  1. I know I'm going to get killed her because I'm out numbered 100-1 but both the Simmonds and Schenn hits were boarding penaltys. I thought Schenn's was actually worse seeing he had time to let up but decided not to. Simmonds should have got a penalty but nothing more than 2. Ennis turned and put himself in a bad spot. Actually 2nd time in a week he's done that. Officiating was brutal tonight though on both sides. Scott getting a 10 minute misconduct for talking to Rinaldo. Phantom unsportsmanlike on Brennan for idk what. Rinaldo penalty was a joke too. Refs wouldn't let them play.

  2. Don't over think this guys. The reason this was done now is a face saving move. Pegula was getting hammered by critics the honeymoon period is over. Last night the fans booed almost the entire game and the arena is silent almost every night now. Also with the way the McCormick waiving was handled this morning in his wife finding out via the Internet before McCormick had time to tell her. PR battle was getting ugly in Buffalo this buys Pegula some time to turn things around.

  3. Sabres called Cody McCormick off the ice today at practice and have waived him. Personally something seems fishy here. Who are they creating a roster spot for? Could be Leino, but last I heard he was likely out for the season. Maybe calling a player up, but could be a trade coming down. Could be nothing too, but has me digging.

  4. Last night was the first time in his post game press conference that I have ever heard Ruff seem defeated. He had no answers and was not his usual defensive self. I think even Ruff knows that his time is up and it's not working anymore. I wouldn't mind if Regier stays however if he will not let Lindy go then he needs to go too. The Sabres downfall for years have ben falling in love with their own players and afraid to try new things. Enroth and Stafford could have been moved within the last 2 years for good pieces and both players have no value now. Hecht is another example of the organization not being able to move on. When his contract expired after last season it should have never been discussed to bring him back. At 35 he has not value and a concussion history. Hecht taking a roster spot slows the development of Grigorneko because he has to sit when all goes bad Ruff goes to what he knows best. Brayden McNabb, Luke Adam, and Brian Flynn all sit in Rochester and could be helpful to this team. Sabres need to put the for sale sign up on the front lawn and starting trading pieces to maximize on value (Pominville, Sulzer, Leopold, and Regher). I have no problem with any of those players I listed as far as performance, but all have value now. Regher likely will not be moved because I think Pegula promised him of that when they brought him over from the Flames, but the other three I have no problem seeing them moved to bring in pieces. Pommer can be used in perhaps a Ryan O' Reilly trade.

New coach ideas: Ron Rolston, Dallas Eakins, Tony Granato

  5. I think it's a pretty simple fix. Sabres need a change in direction, they have a few players they can sell high on now. One player for example is Jason Pominville. Don't get me wrong I'm a big supporter of Pommer, but his trade value is very high in a season going nowhere. He has one year left on his deal and would show a change in course. Also Ruff needs to go, not a bad coach but 15 years of 0 championships is enough. Regier needs to maximize his assets now and not let the chance fly by like with Stafford a few years ago.

  6. Personally as a Sabres fan and I was at the game I'm fine with no suspension. Kaleta turned just before Brown hit him. Some responsibility is on the player who was hit. What I'm not ok with is Weber getting 2 min instigating 5 min fighting and a 10 min misconduct for standing up for his player. Took away a PP and the league won't suspend players then they should let players police themselves, but they won't let them do that either.

  7. The Buffalo Sabres entered the NHL in the 1970 expansion with the Vancouver Canucks. Throughout franchise history Buffalo has always been the team that has just missed. In 1975 the Sabres lost to the Flyers in the Stanley Cup Finals in six games. Buffalo wouldn't again reach the Finals until 1999 against Dallas and would again lose in six this time on a controversial goal known in Buffalo as "No Goal". In 2005-06 season Buffalo had arguably the best team in hockey, but would end up losing to the Hurricanes in 7 in the ECF due to an injury to 5 of the 6 regular defenseman. After 06-07 season the Sabres have since fell into the mediocre stages again as the cycle repeats itself. Sabres are still trying to recover from July 1 2007 when they lost Briere and Drury to UFA.

Through it all the Sabres fan base has remained loyal. Hockey continues to grow in the city of Buffalo becoming one of the strongest hockey markets in the NHL.

