I'm sorry. LTIR = long term injured reserve. LTIR is a very complex system, but the simplest way to describe it is to say that it allows teams to take plays who will be out long term and set aside their cap hit, allowing the team to acquire replacement players. The last few years, right before the trade deadline, Vegas places Mark Stone and his $10M cap hit on injured reserve and then acquire players equalling that cap hit. This year, it was Tomas Hertl, Noah Hanifan and Anthony Mantha.

The moment the regular season ends, Vegas then reactivates Stone and so, in the case of Vegas vs Dallas, it's one team with a payroll of $83M up against a team with a payroll about $10M over the salary cap...

And they do this every year.

It has gotten out of hand in all sports.  Watching Tampa hanging on by a thread.  Well they just scored and likely extended it.

  2. Well I’m hoping the Leafs win tonight.  They always tried to sell the Leafs vs Sabres as a rivalry here but I never bought it.  There really is no rivalry and the Sabres have always been a thorn in their side.  I would like to see Toronto win now that my teams are long gone.  But that’s not likely.  Not that they don’t have the talent .  I guess we see what happens tonight.  I know Boston has been waiting for the playoffs to get payback for last year and they want Florida.  They may just get them.  I guess Carolina have kind of gotten no respect.  Except in Vegas as Jack reminded us.

  3. Im now likely to show up again and wear my damn Jack Eichel Jersey I paid $200 for.  So pissed.  But its an NHL jersey.  A Sabres road jersey.  I wish I could change the name from Eichel to Roy who also wore number 9.  Could a taylor pull that off?  I doubt it.  How does tht prick Adams still have the GM job?  Its worse than that coach the Detroit Lions kept for ages.  Some teams just dont fire .  Well now that Lindy is here, I expect he will give Adams some damn advice.  Go get veteran forward or two.  That can score 25-30. Give up the number one pick if you must.  We have enough number one picks on this young team.  We have Power, Dahlin, Cozens who of course was not a number one in the league but was for the Sabres.  Paterka and Quinn together will be potent.  Thomson and Skinner.  I sure wish we could land a guy like Breyden Schenn.

Congrats Rick. Does this mean the Lumina is coming out of retirement too ? 😉

This reference is a nod to Rick and the other long time followers of this site. Other than his Buffalo proclivities, I have enjoyed years of back and forth with him in many hockey discussions.

Likewise!  No the Lumina is in Chevy heaven.  I now drive a 22 Equinox.  Had to buy a new one after a young girl plowed into my rear end on railroad tracks 2 years back. Seat belt saved me.
New news is I have an ice pack on as I watch some playoffs, need myelogram in a month, I’m certain it’s herniation at C6/7, fusion likely coming.

I!!  I got the sweet news yesterday!  I still feel bad for Don Granato.  Lindy will win.  Has a solid goalie.  Yes, need to get a couple forwards.  No clue when draft lottery is or how deep draft is?

    Hooooooly Kay Rap.....

    What's next?
Ryan Miller out of retirement to lead them in net?
Matthew Barnaby for their top six?

But YOU CAN'T have Dave Andreychuk....he is happy doing intermission work for the TB Lightning!

Man...the power of @Buffalo Rick wishful thinking... :bigteeth:

The Sabres will take a step forward next year.  I believed they were on the way with either Granato or Lindy

I will say this... I don't think the Rangers are as good as a lot of people give them credit for. They play in a division with only one other team that's good. They had middling xGoals%, Scoring Chance% and High Danger%... We don't generally define the best teams as the ones who give up more (and better) scoring chances than their opponent.

Agree. I think the Leafs would beat the Rangers.  I am sure they will win the series vs Washington but Id be surprised if they made it farther

No, I'll stand by that. The Isles were bad, but their goal differential was "only" -17. Both are weak playoff teams, but you have to go back decades to find a team in the playoffs that gave up so much more than they got, and there's a linear relationship between goal differential and winning.

Usually yes.  Bad luck early for Leafs in game one last night.  I know you hate the Leafs.  I hope by some miracle they win.  I  think they will give Boston a fight at the least.  I believe that between your Oilers, Winnipeg and Vancouver, at least one makes it to final ending Canada drought.  Vancouver has not been as good as they were earlier.  Winnipeg has been pretty solid, maybe the best chance they have had in ages?   And then there is McDavid.  The Leafs have Matthews.  69 goals.  I just can’t figure them out.  One night they can beat anyone and many nights they just don’t show up.

As far as I can tell, the 2024 Caps are the worst playoff team of the salary cap era. Most years, there's a playoff team with a goal differential of something in the territory of -5 to -15 at worst. The Caps are -37.

edit - only now do I see @SaucyJack had mentioned the same thing. I'll stop backtracking through Hockey Reference.    lol

Quite a stretch to say they are the worst.  I’m They did play well at times this year.  I would not say they are the worst in all those years?  The Islanders don’t deserve to be in .  I wouldn’t say they are any better?  Does it matter?  Both will be gone in first round.

Do not expect another #8 over #1 here, like Panthers over Bruins last year.

This year’s #8 in the East has had season-long difficulties in finishing an adequate % of good scoring chances.  Caps PxP man Joe Beninati even mentioned it late in the 2nd period on Monday night, in a 1-0 game where the Caps should have been 3-0 or better on Boston.

At least at the very end, Washington back-checked very well, limiting chances by their higher-skilled opponents, earning low-scoring victories.  That’s their one forté this season.  Their record in 1-goal games is something like 13-2.   It is so rare to see Washington blow anyone out, while they get blown out with some regularity.

Hence the worst team +/- of any playoff team since 1991, back when 16 of 21 qualified.  (Or so I heard said on TV today.)

Maybe Ovechkin can bag an OT winner for the first time.

Haven’t decided on the spread yet, but it would surprise to see the Rags lose this.  (President’s Trophy curse notwithstanding.)

My Sabres beat Washington two straight down the stretch.  I voted Rangers in 5.  It could be 4.

  11. Seems like the Flames 🔥 fan couldn’t post this fast enough!

TOTALLY NOT DESERVED was this firing!   I do not see comments by Adams so maybe , hopefully, his head rolls next?  He is the one that deserved to be fired, not Granato.  If healthy, this young team will get in next year unless the firing of Granato comes back to bite them.

    Fire Adams NOW!

No, this is one where perception, particularly from people who don't watch many western games, doesn't match reality. You'll hear that the Oilers can't defend AND have terrible goaltending, but they have the 9th-lowest GA/GP in the NHL, and the 5th-lowest since the coaching change.

Then we should see them in finals
