Kicking myself for not going goalie first with 16 teams. Had no idea it wasn't a snake draft never done a non snake happy to get tkachuk who I love but I should have grabbed markstrom or demko or oettinger. Problem was I thought it was a snake draft until about five picks before it got to me and my brain froze. My own fault I was reading the league rules an hour before and missed it. Love my skaters not so much my goalies but think Peterson will end up with kings net. Still if I had to do it over shester woulda been my pick no question.

I just realized there is a big "RIVALRY WEEK" banner above the overview and we play each other week 1 LOL

Took a bit of a different approach with my team this year in Hf.net.

Went right away with what I believe should be solid starting netminding.... Jack Campbell I think will put his experience in Tor and make it work for him in EDM....Hell Boy can't POSSIBLY have another bad year, even if his team isn't the best in front of him....and Jonathan Quick seemed a bit revitalized last season, and I think the old netminder as another good season or two left in him as his Kings continue to improve on all fronts.

Decided to go with more younger guys/newer guys, chancy picks this time around, that could turn into something no one expects.....starting on defense, with Owen Power, Alex Romanov.
And up front, with Andrei Kuzmenko, Nick Paul (first full season with a winning club? Let's go Paul!), and Tanner Jeannot.

Face offs should be a strength for me (Horvat, Dubois, Schenn, Haula, Stephenson, and the aforementioned Paul), but not JUST face off men....face off men with some offense and all around decent peripherals in various categories.

    Caveats?
Well, if my 'youngsters' on defense (Ryan Pulock is my only real established, reliable vet) fall on their face and Tony DeAngelo DOESN'T thrive in Philadelphia, it could be disastrous.
And if the goaltending turns out to be a mirage (Quick really IS done, Hell Boy just can't overcome his inept skaters, and Jack Campbell turns back into a back up guy), that could also undermine me big time.

I like my forwards units as a whole, but will it be enough to carry the team if those other areas falter?
    Don't know yet.

It is FHL pre-season, and EVERYONE is a contender....till the puck drops, and we possibly realize what pretenders we have on our squads! :shifty:

How dare you draft my favorite goalie!

Well, its a 1 year league, so I forgive you lol

  3. I am reasonably happy with the team I drafted despite being near the arse end of the draft.

I sacrificed offense for the sake of shoring up my goalies and may have overdone it in net, but my modus operandi has always been Peripherals and goalies lol. Time will tell if it was a good decision or not. I would rather have 1 too many than to have to spot start the Coyotes goalie just to make my weekly minimum.

My best guess is workhorse goalies will easily be the hardest commodity to acquire a month into the season. 16 teams mean 32 goalies just to have 2 per team. A single injury is devastating.

Supply and demand will be like the Halifax Housing market. My house doubled in value in the last 3 years because of how crazy low our housing stock has gotten and because of population growth.

Nobody deserves to be paid most more than this guy I remember when he purposely took less and said it was so Colorado could afford more players to win the Cup and by God he did everything he said he'd do so now he can demand and deserve the highest price now mission accomplished for everyone I wish more players were more loyal and honourable like this guy👍

    When did he "take less"?

His contract previous was signed when he was a 50 point player lol. It was comparable to scheifele at the time. He got so good that he was criminally underpaid

In any case, good for him. He deserves this contract.

An NHL source tells ESPN that the settlement is expected to bridge the gap between the money owed Kane by the Sharks and the money he's making on his new deal with the Oilers.

Kane was due $19 million in salary for the last three years of his San Jose contract. The first three years of his new deal with the Oilers pay him a combined $16.5 million in salary. An NHL source believed the settlement will generate a cap hit that will be retroactively applied to the 2021-22 Sharks' salary cap. They finished last season with around $4.9 million in cap space.

The San Jose Sharks and former forward Evander Kane have settled a grievance over his contract termination last season before the matter would have gone to arbitration.

The NHLPA filed a grievance on behalf of Kane in January after the Sharks terminated his deal, citing a breach of his contract and a violation AHL COVID-19 protocols. Kane was in the fourth year of a seven-year, $49 million contract that paid him $7 million on average annually.

Kane signed a free agent contract with the Edmonton Oilers last season and then signed a four-year extension with the Oilers this summer.

"The agreement has been approved by the NHL and the NHL Players' Association," the Sharks said in a statement. "We are satisfied that its terms will not adversely impact the team, either financially or competitively, in this or future seasons."

    JMO, but Garbage move....

Its not exactly a secret that locker room wasn't the best and Wheeler/Scheifele kinda ruled it and excluded a few people and even had fist fights with some. Wheeler actually half heartedly apologizing for how he dealt with Laine tells me where there is smoke there is fire.

But we knew that when Wheeler got ejected from practice for dropping the gloves and going to fight Chiariot after Scheifele cross checked Chiariot at practice and he shoved back. hell, Paul Maurice resigned as coach and walked away from the team saying he's taken them as far as he can and they need a new voice to take control.

    Ugh. Vegas.

Robin Lehner is to miss the entire season following hip surgery with his career in jeopardy. With the goalie musical chairs over, what options do the Knights have in net?  Backup Laurent Brossoit also had offseason syrgery and will miss a chunk of the season. So what now? Here are IMHO the options as i see them.....

LOGAN THOMPSON was an undrafted free agent signed to be AHL cannon fodder but has surprised by playing well at every level including a brief run with the Knights last season. Truth is I dont believe that he is the answer in net long term but they may be forced to play him and sign or pickup someone off waivers before the season as his backup. I have little if any faith in this move. A vet like Khubodin could be added as a very shaky 1B but it could get ugly quick.

