  1. October 14, 2023: BISONS SWEPT WITH DEPLETED BLUELINE MANITOBA BISONS 2 U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 5 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW HT : CW Web ➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW HT ➤ UofM: MHKY: T-Birds sweep Bisons with 5-2 win (with boxscore) ➤ UBC: Birds stay undefeated with weekend sweep of Bisons (with boxscore & video) Quick Summary Man: J. Hooker (08:33 1st), P. Malchuk (09:42 1st) UBC: T. Thorpe (09:59 1st), J. Wismer (02:24 2nd), S. Mutala (06:50 2nd), J. Smart (04:09 3rd), T. Rask (18:18 3rd) Goal: Man: Thornton (39 shots, 35 saves); UBC: Schwebius (15 shots, 13 saves) The Herd had only five healthy defencemen available for this one. Friday’s lineup listed forward Michael King on the blueline, but that was not the case on Saturday. By the middle of the 1st period, the Bisons had a 2-0 lead. The T-irds chipped away at Kolby Thornton and built a 4-2 lead. An empty-netter salted it away. The Bisons fall to 0-3-1. Another road trip awaits the Bisons next weekend, to Edmontown where they will face MacEwan. Meanwhile, UBC have a good chance to start 8-0-0 when they face Holy Trinity. In a statistical oddity, the Evil Monkeys led 5-1 after two periods and then outshot the Family Guys 23-4 in the 3rd. However, Mac scored twice early to make it somewhat interesting. Stevenson (13:25 3rd) Goal: Calg: Stankowski (38 shots, 36 saves); MRU: Farkas (31 shots, 28 saves) This was the best series of the weekend. In the end, each side got a well-deserved 2 points. Despite losing some blue-chip talent, the Bluegars have it together in the early going. The Dinos are now 5-1-0 and the Bluegars are 4-2-0. They led 2-1 entering the 3rd period before the Banjo-Cats hit the moonshine and rallied for the win. The result was hanging in the balance when an empty-netter put it away. The Kittens are now 2-2-2, the Spartans are 0-4-0. In Manitoba, UBC won 8-7 and 6-4 and in British California they won 6-4 and 5-2. The T-irds looked really good against the Evil Monkeys, and decent against Regina. The Bisons seem to start slow every weekend, and then build. They improved as play went along last weekend, when they faced superior opponents from the AHL and NCAA. On Monday afternoon the Herd had two very good periods against the Moose. It comes down to Kolby Thornton in goal. If he’s on, they have a good shot. If not, well ... with 7 goals scored per game last year, they still would have gone 1-3. I’ll be watch to see if Ryan Gottfried is able to play on the Bison blueline. IMO he’s their best defender and his absence at the end of their 3-2 loss to Sask and last weekend hurt them. In CW news, UBC’s Liam Kindree was player-of-the-week last week, with 2 goals, 4 assists, and a shootout goal. Also, the CW is altering formats in most sports. For Men's and Women's Hockey, here’s what they said: • Two divisions consisting of four and five teams each that will rotate through nine teams over six years • Games will be played both in and out of division • Playoff format will feature a six-team cross over I have no clue what that means. In this Battle of Edmontown, the Family Guys host Friday and the Evil Monkeys host Saturday. I do not recall the Apes looking so sub-standard to start a season. A 4-4 pre-season and a 1-3 regular season is not awe-inspiring. That said, they did not pad their schedule with weaker opponents. Of course, these teams faced off in pre-season. Although the score was the same, the play was much different. The Bisons were a lot more aggressive, both physically and by increased offensive focus. The failed 3rd period powerplay was your TSN Turning Point. Had the Bisons scored to make it a 3-2 game, they were right in it. Their aggressiveness with the puck hurt them as a blue-line turnover gave the Moose a 2-on-1 break where Nicholas Jones notched his 2nd of the game. From that point onward, the Bisons never raised much of a fuss. By the way, UND will not host the Bisons next year. They will play Augustana, a new Division I team from South Dakota, due to changes in NCAA rules which allow a pre-season exhibition game against Division I, II, or III or ACHA teams. I think the team was embarrassed this year. I overheard one player saying words to the effect of “We didn’t play. We just looked at the crowd.” The linked stories say who cleared waivers to go from the Jets to the Moose, and those sent from the Moose to the ECHL. Those sent down from the Jets were forward Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, defenceman Kyle Capobianco, and goaltender Collin Delia. None were eligible to play against the Bisons. Those sent to the ECHL were forwards Danny Katic, Keaton Jameson, and Ryan Foss, defenceman Darick Louis-Jean, and goaltender Dante Giannuzzi. As a bonus for many of the several little kids in attendance, the Jets practice ended during the warm-up. I saw the newly re-signed Mark Scheifele and another player I did not recognize signing autographs as they walked across to the dressing room. Also, former Moose Cory Schneider retired today at the age of 37. OUT EAST Mon Oct 9 Guelph 4 R.I.T. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD Links: ➤ UofA: Bears fall to 0-3 for first time in 94 years (with boxscore) I quote: The loss drops Alberta to 0-3-0, while MRU improves to 3-0-0. The Bears started 1929/30 0-4-0 on the season, with teams only playing two games against each other and the conference, at that time, was composed of just Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. I picked this one. It was a good choice. The rest were blow-outs, and this was a comeback OTW for the Bluegars. The good news for the Evil Monkeys is that they now have a point in the standings. Here are the links to their Elite Prospects pages: - Colt Conrad - Dawson Barteaux - Keaton Jameson - former Bison - Mark Liwiski - Stelio Mattheos The live links were not uploaded (at least to my notice) until after I got home from the game. The first star (by a LOT) was Bison goaltender Kolby Thornton. In the 1st period he faced 23 shots and surrendered just one goal. That one was by 1st round draft choice Chaz Lucius who was gifted a turnover in the left-wing face-off circle and picked a corner. In the 2nd period, Carson Golder made it 2-0 on a break-out from the Moose end up the entire length of the ice, and converted a pass from Danny Katic. Wyatt Bongiovanni made it 3-0 after a period of sustained pressure. The best goal of the night was converted by Colt Conrad on a pass from Thomas Caron, making it 4-0 in the 3rd. Nikita Chibrikov made it 5-0 on a powerplay. The Bisons replied on a powerplay of their own, with defenceman Parker Malchuk pinching in from the point. So, on to the Excited States to face the UND Flickertails/Fighting Sioux/Fighting Hawks on Saturday night. The re-match with the Moose goes Monday at 1:00 p.m. at the Iceplex. The Bluegars held a 4-2 lead entering the 3rd but allowed the Banjo-Cats to get back in the game, and tie it up with just a fraction of a second remaining. However, the Bluegars recovered and won it in less than 30 seconds of overtime. Hooker (16:06 2nd) Goal: Sask: Ross (23 shots, 21 saves); Man: Thornton (42 shots, 39 saves) I was watching on CanadaWest.tv from work so I was unable to make notes. There were a few line-up changes. The Bisons switched Casey for Calder on defence, and in goal Thornton started and Hawryluk was the backup. The Banjo-Mutts subbed in Faith and Hayes, and scratched Keeler and Tkachuk from the Thursday line-up. In their net, Ross started and Kooy backed-up. Thornton looked strong in goal. In four periods, he has 58 saves on 61 shots, a .951 S% and a 2.25 GAA. The powerplays were the key to the game. Tony Apetagon (being used on the point on the PP this year) opened scoring with a point shot. Captain Hooker scored the final goal during a 2nd period PP. In between, the Mutts scored thrice, including two just 26 seconds apart during a 4-minute PP of their own. The Bisons have a bye week next, but have a full slate of challenging non-conference games. The host the Manitoba Moose on Thursday, visit UND on Saturday, then visit the Moose on Monday afternoon. They will then have back-to-back road trips (to UBC and MacEwan) before playing MRU at home on October 27th and 28th. I put down the lines post-injury. Since it is getting late on a weeknight (a rare time for a Bison game), I cannot go over all the scores. To start with there was may more contact in this game than the last weekend’s two exhibitions combined. However, a few Bison problems resurfaced: one, they can dominate territory for long stretches and not get shots on goal and two, the goaltending remains off-and-on. There was a stretch in the 2nd period where the Bisons appeared to have all four lines rolling, then came a soft backhand goal from the face-off circle. In any event, Thornton looks like the best bet in the nets. A lot hinges on him finding what it takes to be a starting CW goaltender. The rematch goes Friday at 2:30 p.m., which is sooooo stupid. If you don’t have CanadaWest.tv, the Sask story says that HuskieFan.ca will have live audio. The link is above. So that will have to wait. Neither the Bisons nor Banjo-Mutts tore up the league in the pre-season. However, Sask played Regina, Calgary, and Alberta and the Bisons played