens are "Crosby's Team" now after being "Malkin's Team" for most of the year. They had no idea what team they were when they got here.

When faced with a better team, they got beat. It's why the Stanley Cup Playoffs expose frauds better than most.

Malkin - the "league MVP" - had two goals. Maybe one that "mattered" in the end (today's goal that NBC's color guy thought was "almost like two goals" and Mike Milbury thought apparently changed the entire orbit of planets in a distant galaxy meant nothing 30 seconds later).

Crosby - the "best player in the world" - had eight points (three in the 10-3 blowout, admittedly important points) - and zero in the final game.

This isn't "Giroux's Team" - it's the Philadelphia Flyers. And I think that's just how Giroux likes it.

What i meant by saying "Giroux's team" was him being the face of the team but not the end all be all. The guy who takes charge and carries the team when they need it. I agree to not want everything to revolve around him and that is correct. But to assume the role as the leader of the team by earning it with performances like he had today is very good to have.

  7. He's still got an over 35 contract and will have to be an LTIR decision at the start of every season - and will need to miss his bathselines each year for the remainder of his contract. So, they can go 10% above the cap during the off-season, which could allow you to sign a Calre, but if Pronger is able to return, you are stuck needing to make an immediate move in an environment that other teams know you are stuck.

There is hope that an accomodation might be made in a new CBA, but that's sheer speculation and not a basis upon which one can make a long term signing decision.

Pronger's situation has nothing to do with whether or not he "calls it quits" - because when the cap comes into play that doesn't matter.

True. I just believe that Pronger will be a man and step away with class and not milk this thing out. He seems like an unselfish guy that would take his families advice under consideration, and the best interest of the Flyers as well. I know that some of the greats in sports do not know when to walk away, but i think Pronger has an honorable like mentality in which he looks at the big picture instead of what he wants and does the right thing. Idk i just see him as that type of guy.

  8. yeah. i feel stupid for even reposting it, because in the grand scheme of things its what those guys want. I just saw it as one of those "well he could be great...but then again he could go the other way" its a devils advocate mentality that i believe this media market likes to play off of...

  9. http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/20120422_Flyers_Giroux_the_next_Clarke_____or_Lindros_.html

Do i even need to post the text in this article? To insinuate that Giroux could be either one or the other is ridiculous. Not because he is or isnt as good as Clarke. Or that he will deal with all of the injuries and off ice distractions in which ruined Lindros career. My point is, where do these hack writers come up with this nonsense? And why must they always try to weave the seeds of desention?

"He could be great like Clarke or he could flame out like Lindros" why? Giroux will do what he does through out his career. Just shut up dude!!

  10. It all hinges on Pronger's status and whether or not they (and he) are willing to call his career definitively over.

If it was a body injury Pronger could shake it off. But a concussion (as bad as his was) at his age, and after all he has accomplished over his career i think he calls it quits. It sucks. But even before that i thought his lack of speed was becoming a liability. For the short time he was here though, that guy gave us alot. And i believe he had a strong input on the decision regarding whether or not the Flyers would be better off without Richards and Carter. Thats just my opinion though.

  11. Maybe i am being a homer now that Talbot is on the Flyers now. But looking back at how he did it, it was nicely done. The dude took a beating from Carcillo and got up and shushed us like he knew what was coming. Ofcourse we all hated it, and still do. But he took a beating to wake up his team and it worked. Letang though, just made himself look like again like i said, Milli Vinilli. He will be forever be linked to them now.
