  1. Getting Bryzgalov to shut his mouth and get out of the woods helped more than anything I think. Maybe Grossmann and Kubina allowed Bryzgalov to settle down, who knows? But it came together at the right time. There's no denying we'd be better with Pronger in the lineup; he brings a lot more than what we get to see on the ice. But the OP's point about a "blessing in disguise" is a good one imo.

Getting MAB some quality NHL time is a huge benefit. He's ready to work the POs for us now and if he keeps the giveaways down he's an asset.

Hopefully we buy out Pronger's contract under the new CBA. It's hard to imagine him wanting to come back after what he's been through, considering his age, etc. The fantasy that Pronger returns and is the incredible force he once was is probably just that - a fantasy.

Pronger has always been one of my favorite players and was elated when the Flyers traded for him. He is a huge presence on the Flyers. But, if he decides to come back next year at his age and what he has been through this year, I will personally kick him in the teeth..........and then run like the dickens.

Also, without the additions of Grossmann and Kubina, this team was toast.

  2. There are lots of arguments/discussions about the defense and what to do about it. So i would like to hear some suggestions.

My thought is Carle will smell the big $$ out there and test the FA market, even though he likes Philly and wants to stay, it will be tough for him to turn down millions of extra dollars that can be made over the course of a new contract.

We also have to face the reality that Pronger is done, and Timmo is getting up there, and has one year left after this season.

So I assume we will have Coburn, Mez, and Bourdon as definites for next year then we have to decide what to do with Timmo. Do we keep him, or do we try to trade him at this years deadline, where teams generally overpay, and try and get a top young player and pick for him.

If Carle is going to walk, do we also trade him at the deadline and try and get a good young player/pick, or do we hold on to him, get knocked out in the first round and get nothing for him?

I dont think Gus is ready for full time duty, unless he was paired with Pronger, but since Pronger isnt coming back.......Of course if these guys are traded,we have all but written of the season.

I think that going into next year we will need 2 possibly 3 dmen depending on what happens with Carle and Timmo. If we trade our veterans like Timmo and Carle , then we will need to get one defensively sound veteran and a couple of solid young guys with defensive skill.

We could compile a few first rounder/ young players in dealing these guys, free up big $ ,and then using those assets, we can sign a guy like Suter and Bryan Allen, and then trade for another young dman, or move up in the draft and land an imapct dman.

The real scary part is we can find oursleves without timm and Carle over the next 2 years and have absolutely nothing to show for it, and still we will be faced with a lack of qualitty dmen in outr system

Any other thoughts or suggestions ?

As much as I hate to say it, I've writtem Pronger off. I think his career is over. Damn shame, he is the glue to the team.

I would like to see Carle stay, but only at an affordable rate. If it gets too rich, let him walk. On the other hand, he may be traded at the deadline in a package for another D'Man possibly?

I think Kimmo will play out his contract and retire at the end of next season. I have no problem at all with him doing that. He's a great player.

Sign Suter in the off-season to fill in Carle's spot, assuming he's gone.

  3. Have you guys seen this yet?

Looks like the Jackets may be getting ready to hold a fire sale. Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!!! Everything must go.

Apparently the Rangers are interested. Pittsburgh too. And Yahoo is reporting that Bluejackets GM Howson met with Holmgren. Hopefully that wasn't about Jeff Carter - the article refers to his trade to the Jackets as a cancerous mistake. Which sums it up nicely.

Anyway, I hope the Flyers aren't looking at Nash. At one point maybe, but not now. We have a lot of great young talent and I don't see a place for Nash. Let's develop who we already have. They're coming along really well and should be encouraged to continue on that pace. Focus on the defense. That's where we should be looking to add talent.

As badly as the Flyers need defense, I don't see Jagr lasting in the playoffs. I also don't see Jagr extending his career much past next season. And let's face it, he's a skating turnover factory. He's not nearly as quick as he once was. I think Nash and Giroux would be devestating. If I'm Homer and have a chance to grab Nash and wait till summer to sign a topnotch D'Man, I do it.

  4. After watching he Preds last night, specifically Webber&Suter (their loss) I think I'd still rather have Pronger back than one of them as his replacement. JVR is frequently mentioned in discussions here, typically negative, lets get rid of him in nature. My question is are all these GMs stupid, uninformed, blind in one eye, can't see out of the other? They don't want Giroux,Hartnell,Read,Briere,Simmonds,Voracek,Cooter,etc.. They always want JVR,why is that? I have mentioned Andy Sutton,as a decent,BIG,cheap "D" man who could get the Flyers threw the rest of the season. Pronger may suprise us and make it back,I hope so.In good playing shape he is still the best choice!

Unfortunately, with the quality of play we get from Bryz, we could trade for Boston's starting 5 skaters and it wouldn't make a difference.

  5. I think I'd pass and turn my attention to a forward that will replace Jagr when he gets hurt again. Nothing against the guy, but I just don't think he'll be durable enough for the playoffs.

Unless of course, something along the lines of a Suter becomes available. Then, I would turn my attention back to a D'Man.

  6. Very true. I'd like Cooter to see more ice-time. Unlike JVR, he seems to make those around him better. Can't wait until he is our permanent 2nd line center....

Oh yeah. I agree 100%. I can't believe how smart and poised he is with the puck. It's really amazing for an 18 year old kid. Yeah, I'd like to see him get more minutes and play with more talented players.

JVR?? Maybe it's just me, but, I was expecting a whole lot more out a #2 overall pick. I thought he turned the corner in the playoffs last year. Now I'm back to not caring what happens to him. He's basically a time killer while the real threats take a breather.

  7. So what do you do then? Trade Jagr? do you still pursue Weber?

Jagr/Giroux/Hartnell got it going on. The line seems flat with one of them out. You have to keep Jagr and hope for the best at this point.

I would be willing to give up a significant amount for Weber. He's arguably the best D'Man in the league and tough. He's basically the Pronger of 10 years ago. A game changing/dominating defenseman is required to go deep in the playoffs.

The glaring problem is Bryz. If he continues to play like he has been, it's a 1st round exit. Without a solid goalie, the ship is sunk.

  8. Without a Pronger "type" D'man, we're not deep enough on defense to make a cup run.

As much as Jagr has surprised me with his play, I don't see him being healthy enough for a strong playoff run. He's already gimped up.

Bryz flat out sucks. Total disappointment. Based on his current play, no chance in the playoffs.
