The Vancouver Canucks have signed defensive prospect Jett Woo to a one-year, two-way contract extension for the 2023-24 season.

According to Rick Dhaliwal of CHEK TV, the deal is worth $750,000 at the NHL level and $100,000 in the AHL.

Woo took big steps in his development this year, registering a career-high seven goals and 21 points in 68 games. He has 34 points in 138 AHL games over three years between Utica and Abbotsford while being part of the Canucks system.

Woo was a pending RFA after the end of his entry-level contract that originally kicked off four years ago. The Winnipeg native was taken with the 37th overall pick in 2018, showing some solid progress over the past couple of years.

A physical defenseman, the 22-year-old has yet to suit up for the Canucks, but gives the team some extra defensive depth. At best, he could step into a seventh defenseman role next year. But most likely, he’ll continue to play heavy minutes for Abbotsford, acting as a solid defensive defenseman with the ability to shut down opponents physically.

The Canucks have 12 defensemen signed between the NHL and AHL, with Travis Dermott and Ethan Bear set to become RFAs. Kyle Burroughs is the only blueline on the roster set for unrestricted free agency next year, while Tucker Poolman was on long-term injured reserve this year.

Vancouver missed the playoffs this season, while Abbotsford was knocked out of the Pacific Division semifinals by the Calgary Wranglers.
