What if Frost can steal the 3rd line center spot between JVR and NAK?

Bump Grant to the 4th with Laughton and Pitlick.

    Giroux - Coots - Voracek

    Farabee - Hayes - TK

    JVR - Frost - NAK

    Laughton - Grant - Pitlick

I would certainly consider that, but it doesn't look like the coaches are at the moment. Anything can change in the round robin, but they seem content to pick from the 13 forwards playing tomorrow.

  2. I was thinking: While it's awesome that it looks like he'll play again, it kinda sucks that Oskar may come back to an empty arena, either this postseason or next year. I wonder, with them piping in crowd noise, how feasible would it be to get Flyers fans all over the world to record ten seconds of a cheer or chanting his name, and combining them all together to play in the arena the first time he steps on the ice? Would it be cool, or lame? How could one even organize it?

So we don't know who the two D that will sit are, but I would assume they'd be guys who are locks to play once the round robin starts - though AV said they would use the round robin as sort of a pre-season. Niskanen/Provorov might make sense, since they're set as a pair, they're not coming out of the lineup, and probably need the least tuning up.

    Forwards then are

    Giroux - Couturier - Voracek

    Laughton - Hayes - Konecny

    JVR - Grant - Pitlick

    Raffl - Thompson - NAK - Farabee

I think I would rather have Laughton over Jake.

    What if they dangle Patrick?

I went with what I thought they would do. Leaving Voracek exposed depends primarily on what's available in FA or trade.  Frustrating as he is as a player, Jake's a top-6 right wing in the league. Letting him go leaves a huge hole that I don't risk without a plan for filling it.

Laughton's a nice player, but he's a 4th liner on a good team (who can move up, true), which, as it happens, the Flyers are. He's also a pending UFA, so if you want to keep him, you just talk contract with him right up until the expansion draft so he knows where he stands with you, and can re-sign if selected.

I doubt they put Patrick out there. He's started slow, but you can definitely see the skill. And he doesn't seem to have a work ethic issue like most high-pick busts seem to have. He's going to be a good player, I think, and giving up several years of low-cost Patrick would seem a bad idea given the stagnant cap situation over the next few years. Plus, even if the Flyers sour on him, as long as he comes out of this with his headaches under control, there's bound to be a team willing to take a chance that he's just a slow developer that you can make a hockey trade with.

So who gets protected for the expansion draft??

    Giroux

    Couturier

    Hayes

    Konecny

    Lindblom

    Laughton

    Patrick

    Provorov

    Sanheim

    Myers

    Hart

    This is my group.

    Anyone prefer something else.

Something else to ponder during the slow times.

I think that the Flyers will expose Laughton (pending UFA) and protect Voracek, but otherwise think you're spot on.

I agree. I hope it doesn't come to moving Ghost i have a soft spot for him since he is home grown and seems to have been battling the injury bug last year or two.

And i certainly don't want to sell low on him. Maybe Fletch can find a way to keep some of these pieces.

I'm ok seeing if Frost or Rubtsov can win a spt at center however i do like Pitlick and Grant game but at the right price.

Guess we'll see in a few months and these playoffs could change some views too.

The fact that you likely won't need to pay a big price for any of your RFAs makes Ghost a luxury you can actually afford. If he rebounds, great. If he doesn't, you can still sell low on him. But there's very little to lose going into next year with him as an option for the third pair. The only thing I can think of that might "force" a move is if they want a veteran RH defenseman for the third pair. But either Ghost or Hagg could be the vet on the left, with Friedman on the right. So it would seem unnecessary.

They are going to move Ghost to free up space.

I won't argue whether they will or won't, but I think that it's a bad move. Especially since he seems to be impressing after the two surgeries. It's entirely possible that the knee issues were what had been the problem with him. Seems a huge opportunity to sell low and kick yourself for it.

I'm not hating on Ghost but someone has to go.

