Brewin Flames
Game # 45 Bos 9 Habs 4 Marchand has 11th straight 20-goal season, Heinen gets 1st hat trick as Bruins beat Canadiens 9-4 ByAP Updated: Jan 20, 2024, 11:02 pm BOSTON -- — Brad Marchand set a club record by scoring his 20th goal for the 11th consecutive season, Danton Heinen got his first career hat trick and the Boston Bruins rolled to a 9-4 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday for their fourth straight victory. David Pastrnak added his team-leading 30th goal, Pavel Zacha scored the 100th of his career and the Bruins beat their longtime rivals for the 12 time in 13 meetings. Charlie Coyle and Jake DeBrusk also scored, and defenseman Brandon Carlo had a goal in his first game since being sidelined nearly two weeks with what he called a “little concussion.” The Bruins honored an era of from the late 1980s to 2000 in this their 100th season celebration before the game. “Nights like this don't happen very often,” Marchand said of the Bruins' goal-scoring outburst. “It's great when it happens in that fashion when we're recognizing past players against a big rivalry team for us. It was a fun night and great to see how everything came together.” Marchand broke a tie with Hall of Famer Johnny Bucyk and Patrice Bergeron, who both had 20 goals in 10 straight seasons. Linus Ullmark, playing for the first time since leaving a Jan. 9 game with an unspecified injury, made 17 saves as Boston which improved to 9-1-3 in its last 13 games. It was the Bruins' first nine-goal game at home against Montreal since Feb. 21, 1933. The fans started chanting “We want 10!” late in the game. “It's exciting. We love when the fans are into it,” Coyle said. “It's a special night, honoring that before and playing against the Canadiens on a Saturday night. There's not many better things than that, honestly.” Brendan Gallagher, Cole Caufield, Joel Armia and Mike Matheson scored for Montreal, which has lost five of its last seven. “The third period was hard,” Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis said. “Every now and then this league will humble you. That's kind of happened to our team in the third period. That's OK. Maybe it's a period that will send us to a higher place. We'll learn from it.” With the score tied 3-3, Heinen skated down the right wing and fired a wrister inside the far post for his second goal, pushing Boston ahead for good 10:46 into the second period. Coyle then tipped Pastrnak’s pass into the net, making it 5-3 less than a minute later. Gallagher’s score sliced it to 5-4 before Pastrnak scored on a partial breakaway early in the final period, just over 3 minutes before Marchand’s milestone goal. Heinen completed his trick, Boston’s second in two games after Pastrnak did it in Thursday’s win over Colorado, with a power-play score midway into the third. Boston has won two of three meetings between the Original Six rivals, with the season series finale coming March 14 at Montreal. “It’s strange but I am thankful that we get to play the Canadians four times this year, last year we only got to play them three times,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said at the morning skate. “It’s a rivalry game. It doesn’t matter. Steep history here between the Bruins and Montreal for decades.” Before the game, the Bruins held their fourth Centennial Era Night, honoring a period they called the “New Blood, New Beginnings” years from 1986-2000. The highlight was halting an 18-series playoff losing streak to the Canadiens in 1988. TD Garden fans booed briefly when a video tribute started with the Canadiens skating with the Stanley Cup before shifting to cheers when it showed success against their rivals. Hall of Famers Ray Bourque and Cam Neely held a banner that read: “Broke the Jinx” along with some former teammates. Boston’s defense was bolstered by the return of veterans Carlo and Derek Forbort, who missed 20 games with a an undisclosed lower-body injury. Brewin Flames
Game # 46 Bos 4 Jets 1 Bruins down Jets 4-1 for 5th straight victory in matchup of NHL division leaders ByAP Updated: Jan 22, 2024, 10:47 pm BOSTON -- — Charlie Coyle scored the tiebreaking goal late in the opening period and Boston’s tight defense carried the Bruins to their fifth straight victory, 4-1 over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night in a matchup of top NHL teams. Jake DeBrusk and Jakub Lauko also scored as Boston improved to 10-1-3 in its last 14 games. Jeremy Swayman made 20 saves for the Bruins, who lead the Eastern Conference with 67 points. DeBrusk had a short-handed goal with 5:25 left and Brad Marchand added an empty-netter. Winnipeg had given up no more than two goals in 14 consecutive games, and three or fewer in 34 straight — one short of the modern NHL record set by the 2015 Minnesota Wild. “We knew the challenge that was ahead of us. They’ve been playing some good hockey and they’re where they are in the standings for a reason. They don’t give up a whole lot,” Coyle said. “You remember the last time we played these guys. They played really well, and we played really bad. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth and we want to show them what we’re capable of and what we can do. We definitely saw more of that tonight." Vladislav Namestnikov scored for the Jets, who lead the Central Division with 64 points. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 17 shots. Last season, Boston set NHL records for wins (65) and points (135) before being eliminated in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by Florida. “That’s probably the worst game we’ve had in a long time with our breakouts,” Winnipeg coach Rick Bowness said. “We were slow moving it and the passes were soft. That allows Boston to play their game.” Coyle, positioned in the slot, tipped Linus Lindholm’s shot from the point and it sailed past Hellebuyck, pushing Boston ahead 2-1 with 1:34 left in the first period. The Bruins had jumped ahead when Trent Frederic collected a rebound and sent it over to Lauko, who scored from the top of the crease 2:20 into the game. Namestnikov tipped Dylan DeMelo’s shot from the point and it dipped past Swayman’s glove, tying it at 4:16. “I think it’s all about us,” Jets forward Kyle Connor said. “We can play against any team, and I think we’ve shown that. We were just a little timid.” After scoring nine goals in Saturday night’s win over Montreal and 14 total in their previous two games, the Bruins were faced with a tough test against the league’s best defensive team. They improved to 6-0-1 in their last seven meetings with the Jets, getting some payback for a 5-1 loss at Winnipeg on Dec. 22. “They embarrassed us the last time we were in Winnipeg,” Boston coach Jim Montgomery said. “We have a lot of proud guys that represent the Bruins for a long time in a real good way,” he added. “I think the opportunity to get back at them was something that was motivating.” The Jets came in giving up just 2.25 goals per game. Boston responded with some stingy defense of its own, holding the Jets to single digits in shots on goal until the closing minutes of the second period. Winnipeg also entered the night with the league’s top winning percentage (72.7%) and Boston was second (72.2).
