Hockey is drafting 18 year olds...every other sport drafts 21 year olds. Of course its easier to pick guys 3 years later in their development.

Actually, there is really only much of a disparity between the NFL and NHL. Both the NBA and MLB draft kids at roughly the same age as the NHL. But when you look at the three sports, the most drastic difference between the level at which kids are drafted and the top league exists in hockey. I think basketball is the easiest transition. Dnses and defensive players get better, but there's nobody guarding the basket, and the basket stays the same size, height, etc. Baseball is really a one on one game when you boil it down. There's very little decision making that happens at "game speed." So if a player's eyes are up to it, they should do ok. But in hockey, you have skating, shooting, passing, defensive responsibilities... all with five other guys plus a goalie trying to make life hard for you. You have teammates of varying skillsets and skill levels that you may or may not be out with from game to game or shift to shift. So many variables come into play, it's hard to pick out if a player will have a hard time with one of them.
