First to meet the Banjo Cats in Regina, and next to face the Banjo Mutts in Saskatoon. Hopefully, the team will not be too grossed out by bad breath permeating from the stands and the general stench of the place. This has the makings of a trap weekend. Regina has had a bad start and have had a bye week to address what ails them. While they were overwhelmed by Calgary and MRU, they were quite respectable against Lethbridge and UBC. Meanwhile, the Bisons have split every series so far, including an exhibition series at home against these very Kittens. Last year, Regina beat the Bisons 3-out-of-4. However, in the three previous seasons the Bisons won 11-out-of-12. Overall, the Bisons have won 7 of the last 8 games played in Regina. A quick look at the stats pages shows Regina's problems. Their top scorer is Conner Chaulk (1-4-5), and second is Landon Peel (0-4-4). The rest of the roster has 3 points or fewer. In goal, they once again are using all three goaltenders due to the stress of playing in the Regina kitty litter. The Bisons are led by Adam Henry (4-5-9) and Keaton Jameson (1-8-9), part of a 5-way tie for 9th in conference scoring. In goal, Riley Lamb has taken the starting role and has been both busy and effective. His numbers are 4-2-0, .923 S%, 3.13 GAA. Jeremy Link got his first start last weekend, so it looks like he has jumped past Tyler Brown in the depth chart. The Bedrock Boys got it going during the pre-season and have maintained the pace ever since. This is a home-and-home series, Friday in Calgary and Saturday in Edmontown. The Evil Monkeys and Dinos had some tight battles in pre-season, and I expect these games to be hard-fought as well. At 4-4-0 they are now two points ahead of the T-irds, who are now 2-4-2. The Bisons gave rookie Jeremy Link his first start in net, and up fronty Tony Apetagon was in for Nico Labossiere. UBC also switched goaltenders, added a 20th player (Shaun Dosanjh), and shuffled their lines a fair bit. 5. Oct 26: Bisons Beat Birds Since the Bisons play Saturday/Sunday this weekend, this is a massive post to cover Friday and Saturday games. U.B.C. In the first, the Bisons lambasted the T-irds and built a 4-0 lead. In the second, a steady parade of Bisons to the penalty box allowed UBC dominate the shot clock while scoring two goals. Here's how they lined up: MANITOBA BISONS Goal 30 Lamb (1 Link) Defence 2 Henry 3 Christensen 4 Stanley 25 Skrumeda 5 Schioler 28 Pouteau Forwards 14 Keane 10 Skoleski 17 Veloso 22 Leipsic 12 Jameson 29 Wasylak 16 Tripp 9 Thiessen 15 Dalke 11 Carlson 13 Labossiere 19 Halvorson Scratches 6 Dyck 8 Barley 20 Apetagon 21 Harris 26 Leblanc 27 Doerksen 35 Brown U.B.C. Mitchell Dyck came out, and Nico Labossiere filled the gap up front. The Bisons converted on two-out-of-three powerplays. UBC's attempted comeback was also based on powerplays, just that the two goals came on seven opportunities. Once the Bisons took their 4-0 lead, 7 of the 8 remaining penalties were to Bisons. The only UBC penalty came in an offsetting penalties situation. With the goaltending of Riley Lamb and a big lead, the Bisons never seemed panicked about the situation. The Bisons do not have a lot of veterans this year, but their three 5th year players are all doing a great job and are leading the team. Forward Jonah Wasylak had two assists and an imposing physical presence. Adam Henry had two goals, and with Sean Christensen formed a first line defence pair. The Bisons scored some nice goals on the night. Dylan Thiessen was set up by Skrumeda on a rare PP breakaway. Geordie Keane's goal was a tic-tac-toe set-up, Henry's first came from Wasylak's steal on Dea's mishandled play behind the net, and Henry's second was a traditional blast from the blueline on a powerplay. Matthew Stanley's empty-netter was about a 195-foot curling shot. The win boosts the Bisons to 4-3-0, their first time over .500 since they won their opening game. UBC is now 1-4-2. The rematch goes Sunday at 2:00 p.m. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD Friday MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 6 REGINA COUGARS 1 Links: LeagueStat: Summary Boxscores: CWHT Stories: rp @CW Andrew Fyten scored twice and Wyatt Hoflin stopped 12 of 13 shots to pace the Bluegars to an easy win in this one. The final MRU goal was an empty-netter. One note: If you were stuck in the popcorn line in the 2nd intermission you may have missed three goals. With MRU holding a 3-1 lead, Regina scored after 7 seconds of the 3rd. MRU scored 12 seconds later, and Regina scored again in 20 seconds. Riley Morris got the win (17 saves on 20 shots) and Brandon Holtby took another loss (30 saves on 34 shots). The Bluegars are now 6-2-0 and the Banjocats fall to 1-7-0. Last year, they played none of their co-CWs and this year faced only the Evil Monkeys. Then they started the regular season where their first two opponents were those same Primates and the Bedrock Dinos. All three series saw them lose once in regulation and once in OT. Not great, but nevertheless respectable for a middle-of-the-road team. All-in-all, it made them difficult to rate. So then we got to last weekend and it was Tweety-Birds against Puddy-Tats. On home ice, a convincing sweep would have cast UBC in a favourable light. However, they needed the help of an umbrella-wielding little old lady to gain a split in a hard-fought series. Now the T-irds are coming to Friendly Manitoba to face the Bisons, the very embodiment of .500 hockey. The Bisons were 1-2-1 against the T-irds last year, and over the last four years both sides are 8-7-1 on the head-to-head scoreboard. One issue for the T-irds is injuries. This has happened before. Hockey in BC is not as rough and tumble as it is on the prairies. Therefore, my theory is that it requires some adjustment for them. The first thing I'll be checking is how many players they dress. Their second issue is between the pipes, where veteran Rylan Toth has hogged all the ice time. He is 1-2-2, 3.68 GAA, .883 S%. His CW career numbers are 12-16-4, 3.23 GAA, .898 S%. Those are mid-range CW numbers. Backup Patrick Dea lost his only start where he surrendered two goals. Last year he was 5-5-1, 3.71 GAA, .880 S%. The T-irds have no scorers in the Top 20. However, Quinn Benjafield and Carter Popoff both have 4 points, and Benjafield and Austin Glover each have 3 goals in 6 games. Meanwhile, the Bisons have three players inside the Top 20 and two more tied for 20th. Captain and defenceman Adam Henry (2-5-7) and Keaton Jameson (1-6-7) are in a 6-way tie for 10th, Jeremey Leipsic (2-4-6) is in a 4-way tie for 16th, and Colton Veloso and Geordie Keane (both 2-3-5) are in a massive tie for 20th. Keane is quite a story. He was on the team two years ago and dressed just four times, going pointless. After sitting out a season, he's working hard, grinding it out, and contributing decent offensive stats. Without a Bison game Friday night, I can focus on the other series via CanadaWest.tv. ELSEWHERE IN THE CW MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS (4-2-0, 7-4-1, OHT35 #7) REGINA COUGARS (1-5-0, 2-8-0, OHT35 #33) Links: ➤ MRU: [Men's Hockey Site] ➤ Regina: [Men's Hockey Site] Who doesn't like a good Cougar fight? These games will not be arguments about spilled beer and one b**** putting the moves on another's boyfriend. They will be only about 2 points in the standings. Now the Bluegars are on the move, and the Banjocats are desperately trying to pick up whatever scraps they can. The Bluegars opened with a sweep of the Banjomutts, followed by splits with the Bisons and Evil Monkeys. In so doing, they have turned heads from coast-to-coast. On the other hand, Team Hillbilly has had it rough. They opened being blitzed by Bedrock U, and things looked dismal. Then came a sweep in Lethbridge, where they lost even with 41 shots on goal per game. But just when all looked lost, they posted a win at UBC last weekend en route to s hard-fought split. Players to watch? Well, Regina has no Top 20 scorers. Five players lead the team with 3 points each. Once again, they have three goaltenders trying to recover from shell-shock. Brandon Holtby has the best numbers, a