Brewin Flames
Game # 47 Bos 2 Canes 3 Martinook scores on late breakaway to lead Hurricanes past Bruins, 3-2 ByAP Updated: Jan 24, 2024, 11:07 pm BOSTON -- — With no one between him and the goalie, Jordan Martinook picked out a spot and took his shot. It was off target. “It went in. That's all that matters,” the Hurricanes forward said after scoring on a breakaway with 2:27 left to snap a third-period tie and give Carolina a 3-2 victory over the Bruins on Wednesday night, snapping Boston's six-game winning streak. “Just tried to shoot quick. Didn’t really hit the spot I wanted to hit,” Martinook added. “Sometimes you catch a goalie off guard, and I feel like that’s kind of what it did. So, didn’t really hit where I wanted to hit. But it doesn’t matter. It went in.” Brad Marchand scored twice in the third period to rally Boston from a two-goal deficit and tie the game with 12 minutes to play. The goals gave him 395 for his career, tying Ray Bourque on the Bruins' all-time list. It was Boston's first loss in almost two weeks and its first in regulation since Jan. 4. “We’ve played in this building a lot over the last three or four years — in big moments, too,” said Martinook, who lost to Boston in the 2019 Eastern Conference finals and the first round the next year but eliminated the Bruins in the first round in 2022. “We know that this crowd can juice them up a little bit," he said. "You just focus on your next shift and try and get the momentum back on your side. And I felt like we did that pretty good.” Spencer Martin, waived by Columbus and claimed by the Hurricanes last week, stopped 25 shots in his first start for Carolina. He had not played since Jan. 2, when he took a 4-1 loss for the Blue Jackets against the Bruins. "Great for him," Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said. “He comes into a tough spot — we throw him to the wolves. And he held his own and he gave us a chance to win. Made a couple saves — crucial ones early, and then a couple of late, obviously, too.” Martin Nečas and Teuvo Teräväinen also scored for the Hurricanes, giving them a 2-0 advantage after two periods. After the Bruins tied it, Martinook took a feed from Nečas and wristed the puck through Linus Ullmark’s legs. “They definitely had the momentum,” Nečas said. “It was good to kind of slow the game down a little bit because they were buzzing, and just take it back.” Boston cut the margin to one when Trent Frederic fought for the puck behind the net and then slid it across the slot to Marchand. The same line delivered eight minutes into the third when Marchand poked the rebound of Charlie Coyle’s shot through Martin’s legs to tie it. Marchand has 395 goals — all with Boston. Bourque, the Hall of Fame defenseman and five-time Norris Trophy winner, scored 395 of his 410 career goals with the Bruins. Ullmark made 30 saves for Boston in his second start since missing 10 days with a lower-body injury.
Brewin Flames
Game # 48 Bos 3 Sens 2 OT Brad Marchand scores in overtime as Bruins beat Senators 3-2 ByAP Updated: Jan 25, 2024, 11:46 pm OTTAWA, Ontario -- — Brad Marchand scored at 1:48 of overtime and the Boston Bruins beat the Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Thursday night. The goal was Marchand's 396th — the fifth in four games — and moved him past Ray Bourque and into fifth all-time with the Bruins. “It’s special,” the 35-year-old Marchand said. “I try not to think too much about it, but it’s special. I never thought my career would come this far and some of the things that have gone on would have happened. “I’ve been extremely fortunate and very lucky to be part of a group that’s had a lot of success and a lot of phenomenal guys to learn from.” It was also Marchand's 19th career overtime goal, tying him with Jaromir Jagr for the third in NHL history, behind Alex Ovechkin (26) and Sidney Crosby (20). David Pastrnak and Trent Frederic also scored for the Atlantic Division- and Eastern Conference-leading Bruins. Jeremy Swayman stopped 35 shots. “I think the biggest thing is finishing off a game that looked like an uphill battle sometimes,” Swayman said. “And it’s really special to get a back-to-back and finish it in overtime, so huge congrats to (Marchand) passing some pretty great names. So really, really good feel-good win for us.” Thomas Chabot and Vladimir Tarasenko scored for the Senators. Joonas Korpisalo made 20 saves. Ottawa was trailing 2-1 when Josh Norris thought he had tied the game at 13:18 of the third. But, officials determined a hand pass was involved. The Senators did come back to tie the game at 2-all with a power-play goal at 16:42, when Tarasenko sent a shot past Swayman. Leading 1-0 after one period, Boston extended its advantage at 8:19 of the second when Frederic beat Korpisalo high to the blocker side. The Senators cut the lead to one with a late power-play goal. Drake Batherson made a backhand pass to Chabot, who snapped a shot past Swayman for his second of the season. “Drake (Batherson) did 99 percent of the job,” said Tarasenko. “He made a very good screen and the goalie can’t see and left the corner open.” The goal resulted in a scrum behind the net, and Chabot got punched by Charlie McAvoy, triggering a larger scrum and roughing penalties assessed to McAvoy, Wotherspoon, Tim Stuzle, with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to Batherson. Bruins coach Jim Montgomery wasn’t overly impressed with the discrepancy in power plays. “I don’t think we dodged a bullet; I think we took about eight bullets,” said Montgomery. “They had six power plays we had one. That is one-sided.” The Bruins were largely outplayed in the first, but still held a one-goal lead after the opening 20 minutes. Ottawa failed to capitalize on its two power-play chances, while Boston scored three seconds into its power play at 18:36 of the first. Pastrnak beat Korpisalo from just inside the blue line on the Bruins' third shot of the period. Senators forward Shane Pinto made his home debut after serving a 41-game suspension for gambling. Pinto had returned to action and picked up a point in a win at Philadelphia on Sunday.
Brewin Flames
Game # 49 Bos 6 Flyers 2 Pastrnak leads the Bruins to a 6-2 rout of the Flyers ByAP Updated: Jan 27, 2024, 04:29 pm PHILADELPHIA -- — David Pastrnak had two goals and an assist, James van Riemsdyk had a goal and an assist and the Boston Bruins routed the Philadelphia Flyers 6-2 on Saturday in the final game for both teams before the NHL All-Star break. Charlie McAvoy, Danton Heinen and Charlie Coyle also scored for Boston, which has won seven of eight. The Atlantic Division-leading Bruins entered play tied with Vancouver for the most points in the NHL. They now have 71. Linus Ullmark made 35 saves, and Pavel Zacha added two assists for Boston. “Amazing,” Pastrnak said of the finish to the first half of the season. “We were talking about it a lot to make sure we finished strong before the break.” Tyson Foerster scored both goals for Philadelphia, which lost its fifth game in a row. Owen Tippett (lower body) missed his fourth straight game one day after signing an 8-year, $49.6 million extension. The Flyers also were without goalie Carter Hart, who took an indefinite leave of absence from the team on Tuesday. Sam Ersson was pulled Saturday after allowing four goals on 14 shots in the first period. Cal Petersen replaced him to start the second period and made 12 saves. “You have some good weeks, and you have some struggles,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said. "We’re having some struggles now. We’ve just got to try to put our head down and see if we can solve some problems and get better.” Pastrnak, who will play in his fourth All-Star Game, continued his dominance of the Flyers. He has 11 goals and six assists during a seven-game point streak against Philadelphia and 42 points in 29 career games versus the Flyers. Pastrnak loves coming to Philly, where the NHL draft was held in 2014 when the Bruins selected him No. 25 overall. “This is where my dream started, so always fun for me to come back to this building," he said. "Obviously, it’s mentally positive coming in here.” The game was scoreless until Pastrnak converted on a wrist shot with 5:51 left in the first, starting a flurry of four goals in 4:14. McAvoy netted his seventh 1:37 later from the side of the crease after a cross-ice setup from Zacha. Heinen made it 3-0 when he scored on a deflection of Brandon Carlo’s shot from long range. Officials confirmed the goal after video review showed that Heinen did not play the puck with a high stick. Pastrnak recorded his second of the contest and team-leading 33rd goal with 1:37 left from in front to make it 4-0. “They score the first one after we have three or four really good chances, and I just think it affected us,” Tortorella said. The Bruins continued where they left off in the first period after the intermission when van Riemsdyk scored 1:15 into the second on an assist from Pastrnak’s pass from behind the net to make it a five-goal lead. The assist upped Pastrank’s team-best points total to 72. “He’s a game-breaker, right?" Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. "And he gives us an advantage that, in close games, we can win them.” Foerster got Philadelphia on the board with his first of the game with 4:37 left in the period when his wrist shot from close range went through the pads of Ullmark. He notched his second with 8:32 to play. Joining Pastrnak at the All-Star Game in Toronto will be Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman, who is making his first appearance after going 16-3-7 with a 2.30 goals-against average and .924 save percentage in 27 games. Travis Konecny, who leads Philadelphia in goals (22) and points (42), will represent the Flyers in his second appearance.
