  2. Game # 27 Flames 2 Devils 4 Hischier scores twice, Devils beat Flames 4-2 for 3rd straight victory and 6th in 7 games Updated: Dec 9, 2023, 08:43 pm CALGARY, Alberta -- — Nico Hischier scored twice and the New Jersey Devils beat the Calgary Flames 4-2 on Saturday for their third straight victory and sixth in seven games. Jesper Bratt had a goal and an assist, Timo Meier also scored and Vitek Vanecek made 23 saves to help the Devils improve to 14-10-1. They are 9-4-0 on the road. “It’s not rocket science. You’ve got to go to the net hard and good things happen,” Hischier said. “You have to simplify your game. That’s what we’ve done the last couple games. We’ve got some lucky bounces but if you’re not going there, you’re not getting them.” Former Devils forward Yegor Sharangovich and Nazem Kadri scored for Calgary. The Flames finished a six-game homestand 3-3-0, leaving them 11-13-3. ”In the second, I thought we got away from it. Still a tight game, but I thought we made it hard on ourselves,” Flames captain Mikael Backlund said. “We weren’t playing as fast and we weren’t as efficient getting in on the forecheck.” Rookie Dustin Wolf, making consecutive starts for the first time in his career, stopped 26 shots for Calgary. The Devils took a 2-1 lead midway through the second period on a controversial goal. After Hischier mishandled the puck on a scoring chance, Flames forward Blake Coleman banked a clearing attempt off Bratt and into the net. However, seconds earlier, Wolf was knocked off balance and sent spinning when Hischier slid into his pads. Calgary coach Ryan Huska challenged for goalie interference, but the call stood with the explanation that Coleman sent Hischier into the goalie. “The guys in the room have a lot of different views,” Calgary coach Ryan Huska said. “We didn’t feel there was a push on our part for him to go into the goalie so that’s why we challenged.” The Devils took a 3-1 lead at 8:59 of the third when Wolf’s errant outlet pass was intercepted by Alexander Holtz, who fired a puck toward the front of the net for a deflection by Meier. Kadri scored with 5:14 left, and Hischier put it away with an empty-netter in the final minute. “We’re trying to elevate our game,” Hischier said. “I think we’ve done it so far but I think there’s still another step in our game, especially to bring together a 60-minute hockey game.”
  3. Game # 26 Bos 5 Yotes 3 Pastrnak scores twice as Bruins beat Coyotes 5-3 0:52 David Pastrnak's second goal puts Coyotes away for good Updated: Dec 9, 2023, 05:15 pm BOSTON -- — David Pastrnak had two goals and an assist, Trent Frederic added two assists and the Boston Bruins held off the Arizona Coyotes 5-3 on Saturday. Charlie Coyle also scored for Boston and Kevin Shattenkirk got his 99th career goal as the Bruins won for the fourth time in five games and improved to 10-2-1 at home. Trailing 3-0, Arizona got back-to-back goals from Clayton Keller and Michael Carcone 32 seconds apart early in the second period. They never got closer as Linus Ullmark finished with 31 saves. “They’re a good team offensively and they can make you pay. I thought we regrouped really well," Shattenkirk said. “We stuck with it, got back to our gameplan and got that fourth and fifth goal at the right time.” Ullmark came up with a pair of stops just outside the goal line late in an Arizona power play and Pastrnak sealed it with his second goal of the game, beating Connor Ingram with a wrist shot with 5:31 left in the third. “Our execution was a little bit below average, but Linus played great,” Frederic said. Danton Heinen also scored for Boston. Ingram stopped 24 shots for Arizona, which kicked off a three-game road trip with its second straight loss following a five-game winning streak. The Coyotes went 0-for-5 on the power play. “I think they just capitalized on our mistakes. We got off to a good start. There were good moments,” Carcone said. “I thought we played a pretty solid game overall. It’s just when we had those mental collapses they took advantage of it.” Pastrnak scored his 15th of the season when he skated the puck out from behind the net, delayed and beat Ingram with a wrist shot 15:22 of the first period. Coyle redirected a crossing pass from Frederic for his 10th goal of the season and a 2-0 lead less than a minute later. “I was just trying to plant myself there and he fired it,” Coyle said. “There was a stick there, but he still made a great pass and I honestly didn’t do much with it.” Shattenkirk made it 3-0 early in the second period on a power play, one-timing a pass from Pastrnak. Keller beat Ullmark with a wrist shot from the left circle 2:50 into the second, then Carcone grabbed the puck after a turnover just outside the Arizona zone and beat Ullmark with another wrister from the same circle. Frederic picked up his second assist with a pass that set up Heinen’s goal from the slot that put Boston back up 4-2 9:12 into the second period. The Bruins were without injured defenseman Charlie McAvoy and lost center Pavel Zacha early in the game to an undisclosed upper-body injury.