VARLAMOV the Islanders are trying to move salary to make room for the Kadri signing so this makes oh so much sense. Varly has one year left on his deal, he is a proven commodity and would come very, very cheap as far as assets go.

JAKE ALLEN the Habs would love to find a taker for Allen who has a year left on his deal, like Varly he would come cheap

JOHN GIBSON Listed here because Vegas is Vegas, they love the shiny toys. The Ducks have some nice pieces and are getting better but Gibson could be moved to allow Dostal to play in net. I consider this the least likely but, it is Vegas, baby.

So IMHO if I were a betting man, I think Varlamov is such a perfect fit for both teams that this deal should be done like five minutes after the surgery was announced. He would cost little as the Isles need the cap space and he has lost his job to Sorokin on the Island, he would be a typical Knight addition, someone who used to be a name who they hope can still play.

Thompson was outplayed Lehner by seasons end last year.

My guess is they knock on the sharks door and ask for an Adin Hill or James Reimer?

    Yeah its a good read.

Makes Bertuzzi hitting Moore and the tragedy after seem like something that could have happened to Lemieux that night for the exact same type of reason.

McCarty sucker punched him with his glove on, just like Bertuzzi did to Moore, and then beat the crap out of him until he was concussed and then waited till the ref wasn't looking and kneed him in the head as hard as he could crushing his head between the knee and boards, and sounds proud of it lol

As Iconic as this brawl is, it could have turned out very very badly just as easily as the Bertuzzi/Moore incident did

Treliving will probably extend Monahan for less money now that he can bargain him down...which isn't bad depending on how low he can sign him for...hopefully same for Lucic if Treliving can sign Lucic for cheaper I'll be really happy...Huberdeau and Weegar we probably won't be able to extend but we could trade them for something depending on how the season goes...I think Tkachuk will help Florida alot this year so I don't think Florida made a bad deal but I just keeps making me think what Calgary could have gotten for Gaudreau...

Lol. Why would he WANT to extend Monahan?

The guy has been nothing but downhill for 3 years. He's a 4th liner production who was playing with superstars

If Huberdeau and Weegar sign, this is insane return for Matthew Tkachuk. As it is, Huberdeau for Tkachuk, straight across, would have been a win for the Flames.

Weegar and Huberdeau are high end players that are only 28, 29 years old, and you pay those players all day long. It’s even worse because their Stanley Cup window is the next 2-3 years not in 5-6 years. By giving up both players and not having someone to replace Weegar, they made their team actively worse and paid assets to do it. I really like Huberdeau; the way he hangs onto the puck in the offensive zone and finds players for scoring chances. I don't think it was an accident that Anthony Duclair and Sam Bennett all of a sudden saw large bumps in their goal scoring when they got to Florida. I guess we can infer what Barry Zito thought his chance of signing Huberdeau was going to be.

Zito and McCrimmon in Vegas were two people who were highly sought after as GMs by fans and management alike, and both have essentially mortgaged their franchise’s future with their inept asset management. Zito had all of the cards and paid way too much. Unbelievable. While I don't like the deal for Florida, I understand what they are doing, since they now have a player that they see as a core guy through his 24 to 31 year old seasons. Tkachuk's Give a Sh|t/60 is off the charts, and he plays with emotion, which the Panthers lacked that this playoff. The problem is that they paid too much to get him.

Also, to end the post, feast your eyes on the Panthers draft board until 2026, where their best picks are two 2nd-rounders:

    image.png

Barry Zito has to win a Stanley Cup, or he's going home wearing a barrel.

I'm not terribly worried about Florida’s draft picks yet.

Their core is still of age where you don't fret too much about draft pickd. Most age 24 to 26. Exception to lundell and knight, who are 20 and 22.

They do need to secure a defenseman though

    Florida got fleeced. Period.

Tkachuk is a good player, but he's no Huberdeau. And we know Huberdeau has chemistry in Florida.  Maybe one could argue "it's great regular season but didn't happen in playoffs." Really? What worked for Tkachuk in the playoffs? Ever?

Maybe Florida thought it was running toward a signing problem next year with Huberdeau.  I don't know. It seems they could have traded that same package elsewhere minute Huberdeau and then signed Huberdeau.

I don't get this from any level.

For all the gnashing of teeth in Calgary that neither Panther is signed,  neither was Tkachuk.  The Flames ended up with two incredibly marketable players who should each bring a windfall and in the meantime walk away with the pick and prospect.

Couldn't do better while holding a gun in one hand and Zito's first born in the other.

I see no downside for Calgary here.  And I don't get it for Florida.

Florida’s options were try to fit in extending one or two guys long term that will be in their 30s for most of the deal or extending a 24 year old who will be in his prime for about all of it. They made a smart move that people aren’t ready to wrap their head around yet because we are used to seeing contracts handed out that end with players being a broken down drain on the cap…which is why many teams don’t have money right now.

Tkachuk scoring over 100 points this past season might be an outlier. But I had high hopes for him for a long time in fantasy and always hoped he would develop into an 85 point multicat guy. He's 24 years old and now cost controlled for years.

By all reports  Weegar wants 7 to 8 million and Huberdeau wants 11 million +

Typically when you pay 29 year olds that kind of money over 8 years, you accept you are getting 2-3 more elite years and then praying they don't decline too badly in years 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8, and you are looking to trade with 50% retention near the end of the deal.

I.e Brent Burns, although sharks only retained 30%

I think Johnny Hockey will become a cautionary tale throughout the league. Cant imagine another superstar just walking away without some sort of return. Teams will be much more proactive in their approach. If it appears you won't resign and its not a negotiation ploy...you will be dealt. Nashville situation with Forsberg was different cause there was active talks between the 2 sides.

Didn't we say that about tavares?
