  1. That fortune would likely change the face of any team. Adding a small piece shouldn't change the chemistry to much. I think the problem might be more that they are peaking a little early. I google it but only found your post (#3). Who was it?
Hal Lebowitz, longtime Cleveland baseball writer, in the baseball hall of fame in the journalism wing, grew up reading him make a bad for decades baseball team entertaining. He signed off on every column with that little quote. Gotta remember the old guys every now and then.
  2. As a wings fan, good to see the blues lay an egg today. Chicago is desperate to right the ship, a win for them meant the world and they played like a desperate team. I was looking at the schedule, the blues have only 8 home games compared to 23 on the road down the stretch, at home they rival the wings. On the road they rival the Jackets. I see the blues as a solid number four seed that nobody wants to face in the first round.....

  3. Simple asnwer, yes. Love the line of Helm, Abdelkader and Miller (The HAM line, hope it catches on, lol). I have said few kind words about Abdelkader but he has really turned into a player this year.Problem is this should be our fourth line, we need another true top six/nine forward preferably a center to make it work, We need Derek Roy from Buffalo.

I see him as a Robert Lang type of pickup, a Larionov type of pickup. Can center anywhere from lines one through three, could be had for a combo of Andersson/Nyquist and/or picks. allows the HAM line to go back to their natural role, everything flows. I see the lines as follows..

    Franzen Datsyuk Bertuzzi

    Z Filpulla Hudler

    Cleary Roy Homer

    Miller Helm Abdelkader

As far as defense, we could use a depth d-man, Commodore has been terrible and while I trust our six we play daily an injury here could cripple us. Problem is when you look at the returns for Gill and Kubina it is a sellers market, but if we can steal a d-man for the right price (doubtful) we should do it.

  4. Strictly pulling this out of mid air, but a trade offer that makes perfect sense for both teams, keeping in mind I am a Red Wings fan so at least impartial:

    Carle and JVR

    for

    Suter.

Perfect trade for both. Suter is sooooo gone at the end of the season, its had to be hard being one of the top ten defensemen in the game or better and living in Webers shadow, in a city that gets next to no publicity anyway.Carle and Suter are both UFA at the end of the season, Carle at least along with Gill gives the Preds a suitable replacement for Suter, while JVR steps right up into a top six forward spot and provides something in return for Suter long term, even if they choose not to resign Carle or if he winds up signing elsewhere. Suter is EXACTLY what Philly needs, he plays well on both special teams and along with Grossman overall fix the PK problems that have killed your team, and take a half a goal a game off the goalies stat line. What do you guys think?

  5. I think the Red Wings would like to feature Tatar a bit as trade bait, I know 22 in a row at home, some fans are saying dont mess with chemistry but truth is the Wings need depth, another scorer and maybe another defensemen if the asking price isnt too high.

Cant believe the return Gill and Grossman just fetched. I read a rumor that with picking up Gill and having the kid defensemen coming on like Josi and Ellis that the Predators would entertain offers for Suter, who is an UFA at the end of the season. Almost everyone colors him gone, with the right deal Nashville could challenge for a cup, but what would a team have to give up for him? I dont see him being dealt in the west, in the east the flyers have a desperate need for him, and the Preds might be able to command a fortune.

I dont know what to think of the Blues. I give them credit, they laid an absolute egg to the Bluejackets the other evening, then bounced back by beating the hell out of the Isles. Great team defense, everyone responsible in their own zone. As far as two way play the most underrated player I have seen this season is Vladimir Sobotka, he is plus 14, taking on other teams first line forwards. Watch him sometime, he plays like Bob Gainey.

The Hawks are in Danger of missing the playoffs, something I cant believe I am saying. The Hockey news ran an article about how good their defense is shortly before it competely collapsed, all the off season signings except Montador look bad and the schedule is unfavorable down the stretch. They have the money and prospects, they will likely have to overpay with both to salvage the season.

Columbus is looking to dump, Vermette, R.J., Paulsson, but the guy I would look to deal no matter how he is playing now is Brassard. He quit on his coach and didnt show up until Arniel was canned. I wouldnt want him on any team I liked.

Stay well and see you somewhere I hope (Whos famous quote every week was that?).

  6. Well I compare the Nash situation to the Wild a few years ago with Gaborik. No doubt the best player in franchise history, but the team moved on and while it may kill you guys if Gabby hoists the cup with the Rangers this year, it really was time for him to move on. Unfortunately Nash is buried in Columbus, a city that by all accounts he enjoys, but if he is ever going to play on a winner he likely needs to move on, and they have sooooooo many holes, if the CBJ ever hopes to be a winner they will likely have to trade him.

As far as Zidlicky, his best friend in the game since childhood is Patrick Elias, but you cant force a GM to trade you to a certain team, this is not the NBA, that is what free agency is for. If he wants to move on and play with his best friend, at the end of the season, that is their choice. Right now Fletcher has the cards, though by Zidlicky expressing his desire to be a Devil and his own upcoming ufa it likely hurt his trade value for other teams who would expect resigning him to be difficult. So by playing it the way he has, Zidlicky has hurt potential return for the wild, and if you cannot get at least what Grossman and Gill just brought in return I think Fletcher should hold on to him out of spite.

  7. @yave1964-

I think many of us Flyers fans have only a very cursory familiarity with him (if any at all). Good to hear from someone who sees him play much more. Do you think he was wort a 2nd AND a 3rd??

If we can resign him for a reasonable price, then I have no problem for the picks. He looks like a decent 4th d-man that is stay and home and can help offset a Carle type.