Brewin Flames
Game # 50 Bos 1 Flames 4 Andrei Kuzmenko scores in his Calgary debut as the Flames beat the listless Bruins 4-1 Andrei Kuzmenko puts in his first goal with the Flames after being part of the Elias Lindholm trade package. ByAP Updated: Feb 6, 2024, 11:03 pm BOSTON -- — Andrei Kuzmenko scored in his Calgary debut, Nazem Kadri had three assists and the Flames beat the Boston Bruins 4-1 on Tuesday night. Jonathan Huberdeau had a goal and two assists and Connor Zary also scored for the Flames, who held Atlantic Division- and Eastern Conference-leading Boston to five shots in the second period in a listless return from the All-Star break for the Bruins. “One of our best of the year, obviously against a great team in a tough building," Kadri said. “I’m very proud of how we rallied and how we responded after some adversity and came up with a big two points.” Jacob Markstrom stopped 21 shots for Calgary. Boston native Noah Hanifin added a late goal for the Flames. Pavel Zacha scored on a power play early in the third period for the Bruins, who opened a seven-game homestand with a flat performance. “Physical. Mental. Both," Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy said when asked about Boston's many mistakes. ”We just weren’t good enough tonight. Obviously practice didn’t translate and they outplayed us." David Pastrnak assisted on Zacha’s goal, and Jeremy Swayman finished with 25 saves for Boston. “Every single night in this league can be a humbling experience, so I don’t think I’m going to look too far into it to be honest,” McAvoy said. “We’re the first place team in our conference and we’re going to get everyone’s best, even more so than we did before. So this is good for us — to know what to expect from everybody.” Kuzmenko joined the Flames less than a week earlier, arriving in a package deal from Vancouver in exchange for Elias Lindholm. It didn't take Kuzmenko long make an impact. He put the Flames up 1-0 on a power-play goal 4:01 into the game on a wrist shot off a centering pass from Huberdeau. The goal came just 31 seconds after Brandon Carlo was called for holding Kadri, who also picked up an assist on the play. Kadri added another assist nine minutes later after forcing a Bruins turnover deep in their own zone and taking it the other way, feeding a quick pass to Zara as he streaked in on Swayman and beat him with a backhand shot. “This was one of our better games this year,” Calgary coach Ryan Huska said. “I think it was a really good team game where the guys came to play the right way.” The Flames played the final 44 minutes down a forward after second-line winger Martin Pospisil leveled Boston captain Brad Marchand during a scrum in front of Calgary’s net with four minutes left in the opening period. Marchand got a two-minute minor for slashing, while Pospisil received a five-minute major and game misconduct for cross-checking. Although Boston entered the second period with a full minute left on the major penalty to Pospisil, Calgary dominated the period and outshot Boston 9-5. Boston didn’t get another power-play opportunity until early in the third, when Braydon Pachal went off for hooking at 2:48 and MacKenzie Weegar received a double-minor for high-sticking Marchand in the Flames’ zone less than a minute later. Boston capitalized on the 5-on-3 when Pavel Zacha scored on a crossing pass from Pastrnak with 15:46 remaining, cutting the margin to 2-1. Huberdeau, who was playing in his 799th career game, pushed the lead back to two goals a couple minutes later when he forced a turnover and fired a quick wrist shot past Swayman. “Obviously a huge goal by Hubey — what a shot. He’s got to use that more often,” Kadri said. “I don’t think we ever really got deflated. We understood we were controlling most parts of the game and we just had to stay with it.”
Brewin Flames
Game # 51 Bos 4 Van 0 Marchand and Heinen score short-handed, Bruins blank Canucks 4-0 in matchup of NHL’s top 2 teams Morgan Geekie and Pavel Zacha score two goals in 15 seconds as the Bruins take a 4-0 lead over the Canucks. ByAP Updated: Feb 8, 2024, 10:50 pm BOSTON -- — Brad Marchand and Danton Heinen scored short-handed in the first period, and the Boston Bruins beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 on Thursday night in a matchup of the NHL’s top two teams. Linus Ullmark stopped 17 shots for his first shutout of the season. Morgan Geekie and Pavel Zacha also scored, and Charlie Coyle set up both short-handed goals as the Bruins bounced back from a 4-1 loss to Calgary at home Tuesday. “In our minds it feels like we've been struggling in our PK," Ullmark said. “We haven't lived up to our standards. It was also something we talked about before the game. It's time to really buy in and do the right things, and do them properly. That's what they did.” It was the eighth victory in 10 games for Boston, which tied Vancouver atop the league standings with 73 points. Last season, Boston captured the Presidents' Trophy with NHL records for points (135) and wins (65). But the Bruins were eliminated by Florida in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. “Our PK hasn’t been up to par with where we were this year,” Coyle said. “That’s something we want to get better at.” Thatcher Demko made 21 saves for the Canucks, but his nine-game winning streak was snapped. Vancouver had won 10 of 12, with one loss coming in overtime and the other in a shootout. “I thought I maybe (could) have helped the team out in some of their chances a little better,” Demko said. “I didn't think it was a 4-0 game, necessarily. I think there's some things we can pick out to build on.” With teammate Jakub Lauko in the penalty box for holding on the game’s opening shift, Coyle stole a clearing pass along the boards and sent a shot at Demko. Marchand, positioned at the edge of the crease, scored off the rebound 32 seconds in for his 25th goal. Late in the first period, Coyle flipped a pass to a breaking Heinen, who split a pair of Canucks players — speeding past Elias Pettersson — before firing a wrister past Demko’s stick. “The guy was fast and he made a good play to score,” Pettersson. In the second, Boston all but put it away with two goals in the opening 49 seconds. On the first, David Pastrnak’s stick shattered on his one-timer from just inside the blue line, with the blade sailing like a boomerang over near the left circle. The puck went toward the net and, as he was falling to the ice, Geekie redirected it with his stick before Vancouver defenseman Tyler Myers mishandled the rebound, knocking it into his own net. “He's a former baseball player. He takes a lot of pride in his baseball,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said of Geekie. “He'd rather had been a better baseball player than a hockey player. He's just more talented in hockey. I think we saw his hand-eye coordination there.” Zacha took a pass from James van Riemsdyk, cut in alone and fired a forehand past Demko’s stick just 15 seconds after Heinen's goal. It was a relatively easy night for Ullmark in his seventh career shutout even though Vancouver came in averaging an NHL-best 3.78 goals per game. The teams meet again in Vancouver on Feb. 24. “Obviously a huge goal by Hubey — what a shot. He’s got to use that more often,” Kadri said. “I don’t think we ever really got deflated. We understood we were controlling most parts of the game and we just had to stay with it.”