  6. Game # 26 Flames 3 Canes 2 Blake Coleman scores short-handed goal in 3rd, Flames rally to beat Hurricanes 3-2 ByAP Updated: Dec 8, 2023, 01:39 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Blake Coleman had a short-handed goal and an assist and the Calgary Flames rallied to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Thursday night. Coleman scored the go-ahead goal at 11:44 of the third period. Ramus Andersson and Connor Zary also scored in the third for Calgary, which faced a two-goal deficit after one period. “Guys stuck with it and fought back,” Coleman said. “We’re doing everything we can to start better. Guys are searching for ways to do it, but it’s a results business. It’s a win in the column for us, so it’s important.” Calgary’s Dustin Wolf made 30 saves in his second career NHL start. Wolf, the American Hockey League’s most valuable player and top goalie last season, was called up Tuesday. He played almost two periods in relief of Dan Vladar on Tuesday night in a 5-2 loss to Minnesota. “It’s pretty special right?” Wolf said. “Any time you get a call to come play with Calgary, it’s a blessing. Try to take every moment and make the most of it and try and have a smile on my face while I’m doing it.” Stefan Noesen and Michael Bunting scored for Carolina. Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 24 shots a night after he was pulled early in a 6-1 loss in Edmonton. “There should be a huge sense of urgency going into a period like that, especially when you’ve got a two-goal lead to close it out,” Hurricanes forward Jordan Martinook said. “For us to sit back and let them come, we didn’t have any pushback. Especially where we’re at right now, I don’t know. It’s hard to fathom. We’re in a rut right now.” The question of which goalie can step forward in the absence of Jacob Markstrom has been the buzz around the Flames since Markstrom fractured a finger on his right blocker hand in Monday’s practice. Markstrom’s status is week to week. After a lackluster 40 minutes, the Flames broke loose in the third period, scoring twice in a 1:21 span, followed by Coleman’s short-handed goal. Calgary successfully challenged for goaltender interference on what would have been a Sebastian Aho tying goal with just under five minutes remaining in regulation. Coleman collected the puck off a neutral-zone turnover by the Hurricanes. He skated into the zone and beat Kochetkov with a wrist shot to the corner of the net from the high slot. “To know that you have that ability to come back in games late in the year is important because last year we didn’t have that ability,” Coleman said. “If we can figure out the other half, we’re going to be in good shape.”
