  1. I think OP is correct. I just don't see them buying out Bryz this summer. They will give him one more year to prove himself... a full year. It's too much 'real' dollars for Snider to swallow and throw away for nothing. I just can't see them doing it until they have no other choice. Next summer's buyout deadline will be the time they either do it or we're totally stuck with him.

And.. as Polaris has said... Bryz has actually been one of the Flyer's better players this year. That doesn't say much for the rest of the team because he def has NOT been a $5m+ goalie. He's had his moments of Bryziance, but he's also shown his below average side a bit too much and at all the wrong times.

Sure they'll have salary cap troubles in the future.. just like every other team in the league.

Or not. Staal was supposed to cause cap "problems". I'd say that worked out well. Next cap problems up are Letang and/or Malkin. With the current roster, they won't be able to afford both in 2014 assuming Malkin gets an offer equal to Crosby and Letang is looking for $6 million to $7 million per.

So Letang gets dealt for picks/prospects and next crop of defencemen step in. Or maybe a Paul Martin gets dealt and his $5,000,000 hit goes to Letang's raise and the salary of his (Martin's replacement).

I think this is where Shero is way ahead of Holgren. I mean...Laughton over Maatta when you already have a solid crop of young forwards but have needs on the blue line?

I just kinda meant that in the generic way of the fact that ALL teams will have cap problems. The cap inherently creates problems that every team has to deal with. I didn't mean that they specifically have any more problems than anyone else in the league.

Flyers will surely have their share next year and I think I'd gladly take Pitt's particular set of cap problems over ours any day. The next few years are going to be rough ones for our Fly guys.

i think it's pretty obvious, or it should be, to even the most biased fans that Shero has GM'd circles around Homer and co. I hate the pens... boy do i, more than any other team in the league. However, you can't help but be jealous of what Shero has accomplished over there. He's 'all in' this year and I can only sit back and actually admire what he's been able to accomplish.

Sure they'll have salary cap troubles in the future.. just like every other team in the league.

  4. And judging by the reports and that he got to choose where he was going between here and Boston... I'm sure there was discussion with Shero about what the future would bring to some level. He'll be half that salary next season if he stays here. If not, it's a nice rental but a much higher price felt that way.

gotta say.. i think these are great moves by Shero. your team was already good and he just added a few key components to a good cup drive. shored up your D a little and i think Morrow will drink from the fountain of youth during the playoffs.... you could have a deep run. as painful as that will be for us here to watch.

  5. Now I respect Giroux's talent. But I have read a LOT of Flyers fans' threads here so I have to ask...

Is there any chance that everyone's career year last year pertains to Giroux as well? That Jagr's play is what really elevated Giroux to such high levels? That he won't be producing like that again most likely and will stay roughly a point per game guy? (Not that that's a bad thing just lower than your expectations?

sure... great players always elevate those around them... just ask Messier. i mean.. of course he was still a great player, but he wouldn't be THAT high up on the all time scoring list if it wasn't for his good buddy Gretzky.

I mean.. let's be real here... Kunitz is NOT the next coming of Jari Kurri, but he's certainly benefitting quite nicely on lines with Malkin and Crosby.

  6. it's been a what? 2 month season? you're going to trade him based on that? AND it's his sophomore slump year? he gets a mulligan this year.. from me at least. of course i'm always listening if he could be moved for the right D man.... but, that's a big IF.

Entirely reasonable, but Briere isn't quite on the same level of a Lappy, Gagne, Timonen, Kapanen, Rinaldo (too soon?) type of player where they earn their respect each and every day. That is why people are being a dick towards Danny Boy - laziness. It isn't quite as personal as Bryz and people haven't forgotten what he can do for the team, it's frustration over inconsistency and expectations. And, it hasn't been just this season either.

well... it's very hard for any of us to say that Briere is being 'lazy'. it very well may be the case, but I cannot say for sure either way. whatever the reasons are... it's pretty obvious he's having a lousy season for us right now. maybe it's injury, maybe it is laziness... i still think he should be treated(by mgmt) with the respect he deserves for being a veteran leader and putting up the PPG numbers he has in the playoffs for us.

Not only that, but it seems like guys here would like to dump him for a bag of pucks when this guy is a VERY valuable deadline trade commodity. no matter how dismal his play has been this season(except in berlin weirdly), i would hope that mgmt is talking him UP.

  8. Since the playoffs do not look like a possibility this season, Flyers management must go to Briere with the following mandate; "waive your NMC and accept a trade to a playoff contender immediately or you will be a healthy scratch the remaining 18 games and your contract will be bought out in the Summer."

i feel like there's no reason to be a dick to him. i mean... it wasn't all that long ago that he was our playoff hero. the guy has things to bring to the table, it's just not working out for him this year and especially since we won't be IN the playoffs to watch him do his thing.

However... there are many teams who WOULD appreciate his talents in the playoffs and would probably overpay to get them. His cap hit is pretty high, but the actual dollars to be paid in the final 2 years could make him a very attractive pickup for any playoff bound team that needs clutch scoring. He's not just going to be a rental, which ... i would think... would increase the asking price for him.

In short.. he's our most attractive trade asset as the deadline looms and Flyer's management should be shopping him aggressively. I'm sure that if they go to danny and say.. look.. we're gonna be in rebuild mode here and we wanna give you the chance to win a cup with a great organization(Habs? Canucks? Kings?) how about waiving that NMC.

Look.. players get it.. if he's asked to waive, he knows his time there is done. the only *real* implication of a NMC is that he gets to ensure he's not marooned in hockey purgatory(columbus) and gets to choose his ultimate playoff bound destination.

  9. Yeah.. I tried to come along with this article and go with it's thinking. But, NO... it's a bad idea. He's still a young defenseman and is coming off some pretty major injuries. To say that his body is already in it's 30's is really just him trying to come up with *something*.

In other words... this is a TERRIBLE IDEA. Yeah.. give up one of our only young good defensemen. Brilliant.

  10. In all seriousness... if the Flyer's actually acquire ANY players before the deadline, NOT part of dumping and rebuilding, then I've really lost the plot of this entire organization's thinking. We are NOT making the playoffs and the ONLY sensible course of action is to try to fleece other teams who might want some playoff run assets and get whatever we can.

Draft picks and dumping salary should be a priority.