respectable 1-2-0, 2.86 GAA, .912 S%. That could switch quickly. Rookie Curtis Meger is 0-1-0, 6.45, .839 S% and veteran Dawson MacAulay is 0-2-0, 9.47 GAA, and .750 S%. Yikes. Meanwhile, MRU has 5 of the Top 9 scorers and 6 of the Top 20. That says it all! A lot of people might be surprised with my pre-season pick to place Bedrock U ahead of the Banjomutts. But so far it has panned out. The Dinos played 8 non-conference games, and Sask just the two. Maybe it is just a case where Sask needs to catch up to the conditioning of the other teams. One note: Sask really dominated the Hørny Ønes last week. That doesn't make up for the way they were pushed around by MRU or Alberta, however. My feeling is that this series will be a TSN Turning Point for one team or the other. The Hørny Ønes had a dismal pre-season but then managed to squeeze two points out of the Bisons, then racked up four more against Regina. Things were looking up. Was last weekend a sign they were crashing back to Earth? The Evil Monkeys generally take no pity in these situations. Both of these teams linked to WHL scholarship stories. At the other end, Nikolas Amundrud started but was yanked mid-way with 11 saves on 15 shots. Taz Burman mopped up with 20 saves on 24 shots. Despite the sweep, the Mutts remain 1 point (!) behind the Horny Ones, who are now 3-3-0. No biggie. The other change was Devon Skoleski and Lucas Skrumeda switching lines. Skoleski scored twice, including the winner on a 2-on-1 with Adam Henry in 3-on-3 overtime. Skoleski missed all of the games up until now, so it was nice to see him back in the lineup. Skrumeda was paired with Ryan Carlsom (also a converted defenceman) and Nathan Halvorson on an effective checking line. Despite the lop-sided shot clock on both nights, for all but about 15 minutes on Friday night, there was never more than a one-goal gap between the teams. The Bison goals were generally nice passing plays being converted. At the other end, Bedrock U must be concerned that possession and territory generates lots of mediocre shots. Usually when you see this many shots on goal, there are several periods where the game looks like a perpetual power play. Not the case here. However you look at it, the Bisons have 4 points in 4 games against what have been the hottest two teams in the CW. So this has to be the decent start they needed with such a roster laden with rookies. The Bisons host UBC next weekend on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. They have swept Regina (now 0-4-0) and UBC (now 0-2-2). While the Bisons are 2-2-0, their opponents are both now 3-1-0 with, naturally, their only losses coming against the Bisons. Last year, the Bisons held their own against the Dinos, going 2-2-0. Over the last 4 years, the Bisons are 9-6-1 against Calgary. The Dinos have 6 players at or above a point-per-game pace: Matt Alfaro (5-4-9), Graham Black (2-6-8), Jordan Xavier (2-4-6), Ryan Gagnon (0-6-6), Coda Gordon (1-4-5), and Kaden Elder (2-2-4), all of whom are in the CW's top 20 scorers. Meanwhile, two Bisons are at that level: Adam Henry (1-5-6) and Jeremy Leipsic (2-3-5). Matthew Greenfield has started 3-of-4 for the Dinos and has impressive stats (3-0-0, .910 S%, 1.89 GAA). Meanwhile, Bison rookie Riley Lamb has taken over the starter's role and has impressive stats himself (2-1-0, .915 S%, 3.03 GAA). Last weekend, Josh Tripp dressed for his first games as a Bison. That leaves Devon Skoleski and Matthew Leblanc as the only players yet to dress. 