Brewin Flames
Game # 52 Bos 0 Caps 3 Oshie scores as Caps end skid with 3-0 win over Bruins; Ovechkin gets empty netter to pass Gretzky ByAP Updated: Feb 10, 2024, 07:31 pm BOSTON -- — T.J. Oshie scored his 299th career goal, Charlie Lindgren stopped 18 shots for his third shutout of the season and the Washington Capitals snapped a six-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over the Boston Bruins on Saturday. Alex Ovechkin scored his 57th career empty-net goal with 27 seconds remaining to pass Wayne Gretzky for the most in NHL history. Dylan Strome also scored for the Capitals, who won for the first time since beating St. Louis 5-2 on Jan. 18. “Our most complete game of the year, hands down, start to finish. In all the different areas we needed to be dialed in, we were," Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said. “Our structure. We were so connected in everything we did in all three zones, it was impressive from our group today.” Lindgren wasn’t tested much as the Capitals dominated the first two periods, outshooting the Bruins 23-7 through the first 40 minutes and finishing with a 28-18 shot advantage. “This win tonight, this shutout, all the credit in the world goes to the guys in front of me," Lindgren said. “I thought the effort right from the drop of the puck start to finish was incredible. If we play that way, we’re a playoff hockey team. There’s no doubt about it.” Jeremy Swayman stopped 25 shots for the Bruins, who lost for the third time in their last four home games. Boston fans booed at the end of the second period as the Bruins made their way to the locker room, down 1-0 after being outplayed through two periods. The boos continued in the third and got louder when Strome’s 20th goal of the season 3:24 into the period put Washington up 2-0. “They can cheer us if they like what they see. They can boo if they don’t,” Bruins captain Brad Marchand said. “So that’s up to them. Obviously we know we have a very passionate sports city and very passionate fans and they expect us to win every game. It’s not going to happen, but they’ve got to see the effort and obviously they didn’t like it tonight.” Lindgren stopped Jake DeBrusk with a glove save from just outside the net early in a power-play opportunity for Boston with about seven minutes remaining. With Boston pushing for a goal, Washington's Connor McMichael got free for a short-handed breakaway but couldn't beat Swayman. “Swayman made a few huge saves and we just couldn’t break through,” Carbery said. “That’s where we need to play so mentally disciplined with everything that we do and just believe it will come. We did a phenomenal job of sticking with it tonight.” Max Pacioretty went to the ice late in the first after taking a stick to the left wrist from Boston defenseman Matt Grzelcyk, who received a major penalty and game misconduct for spearing. Officials reviewed video of the play before upholding the call. Pacioretty went to the locker room for the remainder of the period but was back for the start of the second, setting up the game’s first goal with a pass from behind the net to Oshie for a wrist shot that deflected in off Swayman’s left pad. Washington outshot the Bruins 15-4 in the first period but neither team scored. Swayman came up with two big saves on Ovechkin, gloving a shot with about 4:30 left in the period and getting his left pad on another early in the major penalty to Grzelcyk . With his goal, Oshie passed Bobby Carpenter for the ninth-most in franchise history. A hooking penalty to Ovechkin gave Boston one more power-play chance late in the third but Lindgren was there again with a glove save on a one-timer by Brad Marchand after a crossing pass from David Pastrnak. Ovechkin, who also had an assist, had goals in his previous three games and was running out of time to extend the streak before coming out of the penalty box to an empty Boston net. Ovechkin now has 834 career goals, 60 short of tying Gretzky's mark of 894 for the most in NHL history. After beating the top team in the Eastern Conference, the Capitals get the best in the Western Conference on Sunday at home against the Vancouver Canucks. “It’s something to build off of with how much we’ve been struggling,” Carbery said. Brewin Flames
Game # 53 Bos 2 Bolts 3 Vasilevskiy stops 36 shots as Lightning beat Bruins 3-2 in Marchand's 1,000th game ByAP Updated: Feb 13, 2024, 10:56 pm BOSTON -- — Brad Marchand almost had the perfect ending for his 1,000th career NHL game. The Bruins captain had two assists in regulation and almost scored the game-winner in overtime, but Andrei Vasilevskiy deflected the shot high and then stopped all three Boston attempts in the shootout to deliver a 3-2 victory for Tampa Bay on Tuesday night. “He made an incredible save. That’s why he’s one of the top goalies in the league,” Marchand said. “I thought I put it in a great spot to get it, but he showed why he’s one of the best.” Vasilevskiy stopped 36 shots and Brayden Point scored the only goal of the shootout for Tampa Bay. Nikita Kucherov and Erik Cernak scored early to spot the Lightning a 2-0 lead just 21 minutes into the game. Charlie McAvoy and James van Riemsdyk scored for the reigning Presidents Trophy-winning Bruins, who have the best record in the Eastern Conference despite losing three of their last four games. Linus Ullmark stopped 23 shots for Boston, but he knocked Point’s shot into the net with his stick after deflecting it in the air with his glove. Marchand is the eighth player in franchise history to reach the milestone, and the Bruins said they will honor him with a ceremony before Monday’s game against Dallas. He confessed to getting emotional during the national anthem. “I really was trying to try to block it out, for the most part,” he said. “But those moments, things that happened through the night, you do try to embrace them.” The achievement was recognized with a video during a first-period break. The crowd gave Marchand a standing ovation, both teams tapped their sticks, and even referee Tom Chmielewski clapped for the Bruins captain’s milestone. “Anytime you see a guy play a thousand games, that’s an incredible milestone for anybody,” Point said. “He plays hard, and he’s won, he’s played Olympics and World Cups and all those things. So, phenomenal player, and he’s definitely got a lot of respect around the league, that’s for sure.” The Lightning took the lead three minutes into the game when Ullmark made the initial save on Cernak’s shot, drawing a whistle. After the puck trickled through the goalie’s pads, McAvoy took a swipe at it to keep it out — but missed — and it continued on. Replays showed it barely cleared the goal line, and since it was continuous action, the goal counted. Tampa Bay made it 2-0 just a minute into the second when Kucherov cleaned up a rebound on a power play and slammed it past Ullmark. But the Bruins cut the deficit to one goal just 58 seconds later when McAvoy’s wrister from the point got past Vasilevskiy. Boston tied it later in the second when Ullmark was off for a delayed penalty and van Riemsdyk poked the rebound of Marchand’s shot through the goalie’s legs. Brewin Flames
