  1. My gut feeling (no pun intended) is JVR will need surgery to fix his problem.

If he needs surgery, they need to do it now. He isn't helping the team at all right now. If he's truly hurt, get it fixed, and get him healthy for April. As FC mentioned, imagine if he this is next year, at $4.25/mil/year...OUCH.

  2. The whole pre-game meal scene surprised me a bit... you think the guys were just messing with him or Bryz really doesn't fit in that well with the guys?

I kinda thought it was because the cameras were following Bryz around and the rest of team didn't want to deal with the HBO crew during lunch.

  3. he doesn't seem to think the game

So you don't like him cause he's dumb? I got no problem with that.

    Just bustin' your stones, Aziz.

I just don't see the sustained effort this year. Watch Giroux, Talbot, Simmonds, etc...there is NO doubt they bust ass for 45 secs a shift. The results may vary, but effort is there. Not seeing it with JVR..and after watching how he can play when he has that "mindset" in last year's playoffs, it's maddening. He could flat out dominate. Instead, we go 1-2 periods without hearing his name.

  4. i'm just not surprised bryzgalov is being the goalie he's always been.

I just looked up his stats since that's really the only way to evaluate him at this point. Granted the sample size is small(30 games vs 82), but has Bryz ever been 36th of 44 in Save Percentage or 31st of 44 in GAA? I didn't do the historical look up, but I feel confident saying no. Based on that, I would say he's been worse than the goalie he's always been.

More importantly, he has failed the eyeball test for me. He just doesn't look confident, he doesn't look "good". He makes routine saves look alarmingly difficult at times, he appears to lose focus, and at times, it appears he just doesn't care. Case in point, the shootout last night....yeah, I know...both goalies looked bad. But based on his post game comment about hating shootouts, it appears that he checked out during the shootout to me. He looked terrible on all 3 goals.

  5. I never compared him to Cechmanek..way to early for that.

But I stand by my original point...hisform/discipline/focus was terrible on that goal. With 40 seconds left in the period, tie game on the road, with a depleted line-up, they can't score from that place on the ice.

I'm not throwing in the towel, I'm not saying all is lost, and I'm not saying Bryz is not the answer. I will say this..he has to be better. IMO, he was "won" 1 game for us..the Pens game the other week. I thought he was outstanding in that game. Other than that, he has been average. For what he is getting paid and for what is expected of him, he needs to be better than average.

  6. How can the team be confident in front of him when they all know he's a nutcase and cannot be relied upon in goal ? Are we really as screwed as it looks with the goalie situation ?

Did notice the players reaction on that horrible 2nd goal he gave up? Two of them looked straight to the ceiling, almost like, "not again!" I'm not a goalie, and don't play one on TV, and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night. But is it TOO much to ask that when the opposing team has the puck behind our net, to put your effing stick on the ice, and close the 5-hole? For fu*ck's sake...Bryz was sitting on the goal line, stick in the air, and his legs as wide as a new bride on her honeymoon on that deflection.

  7. -Adrian Dater, the fine Avalanche beat writer from the Denver Post, asked Peter Laviolette today if he thought the art of the slapshot from a hard skating winger down the wall was a lost art. Lavvy had one gem of a response:

“I think the last real good one that we had, an old school, old-fashioned, slap drive was Jody Shelley’s in Atlanta last season,” Laviolette said. “It was world class, down the wing, blow it by you. It was epic. “Now, there’s time and space and gaps and everybody’s quick to defend and reloads are hard from behind, but he blocked a shot, got out of the defensive zone and down the wing and he was moving fast and hard and he just wound up and ripped it top shelf. It was a thing of beauty.”

Please tell me that is NOT an actual quote??!!!

  8. you are right. they are very well balanced and each player has bought into an extremely strong team concept. i don't mean to knock them that much. they don't have any game breakers, though, or the kind of offensive firepower that you generally figure is needed to keep up when your goaltending isn't, well, unnaturally good. minus thomas, they are still a team to be respected, but it's thomas that puts them over the top.

Have to agree with you on this, bud. I remember last year telling a buddy..no way Boston wins it. They have no offense, they have no PP, etc. His only comeback.."yeah, but they have Thomas". And he was right. They are such a hard team to gauge, think about it, they had to win 3 game 7's last year..2 in OT. Granted they won them all, and I'm not trying to take anything away from that, or their Cup...but it's not like they are the 27 Yankees. You look at the lineup, and think..yeah..they can be beat. Then they go out, and play defense that smothers the other team like a fat chick on a chicken bone, and if they breakdown Timmy T slams the door.

And Claude Julien STILL looks like Grimace, from the McDonalds' characters. No one will ever convince me otherwise. :D

  9. None of u even know what really happened stfu

Nice first post...and for the record, there is an eyewitness report.

The alleged assault occurred Dec. 9 at the Jack Kirrane Ice Skating Rink, where Milbury was acting as an assistant coach for the Boch Blazers, police said. His son plays for the team.

Milbury's son got into a tussle during a game and afterward the former Boston Bruin allegedly went on to the ice and "verbally berated and grabbed and shook" the alleged victim, the Boston Herald reported.

According to one eyewitness, Milbury -- who famously derided the "pansification" of hockey during a Hockey Night in Canada telecast in 2009 -- allegedly lifted the boy and shook him, yelling obscenities, before dropping him to the ice.

  10. So...more what if questions... Pronger is on LTIR for the remainder of the regular season. We get the "credit" for his cap hit. Suppose the Flyers trade for someone..someone pretty decent. If Pronger is cleared for the playoffs and comes of LTIR for the playoffs, there would be NO cap issue, correct, since the cap is calculated for the regular season only? Am I reading that correctly? Or does a player have to be off LTIR before the playoffs begin?

Doubtful Pronger comes back, IMO, but just wondering.

  11. this is from spector's hockey site: not saying I like the options thrown out here, but first time I've heard anyone mention Gonchar. No thanks...Sens can keep him.

Pierre LeBrun and Scott Burnside examined the options available to the Philadelphia Flyers to replace Chris Pronger, who’s out for the season and playoffs to post-concussion syndrome. The Flyers could take a closer look at which defenseman are available by the February 27th trade deadline. If Nashville’s Shea Weber or Ryan Suter are available they’d be obvious targets, but the Predators want to re-sign them. Ottawa’s Sergei Gonchar could be another target, while the Carolina Hurricanes could shop UFAs-to-be Tim Gleason, Jaroslav Spacek and Bryan Allen.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: They also noted the Flyers could get some cap relief by placing Pronger on LTIR, which would enable them to go over the cap ceiling to add another defenseman if required. If Pronger is forced to retire, however, his salary still counts against the Flyers cap, as he falls under the “over-35″ rule, but the Flyers could get around that by keeping him on LTIR. Don’t expect Weber or Suter to be wearing a Flyers uniform after February 27th, as the Preds won’t move either guy, especially if they’re still in the playoff chase. The Senators would love to dump Gonchar’s salary, but it remains to be seen if the Flyers would want to take him on, especially when they’ve also got to re-sign Matt Carle or lose him to free agency next summer. Gleason and Allen could be more affordable, short-term options. For now, Flyers GM Paul Holmgren won’t panic, as his team is still playing well, but he could take a good look at what’s available come mid-February in the trade market.