12. Oct 12: Bisons Rebound for a Split The Bisons played in one of three matinees today. I'm not a big fan of Saturday afternoon games myself. Although I could see why the travelling team would much sooner play an earlier game. Now that each team has played one series at home and one on the road, here's how Saturday night went. MANITOBA BISONS 5 MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 4 Links: LeagueStat: [Summary] : [Report] CW Hockey Tech: [Summary] : [Report] : [Text] Boxscores: [USP/CIS] : [CW] : [Coach's View] Stories: [MRU] : [rp @CW] : [rp @UofM*] Late link: [Friday rp @UofM] A split on the road at MRU is probably going to be looked upon as a pretty good weekend for the vast majority of teams as this season wears on. This win gives the Herd consecutive splits (2-2-0) and is the first blemish on the Bluegars' record (3-1-0). The game was an oddity in that the Bluegars were running up the shot clock, however the Bisons were able to respond with odd-man rushes. As on Friday night, the teams swapped leads from time to time. However, the Bisons pulled ahead for good in the 2nd period, where they scored four goals, the last three unanswered, to take a 5-2 lead into the 3rd. The official stats say that the 3rd period shots were 17-1 in favour of MRU, which seems incorrect. In any event, MRU could draw back two goals but that was all. The Bisons were again upset with the officials. MRU had two 5-on-3 powerplays and in this one Jonah Wasylak got the 10 minute misconduct for arguing. In the end, MRU was 3-for-8 on the PP and the Bisons were 2-for-5. However, it must be noted that the first Bison goal came 2 seconds after a PP expired so it was basically generated by PP pressure. Riley Lamb got the win, and it appears that he has won the starter's job. He stopped 37 of 41 shots. Riley Morris suffered the loss with 6 saves on 11 shots through two periods. He was yanked in favour of Wyatt Hoflin in the 3rd period, and he stopped the lone shot credited. And this was one of those. The Bisons made two roster changes, starting Brown over Lamb in goal and Apetagon took over from Barley in the forwards. The Hørny Ønes shifted the defense pairings a bit but dressed the same 20 players. The penalties were ultimately the difference. Lethbridge was 2-for-6 on the PP and the Bisons broke even, going 1-for-5 and giving up a shorthanded goal. Each side also had a goal waived off. After each side had an early goal, the Bisons never got untracked once the penalties started kicking in. Veloso scored on a break-away mid-period. But within seconds of a PP ending, Guenter squeezed one under Brown's pads to tie the game. That save which somehow trickles through the pads seems to be Brown's problem area. It happened on this goal, the one waived off, and in the pre-season. The 2nd period saw Lethbridge take the lead on a point shot. Wasylak tied it on a one-timer to the top shelf, and Henry gave the Bisons on a scramble upon the end of a PP. A PP deflection allowed the Horns to tie the game at 4-4 after two. After being out-of-synch for two periods, the Bisons did get it together in the 3rd. But not until after a sloppy line change on a PP in the opening minute provided Maxwell and Lethbridge an opportunity to take the lead. This was the second such occurrence in the game. The CW has a bye week next. The Bisons are headed to the Excited States for some non-conference play. On Oct 11-12 the Bisons are on the Road against MRU. The next home series is Oct 18-19 against Calgary. But, alas, I fell asleep before saving my post. So here it is as I watch the stream of Australia-Wales.The Bison recruits in goal and on defence were blue-chip this off-season, and it showed in their season opener. They outshot the Hørny Ønes 37-26 and had control of the game from the outset. When the Horns did get shots, they seldom were able to turn it into sustained pressure. It was generally a one-and-done situation. Riley Lamb posted the shut-out in his CW debut. On the offence, a pair of sophomores avoided the jinx. 20. Team Preview: Mount Royal Cougars Since the line-ups were released so close to the season, I lacked the time to do a team-by-team. So I am doing this every now and then, by the order in which the Bisons play each opponent. Now it is time to cover the MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS, aka “Bluegars”. Here's the roster: Goaltenders: 31 Kurtis Chapman - 1st – Victoria (BCHL) 33 Riley Morris - 2nd – Okotoks (AJHL) 35 Wyatt Hoflin - 4th – Kootenay (WHL) Defencemen: 3 Tyson Helgesen - 2nd – Spokane (WHL)/Hartford (AHL) 4 Taylor Green - 4th – Coquitlam (BCHL) 6 Allan MacPherson - 3rd – Calgary (AJHL) 7 Jesse Lees - 4th – Prince Albert (WHL) 8 Ralph Jarratt - 1st - Victoria (WHL) 16 Connor Blake - 1st - Grande Prairie (AJHL) 24 Kade Jensen - 2nd – Brandon/Victoria (WHL) 26 Riley Shamray - 1st – Dauphin (MJHL) Forwards: 2 Jamal Watson - 4th – Seattle/Swift Current (WHL) 9 Hunter Zandee - 3rd - Vernon (BCHL) 10 Nic Sicoly - 1st - Aberdeen (NAHL) 11 Andrew Fyten - 1st - Swift Current/Edmonton (WHL) 12 Mitch Lipon - 3rd - Whitecourt (AJHL) 13 Josh Bly - 3rd – Kindersley/Nipawin (SJHL) 14 Keegan Iverson - 1st – Lacombe (ACHW – redshirt after pro) 17 Ryley Lindgren - 2nd – Lethbridge/Swift Current (WHL) 18 Brad Kennedy - 3rd - Halifax (QMJHL)/Weeks (MJAHL) 19 Connor Chartier - 4th – Lacombe (ACHW – redshirt after OUA) 21 Sean Richards - 1st – Everett/Seattle (WHL) 22 Brandan Arnold - 2nd – Nipawin (SJHL) 23 Nolan Yaremko - 1st – Tri-City (WHL)/Stockton (AHL) 27 Connor Rankin - 5th – Norfolk (ECHL) 28 Chris Gerrie - 4th - Lacombe (ACHW) Departures: 8 Zack Henry F 10 David Stephens F 15 Colton Kroeker F 16 Austin Adamson F 20 Luke Simpson F 21 Kord Pankewicz F 27 Grant Baker D 31 Colin Cooper G Let's look at the arrivals and departures on a position-by-position basis, starting in goal. Cooper's best season was his first (2.30 GAA, .913 S%, 13-5-0) and his worst was his fourth (last year, 3.03 GAA, .904 S%, 2-5-0). In between, his save percentages were .899 and .884. Morris emerged as their starter last year, so this departure should not hurt too badly. Hoflin has become a career backup. This will be his 4th year in the CW, which followed 4 years in the WHL. Chapman's history is checkered. He's played on 8 teams in 6 leagues the last 4 years, including the WHL, BCHL, AJHL, SJHL, MJHL, and BCIHL. The defenceman they lost was, appropriately, defensive. Baker was 0-6-6 and a +6. He played all 28 games. So he's a loss. But with five returnees, the three replacements should be an upgrade. Jarratt had a solid career with Victoria (WHL) and Blake and Shamray were captains of their Junior A teams. Up front, they have lost Stephens, their leading scorer (7-16-23) and Kroeker, tied for second (6-16-22). Even though they have three “blue chip” recruits from the Dub, this loss will hurt them. One will notice that they have had quite a number of players coming their way after emerging from the purgatory of a season in Lacombe necessitated by the need to recover eligibility. This feature makes them somewhat of a “veteran” team. I have them picked as #4 this year. MRU at Elite Prospects MRU Team Roster

Brendan Burke stopped 19 of 22 to get the win and Rylan Toth stopped 34 of 38 for the T-irds. Each side had two PP goals on 4 attempts. Instead of the usual Friday/Saturday double-header, this will be a Saturday/Sunday affair. The Bison opponent will be the Hørny Ønes, a team against whom the Bisons have played their worst games in recent years. Consider this: the Herd is 7-7-2 over the last four years against both the Evil Monkeys and the Hørny Ønes. This is as good a time as any to look at the new Lethbridge line-up: Goaltenders: 29 Jack Burgart - 4 - Bemidji State (NCAA) 33 Nikolas Amundrud - 1 - Rosetown (Sr AAA) 35 Taz Burman - 2 - Nanaimo Clippers (BCHL) Defencemen: 2 Danny Gatenby - 1 - Nanaimo (BCHL) 3 Dallas Valentine - 3 - Kamloops (WHL) 4 Joshua Patrician - 1 - Humboldt (SJHL) 5 Jeff Rayman - 3 - Vancouver (WHL) 7 Spenser Jensen - 5 - Moose Jaw (WHL) 19 Taylor Fisher - 3 - Selkirk (MJHL) 25 Cameron Trott - 3 - Alaska-Anchorage (NCAA)/ Vernon (BCHL) 44 Evan Wardley - 4 - Seattle (WHL) Forwards: 6 Russell Maxwell LW - 4 - Seattle (WHL) 8 Ryan Chynoweth LW - 4 - Lloydminster (AJHL) 9 Dalton Sward C - 5 - Vancouver (WHL) 11 George King RW - 1 - Melfort (SJHL) 12 Jared Janke C - 1 - Campbellton (MHL) 14 Kyle Gordon LW - 1 - Okotoks (AJHL) 16 Landon Gross LW - 2 - Olds (AJHL) 17 Josh Borynec LW - 1 - Melville (SJHL) 18 Owen Guenter RW - 1 - Humboldt (SJHL) 20 Brooks Maxwell C - 3 - Red Deer (WHL) 21 Torrin White RW - 4 - Langley (BCHL) 22 Jordan Roy LW - 2 - Fort McMurray (AJHL) 24 Luke Coleman LW - 1 - Calgary (WHL) 26 Michael Clarke C - 1 - Humboldt (SJHL) 