Game # 54 Bos 1 Seattle 4 Beniers leads Kraken to 4-1 victory over sputtering Bruins ByAP Updated: Feb 15, 2024, 10:47 pm BOSTON -- — Matty Beniers had a goal and two assists as the Seattle Kraken concluded a five-game road trip with a 4-1 win over the Eastern Conference-leading Boston Bruins on Thursday night. Jordan Eberle, Eeli Tolvanen and Jared McCann also scored for Seattle. Joey Daccord stopped 36 shots to snap his three-game losing streak. “Unreal. He’s made huge saves every night he’s been between the pipes,” Beniers said. It was a thrilling experience for Daccord, who grew up in Boston. “Real special night,” he said. “Trying to put everything into perspective. I grew up a Boston sports fan. It was pretty emotional for me.” Boston has dropped three straight and four of five, with all the defeats coming at home. David Pastrnak scored for the Bruins, and Jeremy Swayman made 22 saves. The sputtering Bruins fell into a tie with Florida atop the Atlantic Division standings, with the Metropolitan Division-leading New York Rangers one point behind them for most in the Eastern Conference. The Bruins took the lead five minutes into the game when Pastrnak fired a shot on Daccord and then drove home the rebound for his 34th goal of the season. A high-sticking penalty on Boston resulted in Seattle getting the equalizer at 10:49 of the first period as Eberle’s persistence paid off after Swayman made the initial stop. Boston hit two posts and James van Riemsdyk missed an open net in the second. That frustration was magnified when the Kraken capitalized on a 3-on-1 break late in the period as Tolvanen fired in a one-timer. Beniers was credited with his second assist of the night. “We're not getting the results right now, but sometimes you go through this during the season. We hit some posts. Those things happen,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. “We’re going to stick together and keep grinding and keep working.” Bruins forward Charlie Coyle had a good look to tie it but his backhand bid hit the post two minutes into the third. The deficit grew to two goals when Beniers — a Massachusetts native — beat Swayman on a rush from the left side. “Boston kids love coming home to Boston,” Beniers said with a smile. “I know (Daccord) was pumped up. I was pumped up. It was fun to get the win.” The Bruins needed to kill off a penalty before getting an extra skater for a 6-on-5 advantage with 1:30 remaining, but Seattle found the empty net as McCann made it four goals for the Kraken’s top line. Boston went 0 for 2 on the power play and is 0 for 15 in a four-game drought. “I think we do a good job of looking at the game as a whole. (Montgomery) and the coaches do a good job of being encouraging in these moments,” Coyle said. “It hasn’t gone our way as much as we would have liked since coming back from the (All-Star) break. Overall, we’re still building our game and what our mission is. There’s no reason to get discouraged by any means.”

Clarke committed a hooking penalty at 2:24 of overtime to give Boston a power play, but he took a pass from Phillip Danault and scored on a breakaway after exiting the penalty box. Anze Kopitar tied it 4-4 on a tip-in at 18:25 of the third period on the power play with goalie David Rittich pulled for an extra attacker. Pierre-Luc Dubois had two assists, and Rittich made 28 saves for the Kings (26-16-10), who have won four of their past five games. James van Riemsdyk had two goals and an assist, and Linus Ullmark made 30 saves for the Bruins (32-12-11), who have lost four in a row (0-2-2). Van Riemsdyk gave Boston a 1-0 lead at 8:03 of the first period, knocking in a loose puck in front. Matt Roy tied it 1-1 at 11:02, banking the puck off Ullmark’s leg and in from the left side. Van Riemsdyk gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead when he backhanded a rebound past Rittich on the power play at 14:45. Anthony Richard’s first goal with Boston pushed it to 3-1 at 13:04 of the second period, but Vladislav Gavrikov cut it to 3-2 at 16:38 with a shot from the point. Alex Laferriere tied it 3-3 at 5:51 of the third period on a scramble in front. Trent Frederic gave the Bruins a 4-3 lead from the slot at 7:12. Jesper Boqvist had a goal and an assist for Boston (33-12-11), McAvoy had two assists, and Justin Brazeau and David Pastrnak scored. Swayman made eight saves on nine attempts in the shootout as the Bruins ended a four-game skid (0-2-2). Wyatt Johnston, Ryan Suter and Esa Lindell scored for Dallas (34-14-8), which has lost two in a row (0-0-2) after winning the previous three. Jake Oettinger made 25 saves and stopped seven of nine shots in the shootout. Pastrnak tied the game 3-3 at 18:15. With Swayman out for an extra attacker, McAvoy passed across the zone to Pastrnak, who scored on a one-timer from the left face-off circle. Boqvist gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 4:01 of the first period, scoring in front off Anthony Richard’s centering pass. Johnston tied it 1-1 at 11:14 when he redirected Thomas Harley's shot. The forward has six points (three goals, three assists) during a three-game point streak. Suter gave the Stars a 2-1 lead at 1:04 of the second period on a shot from the left face-off circle. The Bruins tied it 2-2 28 seconds later, when Brazeau scored from in front at 1:32. It was the forward's first NHL goal in his first game. He had signed two-year, two-way contract earlier Monday. Lindell gave the Stars a 3-2 lead at 10:44 of the third period, keeping the puck on a 2-on-1 rush and scoring from the right side.