  7. Game # 25 Bos 1 Buff 3 Sabres snap 4-game skid with a 3-1 win over Atlantic Division-leading Bruins ByAP Updated: Dec 7, 2023, 10:38 pm BOSTON -- — JJ Peterka, Tage Thompson and Victor Olofsson scored and the Buffalo Sabres snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. Devon Levi made 30 saves for Buffalo, which beat the Atlantic Division-leading Bruins for the first time in nearly a calendar year. The Bruins had won three straight against Buffalo. The Sabres last beat Boston on Dec. 31, 2022. “Just focusing on stepping over the boards and winning your shift and beating the guy across from you,” Thompson said. “From there, you get time and space to make plays.” Brad Marchand scored for Boston, which had its four-game winning streak halted. Marchand also recorded the 1,000th penalty of his career. “This game will humble you quickly and we saw that tonight,” Marchand said. “It’s about making sure you play hard and make life difficult on the other team.” Linus Ullmark finished with 33 saves, and the Bruins were outshot 35-29. “We just didn’t have any energy or life to us,” said Boston head coach Jim Montgomery, noting there was concern coming into the game based off the stagnant vibe that was given off during Wednesday’s practice. “I expect us to get better every period. I think we went from awful to poor to average.” A scramble in front of the Boston net was originally ruled a no-goal by the referee behind the net, then ruled a goal for Buffalo’s Eric Anderson after the officials huddled. The play was reviewed for goaltender interference, with the Bruins winning the challenge with 5:18 left in the first period. The period ended with the Sabres outshooting Boston 19-5. Early in the second period, Buffalo’s Dylan Cozens won a faceoff in the Boston zone and Peterka scored his 11th goal of the season on a shot from just outside the circle. “It was a good shot,” Ullmark said. “Sometimes, you’re in a good position and see it all the way. Sometimes, they utilize people in front of you in a good way and that was one of those situations. They want to create chaos and put a lot of bodies in front of you.” Buffalo made it 2-0 with three minutes left in the second. Former Bruin Connor Clifton sent a pass to Thompson, who scored his seventh of the season on a one-timer from just outside the hash marks of the left circle. “I think (Clifton) saw me the whole way. Great pinch along the boards,” Thompson said. “We locked eyes and he was probably waiting for me to open up. He made a great pass.” The Bruins cut their deficit in half 28 seconds later when Marchand’s shot bounced off Buffalo defenseman Erik Johnson and into the net. The score made it five straight Boston goals coming off the Marchand’s stick dating to last Saturday. Boston spent considerable time in the Buffalo zone early in the third period before a developing 2-on-1 break resulted in Olofsson scoring his fourth of the season. Anderson made his debut with the Sabres one day after being acquired from Columbus. Boston recalled two players before Thursday’s game. Defenseman Mason Lohrei took the place of Derek Forbort, who was placed on long-term injured reserve with a lower-body injury. With Jeremy Swayman missing the game for the Bruins with an illness, goalie Brandon Bussi served as the backup to Ulllmark. The Bruins played the majority of the third period without top defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who went to the dressing room after a heavy collision. Montgomery said afterwards that McAvoy suffered an upper-body injury. “Obviously that’s a gap that’s hard to fill,” said Boston forward Charlie Coyle when asked about Boston attempting to make a comeback without McAvoy. “If you’re down a goal, he’s a guy you want on the ice, specifically in the situation we were in tonight.”

  9. Game # 25 Flames 2 Wild 5 Matt Boldy's 3-point game powers Wild to a 5-2 win over the Flames ByAP Updated: Dec 6, 2023, 01:22 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Matt Boldy scored twice and had an assist, leading the Minnesota Wild to a 5-2 win over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. Kirill Kaprizov had a goal and an assist, and Marcus Foligno and Joel Eriksson Ek also scored for the Wild (9-10-4), who improved to 4-0-0 since Jon Hynes replaced Dean Evason as head coach Nov. 27. “A lot of credit to Jon. He’s come in and just established what he wants us to do and play like and it’s a lot faster,” Wild forward Marcus Foligno said. “Our breaking out is a lot better than it has been. We’re big and strong and we needed to get faster. Guys are snapping the puck around tape to tape. It’s a lot easier when you play like that and … it’s a kick in the butt when you get a coach fired.” Minnesota has outscored its opponents 18-5 in the four games since the coaching change. Wild goalie Filip Gustavsson had 28 saves and improved his career mark against Calgary to 