27 Michael Grant RW - 2 - Nipawin (SJHL) 34 MacKenzie Mindus LW - 1 - Grand Falls (MHL) Departures: 4 Blake Orban D 11 Logan Mick LW 12 Sam McKecknie C 17 Clint Filbrandt D 19 Justin Valentino LW 25 Cameron Trott D 28 Derek Brown C 29 Garret Hughson G 33 Jonny Hogue G 34 Connor Sanvido C 47 Artsiom Kalashnikov F Like the Bisons, this is a huge recruiting class. On paper at least, it is a much weaker one. They have lost their top scorer (Valentino) and two more of their top ten (McKechnie and Sanvido). Filbrandt and Orban were the core of their defence. Hughson was their starting goaltender. They also lost AK-47! They have to pray that one or more goaltenders answers the call. Taz (back for his second season) had four WHL seasons and then finished in the BCHL. Amundrud's WHL career ended 4 years ago. Since then he has had two seasons in Junior A and one in Senior AAA. Burgart is transferring from Bemidji, where he played 3 games the last 3 years. The defence lost quality, but still has six returnees. The two Junior A recruits are a cut below the players they replace. Up front, the best recruits are Coleman and Clarke. Coleman has had 4 full seasons in the WHL and scored 20 goals last year. Clarke never played major junior, but did rack up the points in Junior A (28-43-71 in 57 games last year). All-in-all, I don't see the Hørny Ønes improving much if at all on their 20 points from a year ago. Their pre-season record would indicate this. They lost twice to Red Deer College of the ACAC (3-2 in overtime and 6-3) and two more times to Mount Royal (6-0 and 3-2). However, the CW coaches' poll (linked) has them tied with the Bisons in 7th. Here's the final vote total: 1. Alberta Golden Bears - 49 (7) 2. Saskatchewan Huskies - 41 3. Calgary Dinos - 36 (1) 4. UBC Thunderbirds - 29 5. Mount Royal Cougars - 28 6. Regina Cougars - 15 7. Lethbridge Pronghorns - 13 8. Manitoba Bisons – 13 My picks are: 1. Alberta 2. Calgary 3. Saskatchewan 4. Mount Royal 5. Manitoba 6. UBC 7. Regina 8. Lethbridge I will look at each team in the CW in the upcoming days to compelete the outlooks. ELSEWHERE IN THE CW MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS (0-0-0, 3-1-0, OHT35 n/a) SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (0-0-0, 1-1-0, OHT35 n/a) Links: ➤ MRU: [Men's hockey 2019-20 season preview] ➤ UofS: [PREVIEW: Huskies open 2019-20 slate at home against Cougars] The Mutts finished first a year ago before losing the conference final to the Evil Monkeys. That still qualified them for the nationals where once again their only wins were against OUA teams. En route, they eliminated the Bluegars in the CW semi-finals. So this presents as a redemption weekend for the Bluegars. MRU had respectable pre-season results, a split against Bedrock U and a sweep of Lethbridge. Meanwhile, Sask played just two games, edging out Regina before being shutout by Alberta. CALGARY DINOSAURS (0-0-0, 6-1-1, OHT35 n/a) REGINA COUGARS (0-0-0, 1-3-0, OHT35 n/a) Links: ➤ UofC: [Curtain rises on 2019-20 season in Regina] ➤ UofR: [Cougars finish off preseason with road split at Manitoba] Bedrock U had a very good pre-season, in fact the best one in the CW in my opinion. They started by sweeping aside Red Deer College, then went on to win single games against Regina and Manitoba while gaining splits against MRU and Alberta. There is no doubt that Mr. Slate has put a lot of effort into getting the Dinos ready for the season with 8 games. If they want to finally break through into the Top Two they'll need a pair of wins in road series like this one. ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS (0-0-0, 5-1-0, OHT35 n/a) U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS (0-0-0, 3-3-1, OHT35 n/a) Links: ➤ UofA: [Golden Bears Hockey season preview] ➤ UBC: [T-Birds open Canada West season against defending champs] The Evil Monkeys lost a load of good players. However, they also had an impressive and bountiful set of recruits. Things took a turn, however, when newly recruited goaltender Griffen Outhouse signed an AHL deal with the Manitoba Moose. The Apes had three decisive wins in pre-season (6-2 over UBC, 6-1 over Manitoba, and 4-0 over Sask) and three close ones (two of which were OTWs). The T-irds' only two games against CW opposition were those two against Alberta. Otherwise, they won their games against BCIHL and ACAC teams whilst losing their games against NCAA teams. UBC was the last CW team to update their roster page, so I have not looked into their roster too much. However, I have noticed that they have been short-staffed in the pre-season, dressing as few as 15 skaters in some games. 24. Sept 21: Herd Hits the Win Column REGINA COUGARS 1 MANITOBA BISONS 2 Links: Summaries: LeagueStat : CW HockeyTech : UofM There were very few line-up changes, but the game had quite a different feel. The passing was better and it looked more "regular season" than Friday's game. Both sides dressed 19 skaters and two goaltenders. Here's the alignment: MANITOBA BISONS Goal 30 Lamb 1 Link Defence 6 Dyck 4 Stanley 3 Christensen 2 Henry 5 Schioler 28 Pouteau Forwards 29 Wasylak 12 Jameson 18 Goethals 14 Keane 17 Veloso 8 Barley 11 Carlson 9 Thiessen 15 Dalke 20 Apetagon 13 Labossiere 19 Halvorson 21 Harris Scratches 10 Skoleski 16 Tripp 22 Leipsic 25 Skrumeda 26 Leblanc 27 Doerksen 35 Brown REGINA COUGARS Goal 31 MacAuley (35 Meger) Defence 27 Riddle 4 Schacher 22 Eisler 24 Hicks 2 Hilsendager 7 King 10 Eskra Forwards 21 Kreklewich 14 Coughlin 11 Odelein 16 McCorrister 9 Chaulk 17 Ripplinger 20 Duperreault 29 Campbell 19 Platt 23 Miller 13 Frei 12 Mickoski Scratches 8 Anderson 18 Adams 28 Peel 30 Holtby 32 Barnstable After a scoreless first period, the Bisons opened scoring 41 seconds into the 2nd period when Geordie Keane cashed in a perfect assist from Keaton Jameson. After 13 minutes, newcomer defenceman Matthew Stanley made it 2-0 with a hard point shot. Turner Ripplinger broke the shutout 7 minutes into the 3rd on a passing play inside the slot. Riley Lamb stopped all 11 shots he faced to get the win, and Jeremy Link came on mid-way through and stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced. Dawson MacAuley went the distance and took the loss, with 32 saves on 34 shots. It appears that the Bisons have been hit with a few injuries. Five players (Skoleski, Tripp, Leipsic, Leblanc, and Doerksen) never dressed for either game. Also, the team went with just 6 of their 9 defencemen actually playing on the blueline. 3rd year veteran Lukas Skrumeda played centre on Friday and last year's mid-season recruit Ryan Carlson played right wing both games. The last time the Bisons used defencemen as forwards on a regular basis they finished first! Up front, a massive influx of Junior A grads (even though very accomplished ones) will obviously experience some growing pains. Two players who did shine were Geordie Keane (who did not play last year and was a scratch most times the season before) and Nico Labossiere. Both had a nose for net. A lot of the others are playing nervous right now, which is understandable. Here's a weekend stat: The Bisons were 2-for-15 on the PP, Regina was 0-for-10. Thankfully, there were far fewer penalties on Saturday than on Friday. The Bisons are 1-2-1 in the pre-season, and Regina falls to 1-3-0. The Bisons will have two non-conference games down south during the conference bye week. Regina kicks off the regular season at home with a Friday-Saturday series against Calgary, whilst the Bisons host Lethbridge inn a Saturday-Sunday series. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 5 CALGARY DINOSAURS 4 (in overtime) Links: Summaries: LeagueStat : CW HockeyTech The Evil Monkeys trailed almost the whole game but in the end won it in OT. On the pre-season, Bedrock U falls to 6-1-1 and the Apes rise to 5-1-0. Cole Sanford led the Apes with 2 goals. Matt Berlin got the win with 20 saves on 24 shots, and Tyler Gutenberg got the loss with 18 saves on 23 shots. Not the greatest save percentages heading into the season. The Monkeys were also 3-for-7 on the PP. Both sides hit the road next weekend to start the regular season, Calgary going to Regina and Alberta