  2. Great review.... Was hoping for better things from this train wreck franchise....
  3. Sabres bring back Lindy Ruff, team's most successful coachThe Buffalo Sabres have rehired Lindy Ruff, the last head coach to lead the franchise to the NHL playoffs back in 2011. Ruff, 64, was fired by the New Jersey Devils after 61 games this season. He replaces Don Granato, whom the Sabres fired after three seasons. Ruff coached the Sabres for 15 seasons, from 1997 to 2013. He ranks fifth all time and second among active coaches with 864 career regular-season wins for the Sabres, the Dallas Stars and the Devils. His 935 combined wins in the regular season and playoffs are tied for fourth in league history. "As I went through the hiring process, it quickly became clear Lindy was the person for the job. He has experience, a proven track record, familiarity with young players and so much more," Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams said. Adams worked as an assistant coach under Ruff in 2011-12 and during the 2012-13 season, when Ruff was replaced by Ron Rolston. The Sabres have gone through six different coaches since Ruff was fired. "I want to be clear though that this hire was not made with nostalgia in mind. Lindy is the right person for the job now, and any history with our organization and community is simply an added bonus. I believe wholeheartedly that Lindy can help our team reach their goals and am excited to get to work with him," Adams said. Ruff led the Sabres to the playoffs eight times during his tenure in Buffalo, including the Eastern Conference final in his first two seasons and the Stanley Cup Final in 1999. He is the winningest coach in Sabres history, having set franchise records in regular-season games coached (1,165), regular-season wins (571), playoff games coached (101) and playoff wins (57) during his first stint with the organization. "I think I've probably watched Lindy coach about as many games as I've actually played [in the NHL] -- and more than I've played for the Sabres," Buffalo forward Alex Tuch, who was a Sabres fan as a youth in Syracuse, New York, told reporters last week. "He was my favorite coach. That was the team that I watched, that I sat on the couch with my dad. ... Lindy's a great coach, a really smart guy. I've always been a huge fan of his." Ruff won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's coach of the year in 2005-06. He was a finalist for the award three other times. Ruff was credited with helping a young team in New Jersey take a leap to the postseason in 2022-23 with a 49-point improvement year over year. But the Devils regressed by 48 points this season, leading to his dismissal. The Sabres have gone 13 seasons without a playoff appearance since Ruff last took them there in 2010-11, which is the longest current drought in the NHL. That included a disappointing 2023-24 campaign in which Buffalo appeared poised to reach a new level of success with a roster of solid young players but finished with a lower points percentage (.512) than they did in the previous season (.555). "This is a team ready to take the next step," Ruff said about the Sabres. "I am both humbled and honored to be trusted to help this team win now. It is not a job that I take lightly. It is my goal to ensure that players believe in each other, play for each other and love being a Buffalo Sabre. There is no doubt that we all need to embrace the challenge ahead of us. The work starts today, and I could not be more excited." Ruff will be formally introduced in a news conference on Tuesday.

  12. William Nylander sits out as Toronto Maple Leafs lose Game 1rst-round playoff series on Saturday due to an undisclosed injury. Nylander, who hasn't skated with the team since Thursday, did not take the ice for warmups at TD Garden, ending speculation about his availability for at least one game. Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe has not revealed any details about Nylander's ailment, which reportedly flared up after the Maple Leafs' regular-season finale on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Keefe did not have an update on Nylander after Saturday's loss. Nylander is coming off a career-best 98-point campaign and is a staple among Toronto's top six forwards. He also is on the Maple Leafs' No. 1 power-play unit. While Keefe did not confirm Nylander's status earlier in the day, his teammates appeared resigned to playing without him. "[It's] tough for him, but hopefully, he won't miss too much and he'll be back," Toronto defenseman Timothy Liljegren said. "[It's] hard to replace Willy. But we've had guys step up when guys go down all year, so it will be no different this time." Nylander was the only Maple Leafs player to dress in all 82 regular-season games, and he hadn't missed a contest in three years. He was missed on Saturday. Toronto amassed 36 shots on net but couldn't solve Boston goaltender Jeremy Swayman in the opener. David Kampf, with the Maple Leafs already down 4-0 in the third period, accounted for Toronto's only goal, with assists from Connor Dewar and Ryan Reaves. Maple Leafs stars Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner combined for seven of those shots and nearly 41 minutes of ice time but couldn't keep Toronto from a 1-0 series deficit. With Nylander unavailable, Nicholas Robertson stepped into the lineup, entering Toronto's third line. He finished with 14 shifts and 10:38 of ice time. Game 2 is Monday in Boston.
  13. Bruins in 5 or 6, perhaps six. Bruins stink one game, and perhaps the leafs squeak out another.... Bruins def depth and netminding will be the difference.
  14. Avs' MacKinnon breaks Stastny's franchise points record Associated Press Apr 19, 2024, 12:52 AM ET DENVER -- Valeri Nichushkin scored twice, Nathan MacKinnon added two assists to break the franchise's single-season points mark and the Colorado Avalanche cruised into the playoffs behind a 5-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night. MacKinnon wrapped up the regular season with 140 points (51 goals, 89 assists) to top Peter Stastny's franchise record of 139 set in 1981-82 when the club was in Quebec. The speedy MacKinnon couldn't catch Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov in the race for the Art Ross Trophy, which goes to the leading points scorer. Kucherov wound up with 144 points. Still, MacKinnon made a compelling case for the Hart Trophy as the league's MVP. Then again, so have Kucherov, Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid. "I don't think one guy is more deserving [than] another guy," MacKinnon said. "It's out of my hands, and I can't control people who vote for me or don't like me or like me. It's all good either way." Mikko Rantanen, Josh Manson and Zach Parise also scored to help the Avalanche snap a two-game slide. Colorado jumped out to a 4-0 lead midway through the first period and never looked back in a game in which the Oilers rested several of their starters, including McDavid. "It's a tough game to play against a depleted lineup. It's always exciting to play the best players in the league, the best player in the world over there," MacKinnon said in reference to McDavid. "But I get it. They have nothing to play for right now. They don't want to get hurt." Justus Annunen made 25 saves for the Avalanche, who finished with a league-best 31 home wins. Colorado opens the playoffs at Winnipeg on Sunday. "I like where we're at," Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. "I think guys mentally are in a good spot." Dylan Holloway had a power-play goal for Edmonton. The Oilers will host Los Angeles in the first round starting Monday after the Kings won in OT over Chicago and Vegas lost to Anaheim in games later Thursday. Missing from the Edmonton lineup in addition to McDavid were Mattias Ekholm, Zach Hyman, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard and Evander Kane. That's nearly 70% of the team's points production this season. "I thought the first half of that first period we're just standing around watching them and they were skating around us, making plays," Oilers forward Corey Perry said. "After that, it's all about work and we battled hard. The way we started, it just wasn't there. "They're a great team. They're in playoff mode and they came out hard." The Avalanche went with a full cast, and Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner was under early pressure, surrendering four goals on 13 shots in the first period. Calvin Pickard took over after the first intermission and stopped 13 shots. MacKinnon joined Kucherov in the 140-point club this season. It marks the seventh season in NHL history in which multiple players have reached that mark. The last time was Jaromir Jagr and Mario Lemieux in 1995-96, according to NHL Stats. Avalanche forward Jonathan Drouin appeared to be shaken up late in the second and wasn't on the bench to start the third period. He's turned in a career year with 56 points. Bednar had no update after the game. The players from the Denver Pioneers were in attendance and received a loud ovation from the crowd in the first period. The team captured its record 10th NCAA national hockey title last weekend.