Briercrest, Regina, and Lakehead. None of Sask’s games were uploaded to LeagueStat. The last time these played was last November and both games were tightly contested with each side picking up a win. I am annoyed that the Bisons are having to play Friday afternoon due to a Bomber game at the stadium. Why not Saturday/Sunday? That’s what normally has happened. September 23, 2023: NORWESTERS BEAT BISONS LAKEHEAD THUNDERWOLVES 5 MANITOBA BISONS 3 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofM: Schedule & Results ➤ LU: Lakehead kicks of preseason in Manitoba Quick Summary Lake: Massie (01:47 1st) , Mack (11:08 1st) , Mack (05:43 2nd) , Van Unen (10:14 3rd) , Pouliot (14:08 3rd) Man: H. Ostir (02:04 2nd) , J. Paulhus (12:38 2nd) , N. Basarab (06:18 3rd) Goal: Lake: Wright (35 shots, 32 saves); Man: Harkness (28 shots, 23 saves) This was a bit of a strange game where a lot of Bison talent was left in the stands. Nevertheless, it did answer some questions about this Bison squad. First, here’s how they lined up: Manitoba Goal 1 Harkness (30 Thornton) Defence 16 Hartje - 24 Wareham 25 Calder - 4 Malchuk 5 Casey - 9 Thiessen Forwards 11 Ostir - 19 Arpin - 20 Apetagon 10 Paulhus - 29 King - 26 Boucher 14 Zimmerman - 28 Behun - 21 Basarab 23 Fawkes - 12 Trimble - 13 Sutter Scratches G 34 Hawryluk - 35 Murphy D 6 Fry - 8 Toth - 27 Gottfried F 17 Veloso - 18 Hooker Lakehead Goal 31 Wright (30 Aiken) Defence 18 Jette - 3 Whittaker 23 Massie - 5 Turpin 2 Borbely - 28 McNeill - 8 Van Den Hurk Forwards 14 Van Unen - 27 Mack - 15 Ho 11 DeGrazia - 17 Gerrie - 21 Pouliot 16 Blackwell - 29 Edwards - 25 Massie 19 Stiles - 9 Smith - 24 Miles Scratches G 1 Cicigoi D 4 Wojciechowski - 22 Williams F 10 Badalamenti - 13 Fox The apparent Bison top line was dismantled for this game. Dylan Thiessen was moved to defence, and Colton Veloso and Jonny Hooker never suited up. Thiessen had an eventful night on the blueline. One must give him credit for going back there. Less than two minutes into the game, he had the puck on the RW side of his own goal and went to throw it around the boards. But oops. He picked the short side as Simon Harkness was en route to cover the LW post. Mid-way through the period he surrendered a break-away on a turnover and it was 2-0 for the Thundermutts. D’oh. Thiessen turned things around in the 2nd period when he made a silky-smooth PP pass to Hayden Ostir to make it a 2-1 game. The Bisons did manage to dominate the 2nd and 3rd periods, outshooting Lakehead 26-17 over that span. However, with the game tied 3-3 mid-way through the 3rd period, Harkness whiffed on a shot from Josh Van Unen to restore the Lakehead lead. Then LU added a PP goal for insurance. While one could not blame Harkness on the first two goals, this was the kind of comeback win that a good goaltender can achieve for his team. The Mutts did dress 21 players (seven defencemen). That helped when two players were assessed 10 minute misconducts on separate occasions. I also found out that the Mystery Man in #5 is defenceman Brandon Casey. He was paired with Thiessen and covered effectively for the most part. Blueline returnees Parker Malchuk and Chase Hartje were good at carrying the puck, but it seems that defence-first is this year’s motto. No end-to-end rushes from Hartje in this one. Newcomers Owen Wareham and Kian Calder looked okay to me. The Herd is now 1-2-0 and this was Lakehead’s first game. The Lakehead Norwesters (as they were known in the GPAC days) won this event last year. They then had a pretty good season, losing the OUA bronze medal playoff for the final berth in the University Cup. They were 18-6-3, and first in the OUA West. They lost to Windsor two games to one in the division final, and 4-0 to Concordia in the winner-take-all bronze playoff. Lakehead does not at present have any non-conference games on their scheduled. Not even the upcoming Christmas tour by the Bisons. So these may be their only pre-season games before they open the regular season on October 6th. Regina has had mixed results thus far. Without uploaded stats and rosters for any of their games thus far, it is hard to draw conclusions. Or even inferences. But a split with Sask followed by a loss to Minot State is peculiar. Unless Sask’s crop of WHL grads is not all it’s cracked up to be, or the Beavers are better than ACHA teams have been. The Bisons still have four goaltenders (one too many), seven defencemen (two to few), and 15 forwards (a decent number). The Mystery Man wearing #5 last weekend on defence looks to have been Lucas Fry, who had been listed as #6. My impression of last weekend’s games was that the Bisons need some offensive finish to capitalize on their significant edge in territory and possession, and hopefully new recruit Kolby Thornton will be good enough to seize the starting goaltender slot. GoBisons.ca also uploaded a story on Devon Skoleski signing in the ECHL. This was on Elite Prospects a week ago. He becomes the third player from last year’s squad to sign a pro contract, following Zach Patrick and Brett Davis. 