Brewin Flames
Game # 57 Bos 6 EDM 5 OT Charlie McAvoy scores in overtime, Bruins edge Oilers 6-5 Charlie McAvoy skates around the Oilers in overtime to tap in the game-winning goal. ByAP Updated: Feb 22, 2024, 02:39 am EDMONTON, Alberta -- — Charlie McAvoy scored in overtime to lift Boston to a 6-5 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night after the Bruins blew a three-goal lead. McAvoy sent a backhand past Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner 3:10 into the extra period that started with Edmonton on the power play. Boston gave up leads of 4-1 and 5-4 in the game. “I just loved the way we kept forging ahead. We didn’t worry about what happened positively or negatively,” Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery said. “I thought we continued to play. Obviously they had a great push by a great team in the third period and it kind of snowballed, but we went right back to work afterwards. When they made it 4-4, the next four minutes I thought we controlled the game and started to push back." Morgan Geekie, Brad Marchand, Trent Frederic, Jake DeBrusk and David Pastrnak also scored for the Bruins, who had lost four straight before winning their last two. Mason Lohrei had three assists and Jeremy Swayman made 37 saves. “I think that’s an identity of ours,” Swayman said. “It was not exactly how we drew it up, but it was really special to get those two points and the way we did it through adversity and their push, I think that’s really something special for our group moving forward.” Warren Foegele had a pair of goals and Mattias Janmark, Corey Perry and Zach Hyman also scored for the Oilers, who had won eight in a row at home. Skinner stopped 30 shots. “You are happy with the way you battled back from down 4-1 to a really good team, to be able to come back twice and earn a point says a lot about our team and how it faces adversity,” Hyman said. “But at the same time you don’t want to put yourselves in that position. Since we have been back (from the All-Star break) we have put ourselves in that position too often and we have to learn to play consistently throughout the whole game again.” Boston got a power-play goal just 2:34 into the opening period as Geekie picked the top corner with a long shot. The Oilers tied the game with 8:20 to play in the first as Connor McDavid tipped a puck off a defender’s stick off the boards to Foegele who drove hard to the net before slipping a backhand past Swayman. McDavid’s assist extended his home point streak to 20 games. The Bruins surged back in front just 25 seconds into the second period as Edmonton coughed up the puck and Marchand beat Skinner to the short side. Frederic redirected in Jesper Boqvist's shot just four minutes later for a two-goal lead. DeBrusk made it 4-1 with six minutes left in the second, before Foegele scored his second a minute and a half later to make it 4-2 after two. Janmark and Perry scored 1:10 apart in the third tie to it at 4. Boston regained the lead with 7:19 left when Pastrnak scored his 36th of the season, but Edmonton tied it again on Zach Hyman's goal just 42 seconds later. Brewin Flames
Game # 58 Bos 2 Flames 3 OT Kadri pots the winner in overtime, Flames edge Bruins 3-2 ByAP Updated: Feb 23, 2024, 02:01 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Nazem Kadri scored an unsassisted goal 3:56 into overtime to lead the Calgary Flames to a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. Kadri took the puck up ice on a 3-on-1 and fired a shot into the far corner past Linus Ullmark just seconds after Jakob Markstrom stopped David Pastrnak at the other end. “I was exhausted by the end of that one, just an absolute track meet,” Kadri said. “Nice to come out on the proper side of that one. Marky made some great saves for us. Gave us the opportunity to go cash in.” Oliver Kylington and Martin Pospisil also scored for Calgary. Markstrom made 32 saves for the Flames, who have won two in a row on the heels of a three-game losing skid. Kadri leads the Flames with 50 points (20 goals, 30 assists), just six shy of his production last year, his first with Calgary. “He’s one of those guys that hates to lose more than he likes to win,” said Flames coach Ryan Huska. “So that’s why I think you see him elevate his play.” Charlie Coyle scored both goals for Boston, which extended its road point streak to 11 games (7-0-4). “We had chances to end the game. That’s hockey. It’s an inch or two there and it’s a different story and we’re feeling great about our game,” Coyle said. Ullmark stopped 27 shots. “We didn’t come out the way we wanted to,” he said. “We knew what needed to be done to be successful out there and we showed that in the second and the third and we battled back and stuck with it and got a point out of it.” The Bruins trailed 2-1 after two periods but took just 2:33 to tie it in the third when Coyle raced past a flat-footed MacKenzie Weegar and swooped in alone on Markstrom to score on a backhand-to-forehand move. Kylington opened the scoring at 12:55 of the first when he scored for the second straight game, taking a pass from Andrei Kuzmenko and whipping a shot under Ullmark’s arm. Coyle tied it at 18:41, capitalizing on a blunder by Markstrom. After racing out of his net to clear a puck, he whiffed on it and Coyle fired in his 19th goal of the season. But 42 seconds later, Calgary retook the lead on Pospisil’s goal. Kadri and Connor Zary combined to get the puck in front, but after Ullmark made the initial stop, Pospisil was there to poke the loose puck in. Boston carried the play in the second period outshooting Calgary 11-5, but neither team could score with both goaltenders making big stops. Markstrom’s 211th career win moves him past Tommy Salo into second place for most wins by a Swedish-born goaltender, with Henrik Lundqvist atop the list at 459. “He’s the backbone,” said Kadri. “That’s what all great teams have, they have a guy in the crease that can make some timely saves and to win a championship, to win playoff games, to win playoff series, you need timely saves and you need timely goals and we saw both those tonight.” After a stretch of sustained pressure, Kuzmenko got a good look from the top of the faceoff circle, but Ullmark made a glove save. Shortly after, and with the Bruins on the power play, Pavel Zacha was stopped twice in succession, first on his deflection of Charlie McAvoy’s point shot, then on the rebound. With defenseman Matt Grzelcyk out with a foot injury, Boston inserted veteran defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk into the lineup and called up Ian Mitchell from the American Hockey League’s Providence Bruins. Brewin Flames
Game #59 Bos 2 Van 3 OT Boeser scores 2 to lead Canucks to 3-2 overtime win over Bruins ByAP Updated: Feb 25, 2024, 12:13 am VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- — Brock Boeser scored his second goal of the game on a power play at 1:34 of overtime to rally the Vancouver Canucks to a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins on Saturday in a matchup of division leaders. Filip Hronek also scored for the Canucks, who came back from two goals down to snap a four-game losing streak. Thatcher Demko finished with 20 saves as Vancouver maintained the top overall spot in the NHL standings with 82 points.. “Maybe the last three, four games, the bench would have been a little different, slamming sticks and stuff,” Canucks coach Rick Tocchet said. “I didn’t see that tonight. There wasn’t frustration, even though we were down 2-0.” J.T. Miller had three assists to stretch his point streak to four games (five goals and four assists). “Millsy willed the game,” Tocchet said. “His third period was incredible.” On the winning goal during 4-on-3 play in the extra period, Boeser scored on a tip in front on Miller's shot 25 seconds after after Boston was whistled for too many men on the ice. Jesper Boqvist and Danton Heinen scored for Boston, which lost its second straight in overtime and is 2-1-4 in its last seven games. Jeremy Swayman had 36 saves. The Bruins are tied with the Rangers for tops in the Eastern Conference with 81 points, though New York has a game in hand. "My D-men did a great job and unfortunately it just comes down to one shot, right?” Swayman said. “A lot of great positives came from it, and the d-men boxing guys out and letting me have let a clear look at it was a really big thing for us.” The Bruins went 0 for 4 on the power play, while the Canucks were 0 for 1 until Boeser’s overtime tally snapped a 1-for-29 stretch. Both goalies stood tall in a scoreless first period, where the Bruins outshot the Canucks 10-9. David Pastrnak led the way with three shots for Boston, including a point-blank power-play chance from the left faceoff circle late in the period. In the second period, the Bruins built a 2-0 lead. Boqvist opened the scoring at 5:27 as he broke in alone and laid a sweet deke on Demko for his third of the season. Just under six minutes later, Heinen drove to the net and backhanded a loose puck out of the crease and over the goal line to double the lead. The Canucks spoiled Swayman’s shutout bid with 7:11 remaining in the third as Boeser fired a wrister to the short side. Then, with Demko on the bench for the extra attacker, Hronek fired a shot from the blue line to tie it with 1:11 remaining. Miller felt his team delivered a good effort that would have stood up, regardless of the outcome. “I feel like we outplayed one of the best teams in the league today for 60 straight minutes, even though we were losing,” Miller said. “Let’s not make it more than it is, it’s just a hockey game in February. But timing-wise, it feels good, just for the way that it’s been going a little bit lately.” Defenseman Matt Grzelcyk returned to the Boston lineup after missing one game with a lower-body injury. Vancouver forward Dakota Joshua missed his sixth game with a broken hand.
