  1. Did you notice how he was healthy enough to play game three... But Berube didn't start him....

Never said it made emery bullet proof (and he obviously wasn't), just that it was a factor that warranted consideration (which the coach obviously thought it was).

    And stuff.

I did... then I remembered how you said that Coaches and players tell it exactly how it is to interviewers.

  2. I can't blame Roo at all yeah is he being double teamed and hit every timeyes, even superstars can get shut down. Look at the Pitt Jackets Series  neither Malkin or CIndy have goals and have been pretty much quiet and shutdown and they are super stars. What has happened is the rest of the team has picked their lack of scoring and now have 2-1 lead in the series. The Flyers need to do the same. Where the hell are the other 6+ 20 goal scorers at?

They're out there...  taking dumb penalties! Honestly, I thought Read was a scratch in gm1 and 2... didn't see him until very late in the games. I have to take a look at the numbers, but it sure does seem like Berube is runnin the 4th line out there quite a lot.

  3. I know that players are taught to take things one game at a time, and coaches use that a lot to keep them focused on the immediate task at hand.

So, on Friday, that would be Game 4.

But does anyone else get the feeling that Game 4 is a must-win for the Flyers? Win that game, and you've got some confidence back, an even series, and take it from there. Lose that game, and there's no way in my mind that they'll beat this Rangers team 3 straight times.

To me, the Flyers season hinges on Game 4.

Yes, absolutely is a 'must win'. When you consider their problems at MSG, recently, the last thing they can afford to do is to go back up there down 3-1. It just seems like it might be rollover time at that point. Tbh, I think they broke me about half way through the 3rd period last night. I just came to the conclusion that the Rangers have already taken hold of this series and it's theirs to lose. I mean, beyond the obvious series score... they've taken the psychological lead by beating us up and down the ice. G has 2 shots against them in what? 6 games? that is the definition of demoralizing.

  4. To me it's about puck support. There are times when we've turned the puck over in their end, or are close to doing so, and what is needed is a teammate who is right there in support.

Too often they are not. Noticed this several times last night, which is frustrating because I didn't think our entries and original forecheck were as bad as some are saying in this thread. I think it's just support.

This has been a problem most of the year. They tend to play too fancy and G is a prime offender in that. They give up too many shot opportunities looking for that perfect shot that's never there. Fancy play syndrome has been a big problem.

  5. The Rangers may be favored to win but this series shouldn't look so lopsided the way it does now...possession time, FO wins/losses, SOG and finally, goals-for/goals-against. Even when we do out-shoot them it doesn't matter - or out-hit them. The shots hardly challenge Lundqvist and the hits don't translate into attack time.

The Rangers are quicker to the puck, stronger on the puck and they stay focused on putting it on net. They don't waste shifts. The Flyers play as if they have nothing but time. Last night the Flyers lost that game in the first 10 minutes. But we've seen this movie before. Sometimes it looks the Flyers want to ease into the game and the opposition takes advantage.

'ease into the game' might be an understatement. They seemed to have eased into the series... didn't really start playing until about midway through 2nd period of gm2. That has to be the most frustrating hallmark of this team.... Late starts.

  6. I say scratch GrossmanN and dress Brandon Manning and i know you're like WWWWWWWOOOOOAHHHHH.....

....but hear me out first the Flyers right now have had trouble getting shots through so Manning may fix that...

...maybe he almost lead the Phantoms in SOG with 198 (8 goals and 23 assist) in 73 games pretty damn impressive for a Dman Akeson for comparison had 204. So maybe he can help with being more mobile than Grossmann and help get some shots on net...it is worth a try i think.

Doing the same thing yet expecting different results is crazy....i'd look into it.

It's AN idea. GrossmanN is seemingly hobbled from injury still. He is looking less mobile than usual. Call me crazy, but I wouldn't mind suiting up Gill. Sure, he's slow as dirt, but he can clear the porch. I thought he stepped in pretty nicely at the end there... and really, what do we have to lose? We're losing this series. Why do we look so bad? The Rangers are simply the better team right now. They're playing better than us in almost every area of the ice, so we don't even deserve to win this thing right now.