4-0-1. “I give the players a lot of credit,” Hynes said. “They had adversity early in the year and it looks right now like they just want to compete every night and get themselves, get ourselves, back in the mix to be able to contend for a playoff spot.” Connor Zary and Mikael Backlund scored for Calgary (10-12-3). Dan Vladar stopped 13 of 16 shots in just over a period of action before being replaced by AHL callup Dustin Wolf, who turned away 11 of 13 shots. The Flames said earlier Tuesday that goaltender Jacob Markstrom was week to week with a fractured finger on his right blocker hand, injured in Monday’s practice. Minnesota led 2-0 just 45 seconds into the second period and 3-0 at 90 seconds when Wolf replaced Vladar. Backlund countered for the Flames at 6:49, when he redirected MacKenzie Weegar’s shot from the blue line. “A really slow start and we knew going into the game they were a really good first-period team,” Backlund said. “Vladdy and Wolf did their best today. It’s not on them. Vladdy played really well for us in the first. If it wasn’t for him, it would have been more goals against.” Boldy’s second of the game at 13:58 restored the Wild's three-goal lead heading into the third period. Zary redirected Ilya Solovyov's shot for a goal at 1:37 of the third period. Eriksson Ek countered at 6:49 when Nazem Kadri slid into Wolf as the Swede shot the puck. Boldy deflected Kaprizov’s shot for a power-play goal and his second of the second period. He whipped the puck over Vladar’s glove at 1:30 after Kaprizov tucked in a rebound off Marco Rossi’s shot off the post. Mats Zuccarello’s assist on Kaprizov’s goal was the 600th of his career. The 36-year-old extended his point streak to 10 games with three goals and 11 assists in that span. Wolf turned back four shots during a Minnesota power play shortly after coming into the game. He also stoned Brandon Duhaime on a short-handed breakaway in the second period. A sluggish start and six giveaways in the first 20 minutes had Calgary leaning heavily on Vladar. Minnesota outshot Calgary 13-5 in the first period and led 1-0 by 1:26 after scoring on their first shot of the game. After deking Solovyov, Foligno’s shot that came out of the net quickly wasn’t signaled a goal until half a minute later when both teams were in Minnesota’s end.

  11. Game # 24 Bos 3 CBJ 1 Brad Marchand gets natural hat trick in 3rd period; Bruins beat Blue Jackets, 3-1 ByAP Updated: Dec 3, 2023, 10:24 pm BOSTON -- — Brad Marchand recorded a natural hat trick in the third period to lead the Boston Bruins to a 3-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday night. Facing each other for the second time in six days, the Bruins got some payback for a 5-2 loss in Columbus with their third straight victory. “They don't come often,” Marchand said of his first career natural hat trick. “It's just sometimes how it goes. Sometimes you get the bounces, sometimes you don't.” Jeremy Swayman, pulled in the loss at Columbus in the second period, made 24 saves. “He’s a world-class player,” Swayman said of Marchand. “He’s going to keep goalies guessing.” Boone Jenner scored for the Blue Jackets, who lost for the third time in five games, and Spencer Martin stopped 25 shots. Boston defenseman Charlie McAvoy blocked a shot in the closing minute and skated to the bench slowly. Trailing 1-0, the Bruins tied it 1:56 into the third when Marchand’s shot from the right circle deflected off the stick of Columbus defense Zach Werenski and over Martin’s right shoulder. Marchand gave them the lead 3:41 later when he fired a wrister past Martin from the high-slot for a power-play goal. He completed the hat trick from the left side, scoring from all three sides of the ice, when he slipped a wrister inside the right post from the bottom of the left circle at 7:46 for his second power-play goal of the night. “I didn't notice that. It is,” Boston coach Jim Montgomery said when asked about the “uniqueness” of Marchand scoring on all three sides. “It just shows how diverse he is.” The TD Garden fans showered the ice with hats on a cool, rainy night in Boston. The PA played an oldie, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” while the ice crew picked up the hats. One, though — a red and white Santa hat — Marchand retrieved from a member of the crew and handed to a Bruins’ equipment person on the bench. “I saw a nice camel one that I went after right away,” Marchand said of the pile of hats. “Then someone saw a Santa hat. I'm a huge Christmas guy. It's was a no-brainer.” Marchand scored an overtime winner in the closing seconds of Boston’s victory at Toronto on Saturday night. Martin was solid in the second period, making 15 saves in a period where Boston had a handful of excellent scoring chances. “I don't think it was the whole team. It was just a few events,” Columbus coach Pascal Vincent said. “Spencer Martin was outstanding tonight.”

