Also…Buffalo had a good streak at the end, but did lose on the final Tuesday to an indifferent Devils squad near season’s end. Had the Sabes also won that game, then Buffalo would have been eighth instead of Florida. Not just Pittsburgh involved there.

Of course, this all says something troubling about the purpose and nature of the NHL regular season…that it is primarily a money-making entertainment vehicle. Not to overly scoff at that, it provides lucrative careers for players and jobs for many others, and the situation is similar for all the major team sports. And who doesn’t want entertainment throughout a long winter?

But the Real Sport awaits playoff time.