Through the years a lot of great hockey players have worn the Blue and Gold (and Red and Black for a few years). Here are some of the best players to wear Sabres sweater in franchise history:

    1. Gilbert Perrault- When you think of Sabres hockey in Buffalo two names come to mind. One is Gilbert Perrault. Perrault was selected first overall in the 1970 NHL Draft by the Sabres. In 1971 he won the Calder trophy as Rookie of the Year. For years Perrault headlined the French Connection line with Rene Robert and Rick Martin. That line lead the Sabres to it's first Stanley Cup appearance in 1975. Perrault had 512 career goals and was a 9 time NHL All-Star. He played in Buffalo from 1970 to 1987.

    2. Dominik Hasek- Here is the other name that comes to mind when thinking of Sabres hockey. The Dominator ruled the blue paint in Buffalo from 1992 to 2001. He was acquired in 1992 in a trade with Chicago. Hasek is one of the best goalies to ever play the game in the NHL and unfortunatley the Sabres were never able to capitalize with a Championship. Hasek won the MVP aware in 1997 and 1998. He won the Vezina six times with Buffalo; 94, 95, 97, 98, 99, and 2001. He has a career GAA of 2.13 and NHL career best save % of .922. Hasek was a six time all star and in my opinion the best player to wear a Sabres jersey.

    3. Rick Martin- The late Rick Martin was drafted 5th overall in 1971 by the Sabres. He would join Robert and Perrault forming the French Connection line in 1971. Martin had one of the best shots in the game during his career. He had 384 career goals and was a 7 time all star. He scored 44 goals or more 5 times in his career with Buffalo from 1971-1981.

    4. Rene Robert- Robert played in Buffalo from 1971-79. He had 284 career goals and was a two time All Star. Like Martin and Perrault, Robert's jersey was retired with the Sabres.

    5. Alexander Mogilny- The Russian Rocket defected from the USSR in 1989 to join the Sabres. He is most known in Buffalo for one of the most exciting seasons in team history when he scored 76 goals in the 1992-93 tying with Teemu Selanne for the NHL lead. Mogilny was a six time All Star and had 473 career goals.

    6. Pat Lafontaine- Lafontaine was a true fan favorite in his time with Buffalo from 1991-1997. He was the Sabres captain from 92-97. His number was retired with the Sabres in 2006. He had 468 goals in his NHL career. Most Sabres fans can hear RJ now...La la la la la la la la Lafontaine!

    7. Dale Hawerchuk- Hawerchuk joined the Sabres in 1990 and played in Buffalo until 1995. He is mostly known for his time in Winnipeg. He had 518 career goals and was a 5 time NHL All-Star.

    8. Dave Andreychuk- Andreychuk was another huge fan favorite in Buffalo. He was drafted 16th overall by Buffalo in 1982 and played with the Sabres until 1993, then returning for one more season in 2001. Andreychuk was the defination of a Power Forward. He had 640 career goals and has the most PP goals in NHL history with 274.

    9. Danny Gare- Gare was drafted by Buffalo in 1974 and was also a big part of the 75 cup run. He has the record for the fastest goal scored in your first NHL game scoring 18 seconds into his career debut against Boston. Gare scored 50 twice with Buffalo and had 354 career goals.

    10. Phil Housley- Housley was drafted in 1982 by Buffalo and played with the Sabres from 1982 to 1990. He was a 7 time NHL All Star and was a rock on the Sabres blue line for years. He had 338 career goals and 1232 career points.

Honorable Mentions: Mike Ramsey and Craig Ramsay

  8. 10.5 months of winter I love it. As if Buffalo is the North Pole. I really enjoy calling people for my job and they ask where I'm located and I say Buffalo and they respond with "Oh Buffalo! Is it snowing?!" and its July 12th. Happens at least once a week and I usually don't even respond to it anymore. However reading your post actually made me laugh, so I guess it still is a little funny. By the way for anyone really wondering it snows like 4 months (November, December, January, Feburary, and sometimes March).

  9. It's baby steps, but the City is starting to head in the right direction of being rebuilt. What they have done to waterfront so far is really nice. This new plan helps the possibility of getting an All-Star game in Buffalo, and also more of a destination for people looking to spend money on Friday and Saturday nights. Once the Bills get a new owner one day they can put a new stadium where the old Aud was and the city will really be on its way back :D (wishful thinking probably).