to UBC. MACEWAN GRIFFINS 2 U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 4 Links: Summaries: LeagueStat : CW HockeyTech The Peter Griffins scored a pair of 3rd period goals, one in the last minute, to make the scoreline look respectable. UBC had four different scorers. Rylan Toth got the win, stopping all 16 shots he faced through two periods. Ben Maquignaz played the 3rd and stopped 2 of the 4 shots he faced. UBC finishes the pre-season at 3-3-1 and MacEwan falls to 1-3-0. Their next CW action will be about a year from now. 25. Sept 20: Shootout Loss on Friday Night REGINA COUGARS 4 MANITOBA BISONS 3 (in a shootout) Links: Summaries: LeagueStat : CW HockeyTech : UofM So I got to watch the pre-season home opener, caught my boy's friend's band, went home, got a cat nap, then started watching three Rugby World Cup games from Japan. Can I make it to 4:45 am when the All Blacks meet the Springboks? Might need another cat nap. The first news of the evening is the arena renovations. There was a smell of paint, large fans were at ice level to clear the fog from the glass (it rained immensely and we had very high humidity), the handicapped seating stickers were being applied as the game started, and the prices at the concession stand have suffered a major boost. But the upper deck was in place. I snapped a shot of the Ice signage due to finished before they open Saturday night. I snapped a picture from the upper deck. You can see the centre ice scaffolding which is still up. It's a nice view above the netting. You can't really see the boards beneath you from that vantage point. As for the game, the Bisons dressed 19 skaters. Here's the alignment: MANITOBA BISONS Goal 35 Brown (30 Lamb) Defence 3 Christensen 2 Henry 6 Dyck 4 Stanley 5 Schioler 28 Pouteau Forwards 14 Keane 25 Skrumeda 17 Veloso 29 Wasylak 12 Jameson 20 Apetagon 11 Carlson 9 Thiessen 15 Dalke 21 Harris 8 Barley 19 Halvorson 13 Labossiere Scratches 1 Link 10 Skoleski 16 Tripp 18 Goethals 22 Leipsic 26 Leblanc 27 Doerksen REGINA COUGARS Goal 35 Meger 30 Holtby Defence 22 Eisler 24 Hicks 2 Hilsendager 7 King 10 Eskra 28 Peel Forwards 23 Miller 13 Frei 12 Mickoski 20 Duperreault 11 Odelein 29 Campbell 27 Riddle 9 Chaulk 17 Ripplinger 21 Kreklewich 19 Platt 14 Coughlin Scratches 4 Schacher 8 Anderson 16 McCorrister 18 Adams 31 MacAuley 32 Barnstable Regina scored a soft one 3:40 into the game. Tristan Frei dribbled one underneath Tyler Brown's left pad. He'd like that one back. There was then no scoring until the 3rd period. Adam Henry pounced on a loose puck 7 minutes in to tie it. Then Jonah Wasylak tipped a point shot from Keaton Jameson to give the Herd their first lead 9 minutes in. The last 3 1/2 minutes saw a flurry of activity. Tanner Campbell tied the game when the Bisons vacated the d-zone to look for more goals, leaving a break-out opportunity for the Cougars. However Adam Henry restored the lead when he pinched in from the point to sink one in the open net. With the goalie pulled for an extra attacker, Regina evened the score again when Conner Chaulk converted a scramble. Neither the 4-on-4 nor the 3-on-3 produced a goal, and after 5 saves on the shootout, Chaulk scored the winner. Regina is now 1-2-0 and the Bisons are 0-2-1 in the pre-season. Rematch goes Saturday at 1:30 p.m. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD CALGARY DINOSAURS 4 ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 3 Links: Summaries: LeagueStat : CW HockeyTech The Dinos rolled into Edmontown and gave the Evil Monkeys their first loss of the pre-season. Bedrock U is now 6-1-0 and Alberta is 4-1-0. Luke Harrison led the Dinos with two goals, including the winner. Brodan Salmond got the win (32 stops ion 35 shots). Brendan Burke gave up two goals on five shots in the first period before being yanked. Matt Berlin stopped 21 of 23 shots to take the loss in relief. The teams head south for Saturday's rematch. Marc-Olivier Daigle (a former Monkey from 2015-16 who never played) recorded a 28 save loss. The Peter Griffins are now 1-2-0. This series also continues Saturday.