If you can resign him he is a good buy for a second and third, market is thin, there are twice as many buers as sellers right now. I was surprised Dallas did this deal and I am sure it took a second and third to get him.
  8. Keep the shootout, but only award two points period. Think about it, the NBA, NFL and MLB all have extra time, either overtime or extra innings. A win is a win and a loss is a loss. I dont think a team should be rewarded for a loss, we are the only real sport that does this......

  9. Good pickup for you guys. He brings absolutely nothing to the table offensively but is a solid, Brad Stuart type of shut down defensemen. Your penalty killing problems may not be over but are a long way towards being solved with this guy. In a day and age when special teams win games, Grossman is a great pick up, take that from a Wings fan who has admired his play for years......

  10. With Rick Nash I want to say buyer beware here. Let me throw some stats at you. Rick Nash 649 GP 227 goals 250 assists 527 points. Thomas Vanek 522 GP 224 goals 205 assists 429 points. If you project Vanek out into 649 games he passes the stats that Nash has right now. Vanek is 6'2 207 lbs and Nash is 6'4 216 lbs. Almost the same player/career. I love Vanek he's my favorite player, but is anyone paying a top 6 forward/dman (or 2), a top prospect, and a high draft pick for Thomas Vanek? Also Nash makes 7.8 million for the next 6 years.

First let me say that I love Vanek. He is high on my wish list of players I would love to see the wings pick up at the deadline. But let me make this clear, he is no Nash. Nash is one of the top ten Wingers in hockey, a leader as well. He has been cursed by an inept organization and often throughout his career he is the only player on the team who knows how to put the puck in the net.
  11. Dont know where Nash is headed if anywhere, any team whose best player is a winger is in trouble, you build down the middle for stanley cups. Wings have the best record in the game, winning with Datyuk, Z, Helm down the middle. Our wingers are lead by Franzen but other than that are very average (I admit I hope for an upgrade at the deadline). I see teams lead by Ovie or Iginlia ir Nash or Kovie and know that they arent going anywhere more often than that. Look at the best teams, center, a top stud defensemen and an above average goalie wins cups. Look at all the most recent cup winners and how they were built.... Chicago was kind of an exception with Toews leading the way, they still had Hossa, Kane sharp and big buff as well as Versteeg on wing and very ordinary goaltending but they were the exception.

  12. You're kind of proving my point here...Rinaldo did EXACTLY that. Difference is, Kronwall left his feet and took a good distance into his hit on Briere.

Rinaldo targeted the head, that is the difference. Honestly I felt Kronwall left his feet against Brierre but didnt target the head, but was kind of surprised to see not even a fine for that hit.

  13. I posted elsewhere that Kronwall is the best clean hitter in hockey, when you are carrying the puck with him and Stuart on the ice keep your head up or you are gonna be drilled. Good clean viscous hockey, well within Shannys new rules.

Rinaldo is a good, 1 goal- 150 penalty minutes this year, last year at adirondack he had three goals and 330 PIMs. Yeah, I know fun energy guy but this is a team that is terrible at killing penalties and he is wasting a roster spot for a real nhler. He pinballs around until he hits something and then gets mad when he gets a penalty. A bad team trying to enthuse up the fans can afford someone like him but a team hoping to contend for the cup needs to do better.

  14. Haha nice, I also collect lots of hockey cards. Btw do you have any Alexander Frolov cards? Maybe we can work out a trade or something? ;)

Well if you are serious I am sure I have 20-30 Frolov cards, you are welcome to them, let me know.
  15. 21!!! Wish I was a t a casino right now, I know what I would be playing. Great team defense, up 2-0 going into the third I thought the Wings laid back a bit more than I would have liked, the Stars carried the play but with team defense they only allowed Dallas one two shots in the first twelve minutes before we started pushing back. Wow I hope we can convince Stuart to stay....

  16. Rinaldo is not a hockey player. Last year at Adirondack he had 3 goals and 331 penalty minutes. The year before in the OHL he had ten goals and 255 penalty minutes. This year his first in the nhl 1 goal and 156 penalty minutes with a team that is struggling to kill penalties. He is small, bounces around like a pin ball and provides energy but I think at best he could be Sean Avery but I doubt he will have half of the career Avery had.

Let me address the Kronwall hit, it was clean, he is the best open ice hitter in all of hockey. You come along the boards with your head down and the puck your gonna get nailed by Kronwall or Stuart. I love those type of players, that is why I always grudgingly admired Pronger, he KILLED the wings, but he plays the game hard and viscious and in the grey area of the rules but wow I would have loved to have seen him in a Wings uniform all these years. That is what the Flyers are missing this year and I actually root for the Flyers in the East and hope they can find the right defenseman at the deadline. Problem is other than guys like Tyutin and Lydman I dont know who is gonna be out there.

  17. Schenn and Simmonds for Richards. Bet the Kings would love to take that one back. As a wings fan watching the game the other night I really felt Schenn was the best forward on the ice the other night.

Rinaldo deserved his suspension. Two fines last week then this chump hit on Eriksson. He is the worst kind of goon in the game today and wont be around long because he doesnt look like he can play.

Losing Pronger killed your team. Timmonen called out the guys the other day but the front office needs called out for not making a move to improve the defense.I am not a fan of Bryz or Bob but if you guys dont add someone nasty in front of them you will be a first round out. I keep hearing Schenn for JVR and think that is wishful thinking by insane leaf fans but there has to be a defenseman or two out there who can be had without giving up a top young player like him.....