  10. A group led by Terry Pegula was given control of rebuilding the Webster Block in the City of Buffalo. Early reports is that is a 123 million dollar plan. The Pegula team would build two twin indoor rinks, hotel, resturant, a 965 space parking lot, and other property for lease. It is nice to see that Pegula not only cares about making the Sabres a winner, but about the city as well. Also helping rebuild a better city helps attract FA. See the story here...http://www.wivb.com/dpp/news/local/City-picks-Pegulas-Webster-Block-plan

  11. Take him out of the equation last year and the Yotes don't even make the playoffs. He leads by example. How would you feel if his signing money was 6 mil per? That is what it will be if they roll back the salaries by 20 percent.....

True Yotes are toast without him. 6 mil is tough, depends on the team. Buffalo no way because thats not what they need right now, they need a center and more scoring. If i was say Vancouver or Philly or Pitt or Detroit, I would probably do it, but not like it. I'd be ok with 2 years 6 million to 6.5, but at 4 to 5 years 6 million thats a bit much. However that's how contracts are done now he will get 4 years and 6+ somewhere.

  12. Doan is a player who can carry a team

Can he really carry a team though?? Don't get me wrong he's a great player, but not carry the team type player. He's had 30 goals twice and averages around 20 goals a season for his career. He has great leadership skills, but that puts a team over the top when they already have a solid team. Crosby, Malkin, Datsyuk, Toews, and Stamkos those guys carry teams. I personally wouldn't pay Doan more than 5 million esp at 36. I agree with you on the money point, these player contracts are way out of hand.

  13. This has bad new written all over it! I'm not overly concerned because he isn't leaving Phoenix anyways, but not a good sign the Sabres have not learned their lesson (Leino). If by some miracle Doan does come here then the Sabres just slapped the handcuffs on themselves for the next four years. I know Doan is an excellent leader, but I don't see what paying a 35 year old winger who will score around 20 goals 7.5 million dollars, when center is the major need.

  14. At this point I think the Sabres roster is set as is (still have to sign Ennis) or it will look waaay different. Point and case:

    Current Lineup:

    Vanek-Hodgson-Pommer

    Stafford-Ennis-Foligno

    Gerbe-Leino-Ott

    Kaleta-McCormick-Tropp/Scott

    Ehrhoff-Sulzer

    Myers-Regher

    Leopold-Sekera

Big Trade/s Lineup (Go big or go home version):

    Vanek-Hodgson-Pommer

    Ryan-Gagner-Foligno

    Gerbe-Grigorenko-Leino

    Kaleta-McCormick-Tropp/Scott

    Ehrhoff-Sulzer

    Myers-McNabb

    Leopold-Regher

The next week will be very interesting. If Ennis signs I think that will be a sign that the Sabres will go into camp with the current lineup. The roster as is I think puts the Sabres in a 7-12 spot in the East. A tougher lineup, but still lacks scoring which was a big issue last season.

  15. Why? People knock Philly for various things, but have you ever been to Buffalo?? It really is a miserable place to live.

Couldn't be farther from the truth, you have to live here first instead of listening to everything people say. NHL Players who still live in Buffalo and will when their career is over: Patrick Kane, Marty Biron, Michael Peca, Robyn Regher, Andrew Peters, Craig Rivet (hated he was traded to Buffalo at first), Jordan Leopold, Pat LaFontaine, Jay McKee, Teppo Numminen (before he was coaching), Ryan Miller (bought a house last year and spends 90% of the year in Buffalo w/ wife), Steve Ott (heard bad things before coming here and loves the city now) I can keep going but I think I made the point. Great people, great food, and great place to raise a family.

  16. Sabres 12th overall pick this season Mikhail Grigorenko has signed his entry level contract. Both first round picks Girgensons and Grigorenko are now under contract. Unlike Girgensons however, if Grigorenko does not make the team he will go back to the QMJHL with Quebec. The Sabres recently have been more connected to trying to acquire wingers. Could be a sign they are hoping one or both of these player make the opening night roster. Unless Grigorenko is a complete flop in training camp, I think he will be given the 8 game try out at least before he can be sent back to juniors. More info at www.sabres.com

  17. The Sabres second 1st round pick this year Zegmus Girgensons will not go to the University of Vermont and has instead signed his entry level contract. Girgensons has turned a lot of heads at Sabres Development Camp this week and could make the team. At this point Girgensons looks to be more likely than Grigorenko to make the club.