Brewin Flames
Game # 60 Bos 3 Kraken 4 Pastrnak nets hat trick but Kraken top Bruins 4-3 in shootout ByAP Updated: Feb 27, 2024, 02:22 am SEATTLE -- — Kailer Yamamoto scored the only goal in a shootout and the Seattle Kraken overcame David Pastrnak's hat trick to beat the Boston Bruins 4-3 on Monday night. Jordan Eberle, Vince Dunn and Oliver Bjorkstrand scored for Seattle, which twice came from behind to tie the game. Philipp Grubauer denied all three Bruins shootout attempts, the last of which was by Pastrnak. “He came in way slower than in the game,” Grubauer said. “So (he had) a little bit more time to make a move in the shootout. But this guy has so many tricks in the bag. You don’t expect them to do the same thing twice.” It was Boston’s sixth straight game that went beyond regulation time. By earning one point, the Bruins (34-12-14) tied idle Vancouver for most points in the NHL at 82. After dropping the final three games on a 1-0-3 road trip, Boston is 2-2-5 in its past nine overall. “If you look at the points, it’s a good trip. But doesn’t feel like it,” said Pastrnak, who tied the score late in the third period. “You get five out of eight points and every game was overtime. It’s a tough way to end it. We could have got the win, but unfortunately we didn’t. We played a great game, then in the third period we kind of let them push. You must expect good teams will make a push and refocus. It took us until almost too late in the third period to make the push back.” Grubauer made 29 saves for the Kraken. He got the start after replacing Joey Daccord early in the second period of Saturday’s 5-2 home loss to Minnesota. Linus Ullmark stopped 23 shots for Boston. Yamamoto was up first in the shootout and beat Ullmark with a forehand shot. Grubauer subsequently made saves on Charlie Coyle, Charlie McAvoy and Pastrnak. Pastrnak put the Bruins on the board at 5:53 of the first period. Kevin Shattenkirk gained the puck deep in his own end and sent it ahead to Pastrnak, who was breaking down the middle of the ice ahead of Seattle defenders Will Borgen and Jamie Oleksiak. Pastrnak went 1-on-1 against Grubauer and launched the puck over his glove, high into the net. Pastrnak’s 37th goal of the season was his 700th career point. He is the 10th Bruins player to reach that milestone. "You get a few and you want to score more and more,” Pastrnak said. “I’ll definitely have to do some research on how to score more.” Eberle tied it on a power play at 4:45 of the second with his 14th of the season. Pastrnak put Boston back on top at 17:08. Dunn’s 10th goal tied it again at 5:29 of the third. Seattle had 14 shots on goal in the third — two more than in the first two periods combined. “The push at the start of the third period was really important,” Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. “And you can see the determination in our guys right away from the drop of the puck, and that paid off for us.” Bjorkstrand gave Seattle a 3-2 lead with 5:30 left in the third when he redirected a shot by Alex Wennberg past Ullmark for his 14th goal. That came after the Bruins thought they had snapped the 2-all tie on an apparent goal by Morgan Geekie with 9:14 to go. But the Kraken won a replay challenge for goaltender interference. Pastrnak tied it at 3 on a power play with 2:52 left in regulation.
Brewin Flames
Game # 61 Bos 5 Vegas 4 Lohrei scores winner, Geekie nets hat trick, Bruins end 3-game slide with 5-4 win over Vegas ByAP Updated: Feb 29, 2024, 10:52 pm BOSTON -- — Mason Lohrei scored the winning goal on the power play with less than five minutes to go, Morgan Geekie had his first NHL hat trick, and the Boston Bruins snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday night. Lohrei took a feed from Kevin Shattenkirk and fired a one-timer from inside the right circle and the Bruins held on after surrendering leads of 3-0 and 4-2. “My mindset was to try and get a puck toward the net off the draw,” Lohrei said. “(Shattenkirk) walked the line and took a peek and saw no one was there in front to block it and let it loose. It’s been a struggle lately.” Jesper Boqvist also scored for Boston, which won for just the second time in regulation in February, while David Pastrnak had two assists to help complete a season sweep of the defending Stanley Cup champion. Jeremy Swayman had 32 saves. Paul Cotter, Alex Pietrangelo, Michael Amadio and Chandler Stephenson scored for the Golden Knights and Adin Hill finished with 27 saves. Geekie scored twice during Boston’s three-goal outburst that covered 2:30 of the first period. The forward was the recipient of a spot-on pass from Trent Frederic before going top shelf for the game’s first goal at 14:34. The scoring barrage continued with Boqvist beating Hill on the blocker side and Geekie finishing a 3-on-2 break. The script flipped in the second as Vegas scored three times to make it a one-goal game heading into the third. Cotter swatted the puck past Swayman to get the Golden Knights on the board before Pietrangelo cut Boston’s lead to 3-2. Geekie’s third goal restored Boston’s two-goal cushion, when he redirected Pastrnak's shot. “It’s never something you think about coming into a game, but it’s always fun, especially when you get two points,” Geekie said about his hat trick. “It was good to close it out, especially after the last couple of games.” After the fans tossed hats on the ice, Vegas moved back to within one when Amadio popped in a loose puck to cap off a productive middle period that gave the visitors the momentum. With Vegas looking to kill off Boston’s first power-play chance of the game, Stephenson took advantage of some confusion on the Bruins’ part near the blue line. His short-handed breakaway goal tied the game at 4-all with 15 minutes remaining. “Loose puck, saw a guy was coming over my shoulder. Tried to keep it away. Done that move a few times and it worked that time,” Stephenson said. Boston was in a 4-for-36 slump on the power play before Lohrei’s tally that gave Jim Montgomery his 100th win as Boston’s head coach. “It means I coach a great roster in both years and I work for a great organization,” Montgomery said. “Part of our motivation was to beat the Stanley Cup champs.” The game was a homecoming for Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy, who led the Bruins for five seasons and took the franchise to the 2019 Stanley Cup Finals. Last year, he directed the Golden Knights to the Cup in his first season as the team’s head coach. “I expected it to be a close game. I didn’t expect it to be 5-4, but you never know in this league from night to night,” Cassidy said.

