They need to take a bite of a better apple.
If they identify a player they want and if they can make a move to get him, I think they have to look at it.
Right now they're picking 17th and 25+ (possibly 32). Next year looks like much of the same.
Adding multiple Laughtons isn't going to move the talent needle. You have to go back to 2015 to find a draft with impact players in it that late (Connor 17, Boeser 23, Konecny 24) and even they aren't game breakers.
I wish we could get Dickinson or Lindstrom in this draft but both will be gone by the 5th or 6th pick. If we collapse enough and some teams below us get hot maybe we can pick 12th and have a better shot at trading up.

He's on his second franchise as well.
Morin was a reach. You show me the "shoulda had" instead of O'Brien that's more valuable than the 2nd they're getting this year.
Maybe K’Andre Miller, that’s about it. Sandin, I haven’t seen enough of him to determine.

So compared with the Rangers you’d have to say the Flyers are about even…
Yep you nailed it. Those were the main players I was thinking anbout especially Panarin. Anisotropic K’Andre Miller, a late 1R pick.
To be fair the Rangers did pick 1st and took Lafrieniere and then 2nd the year after (or before?) and got Kaapo Kakko. Kakko’s stock may have fallen a bit this year supposedly Drury was shopping him but he’s a damn good player.
Lafrenierre is starting to turn into a good player and Kakko would probably do better with a change of scenery. Tippett was almost written off as a failure in FLA, now he’s become the Flyers best sniper. Sometimes you just need a fresh start, Kakko has size and skill for sure.

that kid was a project, same with Morin.
Missing on those guys certainly didn't help anything.
The problem is they reached with those guys , there were other players available that were more highly rated and less of a risk.

For sure. The question is...is it impossible? Can a team win the Cup w/out stripping assets first so as to pick 1st or 2nd?
The Rangers may but they caught some huge breaks the past few years. The Flyers probably can't expect to duplicate their success.
I'm not convinced "tanking" is the only path. Assets are bought and sold all the time. Maybe not the overall 1st pick but just about anything else. Briere will have to be creative on draft day...if not this year then next year.
The breaks the Rangers caught were monumental. Trouba and Paneran only wanted to go to the Rangers and same with Fox. So in the blink of an eye they got a first pair defense with one guy being a hard hitting defense first guy , one guy being an offensive catalyst and also being a Norris trophy winner and they got a first line scorer. All this cost them was a second round pick. They also won the lottery getting the #1 and # 2 pick. Now let’s talk about the Flyers luck……. Hayes,JVR, Patrick and Gauthier.

Watching this reminds me of how much we need another 30+ goal scorer or two. We can't take the war to them. We are skating well. But our few shots are from 30+ feet. Bobo will eat them up.
We have some guys who are really coming on and will all be thirty goal scorers eventually . Tippett,Farabee, Brink and Foerester all have the ability to score thirty and Frost should be able to score twenty. TK is already there.

This is the primary argument for Nick Seeler, and it's a good one.

I agree with that, but I wish he didn’t turn into this shot blocking dynamo at the age of 30 as an UFA. I’m skeptical that he reverts to a popcorn maker next season.

What's been galling is to see a guy the size of Matthews basically disappear when things get physical. Steve Stamkos, outweighed by 20 lbs, bullied Matthews a couple of playoffs ago.
There are big guys who play small and small guys who play big. You need some guys that play with fire and suddenly it rubs off on the softies. Back in the better years the Flyers were never the most talented but they came to play every night and won against more talented teams on sheer will and determination , we took the Oilers to 7 games in 87, they had Gretzky and Messier, we had Poulin and Sutter…on paper we didn’t compare.

Much like in Buffalo hockey, they fired the guy who started "the Process" after letting him start it. The people who then replaced in both situations had no interest in pursuing the plan.
Obviously lots of top picks doesn't guarantee anything - Edmonton says "hello" - but you'll be hard pressed to find a post-lockout Cup winning team this century that doesn't have a top five pick on it...
It’s all about luck and circumstances as well, imagine if Patrick wasn’t a flop or if we picked any of the other guys in the top of that draft instead. If Gauthier decided to stay, then you add Michkov and we have a nice core. We had high level incompetence and some real bad luck to go with it. Before we think or talk about anything else , center is the #1 priority and a shutdown dman with some size is #2. It’s like building a house, foundation, walls, roof ,etc. I wish we could somehow make some deals and trade Konecny and picks and come away with Cayden Lindstrom and Sam Dickinson in this draft. We have Tippett ,Brink and Foerester and soon Michkov…you won’t miss Konecnys offense. Overall we’re a better rounded team instead of having four scoring wingers and no center or defensive stalwart.

or...look closer to home across the Parking Lot...Philadelphia Eagles. Howie Roseman says he always builds in the trenches...and stocks the OL and DL...but then he tries to continually find diamonds in the rough for LB and S and CB. As a result the second and third layers of the defense continually get exploited
It’s all about balance and being able to go up against any team and play any style. One dimensional teams always have to hope for a good matchup when the playoffs start, that’s one of the biggest problems Toronto had over the years. They went up against some physical teams and couldn’t compete. I know it’s hard, but you can’t be stacked in one area and weak in another and expect to win.