  7. I think this is par for the course this season and last.   We have a bunch of goal scorers but we do not have a single "pure goal scorer" on the Team.   This Team needs someone that can put up goals consistently.   I said it before this team's offense is feast or famine and it has been that way for a long time.   Teams will focus on G and let the rest of the Team try to beat them - shut down G and the rest is pretty easy.  This is exactly what the Rangers are doing in this series.

If the Flyers can get secondary scoring they have a good shot at winning the series.  We are in the "famine" stages of our offense.   As much as I like Jake he is not going to take over a game.   B Schenn has been pretty much missing along w/ Read...  Simmonds can score but he needs to work in close and the Flyers really have not got pucks through to Lundy...  Simmonds is one of my favorite players but he can be neutralized if pucks are not getting through.

Offseason should start w/ defense and finding a scoring winger.

Read has not only been missing, he's just been playing plain bad. I'm surprised no one's looking into his head shot on Carcillo as well. or.... maybe they are?

  8.

I sure hope Giroux can back up his promises by taking his game up another level. The Flyers will not go anywhere without Giroux leading the way, that much is clear. St. Louis has stepped up for the Rags... Giroux needs to one up him.

What do you guys think of Giroux's play so far in the series?

well... his track record IS pretty good with such predictions. Let's hope he's right on again. We need him to be cause this series is over if they don't win Friday night.

  9. Iirc, @aziz has first hand experience there. He's a goalie.

Also, let's not pretend Mason wasn't shaky just before his injury, or impervious to shots directly at him. Emery was vulnerable to those cross ice chances a little more than all goalies, but he is getting all the square ones.

I like Mason, a lot, but let's not make him out to be Hasek just because he isn't Bryzgalov, Leighton, Biron, the bad Boucher, Esche, Burke, Niittymaki against anyone other than Atlanta, Cechmanek pre-meltdown, Little, etc.

uh.. I've played some goalie too. I still don't think that makes either one of us qualified to be an authority on the topic here on a fan forum. Not that you're saying that... Just as I'm not claiming Mason is the next coming of Hasek either. In fact, this topic has sort of gotten out of hand as far as over-analysis.

It's pretty simple.... Mason has been our #1 all year. He's played better than Emery all year. His numbers bare that out. I dunno why we're even having this discussion, other than it's a non-game day.

I'll just leave this little quote here from Emery himself..."We talked about it," Emery said. "I'm always mindful of how the other team plays. That's not to say that if the guy has the puck normally I'm focused on that guy and you want to be aware of what else is around kind of secondary. I still kind of approach things the same way."

So there you have it... Emery is NOT focused on each individual player. So that would seem to indicate that it's overstated to suggest he has a read on players now that he's played them 2 games in a row.

And... from Berube... speaking to the point that it(the cross-ice passing) was a team adjustment... NOT a goalie adjustment.

Coach Craig Berube said Sunday his team did a better job taking away the cross-ice passes in the final two periods.

"On the first two goals they made the seam passes, we were outnumbered," he said. "They're a good attack team. Their defense is very active up in the rush and it opens things up, gets you spread out. Our guys did a better job with sticks and time and space. We didn't back in so much, I thought our gaps were better. That's real important against this team, having good gaps and not giving them a whole lot of time with the puck."

  10. I don't think it's as easy as saying "Mason is the better goalie, play him" when he's healthy. If Emery was playing outstanding hockey, and stole both games with shut outs, you guys wouldn't want to ride that momentum? And what if Mason is still feeling the effects from what we have to presume was a concussion? The only argument for me would be, has Emery played well enough to warrant being called the "hot hand" right now? I'm not too sure...

That's kinda my whole point. Mason is THE better goalie. I think he proved that over the course of the season, hands down. However, Emery has played well enough to win both games. Last game, he played very well. So, that's great... everything is going according to plan. That's why he was brought in... for this very situation, to backup Mason.

If Mason isn't 100%, then I think we can feel comfortable to let Emery play again without much worry. But, again... Mason is the starter if he's 100%.

  11. @Bakanekimiwa

could be.  or, he could look at how it looks like emery went to school over 4 periods, and suddenly was shutting down the cross ice onetimer because he has come to recognize when they are setting that up.  after period one yesterday, the rags didn't have an inch to look at when switching ice like that.  they still tried several times, but saw a flyers crest staring at them each time.

playing against a group of guys is the best scouting report possible.  if you don't think that has any impact....  and stuff.