23. September 16, 2023: BISONS END TRIP WITH LOSS After falling asleep waiting for eastern scores, here's the Saturday report. MANITOBA BISONS 2 REGINA COUGARS 4 Links: ➤ UofM: Schedule & Results ➤ UofR: Schedule & Results ➤ UofR: YouTube The Banjo-Cats live-streamed the game on YouTube, but I only found out about it early in the 3rd period via a YouTube notice. USports teams need to announce these sorts of things in advance. The good thing about a YouTube stream is that I could watch the game afterwards. The players did not have names on their jerseys. So I just covered the Bison roster. Here’s how they lined up: Goal 34 Hawryluk - 35 Murphy Defence 16 Hartje - 24 Wareham 4 Malchuk - 25 Calder 5 ?????????? Forwards 18 Hooker - 9 Thiessen - 17 Veloso 11 Ostir - 19 Arpin - 20 Apetagon 14 Zimmerman - 28 Behun - 26 Boucher - 10 Paulhus 23 Fawkes - 12 Trimble - 13 Sutter Scratches G 1 Harkness - 30 Thornton D 6 Fry - 8 Toth - 27 Gottfried F 21 Basarab - 29 King The scoring was kinda like this (SOG and time of goals was not announced): 1st UofM - Behun - 1st shot of game before stream started UofR - McCabe - PP 2nd UofR - Culling - a long shot where Hawryluk whiffed on it UofR - Runke - PP UofM - Ostir - PP 3rd UofR - empty-netter - not sure if it counted because time expired Ethan Anders went the distance in the Regina goal. There is no #5 on the Bison roster and the announcers never said his name. Of the scratched players, it could be #27 Gottfried in a different jersey but I never got a good look at him. I infer that some injuries happened on the blueline, otherwise it makes no sense to dress just 5 d-men and 13 forwards. With 5 d-men they all played a lot. Malchuk and Hartje never paired up, and neither did Calder and Wareham. #5 played with everybody. I believe I saw Boucher back on the blueline a couple of times. In any event, IMO a team cannot play a season with just 7 d-men. Last year the injuries were up front, but playing a d-man up front is no problem in my view. Four goaltenders is also too many, obviously. I am hoping the new guy Thornton pans out. He looked solid against Briercrest. But that’s a far cry from the upper echelons of the CW. Overall, the Bisons had the majority of possession and territory. They had a lack of finish and the goaltending was okay, but for that one whiff. I suppose I’ll find out more next weekend when Lakehead and Regina come to town. The Bisons are 1-1-0, Regina is 2-2-0, and Lakehead has not yet played. The Clippers were 13-9-2 last year and lost out to NAIT in a 3-game series where every game was decided by one goal. Sask has no news stories posted since the end of last season. Bedrock U’s sweep of the Evil Monkeys has to more impressive that Sask’s split against their Banjo-loving brethren. MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS (1-0-0) ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS (1-3-0) Links: ➤ UofA: Team Website ➤ MRU: Team Website This is a home-and-home series, Friday in Edmontown and Saturday in Calgary. Neither side has a roster page uploaded, however the Evil Monkeys did upload rosters and stats for their home game against MacEwan two weeks ago. They are slated to do so again on Friday, so check the above LeagueStats link. The Monkeys cannot be happy with a 1-3-0 start. The Bluegars were supposed to play MacEwan twice last weekend, but damaged them too much on Friday so that Saturday’s game was cancelled. U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS (1-0-0) TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS (1-0-0) Links: ➤ UBC: Team Website ➤ TWU: Team Website Both sides uploaded roster pages this week, which I have not had a chance to review just yet. Both sides beat the SFU Globetrotters last weekend. UBC’s schedule also confirms that there are indeed two games this weekend, Friday at Holy Trinity and Saturday at UBC. OOKS (ACAC: 0-0-0) Links: ➤ MacU: Team Website ➤ NAIT: NAIT Men's Hockey Adds Nine Recruits For The 2023-24 Season Hopefully the Mythical Mutants have enough players for two games this weekend. I believe that this is the first match-up between these former ACAC rivals since Mac moved to the CW. NAIT has a season preview story linked. Both teams are based in Edmontown, but NAIT hosts Friday and Mac hosts Saturday.
