I don't think we need or can afford a superstar d-man. Jamie Mcbain types would fit in well without blowing the cap to smithereens.

Only if you sign him to an offer sheet...if the team trades you the player, that's a different story.

AND still exposes you to ANOTHER team signing Karlson to an offer sheet post trade (though you would get the picks).

Truthfully, if you want a player of Karlssons ilk, I would go after Cam Fowler from Anaheim on a trade basis. I would give the same deal: JVR + a 1st. They are similar players and on the same trajectory. You would have to pay through the nose at this point for Karlsson after his season, while Cam is an "unproven", with flashes (same as JVR).