  13. Game # 24 Flames 3 Nucks 4 Mikheyev and Lafferty lead Canucks to 4-3 win over Flames ByAP Updated: Dec 3, 2023, 02:45 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Ilya Mikheyev and Sam Lafferty each had a goal and an assist as the Vancouver Canucks beat the Calgary Flames 4-3 Saturday night. Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson also scored for the Canucks, and Filip Hronek had three assists. Thatcher Demko stopped 19 shots. Vancouver has been alternating wins and losses the last eight games, a stretch that was preceded by a 5-2 loss at Calgary on Nov. 16. “Good win for us, these guys beat us a couple of weeks ago,” Hughes said. “We just got to keep putting it together every night and find a way to win.” Elias Lindholm scored twice and Mikael Backlund also had a goal for the Flames, who snapped a two-game win streak. Jacob Markstrom finished with 18 saves. “We weren't good enough to win the game,” Lindholm said. “Overall, they were more desperate than us. In the first, they were stronger on pucks and won more battles were just better overall.” Vancouver led 2-1 after the first period and 3-1 heading into the third. The Canucks maintained that lead until Lindholm pulled the Flames within one with 4:21 remaining. Nikita Zadorov then shot at an empty Flames net, but teammate Pettersson touched it before it went in the net to make it 4-2 with 1:20 left. “We got the job done, we got a ‘W,' that's all that matters," said Zadorov, who was making his Canucks debut two nights after being acquired from the Flames. “They were chirping me,” Zadorov said about his former teammates. “It’s fun. It’s between us. I love them. They love me. It’s a mutual relationship. I had fun playing against them today.” Lindholm then scored again with 54 seconds to go to make it 4-3 and the Canucks held on for the road win two nights after a 4-1 loss at home to Vegas. “I thought we grinded pretty well,” Vancouver coach Rick Tocchet said. “We hung in there, getting up 3-1. At the end I think we lost a little bit of composure but I thought for the most part the resiliency, nice bounce-back game after the Vegas game so I got to give the guys a lot of credit." Vancouver opened the scoring at 2:03 on its first shot of the game. Taking a pass from Brock Boeser, Hughes strode off the sideboards and from the faceoff dot snapped a shot that beat Markstrom glove side. Lafferty doubled the lead just over six minutes later when Hronek’s slapshot from the blue line hit Mikheyev in front and caromed to Lafferty, who knocked in his sixth goal. Calgary got on the scoreboard at 12:18 of the first when it’s slumping power play, which entered the game 1 for 34 in the previous 12 games, came through on its first opportunity. After a strong play by rookie Connor Zary to keep the puck in at the blue line while fending off pressure from Lafferty, he then got the puck to MacKenzie Weegar who set up Adam Ruzicka whose hard pass to the front of the net was steered in by Backlund. The Flames finished 2 for 5 on the man advantage while the Canucks were 0 for 4. Zadorov didn't have a warm welcome back as the defenseman, who had requested a trade, was lustily booed every time he touched the puck in the first period. “Calgary's got great fans, he kind of laughed about it, no big deal,” Tocchet said.
  14. Game # 23 Bos 4 Leafs 3 OT Marchand scores late in OT to lift Bruins to 4-3 win over Maple Leafs 1:04 Marchand scores OT winner for Bruins on an open net The Bruins force Joseph Woll away from the front of the net, allowing Brad Marchand to score the overtime-winning goal for Boston. ByAP Updated: Dec 2, 2023, 11:52 pm TORONTO -- — Brad Marchand scored at 4:52 of overtime as the Boston Bruins beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on Saturday night. David Pastrnak had a goal and two assists, and Trent Frederic and Kevin Shattenkirk also scored for Boston. Linus Ullmark made 37 saves for the Bruins, who have won two in a row after three straight regulation losses. Marchand’s winner came after William Nylander fell in the neutral zone. Pastrnak was denied on a breakaway by Woll, but the puck found its way back in front for the Boston captain to bury his eighth goal of the season to snap an eight-game goal-scoring drought. “Great handle by him,” Pastrnak said. “So happy for him ... Always fun to win. Especially here.” Auston Matthews scored twice and Max Domi also had a goal for Toronto. Joseph Woll stopped 33 shots. “Hard-played hockey game,” Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. “Not your typical early December hockey game.” Woll made a breakaway stop on Pavel Zacha in OT and Ullmark denied Marner from in close to set up Marchand’s dramatic clincher. Toronto tied the score with 6 seconds left in regulation when Matthews scored his second of the night and 16th of the season. “Two competitive teams,” Matthews said. “They’ve been the class of the league the last two years … could have went either way.” Boston opened the scoring at 10:45 of the first period when Pastrnak dashed over the Toronto blue line and rifled his 14th goal over Woll’s shoulder to become the first player to score 50 times in the 2023 calendar year. Matthews hit the post early in the second before