A lot of validity to this...I find that the 'Best Player Available" mantra works best when your team is already somewhat balanced...however if you are lacking in certain areas, you have to look at things more positionally and draft more for need, especially with higher picks.
Yes look at all the picks the Sixers had and the only guy left is Embiid and they haven’t won anything and they aren’t going to. They never had a balanced enough team and always had too many holes in the lineup to compete with the top teams. They pissed away so many high picks and the window is closing for Embiid.

In one sense, you're not wrong and I'm not totally disagreeing here. Two of them are all but guaranteed to be 25+. And the Flyers' pair are now likely to be in the middle of the round. To @flyercanuck's point, you could get four Scott Laughtons with those picks...
Football isn't the best comparison as the talent doesn't drop off as precipitously as it can in hockey. But Howie did trade up to #2 to get Wentz and traded up into the top 10 to get Carter last year.
In fact, he's traded up in each of the past three drafts. Let's see what happens with the current bounty.
(Oh, and one of the 2nds that they're "getting" is because they didn't manage to sign one of the 1sts. #winning!)
The main question is what does "the rebuild" look like?Winning a Cup or back to being a consistent lower half playoff team?
Although I hate basketball ,let’s not forget “Trust The Process “ . The Sixers had countless high first and second round picks and they drafted what they thought was the best player available with those picks. They had no blueprint or plan to fit those new pieces in to complement the nucleus they had, all they did was collect pieces that did not fit the overall puzzle. Then they figured they could trade those former high pick players that didn’t fit and get equal value back, they got jack **** back because the players became devalued due to lack of playing time and development. You have to look at the team you have and what you need and draft accordingly and trade up or down to get what you need. For example we are loaded at right wing, you can’t have a big scorer on the third line because all you do is draft right wings and there’s nowhere to put him, not every player is capable of playing the off wing. Flyers have some finishers for the first time in ages, but no setup men, we have some smaller/non physical puck moving defensemen but no big shutdown defenseman. We have some good complementary wingers but we lack the couple of high end difference makers other than Michkov, we need to do everything we can to get the right players and build a balanced team. Drafting the “best player available” doesn’t always work, the Sixers are proof of that. Or the best player available better actually turn out to be the best player.

Anyone know how many other teams are paying $7.7 million for 2 -3rd pairing dmen?
And 7 million for a 4th line center. This budget sounds like the US deficit

The writing was on the wall the other day when Torts came out and described Seeler as “99% Balls”
No way Torts was going to allow Danny to trade the guy.
And 1% talent. After he signs the contract, he will return to his waiver wire old self.

How about Walker and a high pick...like a 2nd or a 3rd to Anaheim, for Vatrano? It works out well, salary wise. Walker is a right handed shot that the Ducks have been rumored to want.
Vatrano is 30 and looking for big $$, not what we need in a rebuild. Any assets we have should be compiled to acquire a young center either via the draft or by trade. We are paying Coots 7 million to be a fourth line center and the only other center we have is Frost. Without two top centers this team is going nowhere and has no future until we fix that.

It's like they're trying to sell the simpleminded on some line that they're making the Flyers great again.
Suckers born every minute.
The Flyers or anything else can't be great again, when you have meddling corporations and imbeciles involved in the decision making and stopping you from initiating your plan.

Any word on Seeler ? I sure hope he isn’t injured from blocking that shot, then we can’t trade him.

You don’t have to tank, all we want is for them to be realistic. OK, they keep Seeler and Walker, we make the playoffs and are out in the first round. Now we are stuck with these guys and Risto and you block the young dmen from coming up. You are also on the hook for more money for five more years. So what was really accomplished ? The way you build a team is by trading older guys for picks and using those picks to draft young guys or for trades for young guys, the more picks you have the more ammo you have to make deals. This management better not give us the same old Clarke/Holmgren way of doing things.

During the deadline they said one of the teams that wanted Laughton was the Rangers, how about Kakko for Laughton.