Brewin Flames
Game # 62 Bos 1 NYI 5 Kyle Palmieri's 1st-period hat trick leads Islanders past Bruins 5-1 Updated: Mar 2, 2024, 10:57 pm NEW YORK -- — Kyle Palmieri scored three times in the first period for his third career hat trick and the New York Islanders coasted to a 5-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Saturday night for their third straight win. Palmieri, who completed the natural hat trick just 12:19 in, had his first three-goal game with the Islanders and added an assist. Anders Lee had a goal and an assist, Brock Nelson also scored, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Bo Horvat each added two assists and Ilya Sorokin finished with 24 saves. “We were just executing well,” Palmieri said. “Tonight, we did a great job of breaking pucks out, being in the right spot and helping each other as a five-man unit.” Marc McLaughlin scored the lone goal for Boston and Linus Ullmark made 22 saves as the Bruins fell for the fourth time in five games (1-1-3). The Islanders took a 1-0 lead when Noah Dobson delivered a beautiful stretch pass to Palmieri, who spun around Bruins defenseman Mason Lohrei before sliding the puck between Ullmark’s legs at 3:32. Palmieri made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 5:27. Bo Horvat’s one-time shot from the slot created a rebound opportunity that the 33-year-old Palmieri capitalized on. Mathew Barzal also assisted. “Probably one of our better games," Nelson said. "Maybe the best of the season and in recent memory.” The Long Island native capped his hat trick when he buried another rebound in the slot. Palmieri left during the second period after taking a check from Parker Wotherspoon, but returned. Lee extended the Islanders' lead to 4-0 on the first shift of the second period with was his 16th of the season. It was only the Islanders captain's third goal since a scoring twice against Winnipeg on Jan. 16. “That chemistry and communication is there,” Lee said of the synergy between his linemates. “The playmaking was really high level tonight and we were able to put a few in.” Nelson put home his own rebound and collected his 28th of the season at 10:24 to make it 5-0. McLaughlin netted his first goal of the season and spoiled Sorokin’s shutout bid at 14:30 of the second. “They just seemed to get to every loose puck and win every battle tonight,” Bruins captain Brad Marchand said. “We didn’t have enough, our compete level wasn’t high enough, didn’t win enough one-on-one battles and it showed.”
Brewin Flames
Game # 63 Pavel Zacha scores 2 goals as the Boston Bruins beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 ByAP Updated: Mar 4, 2024, 11:53 pm TORONTO -- — Pavel Zacha scored twice to help the Boston Bruins beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 on Monday night. Jake DeBrusk had a goal and an assist for the Bruins (36-13-14), who had dropped four of five. Morgan Geekie also scored, and David Pastrnak had three assists. Jeremy Swayman made 32 saves for the Bruins, who are eight points ahead of the Leafs for second in the Atlantic Division. “Big momentum game for us,” Swayman said. “Really happy with our team’s effort.” John Tavares scored for the second straight game for Toronto (35-18-8). Joseph Woll stopped 23 shots. The teams play again Thursday in Boston. “A few too many mistakes,” Tavares said. “They just did a little better job around their net than we did around ours. “Playing against a team like Boston, and games down the stretch, those are big difference makers. Margins are very small.” The Bruins put together a solid start that included a couple of great short-handed chances on an early penalty kill. Geekie made it 1-0 at 9:43 when he redirected a Pastrnak pass for his 14th goal of the season. Denied by Woll on a breakaway 14 seconds into the game, Zacha made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 12:42. It was Zacha's first goal since Feb. 8 and No. 13 on the season. “Great first period and we didn’t stop playing,” Pastrnak said. “We bent, but we didn’t break.” Boston, which lost 5-1 to the New York Islanders on Saturday, opened a 3-0 lead in the second. DeBrusk, who had an assist on Zacha’s goal for his first point in six games, finished a rush for his 14th goal. Auston Matthews came close to adding to his NHL-best 53 goals on a Toronto man advantage late in the period, but his effort was cleared off the line by Boston defenseman Brandon Carlo. The Leafs got one back 3:52 into the third when Tavares ripped his 19th upstairs on Swayman. But Zacha responded at 10:35, making it 4-1 after Pastrnak threw the puck in front. “They played well most of the game,” Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly said. “We were streaky.” The Bruins were without shutdown defenseman Hampus Lindholm for a seventh straight game with an undisclosed injury. Brewin Flames
Game # 64 Leon Draisaitl scores twice as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Boston Bruins 2-1 in overtime ByAP Updated: Mar 5, 2024, 11:23 pm BOSTON -- — Leon Draisaitl scored 2:18 into overtime for his second goal of the game, and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Boston Bruins 2-1 on Tuesday night for their fifth consecutive victory. Draisaitl also tied it at 1 with 1:20 left in the third after Edmonton pulled Stuart Skinner for an extra skater. Draisaitl ended the game with a one-timer off a crossing pass from Connor McDavid. “I think it’s just a sign of maturity in our group. Obviously it’s a tough building to play in. I thought we stuck with it and stayed patient,” said Draisaitl, who has 32 goals so far this season. Edmonton limited Boston to five shots in the third period and none in overtime. Skinner made 25 saves for the Oilers, and Evan Bouchard had two assists. McDavid also had two assists, extending his point streak to 12 straight games. “At the end of the day you need one shot, one play to be made,” Draisaitl said. “We’ve got a lot of great players on our group.” The Bruins left the ice to another round of boos after falling to 19-7-6 at home. “We just have to find a way to win these games. I think there’s been a lot of them like this this season — we’re winning, then in the last five minutes we get scored on," said Pavel Zacha, who scored Boston’s only goal. "That’s something we have to get better at and win those games." Zacha scored his 15th goal 4:26 into the third period. He converted a one-time slap shot off a crossing pass from Danton Heinen. Bruins goaltender Linus Ullmark stopped 24 shots. “It felt like we had it. It slipped out of our hands that final minute,” Ullmark said. “I’ve got to take ownership of it as well.” Edmonton had a chance to win in in the final seconds of regulation, but Ullmark was able to stop Warren Foegele's rebound attempt. McDavid had a scoring opportunity late in the third on a shot he got on Ullmark despite being hounded by Trent Frederic. McDavid has two goals and 26 assists during his point streak. Skinner had to stop a dozen shots in the second, including a one-timer by David Pastrnak. Ullmark came up big for Boston during Edmonton’s first power-play chance, stopping McDavid on a rebound attempt just outside the crease early in the second. McDavid pounced on another loose puck late in the second and snapped off a quick shot that Ullmark swiped out of the air with his glove. Edmonton defenseman Vincent Desharnais said the atmosphere felt more like the playoffs than a regular-season game in early March. “It was tight. Not many shots, a lot of blocked shots, lots of hits,” Desharnais said. Boston forward James Van Riemsdyk played in his 1,000th career game, joining team captain Brad Marchand as the only active members of the Bruins to play in 1,000 games. The Bruins plan to honor Van Riemsdyk with a pregame ceremony March 16 when Boston hosts the Philadelphia Flyers, who selected Van Riemsdyk second overall in the 2007 draft.
