Greg Pateryn hangs up the skates

Recommended Posts

I always like guys like Pateryn, a fifth rounder taken by Toronto, a big hulking guy who can be timed with a sundial on the ice, not much was expected if anything at all, Toronto took Luke Schenn in the first, Pateryn was an afterthought, the fifty second defenseman taken in his draft class.

He had a nine year NHL career, never suiting up with the Leafs, he was dealt to Montrealwhere he spent parts of four seasons splitting time between the big club and the AHL, traded to Dallas for Jordie Benn he spent a full season as a 6th starter followed by the same witb the Wild the following year. After that he fell into a pattern in recent years of bouncing between the AHL and NHL, in fact in 2020-21 he spent time with the Sharks, Avalanche, Wild, and the San Jose Barracuda and Iowa Wild, altogether five teams. He signed with the Ducks for last season, splitting time between the Ducks and their AHL team in San diego. Not sure if it is a record or not but between January of 2021 and October of 2021, he appeared on the ice for seven different teams and four organizations.

He chose to hang them up after finding no real offers for his services as a hulking stay at home defender, he had several offers in Europe, but he decided that rather than go overseas for one more payday that he had done enough on the ice. Instead he will be joining the front office of the Penguins, in its own way it is an eighth team in a bit over a year, lol.

Slow news day but guys like Pateryn deserve a little ink every now and then as well as the big boys.
