Man, that's hard.   It depends on this, I think:

There was no cap, so does the drafting of Lindros negate the trade for Messier?

The trade would have included Nemchinov and Richter.   Amonte would have been part of the trade, as well.   He was traded before the Cup-winning playoffs and the net from that trade (Matteau & Noonan) played well.

 

So, the pause here, for me is what happens with Messier and Richter?   Does the trade of Richter mean John Vanbiesbrouck is the starting goalie?

Does a Rangers team with Lindros but without Nemchinov, Messier, Matteau, and Noonan -- not to mention without Richter -- with the Cup?

 

I have a hard time believing they win without Messier & Richter.   I'm going to say "no, they don't win the Cup. Not that same year, anyway" but what a thought experiment!

I honestly believe that Cup series was rigid to stop the chant of 1940!
