Well, here’s an interesting move.

Roughly 24 hours after acquiring Peter Budaj from Montreal, the Winnipeg Jets placed the veteran goalie on waivers.

its why i posted it..didn't make sense..is it a fake cap hit thing who knows????

@Irishjim  I was really surprised when this deal went down....for a few reasons. First off, Hutchinson is a fine young goalie, and judging by his play in the NHL last year, he was ready for a full time back up position, *maybe* even challenge the veteran bum Pavalac for the starter job on the Jets. Plus, Hutch was slated to make much less than Budjai.....so I never understood just where the Jets were coming from on this deal.

@Irishjim  I did a little digging, and I found a few interesting things. First off, Eric Tangredi had a one way deal, he was scheduled to make 700,000 on the Jets or their farm team. So, the Jets were motivated to dump his guaranteed cap hit. My next question, why did the Habs just not claim him off waivers instead of making the deal....they wanted to get rid of Budji also...

@jammer2 so it was a cap hit thingy..but isn't budaj's hit still on the jets books unless claimed..cause he's a little spendy for an AHL goalie

I see it now..tangredi was due 700k. budaj was owed 475k..by waiving him they save 225k right away and if he's released aren't they only responsible for half his cap hit..correct me if i'm wrong

@Irishjim  I think that is how it works....also, if Budaj has a 2 way deal instead of one way....he can be payed a lesser rate if stuck in the AHL.
