yave1964
Straight outta left field..... Filip Hronek is a nice puck moving defender who has long had a rep for trying to do too much with the puck and coughing it up giving up odd man rushes the other way, this year he seems to have found the perfect defensive partner and is having a damn fine season, and is signed for two more years on a very team friendly deal. Out of nowhere the Wings traded him to Vancouver for the Islanders first rounder that Vancouver got in the Horvat deal as well as a second rounder next year. Absolutely a stunner. When we signed Walman to a three year deal, i thought about it, it gave us five defenders with term on the back end Seider Maatta Hronek Walman Chiarot All locked up for at least two years, most longer. Edvinsson will join the club next year for a locked in starting six, honestly, i have been debating if it is enough to contend with that group and keep going round and round. Moving out Hronek feels like part of a bigger deal. The irony would be if we get Chychrun from the Coyotes, ironic because it was the trading Datsyuks final year of his contract to Arizona and trading picks with them that landed Chychrun in Arizona and Hronek came to Detroit as the second rounder we got back in the same deal. Yzerman is making his move, I would not be surprised if Chychrun comes aboard with some of the futures we just added, if so, along with Edvinsson yes, it would be a no douby playoff quality defense. Hate to see Hronek go, he has been a lot of fun, yes he is a turnover machine but there have been years where he is literally the only one on our back end who can carry the puck at all. God luck in Vancouver.
TropicalFruitGirl26
This REEKS of 'Steve Yzerman' style. But I mean that in a good way. He has done this before in Tampa...traded off a defender that some thought was a mistake to let go, but he was justified in the end....in TB that defender was 1st rounder Tony DeAngelo. Yzerman KNOWS his team still has lots of holes and what better way to fill them than with high impact draft picks and young players. Hronek, by himself wasn't going to move the needle much for Detroit as far as competitive cycles go. In fact, I'd say Hronek's BEST attribute was playing as well as he did in order to interest another team enough to give up the draft picks they did for him. If this indeed is part of a bigger deal, then Stevie Y looks even better on this deal, but, even as is, I'd call it a bit of a win for him selling high on a player that ultimately, I feel wasn't part of the long term future of a Cup competitive Wings team. Hronek DOES fit in with what Vancouver seems to like.....more offense than defense, and willing to sacrifice grit in a player for pure skill. The Canucks, like the Wings, have lots of holes, and Hronek is a nice piece for them, but since I believe Vancouver will be bottom feeding for the foreseeable future, Hronek's skillset deficiencies won't impact them as much as he would playing for a Wings' team that, from the looks of it, is on its way up.
Brewin Flames
Red Wings trade Filip Hronek to Canucks for two draft picks Ryan S. ClarkNHL reporter The Detroit Red Wings traded defenseman Filip Hronek and a 2023 fourth-round pick to the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday in exchange for the New York Islanders' conditional 2023 first-round pick and a 2023 second-round pick. The Red Wings deciding to move on from Hronek came as a bit of a surprise, raising questions if the team could be on the verge of another move. The former second-round pick led Detroit's defensemen with nine goals and 38 points while averaging 21:31 in ice time over 60 games this season. The 25-year-old was also tied for second on the team in points. The Red Wings entered the day five points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot. Sending Hronek, who was in the second of a three-year extension, to the Canucks means the Red Wings were able to clear his $4.4 million cap hit from the books, giving them $7.27 million in projected available cap space ahead of Friday's trade deadline. In addition, the Red Wings were able to add even more draft capital. The protected first-round pick from the Canucks was part of the trade that saw former captain Bo Horvat dealt to the Islanders. The Red Wings now have five picks in the first two rounds of the 2023 draft and nine picks in total. Hronek provides the Canucks with another top-four defenseman that could be part of their future plans. The Canucks opened the season with a seven-game losing streak that resulted in just two points -- a jarring start given what they achieved after they replaced Travis Green in December 2021 and replaced him with Bruce Boudreau, who went 32-15-10 and fell five points shy of a wild-card spot last season. The Canucks have been above .500 just once this season -- on Dec. 27 -- before losing seven of the next eight games. Vancouver eventually fired Boudreau, replaced him with former Arizona Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet and started looking toward the future, beginning with trading Horvat in late January to the Islanders in a deal that saw them receive that protected first-round pick, forward Anthony Beauvillier and prospect forward Aatu Raty. The Canucks received former first-round pick Vitali Kravtsov from the New York Rangers last Saturday. On Tuesday, they traded defenseman Luke Schenn back to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a 2023 third-round pick. The Canucks remain in the running to potentially win the NHL Draft Lottery, with North Vancouver native Connor Bedard as the projected No. 1 pick. Entering Wednesday's games, Vancouver had seven more points than the Columbus Blue Jackets, the team with the fewest points in the NHL. He's a righty D, which seem to be a bit harder to come by.