Emery was still slow on the cross ice, they didn't execute it fast enough because our D adjusted the coverage.... and stuff. Mason will be in net... because, well... we all like stats around here, until we don't, and Mason has the bestest stats ... and stuff.

  12. true if you are playing NHL 2014.  humans, though, work differently.

Yeah.. I wouldn't know, I don't play it. But, thankfully Berube will use logic and reason, other than... gee, Emery has played these guys recently. I think Berube will just take a look at how Emery's lateral movement is easily exploited and Mason gives us a stronger option in net... you know... because of his numbers and stuff.

  13. They were called for embellishment, which is exactly what they did. You said earlier they we were bad calls.  They were not.  The missed McDonagh waiving his hands in the air, otherwise there should have been three.  The announcers had a long discussion players doing that to attempt to draw penalties - it's disrespectful to the fans, themselves and the game of Hockey.

Speaking of which. I don't see a lot of talk here about McDonagh. Clearly, the Flyers(primarily G) are really annoyed with his embellishments. As I am as well. He's giving Cindy a run for his money on trying to let the fan in 703 know he's been slashed. He's been a disgrace, IMO. Becoming a great D man, but also becoming a Diva.

  14. I see this as at least a rational argument, but I really think it's overstated.  Enough that it wouldn't even enter the discussion for me.  Primarily because, for me, if Mason is 100% there isn't even a discussion.

The game they are playing is trying to shoot the puck in the net.  The shooters have  had two games to know what kind of game the goalie is playing, individual tendencies, and shooting holes.  Changing this up makes this aspect a complete wash.  The Rangers were clearly trying to exploit Emery's slower lateral movement and succeeded, particularly on the MSL goal.  The problem is that in real time, this isn't always an easy thing to accomplish.  But in the end, the "knowing the game, individual tendencies" thing works both ways and is, therefore, a wash so it's back to the fact this is not a debate between two goalies who were used somewhat evenly and had somewhat similar numbers, etc.  It's between a clear starter that has missed a handful of games for embellishment and a guy who has been a clear backup (and for a reason).    It's Wayne Stephenson vs. Bernie Parent for me (Emery is not Stephenson and Mason is certainly not Parent, so I'm just talking defined roles--before someone retorts with some sort of other comparison).

If Mason is not 100%, no reason to rush him based on what we've seen.  But at 100% I don't see a merited argument.  I do see it as a right and a WTF??

this is classic fan forum fodder(FFF tm) ... there's no conversation in Berube's head... it's Mason when he's healthy. All this talk about knowing the tendencies of the shooters is a bunch of hullabaloo(tryin to keep it pc here). Mason is the better goalie.

If you don't think the Rangers would love to have another crack at Emery goin post to post, you're not paying attention.

  15. well then you and I are watching different GIFs that's all I can say. What you're saying happened just didn't happen. [edit: it's nowhere in the video evidence anyway.]

that's what's I'm sayin at this point... this is basically an argument over reality at this point. We need independent verification for one side here.

  16. We won. That's about all I can say about it. Was not even close to a great game by them and they still pulled it out. Emery was great and avg at the same time, but he made some huge timely saves. I still go with Mason as well, however, I'm feeling less bad if Mason needs another day to be perfect.

Real classy move by Berube how he handled the kid Akeson. Putting him out to start and having him on that PP unit, I mean.. you just can't buy that kind of class.

We're in the driver's seat now, going back home, but we need to play a lot better from here on out.

  17. Aww come on you meant that! Lol

    I never said faking...

come on man. i was kidding about blocking. i meant that very me•ta•for•ically

how many playoff games does he have to sit out before you can admit that your story is ludicrous?

  18. Emery was fine in game one. I want Mason, but Mason would not have won game one for the Flyers.

i agree absolutely. i just feel that Mason, game in and game out, gives us a better chance to win. Razor certainly played well enough to give us a chance to win and I don't fault him. EOD, the goalie wasn't the difference last game and our guys need a better attack and better team D. simple as that, just do everything better... lol.