Pastrnak found a pinching Shattenkirk with a perfect diagonal pass in the offensive zone for the defenseman to roof his first with the Bruins at 7:31 to make it 2-0. Matthews got the Maple Leafs on the scoreboard with 7:54 remaining in the middle period when he scored his 15th with Ullmark out of position and Boston defenseman Charlie McAvoy trying to play goal on a scramble. “He was a beast out there,” Keefe said of Matthews, who had one goal in his previous nine games. “He was all over the puck.” Domi, who’s father Tie was a Toronto fan favorite, then scored his first with the Maple Leafs at 2:11 of the third after taking a pass from Nick Robertson and moving in all alone on Ullmark to tie it 2-2. “Feels good to contribute,” Domi said. “But that (stuff’s) irrelevant when you don’t win.” Frederic put the Bruins ahead 3-2 with 6:50 left when he poked home a rebound for his sixth after Derek Forbort took the initial shot. Toronto goalie Ilya Samsonov sat out with an illness. Martin Jones was recalled from the AHL on an emergency basis to serve as Woll’s backup. Maple Leafs captain John Tavares now has 996 career points after picking up an assist.
  15. Tristan Jarry first Penguins goalie to score thanks to empty-netter TAMPA, Fla. -- Goalie Tristan Jarry scored an empty-net goal and made 39 saves in the Pittsburgh Penguins' 4-2 comeback victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night. Jarry stopped a dump-in and sent the puck end-to-end into the net with 1:08 left to collect the 17th tally by a goalie in NHL history. "It was pretty lucky," he said. "It's pretty neat, honestly. It's something that doesn't happen very often. There's very few that have done it, so it's definitely pretty cool. But honestly the win means more." Jarry, the fourth goalie to score in the past 10 years, looked at the boards at first for a potential clearing try before taking aim at the opposing goal. "It was just kind of the perfect scenario," he said. "It was coming in kind of slow and I was able to just get around it and shoot as hard as I could." It was the first goal scored by a Penguins goalie. Jarry also had a goal for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL on Nov. 14, 2018, at Springfield. "I'm really happy for him," Penguins star Sidney Crosby said. Jeff Carter scored the go-ahead goal in the third period for the Penguins, who also got goals from Crosby and Drew O'Connor. Steven Stamkos and Tanner Jeannot scored for the Lightning. NHL points leader Nikita Kucherov had two assists to tie his career high with an eight-game points streak. He finished with a team-record 28 points (in 14 games) for the month of November.

  19. Game # 23 Flames 4 Stars 3 OT Nazem Kadri scores in OT to lift Flames past Stars, 4-3 ByAP Updated: Dec 1, 2023, 01:56 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Nazem Kadri scored at 1:01 of overtime to give the Calgary Flames a 4-3 victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night. The puck deflected off Kadri as he drove toward the net on a play that was reviewed for goaltender interference. Calgary tied it with 2:41 remaining in regulation when defensemen MacKenzie Weeger lofted a shot from the blue line past screened goalie Scott Wedgewood. Fellow defensemen Noah Hanifin and Chris Tanev also scored for Calgary. “Huge, huge,” Kadri said. “We like to get our D involved. That’s part of the offense we have. We know we can score, we know we can get on the board, including those guys and they’ve got good skill. That’s what happens when you shoot the puck.” Jacob Markstrom assisted on the winner and made 13 saves. The Flames are 6-3-1 their last 10 and went 8-4-2 in November to improve to 10-10-3. “The team’s bonding, we’re coming together, we’re playing really good hockey right now, we’re not quitting and we’re playing against really good teams while we’re doing it,” Hanifin said. “It’s great to see and just got to keep this rolling into December.” Mason Marchment twice for Dallas, the second on a penalty shot to give the Stars a 3-2 lead early in the third period. Thomas Harley also scored for Dallas, while Wedgewood made 32 saves. The Stars are 13-5-3. Dallas took three of four points on a two-game road swing. “Three of four on this trip you’ll take all day long,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said. “Those momentum shifts, I would have liked to have us play with a little more pressure when we had the lead. We’re at the end of a road trip here and we sat back a little too much and gave them a little bit too much room. Still thought we could have closed it out.” On the penalty shot, Marchment ripped the puck by Markstrom’s glove after Tanev hauled down Marchment on a breakaway up the middle. Dallas successfully challenged Mikael Backlund's apparent goal with 5:01 remaining in regulation when Calgary’s captain tipped Hanifin's shot by Wedgewood. The Stars argued there was a hand pass in the offensive zone. Three hours before the game, the Flames announced the trade of defenseman Nikita Zadorov to the Vancouver Canucks for a 2026 third-round draft choice and a fifth-round pick in 2024. “It could have been easily a huge distraction, but we were able to focus on what we needed to do tonight,” Tanev said.