Not really. You have either Frost or Patrick for 3C. Patrick can't really command much money given the slow starts his first two seasons and the health uncertainty, and Frost is still on his ELC. The other young guys you have to pay haven't really put up "pay me" numbers, so they should all be pretty cheap. That really means all you need is a backup goalie and a forward to fetch popcorn. Neither of those should break the bank. Unless you want to go out and go after a guy like Boeser, I just don't see the need to ship out salary - if Lindblom is actually healthy, the top 9 is set, as is the top 4. So the question is whether you prefer Ghost in your 3rd pair, or if you want to put the cash into your 3RW and push Farabee somewhere else. I honestly don't see what you gain by moving Ghost at this point.

I read a piece that quoted Fletcher as saying he hoped this is the lowest paid contract he signs with the team.  That's a cool thing for the GM to say.

Bigger picture, I wonder what this means for other re-signings.  The cap is apparently flat with some degree of revisiting. He was going to be signed as an RFA.  But doing this so early, medical prognosis aside, tells me some other decisions have been made.  Braun and maybe even Grant come to mind, even though I see him as a bargain.

Well, let's see what happens in Toronto.

I really don't see how they can bring back more than one of the FAs. They still have Myers, Patrick, and NAK on the RFA front, though none of them should be particularly expensive. Myers probably will come with the highest price tag at this point. They also have Hagg, and I have no idea how they'll go there.

The good news is that signing those guys to contracts that make sense (assuming Patrick gets a "show me" deal to prove he's healthy and let him go after a real paycheck after next season), they'll only have about 3 million for a backup goalie and a 13th forward (I'm assuming Friedman or Morin comes in as the #7). That would seem to rule out bringing back Grant or Pitlick, and may even force them into using another Phantom in the 13th forward role. Of course, they could sell high on Laughton to recoup some space, but I don't know if they'd value that more than his role on the team.

The Leafs are already being screwed over and this farce hasn't even started yet. Montreal and New York (Rangers) were not playoff quality teams. That's an embarrassment.  To think the Rangers can play Carolina and then slide into a match against a #3 seed is a joke. Meanwhile Toronto faces Columbus and then the top team? WTF?

If your team didn't want to get screwed over, they should have played better. The only reason they had a shot at the playoffs at all, despite all their talent, was the fact that they play in a weak division. Why shouldn't Carolina play a lower-seeded opponent? Last time I checked, they have a better points percentage than Toronto. In the old playoff format, the Leafs would have played the one seed, IF they beat out Columbus at the end of the season. Re-seeding after the play in is the only adjustment I would make if they're committed to this.

Why are the top 4 teams playing each other to determine the seeding? It's already determined from the standings. That should NEVER happen. You never want the top teams facing off in the first round.

It's a round robin. You know, kind of like what happens ALL THE TIME at the World Juniors, World Championships, and Olympics, where the top couple of teams regularly face each other in the first round. Except here, nobody gets eliminated.

I hope the NHL comes to their senses, finishes the regular season, and plays the standard top-16 playoffs. Don't care if it's a best-of-5 or a best-of-7. I don't want to see Florida, New York, or Montreal in these playoffs. It's ridiculousand just calls the season

FTFY. I'll watch, because it's hockey, but it won't feel the same. And I think many of the players will feel the same way.

Is that true?    Seriously asking.  I was of the understanding that the contracts are literally dated.  If so,

The league year starts on July 1 per the CBA. That's why contracts expire at midnight. There's nothing preventing the league and players from agreeing to extend the date in order to play out the season. There are rumblings that that is already in the works. My guess would be that they would apply it to contracts, but not to signing bonuses, although there are tax ramifications for players with the latter depending on where they reside at the time of that payment.

    then yes.

then yes.   And the difference it makes is that the contract expires on June 30.    (Someone look this up.  I don't know that the date thing is hard and fast.   But I think it is.    If it's not, then maybe not as big a deal.

    Except:

Players do get traded at the draft for draft picks, etc.   I think we're back to screwing the crap out of things going forward to resuscitate a season that is VERY MOST SINCERELY DEAD AND SHOULD STAY THAT WAY.

The players and the league very much want to resume the season. The number I heard was that the league stands to lose $1 Billion dollars if the season doesn't continue. That means a cap that goes down, players losing jobs (buyouts), etc. Neither side wants that to happen.