  20. Game # 22 Bps 3 SJS 0 Swayman rebounds with a shutout as the Bruins blank the Sharks 3-0 to stop their 3-game skid ByAP Updated: Nov 30, 2023, 11:20 pm BOSTON -- — Paval Zacha had a goal and an assist as the Boston Bruins snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night. Danton Heinen and Jake DeBrusk also scored. Jeremy Swayman — pulled during Monday’s 5-2 loss to Columbus — stopped all 28 shots he faced for his second shutout this season. “I’m just so happy to see everyone take initiative and play Bruins hockey in front of our fans. It’s a good step for us. Now we have to continue it,” Swayman said. “It was exactly what I wanted to do — keep the puck out of the net. It was good, but at the same time, there’s still plenty to work on. You want to use this as a momentum piece moving forward.” David Pastrnak added two assists for the Bruins, who beat the NHL-worst Sharks for the 13th straight time. “You give up 17 goals in three games and we didn’t look anything like ourselves. It was good to see us look like ourselves without the puck in all three zones,” Boston coach Jim Montgomery said. MacKenzie Blackwood made 32 saves for San Jose, which won its previous two games. After both teams squandered power-play chances in a scoreless first period, the Bruins struck 1:38 into the second as Heinen drilled a shot short side for his third goal of the season. San Jose had an opportunity to clear the puck but Matt Poitras kept the play alive by sliding a backhand feed over to Heinen, who glided through the circle by his lonesome before ripping the puck past Blackwood. Later in the same period, Boston’s advantage grew to 2-0 when DeBrusk was the recipient of strong puck movement that enabled the forward to walk in and beat Blackwood with a backhand at 8:10. It was DeBrusk’s third goal in the last five games, with assists from Zacha and Pastrnak. San Jose was awarded a 5-on-3 chance with 25.5 seconds remaining in the second. The power play carried over into the third period, with the Sharks failing to register a single shot after Charlie McAvoy was given a boarding penalty and Brad Marchand received an additional two minutes for instigating a fight. “They did a great job. Penalty killing has always been one of our strengths … cutting sticks and reading plays and having good sticks,” Marchand said. “It was a huge momentum swing for us to get that kill.” A give-and-go sequence between Pastrnak and Zacha turned into a power-play goal at 6:37 of the third. Pastrnak has 20 assists. “There’s still a lot of things we can get better at, but this was a good step forward,” Zacha said. “Swayman played a great game, which helped us out a lot.” Boston’s dominance in the second translated into an 18-6 advantage in shots. For the game, San Jose was outshot 35-28. The Sharks are 0-10-0 on the road this season. They opened a six-game trip with the first of three games in four days. “Psychologically, we get down — especially on the road. We tend to feel sorry for ourselves,” coach David Quinn said. Sharks forward Tomas Hertl returned to the lineup after missing a game with an upper-body injury. He confirmed afterward he had surgery Monday to remove a kidney stone. “It was pretty painful, but I felt good enough to jump in,” Hertl said. “Two minutes with a 5-on-3, you have to put one in.”
